Walked over to Respite while staying in town. It was early so I was the only customer, but they have ample seating outside as well as some seating inside. I even brought my pups with me so I posted them outside by the bench. Respite had DELICIOUS sounding summer specials with blueberry, but I opted for cold brew (cold Brew made from our featured MadCap Bolt Coffee Blend for 12 hours or longer). I also ordered a granola bowl (Muesli) - it was pretty premium at $12 BUT it was freshly put together and a really good plain full fat yogurt with really nice fresh fruit. I ordered a green tea latte and ended up with a hot tea that tasted terrible, definitely not what was ordered. A lady asked if she could help me while another loudly interrupted saying we ordered a hot tea. I threw the tea away and left. To make it worse, I was charged $5 for a " hot tea" that I threw away. I wished we had more time in this cute coffee shop that we visited over the weekend. Our friend in Saugatuck had pointed out this coffee shop, and I am glad that he did. We had originally gone up the road to some outdoor coffee shop, which was not a convenient place to be with a laptop and coffee. So, my husband and I immediately decided to check this place out. From the outside, Respite appears more like a meet and greet coffee shop, but when we walked in, we noticed how well it was set up with plenty of tables, nicely supplied with study lamps at each table. The best part, it appears each table had an available outlet. This is widely important when you have a laptop such as my husband's that dies quickly. Overall, the inside reminded me of some French cafe, very nice. Even better than the tables was the service. I can't begin to tell you how this coffee shop, although small, had the nicest people out of any restaurants we had visited during our trip. The baristas were invested in getting to know us, and not on some superficial level. That speaks volumes. The nicest part was that they were tossing out some old donuts and offered them to us, which was super sweet. The drip coffee was excellent as well. Their house blend had some mocha flavor to it and it went well with the delightful hazelnut/ espresso cake we had. This cake had a nice, light whipped espresso topping with hazelnuts as decor. Very tasty but not over the top. I plan to come back next time I am in the area. read more

Peggy was the best host you could ask for very friendly great suggestions that all worked out great. We had a mocha latte and a tiramisu latte with a heated almond croissant heated (to die for) and a mini palmiere. There was table of locals that provided great conversation and we sat at the front table by the big picture window and people walking by walking their dogs waved at us which was very cool. The food is just amazing and full of flavor. Everything we got was fantastic. The service was honestly the friendliest and greatest. In fact most everywhere around town in Douglas was just accepting and friendly. There are some small tables with comfy chairs inside plus a great outdoor lounge and patio to sit. I love this little coffee shop! It's located in the heart of downtown Douglas so you can walk to all the cute stores before or after stopping here. They have an extensive drink menu, a pastry cabinet filled with decadent sweets and savory snacks. They also have a pretty diverse menu consisting of sandwiches, wraps, salads and toasted breads. Today I had a Raspberry French Soda, my mom had an Iced Latte and we shared the Toast Flight which consisted of one slice of their Avocado Toast, Feeling Fruity Toast and Lavender Honey Toast and 3 sides of fresh berries. Everything was delicious and the service was quick and friendly. They have inside and outside seating available. This is always one of my favorite places to visit. read more

We stayed in downtown Douglas at my uncles condo for a week, one of those days we went kayaking at running river kayaks in downtown (which was great) after the morning trip the owner said if you guys like great coffee you have to try my sisters shop, so that's what led us to respite. Nestled in downtown Douglas was this lovely little coffee shop. Baristas were friendly and quick service! We literally stoped here every morning after hearing about it so 3x. Everyday I got the iced vanilla latte which was the perfect blend of coffee taste to sweetness, not overpowering with sweetness like most other places. My wife would get the honey lavender latte which was incredible as well. The only disappointing part of this place was that we didn't try it earlier in the week to be able to enjoy it more. Definitely a must try if you are into coffee! Perfect start to the day. read more

If I could've made this 3.5 stars I would. This seems to be a very popular coffee and breakfast place in Douglas - especially in summer. I ordered the Tourist Wrap for $12 or $13 and a regular coffee. My sister-in-law got two Tourist Wraps. The coffee came quickly, but we waited for almost a half hour for the wraps. We were the only ones in the store at first, but a line of 15 people grew quickly. The wraps and coffee were good, but I felt the food is quite overpriced. They have a goldmine here so I'm not surprised they are charging what they are charging. The staff were busting their humps, so I can't blame them entirely on the slow service. The reduction in rating is due to slow service and overpriced food. The coffee here is really good, but overpriced (and small) for anything fancy. read more

Loved the staff and coffee/smoothies we had here! The Berry Bliss in particular was delicious and I had it each morning I was in town. I assume they're going through the same staffing issues as the rest of the area, but even with 4-5 people on the team was having issues with order management. This wasn't the fault of the team so much as a lack of management guidance, as the team didn't seem to have assigned workstations or a manager calling out orders and ensuring fulfillment. Been stopping at Respite on and off for years and it's always had the same issue, slow service. I say that not to speak badly about the staff, this completely falls on the ownership that only has two employees working in the summer season when there's a line practically out the door every single day. These poor girls are doing the best the can but when you have one person making food and serving food and another person taking orders and making drinks...it's not going to be a smooth process. Also, if you're going to advertise that you have Nitro Cold Brew, most people would assume you have it on tap, not in a can. The location is phenomenal and what we've actually had has been good but they need properly staff their super popular coffee shop so you don't have customers waiting 30+ minutes for a breakfast sandwich and aren't working your employees to death. read more

I ordered the Lavender Toast and the bread was barely toasted and had way too much goat cheese on it that they didn't even spread out like the previous orders I've received? I couldn't taste the honey that should be drizzled throughout? Very disappointed that the consistency is NOT there with the standard menu items. Also they are commonly out of ripe avocados and unable to get my Husbands favorite- Avocado Toast. Today they ran out of waffle mix by 11:00am? What's going on? Is this a café of what? Who orders your stock? You need to get it together, or you're going to lose valuable customers. ONE HOUR TO TOAST A BAGEL! DO NOT THINK THIS WILL BE A QUICK STOP! Food orders (even just a toasted bagel with pre-packaged plain cream cheese) took a full hour for EACH CUSTOMER. The worst part is that they don't even give you a heads-up that it will take a while. Once our order came, they only got one of the bagels right and the other was a different menu item. We waited another 10 minutes and then just left. I walked back in to check on the bagels after 45 minutes of waiting and they were unapologetic. Based on other reviews, I'm realizing this is a normal complaint for this place. These clowns need to learn how to operate a business. What a joke. read more

Worst service ever! Ordered a soy latte and a wrap. 10 minutes later I'm called up to the counter to get my latte and it's dairy milk not soy. No apologies they say they will remake it. It was good. 20 minutes later no wrap so I went up to the counter and asked the young woman working where it was. She looked very confused - again no apology - and said we will make it for you. I waited 15 more minutes and they just kept making lattes and never made it. Eventually I had to just go to the counter and ask for a refund. It was literally one of the strangest experiences I'm not sure of the two working spaces out or thought the other was making it or what. But the latte was good. read more

Strolled through Douglas and wanted a cute coffee shop feel and stopped here. Cute and small for sure, but you get the local coffee shop feel. I referred to this place via yelp and another review mentioned they only serve to go coffee cups, but to make it clear they don't just have to go cups. I ordered my cappuccino for here and got a real cup. They have the usual coffee shop items, along with a nice selection of food items. I give them four stars only because I thought my cappuccino was a little too bland. My boyfriend had an espresso and the coffee bean didn't have much flavor either. Their food is good, but I ordered a yogurt bowl for $6 and it was a little smaller than I expected. If they change the coffee bean, I'm sure their coffee will be even better. I'm from Chicago, but if I were to swing through Douglas again, I would definitely stop here again and would recommend to others. read more

We had an amazing experience at Respite this past July 4th. A group of eight of us thought that Respite might be open to grab an ice cream cone and wait out the traffic-jam after the fireworks. One in our group walked ahead and, unfortunately, Respite was closed. He did see a couple locking the door and commented we were all checking to see if they were open for ice cream. The lovely young lady and nice young man said they were just grabbing some water after the fireworks. This was her mom's place. She offered to open up just for us and help us with our ice cream 'fix.' How often does this happen anymore, even in a small town? Not only did they open up and serve us, they were extremely pleasant and warm to us all. This was definitely an 'above and beyond' moment. If you have over 2 hours to wait for 2 iced coffees and a breakfast sandwich, which we never got,, this is the place for you. I would have given it no stars if I could. People behind us got their drinks and food before we did. When I asked them about at least our drinks, they seemed like I was bothering them and offered up no explanation. When I checked after an hour, my drinks were sitting on the counter with melted ice, after they had said they would bring them out. When she tried to give them to me, I asked for fresh. She didn't know how long they had been sitting there. I had to ask for one to be made again because I ordered coconut milk and she made it with regular milk. She said they were incredibly busy, but we saw people come and go after us with their food and drink. There were many other people that were waiting like we did. I always prefer to use locally owned businesses, but am really wishing there was a Tim Horton's nearby. I finally went in a 3rd time, approaching 2 hours, to ask about our single breakfast sandwich again after I asked a couple, who walked in, got their food, and left said they ordered theirs a half hour after I did. They didn't know where my sandwich was. They could have just made it right there as I made it evident that everyone else was served, even after we had ordered ours. They didn't. At that point, I just asked for a refund because they have no clue about customer service. They refunded my sandwich, which we were looking forward to, after a long morning hike.
