Stopped in this past weekend to pick up a few treats, as I was in the area. The service was great and I was greeted by the friendly staff. There wasn't a big selection of goods, but this may be due to stopping in at 11am on a Saturday--not sure. Anyhow, I ordered two strawberry cupcakes, a chocolate chunk cookie with sea salt and one banana pudding. Once I arrived home, I noticed I had received a bread pudding instead, but I will eat any baked good placed in front of me, so no worries. Ok, now for the judgement: Chocolate Chunk Cookie with Sea Salt: 6/10. The sea salt adds a great contrast to the cookie & I wish there was more salt in the cookie dough rather than just sprinkled on top. Strawberry Cupcake: 4/10. Not very moist and a slight strawberry taste within the cake. The icing was stellar, however. Bread Pudding: 8/10. Pretty darn good! Great texture and moist in the middle. The caramel syrup that accompanies this treat is a perfect pairing. I may have not intentionally ordered this, but this was a great mistake. I visited this place a couple of years ago and thought that it was okay. I remember going for a turtle cheesecake, which is what I wanted today but the server explained that it's a seasonal item. Which, was no problem. So, I tried the toffee bread pudding and the butter pecan cake. AND let me just say, *chef's kiss* because I don't even like bread pudding but this toffee one was soooo delicious. I definitely would try it again. I'm a fan of butter pecan and cakes with nuts in them so I already knew just as long as icing was great and the cake moist that I would like it. They did not miss on these recipes. The chocolate cake was a little denser than a usual sponge, and the frosting had a little nuttiness to it, but was overall delicious. Presentation, design was top notch. 5 stars for the banana pudding no doubt and amazing staff but ... 3 stars for the cake slice. The one on display today was a classic chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream - nothing exotic but sometimes the preferred is the tell-told tried and tested. However, it fell a little flat - except the bottom layer which was hill-shaped at the sides (uneven bake or carving?) no pun intended. It needed more than just cake layers and buttercream and wished it was better sliced. Since I got it to-go, I checked the box before leaving and asked if it was supposed to look like that. Apparently so? I can understand that it may be inconvenient to replace a slice if the one served is broken but was disappointed in the response even after pointing to my broken slice. I stopped by to pick up some items for our sweet tooth last week. We couldn't go inside but they had their bakery items on display in the window. It looked very cozy and homey inside and they did a good job of limiting contact as much as possible. We got the plain and chocolate chip bread puddings and one slice of Neapolitan cake. And they were all delicious! We heated up the bread puddings by microwave as recommended and it was perfect warm and gooey. We surprisingly liked the plain one more than the chocolate chip ones. The cake was moist and flavorful. I recommend eating it all day of because the icing and cake became hard the next day. I ordered a cake from here for my friend's birthday - a cookies & cream cake with nutella frosting. I had high expectations because the cakes all looked so pretty and delicious! It was true - the cake delivered was definitely beautiful, but I felt the flavor fell a little flat. I was excited for this cake because I hadn't found other cake bakeries in Houston that could make a nutella and cookie and cream cake, which are my friend's (and my!) favorite flavors. They are both very distinct as well and really can add a lot to a cake. The cake we got from Red Dessert Dive honestly kind of tasted just like 1 flavor - and that flavor is SWEET. It just tasted like straight sugar. I could barely taste nutella - only if I really knew what I was looking for. The cookies and cream was baked in the cake layers, but still very hard to even notice. They all thought it was just a light chocolate cake or something. I had expected the outside and cake to the cookies and cream with nutella frosting the middle, but it was just cookies and cream cake with nutella frosting all over - I wish there was a way to communicate with them that that's what we wanted (and paid extra for) but the order form is pretty straight forward and didn't elaborate. Overall, giving a 3 star because sure the cake was good (cake is cake) AND it was very nicely decorated and a beautiful cake, but it did not taste like the flavors were paid extra for - it just tasted like straight sugar. I LOVE Red Dessert Dive! This is probably one of my most frequented dessert shops. They have amazing baked goods, and I have enjoyed everything that I've ordered here. I particularly love their strawberry cupcakes -- its a nice moist, vanilla base that's more cake like with the most delectable strawberry frosting. I also love their chocolate chip w/ sea salt cookies. They are HUGE cookies, and when heated up, the chocolate melts and makes for a great experience. I came here on a Friday night with my boyfriend, wanting a hot drink and dessert. I'm not sure of the parking situation, but we luckily found parking right in front. They had different flavors you can add to your hot chocolate or lattes. I opted for a regular hot chocolate, while my boyfriend ordered a hazelnut hot chocolate. Both the hot chocolates were pretty frothy but not mind blowing. It was not really tasty or flavorful, but more on the bland side. It was difficult to even taste the hazelnut, though I could smell it. We also ordered the "debusker," which is a brownie and a cookie, kind of like a brookie or slutty brownie. It was pretty good overall, the brownie was very rich. However, I prefer a more even brownie to cookie ratio, where in the debusker it was more brownie than cookie. The atmosphere was very nice, dim lights at night but enough light to see clearly. It was also warm inside, which is something I really notice in Houston businesses, as most places blast the AC even in cold weather (which I hate). There are a couple of tables to sit at and some bar chairs, so finding seating can be a challenge at times. The music playing was not too loud so you can have a normal conversation without yelling at each other. Overall, the hot chocolate was okay, I would like to try the coffee next time.
