As a matcha lover who'd liked it before it was cool (or so she'd like to think), I was so excited to try Recess. Their ambiance is super cute and airy, with a lot of vinyls on display and to play. It was pretty busy when we got there but thankfully they had the garage doors open and outdoor seating available. It took a few minutes each way between ordering and receiving drinks which is pretty reasonable. It looks like they make the matcha itself in kind of a bigger batch so they can get a lot of drinks out right away once they finish making the pitcher. I got the So High School, which is a matcha lemonade with a hint of lavender syrup. This is a good drink if you like something more bitter/tart for a drink as opposed to a sweet drink. My boyfriend got the That Girl, which is a strawberry flavored matcha latte, and I found it to be too sweet for me. So they definitely have a good range to satisfy a lot of folks. They also have cold brew if that's more your style. I'm sure I'll be back again with the whole crew at some point! read more

I decided Mother's Day was a good time to visit for the first time, and based on the line out the door, I could tell it's popularity hadn't died down at all yet. It's a beautiful space and a beautiful neighborhood and as it happened to be a beautiful day, I couldn't have asked for anything more. The staff was very kind, the drink choices were varied enough, and the presentation is impeccable. I found it difficult to find a menu online in advance. I understand that they rotate their drinks, and I didn't want to set my heart on something that would not be available. The menu is on the counter, and fairly small print. I could only read it when I was third in line. I saw people enjoying beautiful concoctions as I waited to order, but couldn't figure out what was what. For example, the alma mater iced Matcha latte is blue! The description is Matcha with vanilla. How would I know that that's the blue drink? Just something to keep in mind. Adding Recess to my list of favorite coffee and matcha spots in Indy! I got the Molly Monkey (cold brew) and the That Girl (matcha). The service was absolutely fantastic! I was a bit nervous about how the service would be because I went around noon on a work day to grab a coffee and matcha and the line was out the door. I should not have worried at all. Their limited menu helps them be really fast and the line moved surprisingly quickly. Their limited menu also helps make ensure that everything they offer is incredible! I am not always the biggest fan of matcha, but I think that is in part to the quality of matcha at some stores. The matcha at Recess is a beautiful dark green that blends into a beautiful lighter green when mixed with the milk. I think I still may have preferred the Molly Monkey, but that is because I am partial to banana! I'll have to try the Banana Split next time. The interior is stunning, but the outdoor space is also really nice! There were people working, but also people just using the space to socialize too. I did ask a woman sitting outside with her laptop if the wifi extended to outside as I was thinking about coming back tomorrow to work outside for a bit, but she said she had to use her phone's hotspot. With just one visit I'm smitten. Service friendly. Vibes relaxed and unpretentious. Although they could boast how smooth and tasty they curate their matchas. I'm not a matcha connoisseur by any means but I've had matcha and then i had THIS matcha. Easily top 5 matcha drinks I've ever had. I really hope they offer a matcha flight one day so i can try more in one sitting. Looks like the menu changes from time to time and i was so happy that the Ube Shortbread was on menu when i visited. Finally got the chance to try Recess after discovering that I actually love matcha! I ordered the banana split iced matcha with a vegan donut, and both were absolutely delicious and packed with flavor. I'm officially obsessed. The line was a little hectic, but honestly so worth it. Cute, trendy and Indy's first matcha bar. The twenty something's are all hanging out here! Matcha is not always my thing - it's very earthy and I usually think it tastes like grass but apparently if it's done well, even the casual matcha drinker can find something they like. I ordered the "It's My Jam" off the seasonal menu. The matcha was layered with berry, milk and that beautiful green tea and topped with a lemon. The flavors were very nice. Not too sweet but very balanced. My husband also liked it (he usually likes matcha). Downsize is the hefty price tag. This drink was almost $10. I know they import their matcha and it's supposedly better quality so you are paying for that. But that means, for me, this can only be a once in a while stop because that is pretty steep for a drink. Everyone was very pleasant and nice, which created a welcoming atmosphere. My mom and I got the banana bread matcha latte and the blueberry lemon matcha! The flavors were well balance and the color was good. They close at 4:00pm & I made it around 3:45pm (I don't love being that person BUT it was now or way later lol) & despite me showing showing up right before close, they were still very friendly! This is such a cute place! The aesthetic is really chic. This is my second time having matcha and it was good! I liked it very much. I got one of their specials but was able to try the other ones from the menu since my friends all got different ones. Plus they had an Oat milk option which is a plus for lactose intolerance. I'm OBSESSED with Recess! I wasn't really a matcha girlie until I tried their drinks! Their matcha is ceremonial grade from Japan and their drinks are smooth and sweet - just the way I like them! Their rotating menu is fun and gives you something new to try every time you visit. If you're not a huge fan of matcha, they also offer a couple cold brew options which I've loved too! I'd seen the videos of the lines down the block so I knew it had to be something special, and I definitely agree with that. I was SO beyond happy when I heard a matcha bar was opening in Indy! I have been on the hunt for a delicious, quality matcha for a long time now and finally found the spot! This matcha shop is so aesthetic and extremely busy already. There was a line when I went, but it moved quickly. $7.50 for a matcha latte $8.50 for speciality matcha $7 for a hojicha latte It's definitely not cheap, but good quality matcha is expensive and they use a veryy generous amount in each drink! They have their own ceremonial grade, ground to order matcha from Uji, Kyoto that they sell tins of in store if you're wanting to make matcha at home! I got an unsweetened matcha latte to see how the matcha tasted without all the flavors and sweeteners. Recess is one of the coolest places I've been lately. I loved the set up and decor. It has a certain vibe that lands across the board. I got the who hon check me charms (Lucky Charms cereal matcha) and it tasted just like Lucky Charms just not as sweet which I wish it was slightly sweeter and more marshmallow-y but it was good! My friend got the Banana Biscoff and she loved it. Service was great and pretty quick. It was full as in every seat was taken but it wasn't crowded like I could get around with my baby in his carrier. They do have all syrups and things pre-made so when I asked for my friends to have whole milk there was a slight pushback to let me know it's all pre-made which was cool and done nicely. I ventured here with my friend on a gloomy day, and Recess was a ray of sunshine in the neighborhood. Let's start with the welcoming entrance with handpainted artwork on the brick which is ~adorable~. The menu regularly changes, which I love in terms of eating/drinking seasonally. My first review of 2026 is going to Recess and rightfully so. When I tell you I am ECSTATIC to have a matcha bar here in Indy (and one so close to my own neighborhood), I am SO happy!!! Good quality matcha is scarce here, and Recess is definitely helping to bridge that gap. Ambiance: 10/10. It's so cute inside and so thoughtfully curated. I overheard the owner talking to some guests, and she and her husband did all of the interior design themselves. I've gotta say they definitely have the eye for it! It feels so cozy inside, and all the decor and furniture just mesh together in the best way. It's also pretty sweet seeing people come together to enjoy the space. Drinks: The first time I went, I ordered the Bananagrams. There was no wait around 10am on a Friday. The matcha was so incredibly smooth and they use a generous amount of matcha for each drink. The shade of green is exactly what you want in a matcha. The banana flavor was pretty subtle, but you could tell it's not from artificial flavoring. I do wish the cloud on top was a little bit thicker, but overall a very yummy drink. It was so good that I returned the next day (LOL) and ordered the Sprinkle Cookies matcha. Omg. I was hesitant at first because sprinkles on matcha is a little "unconventional" but I think that's what makes it so fun. SPRINKLE COOKIES IS MY FAVE!!! It's insane how much it tastes like a sugar cookie without being super sweet. It took everything in me to not chug it in one go lol. I came around 11:50am on a Saturday and did end up waiting an hour so prepare yourself if you plan to come on a weekend, especially if it's cold out because you will be standing outside for a majority of your wait. (But once I took a sip I forgot about the wait... I was finally able to visit this place! They've opened recently and have had lines out the door, so I suggest coming early or on a weekday! I had the ube cloud matcha latte and my partner had the matcha latte. The matcha quality is good, very smooth. It is suitable matcha quality for lattes. I like that you can tell them how sweet you want it--most places always add a ton of sugar and you can't even taste the matcha. The inside seating area is super cute, I love all the plants and decor! My husband and I popped in to try Recess today and it deserves every ounce of hype it's receiving! They have a small parking lot and tons of street parking, which is always a plus. The baristas were about as sweet as can be! Chatting and making genuine conversation as they took orders and made drinks. I was only able to catch two of their names- Kelsey & Kaitlin. They were excellent, along with everyone working! Genuinely, the best service I've ever had at an Indy cafe (please never lose this!) My husband made the comment: "they have girl's girls working here, this is your kind of place" and I think that perfectly encapsulates the vibe! Now for the matcha... we tried the bananagram & roasted and toasted specialty drinks, iced with oat milk. I asked if they came very sweet, as I'm not a major fan of super sweet drinks and they informed me they come lightly sweet, which I love! The drinks were absolutely phenomenal! We loved both of them. As big matcha drinkers, this is by far the best matcha I've had outside of Japan. I love that they offer their matcha for purchase and will definitely be buying! Lastly, the vibe is just amazing in the shop. It is decorated so cute and cozy, I love all the records and the adorable branding! I went in the Wednesday after Easter, and nowhere on the coupon or their Facebook page did it mention that it had to be redeemed on Easter day. As a business owner of 20 years, I understand policies--but when I handed the coupon to the employee, I was met with a condescending response implying it was obvious it had to be used on Easter. That interaction was disappointing. I live in the neighborhood and hadn't visited before because the hours don't usually work for my schedule, but I was excited to finally try it. Between that experience, the ongoing double parking issues, and the apparent lack of concern for how it affects neighbors trying to safely drive down the street, I left feeling frustrated. The matcha itself tasted more like lemonade--perfectly fine, but nothing particularly special. The staff is so sweet. Have come here a handful of times now and tried different matcha recipes and haven't had one I didn't like.
