I have found very, very few good lobster rolls in the state of Michigan and you can count on this one to deliver. Fresh, tasty and a big enough portion that my wife and I split it for a light lunch. Fries were also first class. This is a must stop in a very restaurant populated area.

I'd come across them while doing my HW for the trip, but without really knowing the area, I'd thought that staying in South Haven meant I wouldn't get the chance to visit, but after stopping in to The Flying Saucer in South Haven and picking up their beans there for the house, I learned everything is kinda close on this part of the coast! This is their main location, right in the heart of Saugatuck. It's cozy and colorful, warm and inviting, and filled with some incredibly sweet people. Oh yeah. They have A LOT of great coffee too! Their specialty and seasonal drinks all sounded delicious, but I'm a purist in pursuit of the best cup of black coffee, here for the single origins and blends that are sourced and roasted by this skilled team. Walking in I was faced by a massive wall filled with beautiful bags of beans from all over the world, each labeled with notes on origin, processing and flavor profile. I set my sights on a pour over and when the cashier said I could choose anything from the wall, I was gobsmacked (that's a funny word). The range was so impressive, with great representation from all over the world, processed in all different ways, making the choice quite difficult. It's a good thing I used my time in line to look at all of the options, and I settled on a white honey processed coffee called Villa Sarchi, which was delightful. If I have one quibble it's that they didn't have an actual pour over menu and this is simply because I enjoy asking the baristas about the coffees. This spot is super hot, with a line out the door at all times, so despite the barista at the counter being incredibly accommodating, I couldn't in good conscience hold up the patrons behind me with too many questions or returns to the wall. I also tried their espresso lime tonic for a beverage to stroll with and enjoyed the slight sweet and tart drink very much on a hot day. Uncommon also has a great menu of food offerings and we had a bagel breakfast sandwich and one of their MASSIVE savory scones. I wish I'd asked or been asked about warming the scone because it definitely needed it, but holy hell this thing was packed with cheesy goodness and the perfect foil to my naturally sweet coffee. Normally I go home with one bag of coffee as a souvenir, but I couldn't help but buy two, which were in addition to the beans I also bought in South Haven! In total I think I sampled about 5 different Uncommon roasts and loved them all! I loved this place so much I looked to buy merch, but sadly they had run out of the sizes I needed. I got a black coffee on my second visit and it wasn't very good. Service: friendly but slow. I was SO glad to have pitcher on pitcher of cold brew back at the AirBNB so I didn't have to wait. The times I came, this place was popping and it (expectedly) took some time. Hours: I was out for an early morning walk in the six o'clock am hour and several other middle-aged to elderly people were circling like vultures waiting for their caffeine fix. I feel like in peak season bumping hours to 6 or even 6:30 might do numbers for them. Food: I ordered a buttered bagel for my kids the first time in and it took a long, long time. I think they forgot about it. It appeared to be a grocery store style bagel and was ok. I'm telling you, this place looks beautiful and it's got great energy. It just so happened the business and the coffee on just a few visits didn't quite land. I would definitely encourage folks to try it out, it just missed the mark more than I was hoping for.

I have been to the Red Dock twice in the month of August 2014. After the 1st experience I was hesitant to return because the staff was SO rude it was unbelievable. I returned the 2nd time hoping for a better experience because the location is great and the food is pretty good. This time they proved yet again that they don't care one bit about service and hospitality. The server was unbelievably rude and snippy right from the start, and if the owner is the old gray haired man with a goatee, he's even worse! If he is the owner, I suggest he sell and go do something he loves because it is clear he HATES the restaurant business, or he would treat his customers with respect. I have been in the restaurant business for over 20 years so I understand being busy, or rude customers, but this was not the case. They are just flat out RUDE and treat people like crap. One other note to add, it's cash only, so our party of 3 each had 20 dollar bills (after 1 of us had to run to the ATM up the street because they don't even have an ATM on site!). We asked the server for change, and she told us she couldn't break (3) $20's. That's where I drew the line and said to her, you mean to tell me you are a cash only establishment and can't break (3) $20's on a Saturday night??!! REDICULOUS! After she argued with me, she grabbed the money and went inside only to come out and throw the change on the table and walk away. Unbelievable!! It's too bad for me because I actually loved the rum punch, but not the price, $8!! There are SO many other choices in Douglas/Saugatuck to dine where they appreciate the hard earned money people are spending to patronize their establishment. read more

We pulled up to the red dock today on a boat we rented. We were planning and stopping at this beach bar all day. We were celebrating my birthday and my dads 70th birthday today. Three of us went to the bar. It seemed like a fun bar.. coolers of beer, then I saw tequila, I asked if the guy could make margaritas he said yes in a very rude way ....followed by I don't have salt or a blender...which was totally fine by us. My dad nicely asked what kind of mix you use, the guy again rudely groaned, slammed Open his cooler and pulls of a jug of mix and slammed it again on the bar. Then my mom walks up with a red cup of water from our boat and an even grumpier guy opens the door and screams red cup bye!!! These people have no sense of customer service. Do not own a bar that is supported by tourism and be rude to paying customer. No one should go to this dump. Looks like a cool spot but ruined by the owner and staff read more

filthy bathrooms and poor service. old, white-haired guy was very rude. I think he was the owner, the way he was bossing around his staff. their "famous" sangria was a syrupy mess, i guess due to it sitting out in the hot sun all day. the view was the best thing about the place...be prepared to pay with cash only. another table had to send one of their group off to an ATM, because their server didn't inform them before they ordered. "cash only" places usually have something to hide, and this place seemed a bit shady. read more

The Red Dock Bar in Douglas, Michigan, has undergone a fantastic transformation under its new ownership. They now allow dogs again, making it a perfect spot for pet lovers. The ambiance has improved significantly, replacing the intimidating bouncers and angry music with a relaxed, welcoming vibe. The staff is friendly, and my dog absolutely loved it. It's a much nicer and more inviting place to enjoy a drink by the water. read more

Loud enough to be enjoyed but still conversation-friendly. Boatwerks is quickly becoming our favorite restaurant. Whether we are sitting at the bar for appetizers and drinks, or enjoying dinner we have never had a food or drink that we haven't loved. Food presentation is attractive. And service is always excellent, especially at the bar.
