Came in tonight with my aunt and uncle, after they told me this place was amazing. Well, sadly it seems it has gone downhill since they were last here. I'm from California, so some things in Washington and Idaho are new to me. Like for instance, our server handing us water bottles instead of cups of water. Turns out I guess Moscow is known for having issues with water. Our miso soup had no additives. No tofu, or seaweed. Just broth. Our sushi chef also forgot one of my rolls, and forgot to give my aunt her yakisoba, so we had to ask for them. There was only one other table of 2 seated while we were dining, so I can't even blame a busy dining room as the reason why the staff was flustered. On the plus side, our server did bring my baby cousin a tiny serving of miso soup, so my aunt didn't "have" to share hers, and brought a spoon for the baby, so that was a nice touch. All in all, this tourist definitely will not be eating here again. read more

Now, they were out of chicken katsu and udon soup but we got plenty of chicken teriyaki and I got the ex girlfriend or something roll - and the playful roll and they were delish. We asked for the fried one not to be fried. The Philly wasn't great so we didn't eat that one but that's just because of the Smokey flavor. I love that they brought it all out on a sushi boat! I walked in here craving an avocado roll and I walked out unsatisfied still craving an avocado roll. I do not understand how this place can claim that they know how to make sushi. This is my second time I have ordered a very simple avocado roll from this place and they still do not understand anything. Too much rice and no avocado. It was so chewy and hard to eat. Extremely disappointing experience at Red Bento in Moscow. We waited far too long just to be seated, even though the restaurant wasn't busy--only four other tables were occupied and they already had their food. After finally being seated, it took another eternity just to get our drink orders taken. When we asked for boba, the server flat-out refused, saying it was too time-consuming for her to make since she was the only one working the floor. I get being short-staffed, but if you're going to advertise boba on your menu, you should be prepared to serve it--especially when the place isn't slammed. What made this worse is that the night before, we had a male server who was great--he checked on us regularly, made sure everything was good, and was clearly making the effort even with multiple tables. The contrast between the two nights was huge. The next night, the server barely acknowledged us after taking our order and gave off the vibe that we were an inconvenience. In no way do I want this to negatively impact the server we had the night before, as I said he was amazing. When we asked for boba from him, he gave us his personal opinion and even promised that the tapioca pearls were freshly made. The food was also very delicious for both nights, just a night and day difference with our customer service satisfaction between the two. Honestly a good place to eat, just could use more organization and time management skills when it comes to hiring staff. read more

Okay, so I have been sitting on this review for weeks now because I'm not usually one to complain about restaurants because I know how they can be sometimes. But my mother and I walked in, having eaten at Red Bento before, we were very excited since we don't indulge in sushi often. Now, in this review it is important to note that when we went in, it was noon on a Friday and they weren't that busy, there were MAYBE three to four tables taken. We stood for almost ten minutes waiting to be seated, and while that was a long time, we are pretty reasonable people and decided to eat anyways. We sat down and began looking through the menus. The first thing we noticed is that the seats were so uncomfortable that we couldn't even enjoy just sitting down and taking a rest from our already long day. We ordered quite quickly which was nice and the server was polite. While we were seeing the man making rolls, had no idea what they were for considering we never saw them leave the kitchen, I ordered a sprite and waited forty-five minutes just for that. We had finished our food before I had even gotten my sprite. And I'm all for saving money and doing things that are cost efficient but serving your paying customers bottled water that is still IN the bottle just seems tacky. It seemed so dirty in there I almost just didn't eat the food because if it's that messy in the dining room, I have no idea about the kitchen. There were robots and while my mom and I are very into change and innovation in the world, they added nothing but a lack person to person contact which made us just want to leave. My mom and I were talking in the car and decided that we are never going back. We used to love Red Bento! We eat sushi a LOT, and were utterly disappointed with our first experience here at Red Bento in Moscow, ID. Gyozo pork dumplings were dried out, lukewarm and stale. The spicy tuna roll was so spicy hot, even my husband, who loves spicy food, couldn't eat it. There was excessive rice & very little fish, even in the signature King Kong roll. When we politely mentioned these things to our server, his response was never an apology, but rather how unusual it was that we would complain because everyone else seemed to love the rolls & dumplings. I have been sitting on this review because I don't want it to negatively impact our server, because he was nice and he tried to make it right and almost succeeded. My wife and l came in over this last weekend. We both ordered the stir fried ramen with chicken. Nowhere on the menu mentions that the dish is spicy. Not a little spicy, but VERY spicy. I also wasn't mentioned by the server. So when the meals arrived we took one bite and couldn't eat it. We were told that the owner would not let him comp the meal but we were given a discount for the food. We then had to order new dishes. If that had been it I might not have written this review. However. About 20 minutes later the new dishes come out. My wife got a bento and I ordered the chicken katsu. My chicken was so overcooked it was like trying to eat finished leather. I had to tear it like jerky and the flavor was abhorrent. There also was hardly any katsu sauce and the rice wasn't fully cooked. We could have looked over the misleading menu, but when I got home l ended up just having to throw away the second order as well. Even with a discount it was almost $100.00 for what should have been a $40.00 meal. It was a completely wasted trip. I remember Red Bento from over a decade ago and how amazing they used to be. I had hoped that the rumors of the massive decline of this location were just that. Rumors. I likely will not be bringing my business back here in the future. read more

Came here around 12pm on Thursday, 10/07/11, to order a takeout. The service was good and quick, and the food was okay. If I was impressed by something , I like how neatly packed the sushi were for the take out and how the sushi looked neatly assembled. Now, the sushi rice for me needs seasoning and fish doesn't taste as fresh. As much as I wanna critic the raw fish, I understand that we aren't near the coast and with the supply chain issues it would affect the quality, so I'm not focusing on it too much. I wasn't really fond of the cream cheese on the Philly roll, so the cream cheese used could be better. The Alaskan roll and the Philly roll really need to look different from each other and have some uniqueness to it. The Alaskan roll looks boring. read more

Brief tutorial for the cooks at this Red Bento: Put uncooked rice into a cambro or a measuring cup. Hold your open hand palm side up over your rice cooker and slowly pour the rice over your hand to visually inspect for rock and other debris. When the rice is cooked, use a utensil to fluff it and visually inspect it again for undesired foreign objects. Then, later when you are measuring and handling rice to roll sushi, inspect it a third time in case it picked up any stray debris from your block or station. Technically when you plate or package a meal there is a fourth opportunity to inspect the food, too. So, yeah. Had a fairly large rock in my sushi today--not a boulder but it was larger than the rice grain and it was pitch black. I was already aware that debris can be present in grains and legumes sometimes but the staff did make an effort to re-explain this to me. Either way I have a cracked tooth. They did refund the cost of the item and the cashier apologized... Thanks for that, I guess. On a side note completely unrelated to this experience, a while back we also had a server here ask us if my s/o was my mom. Kinda harshed our anniversary date but obviously didn't stop us from coming back because the food was good enough. The food wasn't exactly bad on this trip (sore mouth definitely ruined my appetite and I was only a few bites in) but quality and size was noticeably smaller--I understand supplies are difficult and I wouldn't have mentioned it under different circumstances. We were in Moscow for my daughters basket ball game and needed a good place for dinner so I turned to my trusty Yelp to find a place. Red Bento seemed to have decent ratings so we figured it was worth a try. We were so disappointed. First off Parking sucks and there were a bunch of employees outside smoking, we should have left then. Once inside we stood at the door for about 5 min waiting to be seated and let me be clear the place was not busy. Once we were seated it was another 5 min and no one had even given us menus so my younger son went to grab them I figured someone would be over after that but no it took another 5-10 min for someone to come get our drink order. If it wasn't so late and if my kids weren't so hungry I would have left because I was so angry. Food wise it wasn't much better we had the chicken teriyaki which was dry and not very good the miso soup was gross and salty and the sushi was mediocre at best. The only reason this place is getting 2 stars is because the gentleman making sushi was so kind to my two youngest kids that were watching him and he gave them some sushi and it made their night. I'm the first to understand the challenges around the supply chain and finding good workers. However, I was put off by a few things when I called to order take out. One, the restaurant is charging extra for spice level. Two, they don't have peanuts available for the pad thai dish. Aren't peanuts part of the dish? If you can't make the dish they way it should be due to the supply chain, why offer it? Take it off the menu and focus on what you are good at. As I was ordering, I realized I wasn't going to get the food the way I wanted and was going to pay extra. So, I opted to cancel the order. The staff member literally hung up on me. I have ordered from this place for years. I had great experiences at the old location. The mall location, not so much. It always seems like there's confusion about who is going to help you depending on which door you walk in, if they notice. Tried the new location in Palouse Mall today. I never liked the Pullman location, but since this location is new, I thought I'd give them another chance and maybe they've gotten better. It's been about 4+ years since I've eaten at Red Bento. Cons: Their menu is all over the place with different Asian cruisine selections with no real speciality, therefore their food lack taste and authenticity. This goes for all the red bentos. Today, We ordered some bentos and sushi rolls. Our tempura shrimp in our rattlesnake roll tasted stale, and was thick with batter and very hard to chew. They also added so much rice in all of our rolls that it just didnt taste good. It was just too chewy with mainly rice. The miso soup had nothing in it but miso paste and water. The sushi overall was not great. We were very disappointed. Service was lacking. They hardly came by and checked on our water or if we needed anything. Pros: the salmon and chicken Teriyaki weren't too bad. Salmon was cooked well. The kids liked it. I also liked the salad dressing. They did an ok job on the remodel, and it looked better than the old China Buffet. Nothing with a "wow" factor though. Overall, we weren't impressed, and will probably not return, unfortunately. This place really lacks on atmosphere. It's pretty grubby around the edges and the back hallway is definitely not a welcoming entrance. I had the bento box. It was pretty average and while it didn't stand out, it wasn't bad. The best part was the teriyaki chicken. The sushi was on par with grocery store sushi, so I'd skip it if I ever came back. Then after 40 minutes of waiting we finally got our food, and that's the second time we saw our waiter and only time until we got the bill. We asked for extra plates and utensils and not once did we get a water refill. The people working looked like they were just walking around in circles not doing their job. I swear I made eye contact with the waiter ten times and he never came to our table. Didn't even tip it was just so bad. And the sushi we had was sooo expensive for how low quality the rolls were. I've been to Red Bento twice. The first time the Salmon roll I ordered smelled off. When I took a bite I had to spit it out because it should not have been served. The second time the Shrimp tasted freezer burned and the oil used to fry the tempura was old. All I could taste was old oil when I bite into the shrimp. Didn't eat it. Think twice before eating at this place. Is there a health board to do an inspection. Please regulate this place or close 'em down until they are up to code. read more

NYE- 2010 Everyone celebrating with us had a great time. We enjoyed vegetarian yakisoba with fried Tofu. The veg's said it was great. Hubby had a huge Spicy Teriyaki Beef bento platter and came away satisfied and STUFFED!!! My friend and I shared a wide variety of fresh tasty rolls that I have to say were served in a very timely manner. I'm really impressed that their service has improved so dramatically. We were prepared for a 2 hr dinner excursion but were in and out in about an hour. Also consumed: Miso, Edamame, pear sake, hot sake, Sake bombs, gyoza, california roll, tuna rolls, red snapper, tempura shrimp, salmon rolls, salmon roe, flying fish egg and fried tofu. This is more like 3 and a half stars. But, I really like the new location at the mall. Very spacious and clean. The food was delicious and the service was pleasant. Considering they just opened at their new location it was crowded for lunch, which probably contributed to the slow service. I have enjoyed Red Bento since they were in a different location. The new restaurant is in the Palouse Mall and it is nice, inside and out. Spacious seating area and cool signage out front. The menu choices are so broad-Thai, Chinese, sushi and other Asian fusion dishes. I usually get the Teriyaki chicken, but I also love their fried rice. If you like bento-try the ginger wasabi dressing on your salad. Delicious! My wife loves the 007 Roll and the Golden Gate roll. Try it for yourself! You won't be disappointed. This was the first time Since 2015 that I've been here, and I was so excited to experience their new location. Sadly I was so disappointed. We went in for lunch around 2, the place was empty only 2 other tables. I order the miso soup, Playgirl and Boston roll. My cousin ordered the Playboy and Las Vegas roll. I'm use to miso soup having tofu and green onions, this one only had a chuck of seaweed with a lackluster flavor of miso. Now when our server brought out our sushi we noticed they had mixed up our playgirl/boy rolls on our plates, so we asked to make sure. (Hers was Tuna which is darker and mine Salmon is lighter with white fat lines). He said that they had plated them correctly but we knew what tuna and salmon were suppose to look like so we kept insisting that he check. Because if that's what their salmon was looking like, there was NO way I was eating it! But thankfully they plated them wrong and thankfully me and my cousin know fish enough to be able to point it out. Overall the rolls were average. The fish was actually very tender and buttery but lacked any sort of flavor which was a huge disappointment. As my cousin started to eat her Vegas roll she noticed something abnormally dark where the fish was, she pulled it apart and it was a ball of fish skin. I would have understood such a mistake if the place was super busy but there were only two other tables, one which didn't even order sushi. This is one of our favorite places to eat when we come to Moscow they never disappoint. It's not the fanciest place by any means. I would defiantly say it has a casual atmosphere. But it's always clean and nothing is in bad shape. The waitresses are always really nice and prompt and the food always comes out in a timely manner. They did just get a new chef so if you didn't like it before maybe try it again because it did get better with the new chef. Also it's not expensive in my opinion. read more
