This one had the possibility of bein' five star, but he service dropped it down. The food was delicious and my cocktail was quite tasty. But when we got there, we were going back and forth about getting one large table for everyone, or a smaller table, and let the rest of the folks fend for their own table when they got there. The guy at the front knew our dilemma and said that our server could take our orders right away, and get the ordering process going, so we picked the bigger table. Well, that worked out horribly. We don't know if he didn't pass it on to our server or if she just didn't care, but everything took forever. ALL of our food came out at the same time, and then we were asking for our checks because we had somewhere we needed to be, it was like she downshifted into non-movement. Always a favorite when we're in Joplin. Located in downtown, the restaurant has character and an understated sophistication. Went the evening after thanksgiving and had some delicious holiday specials. Our server, Audrey, was friendly and on top of things. The Gobble Gobble turkey sandwich had the flavors of the holiday and was quite filling. I generally prefer hot sandwiches, but this was just fine served cold. The apple cranberry salad came out with balsamic even though we ordered it without it. Audrey fixed the mistake right away. Great holiday evening meal. read more

We arrived at Noon and the Onion was packed! We were quickly placed on the wait list but we only waited 5 minutes. Our waitress took our wine orders quickly and delivered them in minutes. We ordered the lunch pork chop and the BLTA. Food came fast and was delicious! The pork chop special actually consists of 2 chops! They were cooked perfectly, not tough, tender and juicy. The smashed potatoes contained cheese and green onion bits. The sauce was delicious. It also came with a side salad, see the picture I posted today. The BLTA was served with copious bacon, tomato and avocado with just the right amount of lettuce. If we return to Joplin we will definitely eat here again. There is a big free parking lot just to the east of the restaurant. I was by myself and I got there around 645P on a Tuesday. There was no wait but most of the tables were full. I was sat at a window table by the restrooms. On the server's recommendation, I got the pork chop. I switched out the mashed potatoes for vegetable medley. It came with a salad or soup. I went with salad and house dressing. This is probably a weird thing to dwell on but this was the best house side salad I've had in a long time. Lettuce, tomatoes, egg, cheese and croutons with house dressing. It was very simple but the lettuce was green and crispy, the croutons were crunchy, the egg wasn't over cooked. The pork chop was pretty good. It was two 5ish oz pieces. The glaze has a heavy maple flavor which I liked. It was a little too sweet for me so I got rid of most of the sauce. The veg medley was okay. More onions than peppers and zucchini but that's happens. I also had a slice of the lemon mascarpone cake. It was pretty good. I'll probably try the key lime pie next time. This restaurant was just wow on all points. It's about 4 miles off the highway so I really doubted it if it was gonna be worth it. I was wrong. first, there's a very convenient parking lot right next to it with free parking so even that it's in downtown don't let that dissuade you. Second, I was worried because a lot of the people coming out were really well dressed, but we asked somebody in the parking lot and they said no they just had someplace to go but that casual was fine. Third, when we got there, my knee was bothering me from having been in the car for 10 hours And they asked me if going up a few stairs would be OK and I appreciated that they were paying attention. Fourth, our waitress was very attentive and knew the menu very well. We had picked this restaurant because my husband is a vegetarian and she asked him questions and make sure what he ordered would meet his needs. I forgot to take pictures of the spinach and feta salad, but that was really good too. My only regret is that we ordered an appetizer and I did not save room for dessert. We were seated immediately in this clean and charming cafe. When the waitperson came I ordered an old fashioned but they only have beer and wine. So I ordered a moscato -- unfortunately they were out of it. The waitperson asked if I'd like to try a wee bit Pinot, I did but it's not for me. So I asked for unsweetened iced tea. Yumaroo, crisp, fresh, and I drank 3 glasses. My spouse and I both ordered Ruben sandwiched. He got pasta salad as his side, I got homemade potato chips, both were so good! This is one of the CLASSIC eateries here in Joplin and such a great place to dine! It is located downtown Joplin in a beautiful old building that takes you back in time. The service is also like what your Grandma provides and they are always so nice while eating here. My fried chicken dish was good (not amazing) this time but I am still in love with their salad and their house Red Onion Dressing. Dropped in here on a Saturday evening, later than our normal dinner, around 7-ish, had only a few minute wait for a table to open up! The menu is full of great options, lots of whole-food friendly choices and even a keto section. I opted for a 6oz Sirloin steak, served with mashed potatoes and a spinach & feta salad(house dressing was a little too sweet for me). My wife had the grilled tilapia, which came with some veggies and wild rice pilaf. Both plates looks amazing and tasted great. The steak was a little more on the medium side of "medium-rare", but definitely within range. We also had a stuffed mushroom appetizer, which was good. They also have a pretty great selection of desserts Very nice room, fantastic service, and an enjoyable experience. Back again to our pick for the best in restaurant in Joplin, the Red Onion Café. We ordered two of our favorites, the Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp & BBQ Chicken, and the David's Fried Chicken Salad. The Bacon Wrapped Shrimp with BBQ Chicken is a thin chicken breast grilled and covered with a very small amount of barbeque sauce. It is just enough that you can taste the sauce, but not enough to hide the flavor of the chicken. On top of that is a small stack of microscopically thin sliced red onion that has been fried crisp. On top of that are two skewered shrimp wrapped in bacon that have been grilled over an open flame. It includes their loaded mashed potatoes and a small side salad. The bacon wrapped shrimp, the fried red onion, the light BBQ sauce and the grilled chicken all work together to make for a fantastic meal full of flavors. For a restaurant in Joplin, MO to get 5 stars from me is a big deal (not that I'm a professional critic). This restaurant would not get 5 in a bigger city where norms are different. Why 5 stars? * A dedicated gluten free menu. No guessing. No asking question after question about a menu item. Simple - this is what is gluten free. * Well prepared meat that comes to your table warm and delicious (I had the prairie farms pork chop). * Friendly staff (has always been friendly... for decades. Note that I was born and raised in the Joplin area but have lived elsewhere since 2003.) * Clean and inviting dining room. Clean restrooms too. * Lots of food for the price. My accompanying salad was huge and full of protein with a homemade onion dressing. My mom loves this restaurant and her favorite dish is the chicken Tuscany. My dad had the bourbon maple glaze pork chop which looked delicious and he seemed to really enjoy it. I will always return here when visiting family. My favorite Joplin restaurant. read more

Found the Red Onion Cafe and it fit the bill perfectly. Grilled cheese for brother, grilled shrimp for sister, soup and salad for mom, steak for dad. Everything was fresh and tasty. The restaurant is pleasantly cozy without being cramped. Lots of art on the walls, interesting and comfortable. The location is downtown, but there is plenty of parking nearby. Service was quick and friendly. Requests were accommodated effortlessly. All in all, a delightful experience. So the red onion is a staple. My wife and I have been going there for many years. Consistent in a good way. Wait staff is always pleasant. I would say it's fairly priced. Nice ambience. Particularly like going there for lunch. The menu is varied with pasta, salads, and sandwiches. They have a good burger. Well not small. We both ordered pasta dishes - his was the chicken Tuxedo (Alfredo) and mine was bowtie pasta with chicken, tomatoes, olive oil, black olives, onion & garlic. I had the Spinach/Feta salad as my side and husband had the regular side salad - both were spectacular and very fresh! His Tuxedo Chicken was very well made and had plenty of chicken. I really didn't think anyone could ever give me too many tomatoes, but I now know I was wrong as my Tomato Rumba chicken was just too "tomatoey" - way too much acid! The wonderful garlic bread that they give you with both the salad and the pasta helped break up the abundance of tomatoes, but it would have been so much better with about half the number of tomatoes! We will definitely come back when we are in Joplin and I look forward to trying some of the other dishes in the future! read more
