The room is small, as expected, but perfect for a solo traveler or couple looking for a clean, comfortable place to shower, cool off, and rest. The AC absolutely cranks, which was heaven after being out in the heat all day. The owners have added so many thoughtful touches: toothbrushes, single-use toothpaste, makeup remover wipes, bath gels, plus a mini fridge and microwave in the room. When I checked in, I was greeted with bottled water, fruit, and cookies, such a kind welcome after a long day. There are also cute patios with hanging lights where you can sit and eat takeout, and there's even a homemade ice cream shop right next door with a really vibey outdoor patio. One of the owners mentioned a nearby trail just behind the motel, and I'm so glad I listened. I ended up walking through the beautiful Mary DeDecker native plant garden alongside a babbling creek with little bridges and an incredible sunset view over the mountain ridge. It turned into one of the highlights of my trip. This place may not look like much from the outside, but it has heart, kindness, and everything you actually need for a peaceful stay.

Room is 'tight' so not really room for open luggage in general. The bed was very comfortable with nice linens and a variety of pillows. The heating/cooling worked quite well without a lot of noise. Floors are carpeted. Room had a small fridge with the coffee maker and ice bucket in the bathroom. Multi-use products in shower and by sink. Hot water was quick. Everything worked. Bathroom was clean. Towels were older, but clean and in good repair. The ice machine is in guest laundry on the far right side (away from the office side) of the complex. At the time of booking, I was told someone would 'call next year to take payment'. Nobody called. I have decided not to stay there, so I called to release the room and the woman answering the phone not only put me on hold, rudely and abruptly, tells me, "Nobody was going to call, if you didn't get the email then you don't have a room." I said, "This could have been very upsetting if I was calling to make payment, and the room wasn't held for me, because I was told I would get a call." Instead of saying, "I am so sorry Ma'am, I don't know who told you this but I assure you we will make sure the other reservationists know not to tell people this, and that to be sure to have you look for an email." But instead she was RUDE and so I hung up. GOOD GRIEF! She needs an attitude adjustment. She shouldn't be on the phones. She's impolite. She doesn't realize that people view the Dow Hotel by the treatment they receive and it starts at the beginning, ....at the front desk.

First issue, they are renovating the first floor for which I have no issue. The problem? You need to post that online BEFORE folks make reservations. I have mobility issues and there is no elevator. I had to drag my heavy luggage up narrow stairs...very painful. Second issue, problems with their key cards...lots of trouble getting into my room with the digital key cards. Very frustrating. Third issue: their pool is closed in the middle of the hot summer. Post that online BEFORE folks visit and book on your website! Even if it's only temporarily closed. Fourth issue, the water was turned off for over 2 hours during the middle of the day for maintenance. Very inconvenient! Lone Pine is a beautiful little town with charming restaurants but not sure if I can recommend this hotel based on my most recent experience.

Whitney Portal area every year, and unfortunately, this was one of the worst experiences I've had. The condiments were left out for everyone to grab, tables were not clean, and there seemed to be very little attention to sanitation. When I asked about it, the explanation was that "it's been like that since COVID," but that doesn't make it acceptable, especially years later. The food was also extremely overpriced for the quality. We paid $39.98 for two chicken sandwiches without drinks--one crispy chicken sandwich that was extremely spicy and a grilled chicken sandwich with lemon pepper. Neither was enjoyable, and we ended up throwing the food away. My recommendation: Eat in Lone Pine before heading up to Mt. Whitney Portal. You'll likely find better food, better value, and more options. Unfortunately, I felt like we wasted our money here. I would give less than one star if that were an option, but I'm sharing this review because I hope it helps other visitors make an informed decision.

REVIEW FOR SHOWERS ONLY - rest of place looks good…read more Two of us took showers. In mine, there was no place to put clothes except 2 tiny, small shaky hooks on door and wall. No floor mat; no bench (a must); no place to put towel; no place to put clean clothes; no place to put anything; floor all wet after shower (bare feet on god-knows-what). Shower aimed at open curtain so HAD to get into shower lest everything got sprayed before temperature was adjusted. After shower, ZERO ventilation so worse than a sauna - instant sweat. Also, HIGHEST price of all options along Hwy 395. Other person said her shower was awful - water never mixed/adjusted. It was either all hot or all cold water. BAD plumbing. Outside the showers, in mixed-gender area, plenty of room after shower. But zero privacy so had to undress/dress in tiny shower cubicle (about 2x3ft space). It was absolutely disgusting and we wish we had elected to book anything but this offering. It's too bad as all the hotel rooms and even the house seemed to be more updated than the 2 bed apartment. It's old and antiquated and deplorable at best. The AC smelled of smoke and dust, within 2 hours our eyes and throats were extremely irritated. There's no way we could have made it through the night. It was dirty, old, dilapidated and probably shouldn't be rented out. I'm very bummed as all the other reviews seemed decent for the hotel rooms - which is undoubtedly where we should have stayed. The other glaring flag was that every motel along the 395 was full, this one was completely empty. $200 lost and lesson learned.
