I'm not local to Vermont, checked this place out during a trip due to some recommendations from locals I met throughout. It was one of the highlights for me, both in general and in regards to food. The people working their are kind, they seemingly pay their staff well, and give them health coverage as they have a "no tipping" policy but instead an optional donation to an organization. The place has a coffee shop atmosphere but they do sell some market goods in there and have some of their merch. Their sandwiches aren't special in regards to using a ton of ingredients or unique ones but I thoroughly enjoyed mine. They stick to simplicity with food that both looks and tastes fresh and they do it right. Their pastries and bread selections are really nice, I especially liked their Kouign-amann. If you're there for breakfast, I recommend the egg sandwich and add greens, ham, and their in-house hot sauce; it drives the price up a bit but the base price is roughly $5. Their maple creemee was also a nice touch, I was adamantly against the idea it'd be any different from soft serve but I was wrong and am happy to admit it. The Whoopie Pie has a nice cake texture, but not super sweet. Tastes like dark chocolate cake, with a lightly sweet cream filling. It's definitely not marshmallow fluff. I have a bone to pick with this company. I was driving through middle sex with my daughters, and we all agreed we wanted a sweet treat. So, we decided to stop by the creeme stand and pick up 3 vanilla cremmies. To our disappointment, instead of kind, cheerful workers, we had rude and disrespectful ones, especially a girl named ellie, who was incredibly rude from the start. Closer to a 4.5 Everything you would hope for in a bakery - very fresh bread and ingredients at reasonable prices. . My wife ordered the cranberry smoked turkey sandwich and thought it was one of her best meals of the trip, simply due the combination of fresh ingredients. I ordered the other smoked turkey sandwich which was pretty good. Cold sandwich is not really my thing, but I enjoyed it. The milk is good, but not sure I would order the maple steamed milk again. This is a review of the bread, which we bought at a farmers' market while on vacation. Back home in NYC, there are a handful of world-class bread bakeries, but for some reason most of the nicer groceries and food co-ops and farm markets carry bread from Bread Alone, a bakery up the Hudson Valley. This bread is edible, but only ok. Which has made me skeptical of bread from farm stands. Red Hen turned my skepticism upside down. The Ciabatta and the pair of rolls we bought (not even sure which formulation they were ... they didn't last long) were as good as anything from Sullivan Street Bakery or Amy's or Balthazar in NYC, as good as the best we had in Paris a couple of years ago. They REALLY know what they're doing. One more reason to come back to Vermont! read more

Awesome stop on our way to montreal. Quick stop off the highway and oh so Vermont! Camp Meade which consists of this restaurant , a chocolate shop, an art shop and some others. Excellent fresh food healthy ingredients, unique items. Sandwiches and lattes were 10/10. In the same building you can sample chocolate and art. Thank you again, Yelpers. I have no idea how else we would have ever stumbled upon this off-the-beaten path operational bakery and café. The patch of sunflowers and electric car charging stations kicked things off on the right foot and the party continued inside with the big display window showcasing the bakers in action. I should also add that this is a mini gourmet food store with wine, cheese, beer, ice cream, syrups and more. I thoroughly enjoyed my jasmine tea (the real kind with flower buds) and scones (lemon currant and maple). The maple icing on top was addictive. They run out of Almond Croissants a lot and the seating can be a little limited but the staff is always friendly and the product is consistent--I've been here countless times. We were visiting family in Montpelier which was about a 10 minute drive to Red Hen Baking. It was so easy to order online and pick up the delicious food. The French Toast was so delightful. We took rolls and bread home to NJ and our family wants us to drive back to get more. It was so good. We had lunch at the Tap House in Montpelier and the bread used on the grilled cheese came from the Red Hen. I'm still dreaming of it and can understand why the restaurant mentioned the bread on their menu. Wish they would open a bakery in NJ! read more

i've always enjoyed stopping at Red Hen when i'm in the area. the food is very good and they sell mostly local items, which is something i like. I ordered a "custom" sandwich recently, and the woman was very kind and told me that what i wanted was similar to something they had on the menu. she added my extra ingredients and i ended up getting the sandwich for a little cheaper. nice environment. i think you should go at least once. some other reviews are complaining about the food they have for people with specific diet restrictions... i recommend going in if you are able to eat gluten.... read more

In a cute little area off the highway, this bakery was calling me! I got an almond milk latte, which was ok (the espresso felt a little harsh to me, but maybe that's the way they make it here?). I think the real gift of coming here isn't the coffee but the baked goods. I had a delightfully chewy and crispy chocolate chip cookie - how is it possible to have the best of both worlds? They definitely mastered it. We also got some delicious wheat bread, and they sliced it for us! They have all kinds of goodies in here, maple syrup, beer, wine, etc, so of course we splurged all around. The place was poppin on a Saturday morning around 9am, so you know it's gotta be good! A little rough around the edges in terms of decor, this place has some of the best pastries in the area. You can go to Burlington or Montpelier if you'd rather, but this is one place not to miss! The pastries are fresh and I have yet to try something I don't like. They have chocolate snails and pannetone that's to die for! They also carry a small variety of wines and beers, some local.
