I love my coffee, so when I travel, I always seek out a local roaster, and I am SO GLAD that I found Uncommon during my first visit to Lake Michigan! I'd come across them while doing my HW for the trip, but without really knowing the area, I'd thought that staying in South Haven meant I wouldn't get the chance to visit, but after stopping in to The Flying Saucer in South Haven and picking up their beans there for the house, I learned everything is kinda close on this part of the coast! This is their main location, right in the heart of Saugatuck. It's cozy and colorful, warm and inviting, and filled with some incredibly sweet people. Oh yeah. They have A LOT of great coffee too! Their specialty and seasonal drinks all sounded delicious, but I'm a purist in pursuit of the best cup of black coffee, here for the single origins and blends that are sourced and roasted by this skilled team. Walking in I was faced by a massive wall filled with beautiful bags of beans from all over the world, each labeled with notes on origin, processing and flavor profile. I set my sights on a pour over and when the cashier said I could choose anything from the wall, I was gobsmacked (that's a funny word). The range was so impressive, with great representation from all over the world, processed in all different ways, making the choice quite difficult. It's a good thing I used my time in line to look at all of the options, and I settled on a white honey processed coffee called Villa Sarchi, which was delightful. If I have one quibble it's that they didn't have an actual pour over menu and this is simply because I enjoy asking the baristas about the coffees. This spot is super hot, with a line out the door at all times, so despite the barista at the counter being incredibly accommodating, I couldn't in good conscience hold up the patrons behind me with too many questions or returns to the wall. I also tried their espresso lime tonic for a beverage to stroll with and enjoyed the slight sweet and tart drink very much on a hot day. Uncommon also has a great menu of food offerings and we had a bagel breakfast sandwich and one of their MASSIVE savory scones. I wish I'd asked or been asked about warming the scone because it definitely needed it, but holy hell this thing was packed with cheesy goodness and the perfect foil to my naturally sweet coffee. Normally I go home with one bag of coffee as a souvenir, but I couldn't help but buy two, which were in addition to the beans I also bought in South Haven! In total I think I sampled about 5 different Uncommon roasts and loved them all! I loved this place so much I looked to buy merch, but sadly they had run out of the sizes I needed. Very much looks the part, but was left wanting a little more tbh. First off, vibes wise: amazing. Beautiful old house converted to a coffee shop with a dreamy garden in the back. Incredible. Coffee wise: fair. I ordered a few specialty summer cold brews for my wife and I and they were tiny, and my wife's was well-made with cold foam and cinnamon, but mine barely had a dollop (I gave her the good one, aren't I a nice husband?) I got a black coffee on my second visit and it wasn't very good. Service: friendly but slow. I was SO glad to have pitcher on pitcher of cold brew back at the AirBNB so I didn't have to wait. The times I came, this place was popping and it (expectedly) took some time. Hours: I was out for an early morning walk in the six o'clock am hour and several other middle-aged to elderly people were circling like vultures waiting for their caffeine fix. I feel like in peak season bumping hours to 6 or even 6:30 might do numbers for them. Food: I ordered a buttered bagel for my kids the first time in and it took a long, long time. I think they forgot about it. It appeared to be a grocery store style bagel and was ok. I'm telling you, this place looks beautiful and it's got great energy. It just so happened the business and the coffee on just a few visits didn't quite land. There are coffee shops that serve great coffee... and then there are coffee shops that make you instantly feel something. The second I walked into Uncommon Coffee Roasters, I was hit with the smell of fresh bread. It immediately took me back to my grandma's kitchen. She used to bake a loaf of bread just for me--with no nuts, because she knew that's how I liked it. Walking into her house, I always knew exactly what she was making. It's funny how a smell can transport you somewhere in an instant. Then I looked over at the bakery case. Mistake. Everything looked fresh, homemade, and absolutely beautiful. We had plans to spend the rest of the day walking around Saugatuck, so I talked myself out of buying a loaf... and regretted that decision before we were even back out the door. Despite the line stretching from the counter almost to the entrance, the staff handled it like absolute pros. Everyone behind the counter seemed completely in sync, moving quickly without making the experience feel rushed. Watching them work was almost entertaining in itself. The shop has a colorful, artsy personality that fits Saugatuck perfectly. It feels modern without losing that cozy small-town charm. Between the artwork, the cheerful cups (seriously... how cute are they?), and people scattered throughout reading, chatting, working on laptops, or simply enjoying their coffee, it felt like the kind of place you naturally want to linger. As for the coffee... We ordered three different drinks and somehow all landed on winners. My Don't Be Salty cold brew (cold brew with caramel and salted caramel cold foam) was phenomenal. Another in our group ordered the Caramel Silk latte, and judging by the smile after the first sip, I'd call that a success too. I honestly couldn't tell you what our third friend ordered... only that all three of us agreed we'd happily order our drinks again. Some coffee shops are just a quick caffeine stop. Traditionally, I just get a plain 'ol black coffee, but when I visited here, I was enticed to get a salted caramel nitro iced coffee with some sort of caramel foam stuff. Oddly, at about 6 p.m., there was a line, but I wanted coffee because it was a little gloomy and brisk out, yet I decided to do something a little different than my boring norm. Well, it was one of the best (if not THE best) "coffee" I have ever had! Done! Also, the people didn't seem snooty about my naivety regarding "fancy" coffee drinks, so that was nice. I'd like to add that if you don't drink black coffee, you're not a coffee fan; you're a fan of coffee-flavored drinks... and I'm an elitist for black coffee. I'm so glad I stopped by here while walking downtown. They have cute seating outside and some inside, but all of it was taken when I visited on a Wednesday morning. It was a bit difficult to walk in and get in line since there were so many people. The guy at the register wasn't friendly, sadly. He didn't offer any suggestions or tell us about the monthly specials. Our orders may have been different if we had known. We placed our order for a coffee, one energy drink, and some breakfast bagel sandwiches. The sandwiches were alright and basic, but I'd maybe skip them next time. I will say that the egg was fresh and fluffy. I was searching for the pesto aioli though and it was nonexistent. For the drinks, I got a lotus energy that was yummy. I'd order one again. The coffee my spouse got was good and smooth. They talked about how it was the best they'd had so far while exploring Michigan, which is saying something. We visit this cozy local coffee shop every time we are in town. It appears to be the story of the show because there is always a steady line of folks ordering fun, seasonal drinks and baked goods. They offer delicious cold brew and always have several flavorful and creative seasonal drinks to choose from. The space inside feels like a living room or college town coffee shop and the front patio wraps around with umbrellas and a tree canopy overhead. This was a very cute and cozy coffee spot! There was no parking near the coffee shop but we did enjoy the walk there. It's perfectly placed for tourist and locals to visit before or after shopping! I did have a little wait for my latte which was fine but seemed odd as I was the first one who ordered an iced latte with almond milk and was the last to receive my order. We're always looking for small roasters and coffee sites to visit on our getaway weekends. This time we landed in Douglas, MI and drove the 3 minutes to get some Uncommon coffee. The line was concerning when we arrived but it moved quicker than one would expect! They had their fall special lattes and my wife got the Apple Crisp latte and I the Salty cold brew. When we were at the register we were excited to order two breakfast sandwiches. We were told they were not serving sandwiches due to lack of materials... It was unfortunate that so many were turned off due to a lack of communication or signage that would have suggested they weren't serving food. Despite that, we enjoyed our coffee and the server gave us a free sample of their miel as an apology for not having food, etc. It sounds as though they run out of material quite frequently. A sign saying as much would go a long way. We were there at 9:30am, and one would expect to be able to order a sandwich! read more

If 4.5 were an option that's what they'd get, but the restaurant business is hard and I have mainly positives. 1. High quality coffee and bevs - one of the best matcha lattes I've had. 2. My bagel was delish and clearly baked fresh; egg (baked egg soufflé) was pretty good though not the right size for the sandwich. Loved that you could build your own. Only downside was my incredibly pathetic tomato which was quite anemic ... its tomato season in tomato-growing land... with all the other local and high quality offerings I expect better. I picked that slice right off and didn't eat it. Husband got roasted tomatoes on his sandwich and those were the way to go. He liked his much more. 3. Scone was fantastic and giant. Loved that you can also purchase day-old baked goods half off (got a yummy and giant cookie as well) 4. They have the ordering and food prep nicely streamlined, which helps offset the intimidating line - it moves super fast 5. Is there a better first stop in the morning to get caffeinated on a vacation in Saugatuck? I ordered through the outdoor window , which is really helpful incase you have a dog with you. My go-to was the iced mocha (made with powdered chocolate and choice of milk) and the salted caramel cold foam cold brew. Both were perfect on a morning leading to a hot sunny day. I got the almond croissant, but it was wayyyyy too sweet for my liking. And the croissant part wasn't fluffy and airy like I was expected. The coffee was very tasty, but nothing mind blowing or anything! There was absolutely no where to sit in the awkward sitting area either. And our barista was not friendly at all. While staying in Saugatuck this past week to visit a friend, I had to find a coffee spot. I can't seem to go anywhere these days without finding a coffee spot to nurture my creative mind. While Saugatuck does have lots of places that sell coffee, along with ice cream, it seems that most places sold coffee for the pick-up and go routine crowd. Anyone who reads my reviews knows that I am the type to find my own nook where I can work. Uncommon Ground is the place here in Saugatuck, and it worked well for me and my husband, who needed good drip coffee and that spot. Uncommon Ground is well staffed and has good service. There is also ample seating. I was impressed with how well laid out and how much they used up the space without wasting it. Now, the coffee was delicious. We are picky coffee drinkers, and although our friend meant well, he had made dark water and not coffee, so we were pleased to have found this spot. The baked goods are delicious too. We both had a delicious ham and cheese croissant, and I also had a cranberry orange scone that was very tasty with my coffee. read more
