Banana matcha
Lynn N.

The specials board had about six drinks to choose from and I went with the banana matcha. It was good! No fake artificial banana taste. It was well-balanced and not too sweet. The matcha was a bit neutral for my taste, as I like a stronger earthy matcha flavor. But it's a good option for an everyday matcha drink. It's nice they have a rotating matcha drink menu and I'll be interested to see what other concoctions they come up with. The employees are super friendly. They answered my questions and checked in to make sure I was enjoying the drink. They have a nice variety of seating options and it's a comfortable place to enjoy a drink. There is street parking along neighborhood streets.

Definitely a matcha spot. It's super cute! Loved the service and the homey feel. The cold brew was ok. A little watered down but like I said this place is for matcha! So please go try them out.

My husband and I finally found our way down College to visit Recess. I just very recently tried Matcha while this was my husband's first. What I really loved about the space is the area itself. When we went, there was a group of people doing Yoga across the street, people out walking their dogs, and a full open storefront that just screamed community! We easily found parking in the small lot for customers, but there's plenty of street parking if you're good at parallel parking. We got there before any of the lines formed. I will say, I wish the menu was bigger or they had QR codes around so you can see their drink options, but also enjoyed the fact that nothing there seemed rushed or that it was a "hurry up and order and move on" kind of place. Everyone truly seemed happy to be there. As for the drinks, I had a strawberry matcha and my husband had their new bomb dot com matcha. I'm not sure either of us are matcha drinkers, so they next time we look forward to trying their cold brew options. Definitely go for the vibes, and if you love matcha you will love it!

I decided Mother's Day was a good time to visit for the first time, and based on the line out the door, I could tell it's popularity hadn't died down at all yet. It's a beautiful space and a beautiful neighborhood and as it happened to be a beautiful day, I couldn't have asked for anything more. The staff was very kind, the drink choices were varied enough, and the presentation is impeccable. I found it difficult to find a menu online in advance. I understand that they rotate their drinks, and I didn't want to set my heart on something that would not be available. The menu is on the counter, and fairly small print. I could only read it when I was third in line. I saw people enjoying beautiful concoctions as I waited to order, but couldn't figure out what was what. For example, the alma mater iced Matcha latte is blue! The description is Matcha with vanilla. How would I know that that's the blue drink? Just something to keep in mind. Enjoy a roll of the dice or ask around in advance.

With just one visit I'm smitten. Service friendly. Vibes relaxed and unpretentious. Although they could boast how smooth and tasty they curate their matchas. I'm not a matcha connoisseur by any means but I've had matcha and then i had THIS matcha. Easily top 5 matcha drinks I've ever had. I really hope they offer a matcha flight one day so i can try more in one sitting. Looks like the menu changes from time to time and i was so happy that the Ube Shortbread was on menu when i visited. It was so pretty! Dunno if my pictures could really capture how this place made me feel but i hope you get the same feel when you visit. Cheers!

As a matcha lover who'd liked it before it was cool (or so she'd like to think), I was so excited to try Recess. Their ambiance is super cute and airy, with a lot of vinyls on display and to play. It was pretty busy when we got there but thankfully they had the garage doors open and outdoor seating available. It took a few minutes each way between ordering and receiving drinks which is pretty reasonable. It looks like they make the matcha itself in kind of a bigger batch so they can get a lot of drinks out right away once they finish making the pitcher. I got the So High School, which is a matcha lemonade with a hint of lavender syrup. This is a good drink if you like something more bitter/tart for a drink as opposed to a sweet drink. My boyfriend got the That Girl, which is a strawberry flavored matcha latte, and I found it to be too sweet for me. So they definitely have a good range to satisfy a lot of folks. They also have cold brew if that's more your style. I'm sure I'll be back again with the whole crew at some point!

Adding Recess to my list of favorite coffee and matcha spots in Indy! I got the Molly Monkey (cold brew) and the That Girl (matcha). The service was absolutely fantastic! I was a bit nervous about how the service would be because I went around noon on a work day to grab a coffee and matcha and the line was out the door. I should not have worried at all. Their limited menu helps them be really fast and the line moved surprisingly quickly. Their limited menu also helps make ensure that everything they offer is incredible! I am not always the biggest fan of matcha, but I think that is in part to the quality of matcha at some stores. The matcha at Recess is a beautiful dark green that blends into a beautiful lighter green when mixed with the milk. I think I still may have preferred the Molly Monkey, but that is because I am partial to banana! I'll have to try the Banana Split next time. The interior is stunning, but the outdoor space is also really nice! There were people working, but also people just using the space to socialize too. I did ask a woman sitting outside with her laptop if the wifi extended to outside as I was thinking about coming back tomorrow to work outside for a bit, but she said she had to use her phone's hotspot. That's not a big deal at all, I am just including it as an FYI! I will have to go back soon and pick up some of their matcha!

Cute, trendy and Indy's first matcha bar. The twenty something's are all hanging out here! Matcha is not always my thing - it's very earthy and I usually think it tastes like grass but apparently if it's done well, even the casual matcha drinker can find something they like. I ordered the "It's My Jam" off the seasonal menu. The matcha was layered with berry, milk and that beautiful green tea and topped with a lemon. The flavors were very nice. Not too sweet but very balanced. My husband also liked it (he usually likes matcha). Downsize is the hefty price tag. This drink was almost $10. I know they import their matcha and it's supposedly better quality so you are paying for that. But that means, for me, this can only be a once in a while stop because that is pretty steep for a drink. Everyone was very pleasant and nice, which created a welcoming atmosphere. I'll be back, just won't be a daily stop due to the price tag on those drinks.

Super good quality matcha, and the matcha drink variety is super unique. I believe they have a rotating menu of their specials. Went in on a Friday morning and wasn't too busy, was able to find seating and get some work done. In a decent area as well, so parking isn't difficult to find.

It's so cozy in here that one of these days they might catch me setting up shop to live in the little sofa corner for a bit. How would they know? The matcha is dark green as God intended. God could theoretically be a girl and all girls know good matcha. I took time to enjoy my berry matcha. My partner slurped his banana matcha at a disrespectful speed and I think that was frankly rude. Men should learn the drink is not going anywhere and no one will hurt them for taking polite sips.

I visited with my husband a few weeks ago. I am not really a matcha drinker, but a friend of mine told me to try it any way. I ordered the one with fruity pebbles and it was quite delicious. I would be interested to try a coffee drink next time, but I did enjoy the drink. My husband had the cold brew and enjoyed it. We also split an everything goat cheese croissant which was amazing. The vibes in here are great and cute. When we got there, there wasn't a line, but one did seem to form shortly after. Ours at least did come quick. I'm definitely looking forward to coming again!

Stopped by recess while driving through Indianapolis, as I saw on TikTok that they have very good matcha! I was not disappointed! My mom and I got the banana bread matcha latte and the blueberry lemon matcha! The flavors were well balance and the color was good. I'd give the banana matcha a 7 and the blueberry lemon matcha an 8. The line was quite long on a Sunday afternoon and the line moves slowly but they make each one to order so that makes sense. Staff was friendly. We had no problem finding street parking but there is no parking lot. There is some indoor and outdoor seating!

such a ridiculously delicious matcha latte! i have to admit that i'm very picky about matcha lattes, but this one completely won me over!! no clumps of matcha powder and not overly milky at all! the cashier was really sweet and patient with me since i'm deaf... she was so kind. i also loved seeing all the cute books in the shop! so worth a visit!

Best matcha hands down. I had mine with oat milk and it was delicious. My friends got some quirky matcha which they also enjoyed.

There is space to work and many people were on laptops, but I grabbed my drink to go. You'll have to go up a set of stairs to get to the coffee shop, so be mindful of that. It's also kind of warm - they had a bunch of loud fans going. I don't know if that's just because it's summertime and the building is old and harder to cool or if they had water damage from all the rain and are drying out. It didn't bother me but noting that in case it does bother others.

FYI to those who may have a physical handicap the prevents climbing steps, there are 2 sets of steps to enter the building, I didn't see any handicap accessible entry when I went there. The area to order coffee was really small and could comfortably fit about 5 people in the line inside the ordering station. There were places to stand in the foyer to wait as well, but in my opinion even though there is an open space in the foyer you could be potentially blocking someone's walking space since the ordering station is next to the entrance and the seating areas are in the entryway. I ordered their seasonal From the Past Latte w/ matcha and whole milk. They mentioned that the wait time to receive the drink was 10 minutes, which was understandable with how busy they were, but to my surprise I actually received my drink in half that time. The drink tasted great and if I was still in the area I'd go there again. I definitely noticed for such a small space, the staff were efficient and moved quickly to get everyone their correct orders. I was only annoyed bc I was so hungry, other than that- I didn't care about the wait bc I had nowhere to be. Overall- If I was in the neighborhood and craving a yummy coff treat, I'd return- I did really like my drink.
