The oatmeal cookie had a nice balance of just a bit of saltiness with an almost honey or caramelized taste when biting into the valrhona chocolate pieces-- very moreish :D - Chocolate bourbon pecan tart (4/5): more pecan-forward than chocolatey, and it was chock full of nuts. MT enjoyed this one as it wasn't too sweet. I was glad it didn't taste like or have the texture of pecan pie but would enjoy it more if it had more chocolate flavor, maybe with a thick layer of chocolate ganache. It was quiet on a weekday morning with plenty of parking in their lot. Inside, there were two tables and self serve water (yes!). The two staff members inside were friendly, and our visit just seemed very wholesome :) After our visit, I went to read more about the business on their website-- really neat to learn about the owner's journey and realized she was one of the people working in the kitchen that day! The pastrami and mustard inside were great, but honestly... I just wanted the croissant. That said, it was a bit pricey. I would absolutely love if they sold plain croissants regularly because the pastry alone is worth the trip. It's a small bakery with limited seating inside and outside, and on Saturdays things sell out fast so get there early and expect a line.

While sitting inside, I saw a man who appeared to be experiencing homelessness politely ask a customer outside if they would buy him something to eat because he was hungry. The customer said no, and the man walked away. I didn't witness any harassment or confrontation. I decided to offer to buy him something myself. He said yes, so I went inside and ordered him a croissant and water. The employee at the register initially told me they weren't supposed to sell food if it was being purchased for someone experiencing homelessness. After I explained that I had already offered, she agreed to process the purchase "this time." After I gave him the food, the owner Frédérick Fortin approached me. He told me that this man had been coming around for several days and was "harassing customers" by asking them for food. He explained that it was frustrating from a business perspective because customers come and go and when they do this he is left to deal with the situation!!!! I told him I understood his concern, but what I personally witnessed was someone politely asking one person for food, being told no, and walking away. I made my own choice to help him. What I found most upsetting was being made to feel that I had done something wrong by purchasing something with my own money and choosing to give it to someone else. Once I purchase something, I should be able to decide what I do with it! I also explained that I had come to this shop because it was highly recommended to me. When I expressed my disappointment, the owner's response was essentially that if I didn't like his business, I didn't have to be there. So I left!!! I believe businesses can have boundaries while still treating people with empathy, respect, and kindness. Those are values I personally choose to support, and a business that doesn't reflect them is a business I'm not interested in supporting! Deff not coming back!!!
