I am revising my review for Ray's. We went in this morning and had an amazing experience. The food was delicious, portions huge and food was hot and fresh ( always has been). The inside is nice and clean and we were greeted immediately when we arrived. We were served by Gabby and she was SUPER! Very attentive and professional and she took my father's bad dad jokes with grace and laughed it off. She had a friendly smile the entire time and didn't act rushed or put out in any way. Overall it was a great dining experience and that was much needed after just receiving life changing news. So to Gabby, thank you. You were a bright light on a dark day. We will be back. read more

I have lived in Dothan now for 4 yrs and this restaurant by far has the best breakfast. Everything was hot and fresh. Staff was friendly and quick with preparing my order. I typically search Yelp for a local place for breakfast when traveling and today, Ray's place looked like the best bet. I arrived to and found it clean, welcoming and filled with locals. I saw a bad review so it took me a while to try Ray's since moving here . the building is nothing fancy but the service was good - friendly waitress , Very good smoked ham and cheese grits . Eggs were not over cooked which happens often . The toast was ok , coffee was a little weak but I am ex-navy ( if coffee does not dissolve paint it is to weak ) . Ray's has been around in Dothan forever! How have I missed this place? I always thought it was just a breakfast place but it is more of a meat and three. There are some fascinating items of the decor to Ray's. First of all, there is a table in the middle of the small dining room called the "Table of Knowledge" and even has a sign for it. Yeah that's great and all but what excites me more is Paul Bear Bryant ate here. In fact, the table he sat at, has not been changed in the restaurant. Also, beside his table is his photo and signature in a frame. There are also other pictures of Alabama and that other team football stuff everywhere. Besides the usual sandwich menu Ray's has everyday, they have 5 meats to choose from with several sides. I asked my waitress what was popular and she said the beef tips are on Tuesdays. Since I was there on a Tuesday, I went with her recommendation. I would say though, it was more disappointing than good. The beef tips were in a gravy on mashed potatoes and while not bad, it really wasn't packing with flavor. For my sides, I picked field peas (very good), slaw (more creamy than crunchy, a solid slaw), corn muffin (sweet and possibly the best thing on my plate) and banana pudding (which has to be near impossible to get wrong). My sweet tea was refreshingly sweet. Ray's is a solid breakfast and meat and 3 spot for breakfast and lunch in Dothan. I do wish my meat was more flavorful but it wasn't bad. The table of knowledge and Paul Bear Bryant table adds to the mystique of Ray's. I will eat here again. read more

Usually, Ray's is a good place to come for lunch. Today, I stopped in for lunch and I sat at a table for thirty minutes while the waitress talkeds to the people at the table next to me the whole time. I was ignored until I finally went to the front and ordered my food with extra ranch. When JC Peterson finally brought me my food, he told me they were out of ranch. Salad needs dressing!! I wound up telling him I didn't want it and I was leaving. He told me to talk to the lady at the front. I told the older blonde lady with the glasses on that I wanted to leave because there was no ranch for my salad and I waited for thirty minutes for my food. She told me that i I want waiting for thirty minutes and asked me where I'm from. I'll never eat at Rays again! "(Reply to comment)" Thanks for the offer, but I don't want a free salad from your "LOCALS ONLY SOCIAL CLUB." And, I never used any offensive language, or yelled at your employees. Ray's restaurant has held a place of honor with me for years. My grandfather, who lived 330 miles away, would bring me out to Rays for breakfast at 5 in the morning whenever he would visit. Now under new ownership, Rays offers lunch, and given my relationship to the place, I had to give it a shot. The first thing you notice about Rays, is the simplistic decor. The same decor it's had for years, even before the change in ownership. Sure there are pictures and trophies, but believe me, no professional decorated Rays. This doesn't harm the experience in the least. If anything it immediately informs you that this is a family owned and operated establishment, and they will take care of you. The second thing you notice is the kitchen. You can see most of the kitchen from just inside the front door, and I'm pleased to say that it's the kind of kitchen I would want to work in. Very nice. Very clean. Having only eaten lunch here once, I can only attest to one dish. I ordered the NoBo wing basket. That's 10 wings, fries, and a drink for 6 dollars. The wings themselves are a decent size (bigger than I expected based on the price) they're juicy, breaded perfectly, and fried to perfection. I honestly believe they're the best in town. I recommend trying the Sweet Bourbon Molasses sauce. Now that's all the great stuff that earns Ray's 4 stars. Here's what keeps it from 5... Fries. When I go to a diner, I expect the fries to be less of a side and more of a complement. These fries had little taste and were kind of soggy. I couldn't really figure out the problem, but there definitely was one. Hopefully I just happened to eat there on a bad day. With great crispy fries, Rays is a 5 star. Easily. Seating. Not much they can do about this one and it's really not a big issue, but the seating is just old. On one hand it means it's worn in and fairly comfortable, on the other it means is sunk in and hard to get out of. Again, not really the difference in five star and four, but if you go with someone who has trouble getting up anyway, you should take a table instead of a booth. Overall, Rays is a very charming, home town restaurant, with good food and great prices. read more

Rays lunch is always good. The environment is ok, don't expect anything fancy or even nice but it's ok for a quick lunch.

Stopped in for breakfast today and boy what a mistake. I had the biscuits and gravy with ham. The biscuits were on the old side and cold. the gravy was thin enough to suck up with a straw, and not hot by a long shot, wouldn't even coat the biscuit and none would stay on the fork. Pretty sure it was either from a mix or possibly out of a can and watered down. The ham was diced in real small pieces maybe this is the way they do things in Dothan but for me no way. didn't even finish 1/2 of it. It's real poor when you can't even pull off decent gravy. read more
