    The Tech Grad
    Laura P.

We chose this place because 1/2 the marriage went to Tech and the other smarter half went to Texas - just kidding. We chose this place because hubby does a lot of Longhorn stuff with me, and so when we see a Tech-themed place outside of Lubbock, we go! Actually I (the Texas grad) wish there was MORE Texh stuff here - had to look hard for it. There are plenty of Red Raiders in Central Texas, REPRESENT!! We tried the Amber ale, which like all the beers here is brewed in tiny 3-6 gal. batches. It was a very good beer, one that we would definitely get again next time we are in Johnson City. We also each had the cheeseburger and chips, which came by on a bun but in grilled panini bread. The meat was cooked through and the cheese melted well (I think on the smoker), so it had a very nice flavor. It needs some acid to cut the beefy cheesiness - a brown or Dijon mustard would have been great. There were a wide variety of beers on tap, but we were on the road for San Marcos, so didn't want to drink more than one beer. Flights looked great though - and there's a nice front porch to drink them on. This is apparently THE place to watch the Red Raiders play football on Saturdays, but the staff at the bar had no idea about what radio station to listen to the game on while watching it on TV. Tech has the Bad Boys of College Football Radio calling games, and they are by far the best college football radio broadcast team in the US (Brian Jensen, John Harris), and in my opinion, all football should be watched on TV with the sound turned down and the radio broadcast on. Google Red Raider radio network - it will change your life, I guarantee. (I tweeted Brian and John about this place, FYI). 5 Wreck 'em Tech Stars!

Cozy place to enjoy some locally brewed beer. Tim, the owner and brewmaster, is happy to tell you about his craft beers, including the Norwegian yeasts he selected for their compatibility with brewing in hot Texas weather. To keep startup costs down, he did almost all of the construction himself - check out my picture of the beer flight holders he made from lumber. Speaking of flights, I decided to try all 7 of the beers on tap. My favorites were the hazy IPA and both of the stouts. All of the selections were solid. I didn't see any food on the menu. The interior space features an L-shaped bar good for socializing, a comfy love seat, a mini pool table, and whimsical touches such as a guitar sitting in a stand, ready for someone to pick up and play. If hanging out indoors isn't your thing, there are a few outdoor tables under a ginormous oak branch. While I also love the brewery around the corner, I plan on working Reck 'Em Right into my rotation!

Always great service, fun events, and of course, the beer! Food is not too shabby either.

The owner is super personable, the location is close to the shopping that you could sit between shopping, but lots of better parking then right off main/290! Inside it's such a comfy and classy rustic style taproom! I tried the amber and it was yummy and enjoyable ! I can't wait to go by when I have more time and to hang out and feel the environment even more! Definitely think you should it out!

Went for a bday. Got to enjoy a jam session with a washtub bass. That was fun. Beers were great and the brisket sandwich hit the spot. Moose Out

I wish I lived in Johnson City so I could be a regular. We'll definitely stop when we're driving through. I loved all the Texas Tech decorations. We really enjoyed the Pilsner and the Imperial Stout....next time I'll try some other beers. The grilled cheese was perfectly done and the sausage wrap was tasty as well. I appreciated the hand sanitizer that's at every table. Extremely clean restaurant and bathrooms.

Man, if you have not tried this place, you are missing out! We were here a couple years ago and it was strictly a brewery. Outstanding beer and great people. In case you have missed it, RER now has food...and DAMN! I got the pulled pork Cubano and my wife got the Hawaiian Pulled Pork. Her sandwich was really, really good. She even said once it was gone, "I miss it already." My Cubano was a brilliant twist on a traditional Cuban, with the traditional ingredients, including pickle, ham, and mustard. The addition of their house smoke pulled pork sent it into the next level. The beer here has been excellent from day one, but with the addition of a killer menu, this is now a one-stop shop that really needs to be on your list. Summing up, phenomenal beers, next level sammys, and really great people. Why more does one need?

What a great brewery!!!! The recipes are awesome!!! Off of the 290 Main but easy to find! Didn't try the food but looked great and had positive feedback from the other customers! Stop by and have a beer! Tell Tim hello!!!

We were first told we couldn't order an appetizer because the kitchen wasn't ready, then later told we could -- but by that time we couldn't order breakfast anymore. We were hoping to enjoy both breakfast and an appetizer, so the back-and-forth was disappointing. Similarly, when my father-in-law asked for a second beer, the reaction felt bothered rather than accommodating. To top it off, our checks were incorrect. He did offer to fix them, but at that point we were ready to just pay and leave. Again, the food was truly good and the restaurant itself is beautiful. The tasting room has been open for about four months, but owner and winemaker, Gary Hahne, has been making wine for a lifetime. Gary is a Texas Hill Country Native and his family roots date back to his great grandparents who immigrated to the Stonewall area from Germany. His parents were close friends to LBJ and Lady Bird. The Hahne surname in German translates to the English word rooster, which ties to the colorful rooster found on the winery's logo. There is no tasting fee to sample the four dry wines, and one sweet Sangria style wine on the tasting menu. Each bottle of wine tells a different story of the Hahne family and the surrounding hill country. As you sip and savor the flavor of the well balanced, delicious, palatable wines. You can walk around the winery and enjoy the historic pictures of the Hahne family, and hear about the family and area history. I had the great pleasure of being able to talk with Gary himself about his amazing family heritage. I enjoyed all of the five wines. My favorite was a bold; well balanced, red blend (Tempranillo, Cab Sauv, and Nero D'Avola) entitled Texas Tapestry. I also loved the Texas styled Chianti appropriately named Texanti. This was a softer red, fruit forward, but well balanced with lingering notes. I also very much enjoyed the dry rose that is named after Gary's grandfather, Opa. The Viognier blend was also surprisingly good, with interesting peach like notes. My visit here was delightful, and I hope to return soon. Gary is passionate about making quality wine to enjoy with us, and to pass down his story to be remembered for years to come.

The castle-like architecture, expansive grounds, and overall atmosphere make it feel like a destination rather than just a brewery. In terms of size and majestic ambiance, it reminded me of Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, New York. We stopped in for lunch on a weekday and still had about a 30-minute wait for a table. Fortunately, that wasn't a problem because we were able to enjoy a beer while waiting and take in the scenery. The property is large enough that exploring it becomes part of the experience. The beer selection is heavily focused on German styles, which was perfect for me. Whether you enjoy lagers, pilsners, bocks, or wheat beers, there is something for every fan of traditional German brewing. One of the fun touches is that many of the beers are available in liter size pours, adding to the authentic beer hall experience. The food menu is inspired by classic German cuisine, but it also offers a wide variety of other options, including some more upscale dishes. This makes it easy for everyone in a group to find something they will enjoy. Everything we ordered was excellent, with generous portions and high-quality ingredients. Beyond the food and beer, the atmosphere is what really makes this place special. The combination of the castle setting, beautiful grounds, German-inspired traditions, and excellent hospitality creates an experience that feels unique and memorable. Overall, this is far more than just a brewery. It's a destination worth visiting whether you're a beer enthusiast or simply looking for a great meal in a remarkable setting.
