The drive through the Catoctin Mountain Park to get there was beautiful. We reserved an igloo in advance but it ended up being a very misty and foggy day. However, as a result we had a very peaceful relaxing time. We enjoyed our food and wine and the overall experience. We definitely plan on going back. read more

Igloo experience was great!!! It took some adjusting to the temperature, as it was not incredibly warm, but it was a cute setting with comfortable chairs and great view. I recommend bringing a blanket and heavy jacket to keep comfortable. Our server, Josh, was GREAT!! Super attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. This winery has been on my bucket list of wine tours. And I'm glad I was able to get here. Made a reservation for the igloo. We had the time of our lives. The view was everything. It was a bit chilly in the igloo. We ordered the crab soup. It was more broth and soupy and not so much crab meat in it. The pretzel was good and warm. The cheese mustard sauce was not the best. Our served Ms Sarah was sooo awesome. The grounds and the bathroom were very clean. I can't wait to come back and sip again in the spring and summer. Add this place to your wine tour. read more

This winery is fabulous! We arrived on a summer Saturday right when they opened at noon, and in less than an hour the parking lot was full and the place was hopping. There are plenty of outdoor seats but it doesn't appear that they have much space indoors, so come only if it's a nice day. You order wine and light food at the counter then take a seat at a table or the deck chairs overlooking a beautiful view of the mountains. Maryland wines are ... okay, if you like sweet wines. I didn't mind their dry offerings, though, and the setting couldn't have been more perfect. Worth the visit. read more

You may not know this gem is here if you're not a local. Take the winding driveway UP the hill, park and find a beautiful spot to sit, sip and feel inspired. We went on a Thursday afternoon, it was quiet and the view spectacular. Greeted by a friendly staff member we place our order for a Red sangria & a charcuterie selection. My friend and I had a girls day out last weekend and she suggested we visit the Red Heifer Winery. Yes please;) There was much outdoor seating overlooking the beautiful mountains between Hagerstown and Frederick, MD. You can reserve the igloos, which have heaters, or the cabanas. Groups of seven or more must call in advance. There was a bachelorette party on the day of our visit. We placed our order just inside the downstairs area. The owners live in the home upstairs. I ordered a wine flight with Blanc de Franc, Blueberry, Peach, and my favorite, Sweet Heifer. We also ordered homemade chips and Mediterranean hummus which we both loved. My friend had a frozen mango drink with she enjoyed. They have a limited menu but allow you to bring your own food. They sell charcuterie boards, salads, paninis, homemade chips and hummus and other snack options. No one under 21 is permitted. But you can bring your friendly fur baby on a leash. This is a great place to unwind and sip some local wine with many options. No other alcohol is sold. read more

A nice winery with great views and variety. A group of 5 of us came to the winery at open and were able to request one of the reserved canopies. You can't make a reservation beforehand unless it's a special occasion or large party. To reserve, you just need to spend a certain amount per person ($25) and get it for about 2-3 hours. We did a variety of flights, bottles, and slushies and had a great time. Their reds were very well balanced, and my favorite was their Vidal. The only reason I'm giving this a 4 is because of that reservation time frame. Once our 2.5 hours was up, we asked for a small extension, as we were having a good time and still ordering. Once another 45 minutes passed, the server came with our bill and we were asked to move from the reserved area to another table. While this was not an issue, the winery was not busy enough to need us to move and another canopy was open. Unfortunately, it led us to pay our bill and leave and went to another winery. I just loved this little hidden place! It was about five of us for one of our girlfriends birthday. The igloos were amazing about 10 of them and extremely insulated inside for these cold days that haven't left us yet! The wine was amazing our server definitely broke the wines down and was able to take the time to walk us through our first time a huge shoutout to him. The sunset hitting through the trees with a few glasses of wine, one of my favorites wineries i've been to. The board was a bit of everything to pick at. They did let us bring a little speaker to play our tunes. Thus far, this is my favorite winery in MD for ambiance, taste, quality, and value. There are larger wineries around the state that are lovely too but Red Heifer deserves love for the smaller operation they have. Because low unsubstantiated reviews really bother me, let me explain my experience to dispel or provide an alternate opinion of some of the negative things people have posted. I read a review about the owner. Speaking to my experience, owners are TOTALLY GREAT. I had an unassuming conversation with her while I was waiting for my cheese/crackers and wine at the counter. Ended up talking to her for about 15 minutes about a variety of topics, laughing and not knowing who she was until about half way in to the conversation until I asked. Totally sweet. The owners are down to earth, passionate, and take pride in what they do. To speak to comments about price. Their pricing - average to low-ish in my experience with wineries around the state. We got a few bottles that were totally delicious for around $15 each, you don't need to break the bank. Many vineyards I have been to around the state are above this price point, bottles starting around $20. If you are balling on an even tighter budget, get a wine slushie! Theirs are totally wonderful. Even my husband, a brewery representative and long time craft beer guy in the industry, is converted. He keeps asking when we are going back to have more. Bottom line, support your local winemakers. They are small businesses, folks with dogs and kids and bills, trying to do most harvesting and planting and maintenance themselves, trying to make it work. And these guys are damn good at it. If you want something more budget friendly, there are lots more commercial options to get at local package stores. Pro tip- order some cheese, they have local Amish cheese there and it's absolutely delicious. Additionally, if you see their dog, pet him. He's lovely. read more

I found this super cute and amazing winery on IG! Glad we made a decision to go out there and give it a try! This place was absolutely beautiful. The view, the Igloos are super clean and beautiful! The staff was on point. They were super nice, very inviting. When I made my reservation the igloos were all taken, so we got a fire bowl. But as soon as we arrived the lady at the front told us that she had good news for us. She had upgraded us to the igloo. Not only we got upgraded, but the service was amazing. And they were busy, but not once we felt unattended. Definitely worth the road trip to the mountains... Thank you Red Heifer winery for such a beautiful Sunday evening! Probably the best wines overall that I've ever tasted at a winery. Selected the flight of dry wines, literally liked every single one. Even the whites - and I usually don't care for white wine. At most wineries, I'll try a flight and from 5- 7- samples, I'll find one or two that I like, the rest will be mediocre or not-so-good. At Red Heifer, they are all Great! Ended up buying a bottle of each to take home. These are seriously, significantly good wines. Nice, quiet, out-of-the way small country location. Very friendly, and they ARE open on Sunday, at noon. We almost missed this place because a tip was left implying they're not open on Sunday. Here's my tip -- call them! The owner did say when the weather's bad (winter, etc.) they may not open unless someone shows up, and it's good to call ahead. They live at the winery, so they're available at the hours they post. Nice atmosphere, they're building a patio, host live music and entertainment on Weekends, etc. They're planning a Cajun Boil June 2, but I think they're sold out. I will definitely watch their calendar and try to get back for one of the special weekend events. The area has lots of hiking, fishing, and camping spots.. so make a weekend of it and camp out, fish, have some wine, and enjoy getting away from the urbane urban overflow that is the East Coast. read more

Small winery, kinda out of the way but worth a stop. I'd hesitate to call this area a 'wine trail' because most of their neighbors are equally small, mom & pop type places. Wines trended towards dry but not everything was. One of the co-owners was my server, and he talked me thru the history of the place. It all started as a farm decades ago, and the deal was settled when the sellers threw in the 'red heifer' to seal the deal. For the wines, nothing blew me away but I certainly didn't dislike anything. The Vidal Blank was tart & dry, and the Chardonnay citrucy. The Cab Franc was a bit unusual; no spiciness or tobacco notes; maybe a tad bit of cherry? Or were my taste buds asleep? I did like one of their Chambourcins though. PS - the farm you pass DOES NOT belong to the winery! I stopped for my mandatory goat picture, but it doesn't belong to the winery family. read more

Went with a friend to discover some Maryland wines. Many different wines here - but only a few available for the tasting - still a nice variety. I enjoyed those and than requested to taste their Port style wine - small fee. YUMMY! Bought a bottle of that and a couple other bottles. Relaxed outside with a wine slushie. It was a hot day - but not too bad here. High enough up the hill to catch those lovely breezes and patted their very friendly dog. I would only make one suggestion - food. Doesn't have to be fancy - but I might enjoy a bottle of wine on location if I had some food to go with it. If you have it - I didn't see any sign of it. Very much enjoyed the views, the very knowledgeable wine-maker's telling of his craft, and the quiet. If you're tired of the wineries that are so busy you can barely elbow your way to the counter - go here - before too many people discover it! read more

We rented an igloo for a group of 5. It was nice and the server was very accommodating. It was a bit expensive for what it was, but we had a nice time. I'd like to offer a recommendation though. Our 5th person was our DD. He was still expected to spend the minimum of $40. I don't agree with this at all. You should be pleased the group has a DD and a responsible person will be getting the group home safely. Probably would not do this again mainly because of the cost. read more

Made an impromptu stop at Red Heifer Winery after a Sunday Funday shopping antiques and miscellaneous in the Hagerstown area. Yes, Red Heifer is a little out there. NO, you will not be disappointed if you go. The grounds are gorgeous, our trip was in March I want to say and snow was actually falling the Smithsburg area adding to the beauty of it all. The 'staff' who seem to be the Husband/Wife owner/operator team were great. Such a fun visit great wines. We tasted four that they had to offer and ended up purchasing the Blueberry and Catawba. Both are very very good. The blueberry was my favorite and I feel I have been craving it ever since. Many Maryland wineries/vineyards offer fruit wines but this honestly was unlike anything else I had tried. It was not syrupy or too sweet but very refreshing. We 'ran' into Red Heifer since at another wine event and I think I kick myself on a fairly frequent occurrence for only buying the glass of the blueberry wine and not 123 bottles. I have researched on their site that they do sell wines at a couple stores in the Hagerstown area and they are served at some restaurants in the area as well. Just hoping they spread out to my Walkersville/Frederick neck of the woods! I guess all that does is give me an excuse to pack a picnic and head back up. The burdens we must bear.... read more

Wonderful experience. A legacy spanning 7 decades, 4 generations, and 100 acres with one red heifer thrown in as part of the deal certainly has been smiled upon by the wine gods. Do yourself a favor - venture out into the scenic MD countryside, find the wine pioneer in you and make the trek up the long and winding drive through the charmingly unassuming farm, and stumble upon the diamond-in-the-rough that is the beautifully converted stone barn of Red Heifer Winery. Pack a picnic and your palette for good wine! The assortment is not overbearing; one each red and white dry, one off-dry, and 3 sweet on the day of our visit - and all of them perfect examples of how to grow and produce wine along the East coast. We were greeted warmly by the winemaker's lovely Mom and Grandmother, as he and his wife were away at an event for the day. Friendly conversation punctuated our visit nicely, as our "girl's day out" group took in the scenery and its fruits. Cozy tasting room, but the patio right outside the door is expansive. We were a group of 7, and there was still room for more however. Having only opened officially early last fall, the service, facility, and product has just the right balance of stellar customer service already. Perhaps it is the good luck charm of its namesake. Go, you must. I recommend everything! $5 gives you 5 tastes. Also members of the Antietam Highlands Wine Trail! From their website, they host dinners, music, and events on site! Great tasting wines here. I went here with several friends that knew that recommended this place, and we had a good time. We did a wine tasting, and we ended up getting a few bottles. My favorite dry wine they have would the signature Red Heifer, and my favorite sweet wine would be the Niagara. I can really taste the grapes in the Niagara wine. They also had live music tonight due to the Small Business Saturday, but I do not believe they do that every week. Great place, great wine, and great people. read more
