DO NOT go here to get food. I used to love this place until last week when I ordered a to go order. I ordered the chicken pad thai to go and half way through eating my meal noticed a giant dead cooked COCKROACH!!!! SO DISGUSTING. My friend was also eating here yesterday and saw the same exact cockroach crawling on the counter. I also heard they keep the salad in buckets on the floor and the meat in the sinks. This place is so unsanitary and I will never eat here ever again. DO NOT GO HERE TO GET FOOD. The food (that I've tried so far) has been great and always tasted good. The portions are pretty big and fill you up, and the prices are fair. However, after the cockroach incident that went around Facebook I've been skeptical coming here and always find myself a bit scared to find some bug in my food. read more

The service is well, what you'd expect from a college town. A bunch of 20 year olds that hate their job and hate their lives. My boyfriend and I went here expecting at least a tolerable experience after hearing all of the hype about Red Bento from our peers... Unfortunately it was one of the most painful dining experiences of our lives. And don't get me wrong, I've worked in food service. I'm normally more patient than most when it comes to dining out. It took us twenty minutes to be seated when there were not only plenty of empty tables, but none were reserved and the waiter seemed to be relaxing towards the rear of the restaurant. After we were seated, it took another half hour for the waiter to remember to come take our order. It's important to remember here - the restaurant was near empty. It wasn't busy. They just seemed to genuinely not care that there was anyone in the restaurant. When we finally got our food, my pot stickers had a taste of CINNAMON in them. Heads up to people who don't commonly eat pot stickers: Cinnamon is not a flavor you should ever find in them. Also, my boyfriend's dish was supposed to be spicy and didn't have the slightest tinge of spice. It was the first time I've ever wanted to up and leave in a dining experience and no amount of trying to excuse the poor service amounted to a decent explanation as to why it was such an atrocious experience. Save your money and your time and go to one of the other 3+ asian (Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese) restaurants in town. They'll actually seem grateful that you're there instead of treating you horribly. read more

I've been a fan of the Red Bento in Moscow for a couple of years so when i heard they were opening one in Pullman, i was excited. However, after reading these reviews, i was a bit afraid to try it. I went ahead anyway and i must say, i was very pleased. The atmosphere is a definite improvement over the Moscow location. My gf and i went during lunch and though it seemed a little busy, we had no problems. It's the same great food we have enjoyed in Moscow and for the same cheap prices. Our server was pleasant and helpful. She took our order quickly and we had our food in no time. The sushi actually came out before our hot food! That sushi chef they have (the same one that worked in Moscow i'm pretty sure) is amazing and amazingly fast. If i had to make any criticism it would be the somewhat confusing layout of the restaurant. We weren't sure what to do when we first walked in so we just kind of stood there awkwardly until a lady came and sat us at a table. Also, we had great service from a great girl but a few tables over there were some pretty unhappy people being served by a nervous young man. Maybe he's new, i don't know. We will definitely be back and we're so happy that one of our favorite restaurants is now in Pullman. read more

I've been to the Red Bento in Moscow and the one in Pullman. I have to say, I thought the service in Pullman was much better. We were served promptly, attentively, and unobtrusively. Didn't experience anything the other reviewers did. The only reason I wouldn't give it five stars is that I found the giant flatscreens distracting. It's not a sports bar, so it really clashes and is annoying. The food is terrific and the prices very reasonable. The sushi is surprisingly incredible for being in Pullman, WA. I loved my calamari sushi. Lots of vegetarian and non-sushi options as well. Even my non-adventurous/non-seafood-loving friends love Red Bento. The plating was so beautifully done my date took a picture of it to post to his G+. read more

I stopped here on a Wednesday afternoon with co-workers and the service was fairly slow. On top of that they forgot our order of edamame, which was delivered after our entrees. The food was okay. The menu looks very extensive so I played it a bit safe with chicken katsu. For Pullman, it is a good option but don't go here if you are in a rush or have somewhere to be after. read more

I was reasonably pleased with my first visit to Red Bento. The quality of the nigiri was acceptably good, though not quite to the level of Tokyo Seoul, in my opinion. Rolls were delicious, from the basic California to the more deluxe offerings. Perhaps the most pleasant part is that the chef is very generous and threw some extra nigiri on our fairly sizable a la carte order -- and, let's face it, sushi is a luxury and when you're ordering a la carte nigiri the bill adds up quickly, so giving extras on the house is awesome. I've been going to this restaurant about once a month since it opened, and I've decided that tradition is at an end after my last visit. It is really a coin flip whether or not you're going to get good food here, but that wasn't always the case. They used to have consistently excellent food and really inconsistent service, but now the opposite is true. The good: The staff is friendly and engaging, and I have absolutely no complaints about them. The sushi menu is relatively inexpensive and I've never had a bad item off of it. We even went omakasi once and what came out was delicious. The sashimi sampler particularly goes well with some hot saki, and for the most part, the appetizers are great. My favorite is the heart attack, with is like an Asian chile relleno. The bad: The entrees come out either excellent, or inedible, and lately, it is usually the latter. There are a lot of simple mistakes made. Ordering for pick up is especially problematic, as I've carried home boxes of teriyaki chicken with no teriyaki sauce on them, and specific instructions regarding food allergies have gone completely ignored. Avoid the beef teriyaki. It is cooked so far ahead, it often comes to the table room temperature - that is to say, cold. The bulgogi is no better - it is the same meat with no sauce or seasoning. Elastic and flavorless with a smell like a dirty pan, you might as well be eating cheap liver. The bowls the complimentary miso soup come in are poorly washed and often taste of dish soap. Anything fried, like the items on the new Chinese menu or the egg roll appetizer, typically comes out under cooked, rubbery, chewy and still covered in oil underneath the sauce. The fruit sushi just doesn't work - sweet fruits with bland rice and salty seaweed. Incredibly imbalanced and really disturbing texture. The staff says that people typically like it, but I don't believe them. The ugly: This place is set up horribly. There is barely any room to wait for a table, and the doors let in a bad draft on colder days, which we've had a lot of lately. There are booths along one side of the restaurant, but the other 75% of the room is just open tables. That means when it gets busy, the restaurant is a dull roar of white noise. I've literally had times when I've been unable to talk to the person three feet across from me because of the sound of 50 other people all talking at once right next to us in every direction. Even if the service goes without a hitch and the food comes without any problems, that can really ruin the experience. Finally, the sushi chefs are not engaging, and there's really no incentive to sit at the sushi bar. That experience might as well not exist. The highest praise I can offer: I've never gotten sick after eating at Red Bento. What they are aiming for is noble - good, quick Japanese, Chinese and Korean style dishes in an informal sit down restaurant with a polite staff. But they really lack execution in every area, and it speaks to the management either not caring about quality or just being in too far over their head to be able to provide it. I figure I'll try it again in six months to see if anything has changed, I really hope it does. read more

Just not very good. The one in Moscow is great, despite the hole-in-the-wall appearance. My wife and I like going there. But this one must be under different management or something. It looks nicer, but the food isn't as good. I ordered General Tso's chicken the last time I went. I was the first customer in (11:00 AM), so the food shouldn't have been stale. But it was. It was like it had sat out overnight or something. It was simply bad. Chewy, not crunchy at all, tiny pieces of chicken that resemble extra bits that you wouldn't order if you had the choice, and the flavor was off, too. I don't know what the deal was, but I didn't even finish it. That was the second time I'd had a negative experience. It's not horrible, but it's really not very good. Take the extra time to go to the Moscow one. Or choose someplace else entirely. read more

Just wait till you drive back to the west side of Washington for better Asian food. It's not worth spending a lot of money on mediocre Asian food. The sushi is overpriced and the tuna most likely pre-frozen. The unagi (eel) is overpriced for overcooked eel. Their katsu is usually overcooked, too. The people preparing the sushi behind the bar were making orders for walk-ins who ordered take-out. They weren't busy during the time we went. It seems like everyone there works together to help with each others tables. It is a little awkward when you walk in though. Came in for lunch today and had the Tofu Donburi. It was loaded with flavor. Big portion served in a bowl: white rice, veggies, eggs, tofu, teriyaki sauce. The tofu was crisp and flavorful! Miso soup was good as well. Will have again. read more

The Red Bento was a very inviting casual place.They have a huge menu which includes Chinese,Japanese,Thai....and is a little confusing.Loved the shrimp sushi and the spicy tuna rolls.The waitress suggested the cold lemongrass coconut sake which was terrible but the hot sake was okay.Slow service so don't go here if you are in a hurry. read more

This is probably the restaurant that I visit most often in Pullman. They have a HUGE menu, which can be confusing. However, we have NEVER had substandard food. They seem to have fairly high turnover with wait staff, but not the back of house. Still, the service is better than Tokyo Seoul and not as pricey. The sushi is great and they have a large selection, but the service is terrible. They don't have a hostess to seat people, so you have to wait for a waiter to notice you've come in. We waited 30 minutes with the menus set aside (indicating we were ready to order) before someone took our order and it was another 30 minutes before we got our food. And it all came separately. I got a hot roll and it was cold by the time the last person got their food. The table behind us didn't even get their food. They were there for an hour before the waitress realized he never gave the kitchen their order, and when the waitress admitted as such, they decided to just leave. read more

Just okay from me... Food is def good but when the server doesn't know if something you requested was left off or not- that's just not good service. Thankfully it was... The service in Moscow was better for sure and the other is WAY less stingy on the good stuff (fish eggs/fish that's in the sushi) read more
