We stopped in for breakfast off a recommendation from someone we met on the Long Trail. Their breakfast menu only has 2 options and the food was pretty good, best part was the bread. Coffee was very good with a huge variety of options. The service was pretty strange, not bad but definitely not good. They both seemed awkward and like they didn't want to see us, haha! Not amazing but not bad either. Croissants were exactly as should be. Cream cheese and blueberry danish could have been sweeter but that may be my taste. Chocolate croissant had one slab of chocolate in bottom instead of 2 rolls so it wasnt as dispursed but amount was same. Maple scone was a little dry and not much flavor. This is an adorable little bakery with some really delicious food. We stopped here on a long drive for a mid-morning breakfast. Even for a random Monday (granted it was a long weekend) around 9 or 10am, the place was pretty busy! I had a breakfast sandwich with ham, and picked up a sticky bun and cookie for the road. The breakfast sandwich was amazing - hot and fresh, with generous filling. The bread was clearly high quality. The pastries were also excellent, even a couple of hours after initial purchase (and being squished around my bag for a while). But in addition to the normal selection of soup, salad, and sandwiches, there is also beer, syrup, jam, and breads. All the cottage-industry products you could hope for from an adorable Vermont bakery. I am not one to quickly give five stars to a place I have only eaten at once, but this food is fantastic. You should note, the sandwiches are more like paninis. That being said, get the whole sandwich or two halves. You will want the whole thing. The service is good but direct. The bread also looks good and is a pretty good price. Everything was prepared freshly and quickly. This is a place worth seeking out even if you are anywhere within half-an-hour of here. Red Hen has bread down! I grew up in the area and this bread was a staple in my diet. It's still as good now as it was back in the day!

I have been stopping by The Red Hen since it has opened. The bread products are excellent. Prices here are higher than I like to pay, but I often buy lunch and the occasional baguette here because of the convenience (I work nearby). The indoor counter service (before Covid) was professional (but not overly friendly). The outdoor counter service is poor! The Red Hen should close until it can properly attend to it's customers. In the future, I will drive the extra distance to Montpelier or Waterbury. read more

I couldn't choose between the open faced tuna sandwich and the turkey rachel, so I got half of both! By far, the best coffee place around. The bread and pastries are of really high quality, the staff is very nice and helpful. If you have children would really appreciate the books and games they have. I've visited the red hen almost every sunday since I moved to Montpelier and have a pleasant experience every time! You can tell that take pride in what they make, and rightfully so. This cool bakery makes delicious bread, pastries and other baked goods. We ordered a delicious Cyrus Pringle, a delicious wheat bread named after a dead dude who was a wheat botanist, to go with the next day's breakfast. I end up here a fair amount mainly for their bread- the croissants are perfect- flaky, buttery and delicious. The jambon buerre is very savory and a great option. I haven't had anything 'bad,' and all of their baked goods are fresh. I am only reviewing now because I've noticed a marked improvement in the demeanor of their counter service. I've been in attendance over the past few years and have experienced a range of disaffected, socially awkward or frankly rude interactions with their counter staff. Sadly this seems to be a relatively new prerequisite of local coffee shops, and I just don't get it. There must be a secret handshake between owners and potential employees that conveys the demeanor can convey just the right amount of ire towards customers.... ? But I digress: now, they've managed to hire polite, friendly counter folk who make great eye contact and respond when you have a couple of questions. It's like a breath of fresh air. Charming. It was super charming and "cute" and "rural." Not the greatest place ever but nice. The proprietors are definitely making an effort. I find you can get a lot of the "locally made" cheeses, condiments and what-nots at the local grocery stores at lower prices (I spied a few items in their shop that I've seen at the local co-op in Montpelier at better prices). This place has breads, pastries and some prepared food (soups, salads, sandwiches). The soup is actually reasonably priced and a good value for lunch - generous portion of soup and large hunk of bread! We were there around 1:00pm on a Saturday and they had already run out of a lot of their soup and pastries...kind of a bummer but I'm not really sure how late people here like to do "weekend brunch/lunch." To me 1pm on a weekend was a bit early to calling it quits on your item availability. There was a gentleman performing live music. Nice touch. But it was a bit awkward since it was pretty quiet and there wasn't much of a crowd. Pros: Soup, freshly baked bread, local ingredients, clean bathrooms, near some other interesting shops (a chocolate shop, thrift store, art gallery), live music. Cons: Quiet atmosphere makes for awkward moments when people are not really that into the music being performed, they seem to run out of food kind of early. It was so busy in there for breakfast I asked for a breakfast sandwich with a croissant and they could not do it but they made every accommodation for me to make that happened. This little valley ~ the MRV~ is a hella kick in the breeches! Paid for full tank so I must return it on "E" ... Searching for Montpelier Mud but closed on Monday so stopped in this cafe. Authentic pain au chocolate and lusty dark roast decaf. Wifi, couches, a wine section, cafe tables ... A bit too chilly to sit in front on their picnic tables... What a great little find!!! Great Vermont-y feel for any tourists out there. Their sandwiches were simple and delicious. Kermit was the best - VT cheddar, pesto, and spinach. Fantastic artisanal bread of many types. I know the people who run the place and they are dedicated to their art. They also make a variety of excellent pastries and have a selection of sandwiches and other lunch items. They have a casual dining area. It's a nice spot to stop for a cup of something hot and a croissant. The other attraction of the place is that they treat their employees well. I know that they pay them more than is usual for this kind of business and offer good benefits. Happy employees make for good service and a relaxed atmosphere. There are big windows looking in to the baking area so if you arrive at the right time you can watch the baking process.
