Smokehouse Turkey Sandwich
Greg P.

If you're from the Joplin area you know about Red Onion. A local staple of fine deli style food - and dinners at their main restaurant. The 32nd Street location is my go to. It's their simplified menu 'Espressoria' and the consistent perfect keeps us coming back. Dave's fried chicken salad and a smokehouse turkey is the best lunch pairing you can get anywhere close!

Raspberry Truffle in a real cup. Looks less fattening when you get it to go.

I love Red Onion Espressoria! I come here all the time and have never been disappointed. I am constantly checking in on Facebook and raving about their Raspberry Truffle lattes. So good! I've had many things on the menu, but my go-tos are the BLT&A and Versatile Veggie sandwiches. Both are great, although the veggie sandwich is extremely messy, so beware! And sometimes the dill cream cheese can be too much, but I just scoop out the excess spilling out of my sandwich and it all works out. Spinach and Feta salad is so simple because literally its just spinach, feta and tomato but it goes so well with their homemade vinegarette. And the bow tie pasta salad is ridiculously creamy and satisfying in its little styrofoam cup (perfect portion size cuz you know it's oh so bad for you!). I will continue to frequent this restaurant a billion times over. Highly recommended.

Love love the BLT & A. It's the bomb! I have never had a better cold sandwich. It's definitely worth $7.99. You also get to choose your side. It's a thick sandwich that doesn't fall apart. The thick bread is so tasty. The restaurant is decorated cute! The staff could be a little more friendly. They didn't even notice we can into the store. We had to look back into the prep area for someone to take our order. That seemed to irritate him.

Very fresh and tasty food! Their sweet vinaigrette is addictive. Definitely a go to when I am in Joplin.

Can do as takeout or eat in at the tables. Good soups and sandwiches. I really enjoy the tomato soup!

So it was a rainy day and they weren't busy so we were able to talk to the lady who owns it and hear how the movie got started and found some of its characters right there on their lot! Its in an old service station and we had to do the burgers for lunch! They were greasy and delicious and it was alot of fun to see! Sadly alot of the businesses in this small town on the Route 66 have closed, but man the buildings are a treasure themselves!

Even if the station itself is closed, the outside displays and vehicles are always accessible, making it easy to wander around, snap photos, and pose beside some true Americana at any hour of the day. The site is a restored Kan-O-Tex gas station, and it has become a playful landmark thanks to its alleged inspiration for characters in Pixar's Cars movie. Parked out front are classic fire trucks and other vintage vehicles that immediately transport you back to the heyday of the Mother Road. Old gas pumps stand as reminders of a time when stations like this were lifelines for travelers, and through the windows you can glimpse memorabilia that adds to the nostalgic atmosphere. It's a stop that blends history, pop culture, and roadside charm. Whether you're making a quick detour off I-44 or planning Galena as a destination in its own right, Cars on the Route offers a slice of classic Americana that feels both timeless and inviting. Quick Review: Overall 3 stars, because it's a chain,…read moredoesn't matter if it's a Denny's or an I-Hop, the food is pretty production line quality. If you've ever been to classic diners like the ones featured on Guy Fieri's such as Sam's #3 in Aurora Colorado (miss those days living out in the Rockies), then you know that special something when you sit down and all the locals come out and congregate for brunch...well didn't get that feel here. However, 5/5 stars to the chef. Let me explain. And don't get me wrong, the server was fantastic. The setting was in the retail section of the Joplin Petro Truck Stop, being a fairly dim but rather quiet corner. In all my years of trucking, on the road, whether it be at a Denny's in a truck stop, or a Black Bear diner, Waffle House, another Iron Skillet, or i-Hop, whenever I order medium rare on a steak, it would always end up on opposite ends of the spectrum-- either very well done OR bloodshot rare. So when my server brought me a true medium rare steak, there was this aura of sacredness to it. I simply didn't expect the chef was going to make it to that likeness...and he proved me wrong. It just shows, that there are still individuals on planet Earth that know how to grill up an everyday New York steak and not destroy it. , Thank you Jesus this art form is still alive and well. But of course going back to the quality and satisfaction levels of eating the food, I still want to stick to a 3. It's a truck stop, it's a chain, it tastes very manufactured production line quality. Like if you walked into any Flying J or Pilot, whatever they have in the hot food trays, it's on par with that. Basically the Caesars Salad, the Mashed Potatoes, but the steak was how a New York strip would taste but on the saltier side. Until next time, maybe I'll check out that other diner in Barstow CA on route 66

Iron Skillets are pretty common at truck stops, but this one really stood out for the service and consistency. Hot food, quick service, and our drinks were never empty. It's always such a nice break to sit down and enjoy a real meal instead of grabbing deli or fast food. The menu is familiar, the portions are solid, and everything came out fresh and fast. Great staff, great service, and a perfect spot to relax for a bit before getting back on the highway. We'll definitely be stopping again.
