I definitely wouldn't rave about the food or anything, but it is hard to go wrong with a toasted chicken sandwich smothered in cheese with a pickle on top. The chips were probably just out of some bag, but they weren't bad either. Obviously nothing crazy. Stopped here for a quick bite on our way into town. Very casual with a couple tables inside and then some tables and picnic tables for outdoor dining. You order at the window and they bring your food to your table. Quite a big menu but we stuck to the sandwiches and wraps since it was lunch. A friend and I stopped into this place to enjoy an informal dinner at a place that had outdoor tables in the shade (at the time of day we visited). The menu is large with a wide variety of items from burgers and sandwiches, to pasta, pizza, salads, and wraps with Mediterranean flair, so there's something for everyone here, even a kids menu. Order at the counter, seat yourself, your food will be brought to you. We were there on a Friday night in July around 730pm and it was not busy at all on a (HOT) summer evening. I ordered the gyro and it was delicious, especially the bread - I cant describe it but it was slightly sweet, soft and spongy, maybe like Olga's bread?! My friend ordered the chick pea salad which was very colorful and had lovely presentation. The side of pita served with hummus is a different pita bread than the wrap, it was still very good - the bread came out hot and fresh. The gal at the counter was very friendly and gave us honest feedback about the menu. They also have a full espresso bar and gelato. I'm always a little disappointed when I dine in somwehere and a restaurant uses disposable serviceware, as was the case here. read more

The affogato with vanilla bean was phenomenal! The espresso was perfect and not just coffee poured over the ice cream. My daughter ordered the mango sorbet and it tasted exactly like a fresh mango. This is the only ice cream spot we will frequent here! read more

I had the falafel wrap with/chips. Amazing! So fresh and light yet filling and satisfying. The hubs had the recommended Ontario Chicken panini. He loved it! Not a huge sandwich but perfect to save room for dessert. Outdoor dining is available but we opted to eat inside out of the heat. Dining room is smallish, comfortable and clean. For the area, this is probably the best place if you're on a budget and want a decent amount of food. Every other restaurant in this tourist area of Saugatuck is extremely expensive and crowded. I found this place to have many menu options (which can be a con to those who are indecisive) that were decently priced and didn't break my bank. We loved Fresh Basil! We were in Saugatuck for about 4 days and ate at Fresh Basil twice. We loved the service which was friendly, able to make customizations, and pretty quick! While the place may not have had AmBiAnCe it was exactly what we were looking for-- a cute cafe with outdoor seating; it also had a nice view of the strip and some pretty trees to shade you. I got the lobster roll both times and would go back for a third with no remorse. Our group also tried the gyro wrap and some salad options. Only set back was their side options were chips or spinach (no dressing). I really, really hate when chips are the side option. Just don't. My friend will be back in Michigan in July & she's been to the same rental for 25 years. She's never eaten at Fresh Basil because there are lots of dining options but now she's excited to take her family there and make a new tradition! read more

High quality ingredients and very attentive staff. Much of Saugatuck casual restaurants seems right off the Sysco (food distributor) truck, served by those doing you big favor. That is not the case at Fresh Basil. My wife had a falafel dish that I sampled. More tender deep fry than usual but nice. Not a place to come for, for the ambience. More of a whole in the wall type place. Their menu is quite large so I was skeptical on how the food would taste. Was pretty impressed, I came with my family we were a group of 12. They were nice enough to arrange the tables for us so we could all sit together.
