    Ham and cheese croissant
    Sara M.

The bakery came highly recommended by our Airbnb owner and we happily obliged to try it out. As soon as you open the door, the whiff of delicious goodness that is pastries welcome you with open arms. I am super indecisive when it comes to pastries for I just want to try everything. Our first visit, we each walked out with few things we wanted to try. I had ham and cheese croissant (AHMAZING! Juicy slices of ham between buttery cheesy layers), Almond Croissant (the first taste was the citrusy cream which I found very unusual for an almond croissant but it worked! So so good!), and I spotted these clusters thingy called Chapeau so had to get it as I had never seen anything so cute and it's got strawberry jam (oh my word.. the most delicious thing! The cluster is made up of bits of croissant and strawberry jam to hold them bits together. We're talking crunchy bits on the outside and soft sweetness inside, to die for!). The other gals each got the cheese and chives danish things and they both loved it. The chives and cheese perfectly complement each other and the aroma was some culinary magic level. We also got some cookies to munch on after dinner. The Rosemary and Lemon butter cookies was my favorite. The double chocolate tasted like a cross between brownies and chocolate thins and perfect for after a spicy chicken soup from Wilaiwan's down the street :) I can't wait to go back!!

Iced chai latte and honey cinnamon scone

My iced chai was made perfectly just the way it should! I also got a honey cinnamon scone which was baked perfectly and hit the spot! We also got the mini banana cream pie pastry which..holy cow was it delicious! Big enough to split with another person. The freshness of the bananas and the pudding was just an absolute delight. I wish I lived around here so I could get this treat more often! My friend got the Thai iced coffee and she was very disappointed as it just tasted like a regular iced coffee. They don't use the condensed milk like you typically see used for this drink.

Birchgrove Baking is the only things on this planet that reminds me Montpelier, VT even exists. Driving home from Stowe, there's not enough Dunkins or Starbucks to my left and right like how it is down in CT. We had to improvise if I want to enjoy my Sunday with a Mocha Latte. I somehow stumbled upon Birchgrove Baking on Yelp and decided to give it a try. This area was practically a ghost town until you get to Birchgrove Baking. It was thriving and there were plenty of people waiting in line. Well now I know why! Their Mocha Latte and Chocolate Chip Cookies were made with love. Absolutely delicious and I always love it when they add that little design in my coffee. But their Chocolate Croissant....that was more than love. It was next level. Set the bar for me in terms of Chocolate Croissants. It was fluffy, chocolaty and oh man what is this delicate, light, flakey, borderline crunchy texture on the outermost layer? NEXT LEVEL STUFF RIGHT THERE. It changed my life. I never in my life thought I would be wanting to go back to Montpelier when I first drove through. Nothing wrong, just nothing for me. But now I know where the ultimate pit stop for coffee and pastries is. Right here at Birchgrove Baking. If you ask me the capital of VT, I'll probably just say Birchgrove Baking. No disrespect but that Croissant put this place on the map for me at least.

    Sunday donuts

We saw the line out of the door while driving through town and decided at the last second to pull over and stop in. We couldn't be happier that we did! This place is such a gem. The interior was beautiful, the line moved quickly, and they replenished pastries that sold out. The malted cardamom latte was something I've never had and was delicious. We also got the maple lattes which were perfectly sweet. It was a Sunday so there were homemade donuts, they were still fresh and warm. We got the maple, browned butter and chocolate sugar. The savory scone, ham and cheese croissant and the Salvadoran breakfast cake were all tasty also!

We love Birchgrove! My son has a severe nut allergy (peanuts, pistachio, cashew, macadamia nut) and the staff is always so great about pointing out what is good to go, and things he should stay away from. Of course, it is all produced in the same facility, so please use your own judgement, this is just what works for our family! My family, co-workers, and friends have all enjoyed birthday and holiday treats from Birchgrove. Their donuts, cupcakes, and whoopie pies are not to be missed! And the Halloween treats they had this year were amazing!

Wow, what a gem! We randomly stopped by on our way out of town and couldn't be happier. There's street parking in front of the store but a lot of people were dropping by Monday morning! They kept bringing out small plates of new pastries as we waited in the line. There was some lovely drink specials for fall so I ordered the buttered brown sugar latte. It was fantastic! Gently sweetened and smooth. We also ordered the everything croissant, blueberry croissant, passion fruit croissant pastry (which in our opinion is their version of a cronut though they never called it that), banana bread, and pumpkin tea cake. All of it was great! I especially loved the passion fruit croissant pastry because it had an amazing flavor (but definitely on the dessert side rather than morning pastry side). Both everything and blueberry croissant had some filling and were flaky. The everything had cream cheese inside! The banana bread was soft and had a rich taste to it, and the pumpkin tea cake was surprisingly soft inside with a nice pumpkin flavor! The savory scone was ordered by a few people when we were there but we were too full to try anything else!

A decadent everything croissant with a surprise inside. Flaky, crispy crust yet holds the cream cheese perfectly.

It's always been busy when I've gone, but wait times aren't very long and the staff is pleasant. Needless to say, I got home and inhaled my turkey on a baguette. The only thing I think is a little bit of a bummer is the lack of more "traditional" topping options. I like my sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, and onion. The cafe does not offer tomatoes and only has pickled onions. Would be nice to have a little more choice when building your own sandwich. That said, I'm still a big fan and would get food from there again in a heartbeat.

My love for this place will never wane even though it's already so popular that it gets completely…read moreslammed every day during the period that is winter break for surrounding school systems -- and probably many other times as well. I love that they're socially conscious and really care about social justice and the environment. - They compost.* My pup discovered this after we emerged from a trail next to the back of the bakery. She found all this very scientifically interesting. - They serve in house with reusable metal utensils and plates, which you return to the counter. - They're committed to sourcing organic, sustainably produced flour from a few family-run farms. - Takeout containers (and I feel awful when having to use these at times) are waxed cardboard -- maybe professionally compostable or recyclable, but I suspect not. Still, better than plastic. Eat in if you can. Someday I'll remember to bring my own containers and see if they'll use them. The bread is world class. We've probably tried almost every loaf at this point. They tend towards being traditional styles with robust crusts and a good, slow, cold rise -- breads that take time to make. Our preferences lean towards the sourdoughs, the miche-type loaves, anything with olives, and the potato breads (for those of us with old teeth or missing baby teeth). But everything you could possibly order will be amazing. We loved the beautiful pain d'epi most recently, though the 10 year old (who doesn't have a full set of chompers right now) found it tough to consume without a good dip in Mom's stew at the end of the day. The only version my family cited as more beloved was from Maison Kayser -- yes, a chain, but a very good one where my kiddos literally cut their teeth. Pastries are shockingly good as well, particularly the laminated ones that someone must be getting up at 2 or 3 a.m. to prepare. Chocolate croissants and almond croissants are perfectly layered, generously filled with high quality chocolate (real chocolate, not Nutella!) or almond paste filling that is even good when cold. The "simplest" of pastries (not really at all simple for anyone's whose tried to make these), a plain croissant, will wow a purist. My kiddos love the perfectly frosted maple bun visit after visit. Savory pastries are often filled with beautifully caramelized / browned onions, cheese, and other ingredients depending on the whims of the chefs. Again, I don't think you can go wrong; we certainly never have. There are decent sandwiches and salads on the menu (from the perspective of the spoiled). Nothing is groundbreaking, but they're 200% competent and ingredients are consistently excellent. A recent Harvest Salad, for instance, included fresh and tender butter lettuce, winter squash roasted to tender perfection, nuts and dried fruit in perfect balance. We'd had about 10 different "harvest salads", in the past few weeks in VT at that point, but though this one was more simply designed than many, it was more delicious, given the impeccably fresh, high quality ingredients. We sometimes get here on the earlier side, but never seem able to score a breakfast sandwich, which seems to sell out fast. We like the down-to-earth staff, who smile when they mean it and don't when they don't -- and show fatigue when they need to and ought. I love that the management appears to be humane, opening later than usual when an ice storm makes driving conditions perilous. We recognize some staff members from some years past and we like the continuity a lot. Love the entire picture. All of it. * I just read that all VT households and businesses are required to compost per a state law passed in 2020. Cool! Red Hen seems to have a great sorting system set up, though, with many neat, well maintained bins lined up out back.

By the time I left this place around lunchtime I felt like I was part of the family. My three hour visit included a blueberry corn muffin, red pepper chicken risotto soup served with a fresh croissant, and coffee. All for $9. (note: cash only). The soup and croissant knocked my socks off. I had visions of Oliver Twist slurping up stew and saying, "please sir, I want some more sir." Mmm....just thinking about it now warms my stomach. Note: this place is no frills. Waterbury offers free community wifi but it can be spotty in this location. The charm of this place is definitely the outdoor patio and fact that you have to stroll through an alley to find it. Double note: they sell breads, gingersnap cookies, croissants and a few other baked treats. The owner told me that he has been operating via wholesale for years but just recently opted to open up for a mini café section. Hallelujah.
