This review is strictly on their staff in the front of the house and has nothing to do with their food or cooks. There are too many places in Pullman that are not very welcoming when a customer enters the restaurant and or store. Red bento is one of the. It's super frustrating when a staff member that's suppose to be the hostess and welcome people, just stands there and looks at you and looks at you and says nothing. It happens way too often. Just say hi, just acknowledge the customer that has just walked in if you're too busy to help that person right away. Every single time I've gone the service has been horrible. You have to ask multiple times for items, sometimes even having to get up yourselves for the items. They continually mess up your orders. Went here for our twins 20th birthday dinner. It was recommended by their friends. WSU students. The wait staff was slow. Took forever to give our order and an even longer unbearable wait to receive our food. The almond chicken was subpar. It had more miniature corn in it than chicken. The pad Thai was average. The orange chicken was good however. The rest of our student party had sushi which they apparently enjoyed. Overall a disappointing experience. read more

ANYWAYS, this mixed Japanese, Korean, Thai, restaurant serves quite the selection of asian food: - Big menu, different choices for different asian cravings from Japanese to Thai Food - Pricing is adequate, you get quite a bit for what you pay for but the entrees aren't the best tasting "asian" items - Ordered the Pad Thai, Thai Pho, and two chicken teriyaki/california roll bento boxes - Pad Thai was very sweet even for 5 stars of spiciness (might be a tastebud thing) - Thai pho was pretty good, broth is much different from Vietnamese pho. I upgraded to a large for $1 more and it was BIG SIZE DIFFERENCE - The bento box is probably your best option if you want a melodic dance in your mouth. You got everything from sushi, edamame, and a rice dish! - The california rolls are very tiny, sushi rice was bland, crab/avocado portion was awkward... I used to really like Red Bento! They had decent sushi, but over priced. Recently I went there and ordered a spicy California roll. They served me just a plain California roll, so I let my waitress know that I ordered it spicy. She takes it, and brings it to the sushi chef. But what does he do? He just squirts sriracha on it and sends it back three seconds later. (Mind you - I had sriracha on my table. If I wanted that, I would've done it myself!) Total bullshit! At the end of the meal, I get the bill, and they CHARGED ME to squirt sriracha on my sushi, something I could have just done myself. Not coming back until they get better chefs. read more

I simply adore any type of asian food, and sushi is top-tier. I ordered the #1 Sushi Roll Combo at Red Bento, and the chef, Rayvin, (who is superb) brought me out the most exquisite, gorgeous, display of sushi that I have seen, and probably ever will see. A wooden slatted tray, raised above the table, with perfectly arranged rows of sushi. Drizzled eel sauce along the sides, with another delicious sauce in dots along it to form a pattern. A quite generous portion of pickled ginger (yum!) and a ball of wasabi. The shoyu was served in an adorable ceramic dish, and wow! The sushi was delectable! I almost finished all 22 pieces, even though I usually don't eat that much. Thank you to our sweet server, Teresa, who was so engaging, and who really impressed me with her ability to perfectly remember all of our orders, without even writing them down! Pretty decent food for a reasonable price. They have varying grades of spiciness (probably a good thing in Pullman) and I should have gotten some of the hotter grades to really work for me. But the staff was pleasant, the place was clean and quirky, and I really liked the huge sushi boat they delivered the sashimi on. read more

So far every time I have gone here, I thought the food was great! The service was nice and I would always go for their lunch specials. The price is very reasonable and it may seem expensive but keep in mind you are paying for sushi! To be set at a college town I think they did a great job. Apparently this is one of my sons favorite places in Pullman. I was a little leery of the Chinese, Thai, Japanese dishes all on one menu. Can a place really pull it all off? Well I'm not sure I can answer that based on my one experience. However, I was pleasantly surprised. We arrived pretty early and weren't really hungry so we ordered some rolls to enjoy at the restaurant and ordered a few entrees to go. I've eaten at the Pullman location twice the over the past 2 months and it's been great-yesterday's lunch was probably one of the best meals I've eaten in Pullman! Ordered the cashew nut vegetable dish with tofu that comes with white rice(can't remember the exact name of the item on the menu but I know it said cashew nut-and it was spicy). I recently moved from Moscow ID, to Denver after living in Moscow for 4 and a half years. One of the best things about living in downtown Moscow was the fact that I lived less than a block away from Red Bento. The service is always good and the food is truly excellent. Having just moved to Denver I am extremely dissapointed in the sushi and teriyaki when I attempt to find options that could compete with Red Bento. I have also tried the Red Bento in Pullman and the food was great there too, I personally didnt have an issue with the service but I hear recently that its gotten slow, probably has to do with new employees as is the norm for college towns, people need to chill out as the service will get better and the food is and has always been, excellent. I would suggest the Midnight Train Roll and the 007 roll to those who are curious about what is phenomenal there, also the Beef Teriyaki is the best I have had. Tokyo Seoul is a good secondary option but also doesn't come close to the excellent food that you can get at Red Bento.. I will sorely miss that restaurant! read more

I have been here a few Times. I would give the food a 4/5 rating the restaurant has typically been dirty starting from the outside working its way in. I heard that they are moving to the mall at a new location, hopefully this will be a new start and a good clean restaurant, and they keep it this way. read more

My wife and I (along with our two picky kids) have gone in there twice and it has been great. Great service...great food...great prices. We ordered the chicken+cali roll bento...chicken+beef combo & shrimp tempura roll and it was a lot of food! My wife enjoyed her sushi and my boys wouldn't stop eating their food. Just visiting for a baseball tourney, and was craving some sashimi and Korean food. We were not expecting much since Asian restaurants in small towns like Pullman are meh; however, the sashimi (Samurai - 15 pcs of sashimi w/ 3 pcs of 5 different fish) was actually not bad and the Bibimbap was actually better than some Korean restaurants in the Seattle area where we're from. Next time I will try another Korean dish just to see if the Korean food is authentic / good like their bibimbap. I am vegan. I called to make a pick-up order. I told them I was vegan and that I did not want any animal products in my food. I went through the painstaking ordering process to get rid of eel sauce, yami sauce (mayo), and of course the fish in the sushi. When I went to pick up my order, I was reassured by two employees that my order was made with these modifications. I trusted them. Big mistake. My girlfriend (also vegan) bit right into the sushi and actually ate one. So, she ate fish. She was upset. So was I. That's more than leaving on the pickles on when I ask for no pickles. Beyond this, I was later informed by a manager after complaining that the tempera is also not vegan. Something I had been consistently assured was and have ordered in the past. It has egg in it. What's more, the pad thai I ordered alongside the sushi was bland. I have had good pad thai. This was inedible, which was a good thing since the only way the manager would give me my money back was if I brought back all the food. So rude. I had to call them twice to get them to refund me and I did not even receive a sincere apology. By the way, don't serve brown limes. If your employees don't know what's in the food, you need to have a readily offered ingredient list so that I can scour over it. This would make ordering easier for everyone. Do you think I like being such a pain in the ass? It's not my fault no one caters to vegans. Anyhow, I'm never going to eat there again. (Service is usually fine. Rarely stellar.) read more

The food can be good, but it's the servers that are the biggest issue, and that can ruin your experience. It's always a hit or miss with this place. Some times you'll get that one server who is on top of everything, other times you'll find yourself being ignored, having to grab your own menu and find a seat. Good quality sake and a Thai selection, but presentation is VERY lacking. My mother is a travel agent, and I've had the privilege of eating at many different restaurants when traveling with her, especially those serving Asian cuisine, and this one was hyped up by all the locals and other businesses around. This last visit was the worst and enough to make me not miss this location when I'm gone. I was ignored, had to grab my own menu, find my own seat (despite the large sign saying wait to be seated). I was asking about the quality selection of sake, but the woman knew nothing about any of them. She gave me taste test of them without carding me (thankfully I'm over 21 for their sake), and when I asked for a traditional Japanese sake set to serve the sake in, she brought me out a glass instead (sake is meant to be taken in shots). This ruined the atmosphere for me, as that is part of the immersion experience. I got a very blahzey attitude from her, and she seemed impatient to take my order (2pm on a Wednesday is not busy at all). I wanted to spend money on a good meal and purchase a bottle of good sake, yet this woman had no clue or simply did not care. The food was good and the presentation lovely (the chefs always do a great job). I love the bento boxes and bibimbap, this time settling for an expensive bento. The server was in a hurry to drop off the food and leave though. The food is not cheap respectively; a bento box can reach up to $20-$25 depending on what you want, and the cheapest meal is $10 respectively. The dumplings were way too crunchy for my taste (if you have sensitive teeth request boiled dumplings and be specific). The tempura however was on point - delicious, crunchy, and soft in the middle. The rice was just right, too, not being too soft or sticky yet not undercooked. The miso tends to be too salty with too much miso, and no spoons are provided so you must drink from the bowl. The spicy beef was my favorite - just the right amount of spice and full of flavor, but not tough. The sushi was very disappointing. I ordered the spicy salmon and the kamikaze and was surprised by the quality of it. The fish tasted warm in the spicy salmon and there was not enough of the spicy sauce. It was essentially a California roll with some salmon and a drop of sauce. I ended up sending it back as it was too much to stomach and I worried I might get sick from it (salmon had a weird taste in top The kamikaze was bland and tasted over fried, with the rice tasting way overcooked. The sake was probably the best part as it is a good quality brand, and the coconut sake goes down smooth. There are great places to eat at in Pullman, WA, but this place is not one of them. read more
