This was our second time eating at Red Kettle and an even better experience than last year. My boyfriend got the chicken fried steak and devoured it. For his side, he subbed the toast for a pancake which was also delicious. The hashbrowns were a little more crispy than I'd like, but the flavor was great. I had a mimosa, the Denver omelette with fruit & subbed the toast for biscuits and gravy. I requested cheese on the omelette, but it was left off. I decided not to mention it until the very end though, because it was delicious as is so I didn't want to bother the waitress/chef for a remake. The waitress did make sure to take the cheese charge off before we paid. The biscuits are a bit different than a standard biscuit, seems more like a chopped up loaf. That being said, it's soft, pillowy, and delicious. The fruit was also very good. Service was fast, friendly, & my boyfriend appreciated the prompt coffee refills. We arrived right at opening and there were some people already inside. By the time we left, it was getting quite busy. Thick sliced, overcooked pastrami, crappy sauerkraut, skimpy Swiss cheese and 1000 island dressing that is runny! My companion's French dip was very good, if a little light on the beef. The steak fries were tasty also. The potato salad is pretty good, although they put sugar in it, which I don't really care for.... Why three stars and not less? The staff is PHENOMENAL! Great vibe. Right off the bat we were welcomed with the friendliest staff! I mean seriously, so sweet! We sat down and were handed menus and promptly brought coffee. We had some nice chit-chat with our waitress. She went over the menu, gave us get favorites and let us peruse the menu at leisure. I went with the chicken fried steak and eggs. Cuz anything with homemade gravy is always a must! It was by far one of the best I've had! And the prices were all reasonable. Portions were huge. You could definitely share a large breakfast amongst two if you're not a big eater. Great spot for breakfast in Idyllwild. We were seated fairly quickly and the service was great. The waitress was really great because she kept us posted on everything. She recommended vear choices including the deep fried potatoes. She mentioned prior to ordering that food was taking 30 min to come out which we didn't mind. We had to stay until the Pottery place opened a cross the street to pick up our stuff. She kept coming back to make sure our coffee and waters were topped off. The wait for the food was worth it. Everything was delicious. If you're in Idyllwild I highly recommend for breakfast. My mom and sister stopped into the Red Kettle on Thursday, 12/23 around 1pm! They close at 2 but we had plenty of time to order and enjoy our meals! Kelly our waitress was so sweet! We ordered the Malibu chicken sandwich, Ernie's Special Chile, hot wings and Perry's Favorite Fish Tacos! Everything came out to about $68 for the 3 of us. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the tasty food and the quick friendly service. This was my first time here actually after living on the mountain for almost 30 years! The best part about this charming, classic diner is Kathy. She was our generous, warm, funny waitress and she adored our dog Gerbert, who loves to dance and eat on his hind legs. She gave him so many treats that we went back twice because he basically pulled us onto the patio. They're also one of the only breakfast spots open during the week, so it's a great place to have a breakfast burrito and the fried steak. We came in on a weekend morning on the recommendation of a friend. Maybe we came in on an off day but for starters the service wasn't great. The food was bland. We had the California omelette -the avocado was a bit brown on top. The bacon was cold on the bacon and eggs. We asked for more half and half for our coffee and the server argued with us that we had it already. But what was on the table was non dairy creamer we had to take it out and show her the difference. She said she never saw that before. She did eventually bring a handful and toss them on the table. As I said not great service. Rode into town on a dual sport dirt bike adventure. Waiting around 20 minutes to be seated. Our server was on point, prompt, good sense of humor and friendly. In the central town location, indoor and outdoor seatings available, easy parking close to the library. Breakfast quesadilla was perfectly done with crunchy wraps and fresh eggs, bacon and avocado, so good! The other order of potatoes and sausage was clean and original tasting of it. Red Kettle is always worth a visit. It is a quaint eatery with good food in the middle of downtown. I've been here numerous times over the years with family and dear friends. One of those staples that you visit if it isn't too busy. It is consistently a very positive experience. On my last visit, I met up with my dear friend Howard on the day of his emancipation from California. He had sold his cabin and was headed to Indiana. We went to the Red Kettle for the first time on 22 Oct 2022. Actually it was our first time in Idyllwild. Red Kettle was very fabulous . I ordered scrambled eggs soft, cottage fries with onion and rye toast. My partner had eggs sunny side up, corned beef hash, cottage cheese and corn breed. We both had coffee. Everything tasted delicious and cooked exactly how we wanted. The coffee is good too. Our hostess and waitress were very sweet and friendly. They checked on us a few times and kept our coffee filled. I can see why Red Kettle is the top choice of a restaurant in Idyllwild. The place was packed but we got a seat quickly. We sat outside at the counter with our two fur babies. We will definitely go to the Red Kettle again. Maybe next time I'll order a sandwich or patty melt. read more

The food sat up in the window for 15 minutes before another server brought it to us. The service was minimal at best. The food was okay but way too expensive. A dinner salad in a 6 inch bowl, a veggie burger and two sodas cost us $32. As vegetarians we are used to being treated with disdain but this restaurant actually has an ANTI PETA sticker on the dining room wall. So they are against the ethical treatment of all animals??? I was looking for a nice cozy spot for breakfast - The Red Kettle is exactly that! Wasn't sure that I was hungry enough for food, but definitely large quantities of fresh coffee and lots of half and half. And I wanted to sit at a counter. Stopped in at a higher-rated spot a block away but no vibe, but it did have a great outdoor patio. The ladies behind the counter here are terrific! I came in, sat at the counter, asked for coffee and water, told em I might not be hungry, no problem. It's a Bunn coffee maker and the coffee is solid, The staff is friendly, some have been here in Idylwild for over 50 years! And the hustle and bustle coupled with copious fresh coffee kinda got me thinking more about breakfast Ordered the bacon, eggs sunny side up, hash browns, and sourdough toast. Smallest meal. Delivered to the counter in minutes, and exactly as ordered. Note: if you order eggs sunny side up and don't like em watery, tell the cook! Food was great, plate is plastic tho so doesn't hold heat well, and at 6000' elevation, I wish for ceramic-y plates... It's nearly 10 am now and it's getting quite crowded. Place is hopping!
