I booked a room for the following year for the film festival in 2026 when I was there for the festival in 2025.. At the time of booking, I was told someone would 'call next year to take payment'. Nobody called. I have decided not to stay there, so I called to release the room and the woman answering the phone not only put me on hold, rudely and abruptly, tells me, "Nobody was going to call, if you didn't get the email then you don't have a room." I said, "This could have been very upsetting if I was calling to make payment, and the room wasn't held for me, because I was told I would get a call." Instead of saying, "I am so sorry Ma'am, I don't know who told you this but I assure you we will make sure the other reservationists know not to tell people this, and that to be sure to have you look for an email." But instead she was RUDE and so I hung up. GOOD GRIEF! She needs an attitude adjustment. She shouldn't be on the phones. She's impolite. She doesn't realize that people view the Dow Hotel by the treatment they receive and it starts at the beginning, ....at the front desk. read more

Old school since 1923. We came out here to spend the weekend for an event with friends driving in from other nearby states. The motel has a perfect location on the main drag in this small town. If you book any motel in this small town everything will be withing walking distance. They made an error during our check in and I was not happy about it. The front desk agent called me while we were out for dinner and had it corrected. We were satisfied with the rooms comfort and amenities in the newer 1957 section. read more

Visited Lone Pine to tour the Western Film Museum and Alabama Hills. Stayed at the historic Dow hotel. I booked a historic room in the main building. Free parking was abundant. The room was a little larger than I expected. I made sure to book a room that had its own bathroom. The employee's were pleasant and the hotel was clean. The main hotel is cooled by the largest swamp cooler I've ever seen! I would stay there again. read more

No Air Conditioning. It's 107 degrees outside. We are in an upstairs room, hot and sweating. We spoke to the young blonde woman at the front desk to move rooms. She started arguing that it says our room is part of an evaporative cooling system. When I showed her on their own motel website it says Central and nothing about Evaporative, she still argued with us. We asked to speak to the manager, who of course was not there until morning. read more

I've stayed in here many times, and loved the old historic hotel experience. I stayed there this week and was disappointed. The new owners don't seem to grasp the historic importance and charm of this place. I sat in the front area trying to read a western book 9pm at night while trying to ignore the front desk person who was on a loud Zoom call oblivious to any guests. And there's the warm lighting i the once-cosy front area.that has been replaced with cold LED bulbs. Wait, one more thing. The pool & hot tub are out of order, the sign on the gate says NO TRESSPASSING. How about "So Sorry, this Area is Being Repaired". Would have been nice to know this before I booked. BIDET. These five stars are for the delightful surprise of finding a bidet in a motel in a small town in INYO. The rooms are dated but clean, shower stuff in a dispenser to reduce waste, fluffy towels, comfy bed & pillows. Aside from the occasional bugs (which is expected in the area given the location), you can't get much better than the Dow Villa. I look forward to my stay here each year. I love the welcome banner the motel loads into their light display to welcome Badwater 135 runners. P.s. internet speed isn't bad for the work we need to get done here too!! read more

Stayed here at the motel in the original building after the sale of the motel took place. Already seeing higher prices and a decline in room quality. While the rooms in the old building were updated to doors with key cards to open instead of keys, the room I stayed in twice now has been smelly and not up to snuff. I sincerely hope the new owners will continue in the tradition of the original family, not raise prices or add penalties fir early checkin and check out. These were really nice reasons to stay here at Dow Villa. They made it a treat to stay here and be able to check in a bit earlier if the room was ready anyway, without having to fork over 30 dollars extra. This economy doesn't really call for that. And please make sure we have the smaller wash cloths for the shower and that our room is free from odors. read more

I first started staying at Dow Villa over 20 years ago. Stayed here many times and was always amazed at what a great place this is in such a small community. Just wrapping up a one-week road trip on Hwy 395 and the adjacent roads. Stayed at Dow Villa the first two nights and am staying here the last two nights, too. My room is immaculately clean. I've got handicap parking outside my room and the shower etc is all accessible for me. (Recovering from back surgery.) Some people may think my five-star rating is too high BUT I believe it deserves five stars when considered in light of the alternatives available. It certainly deserves no less than four stars. My compliments to the ownership and management on maintaining such a great motel. (Haven't tried their hotel, yet.) I can guarantee that any time I'm in the area, this is where I'll stay. read more

This spot was great as a home base for trekking around the Mt. Whitney portal and Alabama hills. The pool was low key but very refreshing. I also left my pillows there and they sent them back to me no questions asked! Would definitely book this spot again. read more

Clean, dog friendly! Booked literally last minute at 3:00 am (we were nearby camping and the weather got too bad). They accepted us and two dogs without a crazy up charge. Room was clean and updated. Shower was hot with good pressure. There was also a microwave and a coffee maker with coffee. Front desk has coffee in the am for guests, as well as ice and a water filling station. This is apparently a historic motel (from Back in the Western movie film times) and is right in the center of the small town of Lone pine. Easy to walk to most anything in town. There is parking but not good for big trucks/campers (can park on the street or on side of building if this is you). read more

I thought this place was going to be some nasty roach motel in a one horse town. Wow, was I wrong. Firstly, Lone Pine is a pleasant little town, used by extraordinarily fit individuals with no life insurance intent on hiking up Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, sorry Mountain Shasta. Lone Pine is also a base camp for movie crews. But I digress. Dow Villa is a magnificent little hotel. It is extremely clean with well-maintained rooms, with a friendly and attentive staff, from Yolanda and Ariel to Billy and Benjamin. Price was insanely low. The cost of my stay was less than the cost of 4 Fiji waters at the MGM Grand in Vegas. I could not have been happier. My road trip was a continuation from Los Angeles to Reno, though I stopped in Lone Pine prior to visiting Manzanar, 10 miles to the north, the site of an infamous interment camp for Americans of Japanese ancestry during WWII, a heartbreaking chapter in American history. Whether you're hiking, movie producing, or revisiting history, stay at Dow Villa. Also, as a bonus, there are no more insects in California because I apparently hit them all with my SUV. read more

Located in small town Lone Pine near Mt. Whitney and so many hiking trails to choose from. The town is small and people are friendly. If you are Vegan bring some favorite foods because there's not much here. The hotel has an older section and newer one. The older section has some history of movies made there and loaded with pictures, antiques etc. They have toiletries and if something is missing they will provide. I visited on my way to the Bay Area and back. I like the first room better. The pool was open on my trip back. I can't review that since I did not use it. The jacuzzi is not available which I would have loved but will be open later this season. They are upgrading it. They are not stingy on towels either. Not all rooms have refrigerators so ask about it if you need one. There is a shared refrigerator in a locked room . The front desk personnel are all helpful with whatever your needs not just hotel questions but activities and hiking in the area. Excellent historical motel. We have stayed here a few times. The motel is easy to book through online, we called because we had a dog. The receptionist was super friendly and helpful. She quickly helped organize a dog friendly room even though we called as we were driving to Lone Pine. The room rates are very reasonable even for a dog friendly room. When we arrived we were able to find parking quickly. The property is cute, quaint, and clean. There wasn't a "dog" area that I found but there were plenty of grassy areas to take the dog to go to potty. The room was clean, warm and comfortable. It had everything we needed for our stop on the road trip. There was a nice new mini-fridge, TV, coffee pot, toiletries, desk, and free wifi. The beds were very comfortable, and had 4 pillows each! This seems silly but I love pillows especially if there are 2 of us and there are uneven numbers of pillows. I always need 2 for myself. Anyway lots of comfy pillows. I would definitely recommend staying here if you visit Lone Pine. Plus the best Chinese food you'll ever eat is just a 2 minute walk away! We eat at the Merry Go Round every visit. It's tiny but amazing. Also this motel is famous for the Hollywood stars staying here back in the day when they filmed all the old westerns. read more

Stayed here at the end of January 2023. This place is a hidden gem! To start, the gal at the front desk was quick, efficient and friendly. Many times we run into people who act like we're bothering them, but this was not the case. She went the extra mile to help our friends with the key card for their room. NICE! The rooms were also nice, clean and comfortable. It was nice to get out of the freezing cold. We had been tent camping the previous week in 30 degree weather. The hotel is within walking distance to a nice little museum/gift shop and a few good restaurants. We loved the Alabama Hills Cafe!!! We went there 2 mornings in a row. Will definitely be back the next time we hit Death Valley. We have lots more to explore! read more

What a delightful surprise! I'm a little picky about hotels and I generally avoid motels unless absolutely necessary. But given the history and charm of the Dow Villa, I pulled into the carport and went inside to check it out. This may be the first time in my life that I've made a hotel reservation in person. Weird. Spoke to the helpful, professional front desk attendant, who answered my questions about the differences between the motel and hotel rooms and the history of the property. The hotel rooms are landmarks, and therefore cannot be renovated and are in their original condition. She offered me to have a look at the available room and I took her up on it. Glad I did, because it was a treat to step back in time but not my cup of tea. I went with a motel room, all of which have been recently renovated and updated. My room was on the ground floor, quiet, spotlessly clean, and smelled fresh. I was delighted by the cute western decor and the live plant -- what a nice touch! Modern fixtures, a comfortable bed, a comfy chair, plenty of mirrors, decent amenities, and plenty of space. I felt safe and comfortable. Looking forward to my next stay here! read more

We didn't book Airbnb or look up any hotels info. Never stayed in a spot with *motel title attached to it in the past but it's AAA recommended and my man friend Dr James stayed here recently... he said its a historical site ~ I noticed it's newly remodeled in a great location, right in the middle of everything. The deluxe room was huge and everything is new and super clean for $180 a night. It will go down to about $80-$100 during winter. Staff were pleasantly nice. One of the mattresses need to be replaced for the other one was very comfortable. The decor was not bad but it is like most hotel's standard. We didn't care much for the vomit looking curtains but loved how all the furnitures are new! :) This is the spot where hikers, bikers and campers intentionally like to come for their favorite spot - Mount Whitney. There is a restaurant right next to us. Convenient. Brunch there was pretty good. We did the biking trail @ Alabama trail - lots of alien looking rocks! A must see.. it's such a phenomenal experience.. read more

We stopped, almost by accident just because we were tired, and found this marvelous restoration of the oldest motel in town, which has a modern motel beside it. We stayed in room 256 in the old hotel, and it was wonderful. Period furnishings, old west style, and old photographs were a nice touch. Parking was easy. There was a nice outdoor pool. It's owned by two women, and managed by another woman. The man at the front desk was very friendly and accommodating. read more

Went to the top of Mt. Whitney and along the way one of my climbing partners succumbed to HAPE " Altitude Sickness". We sent him down with some hikers, the problem was he had my keys and wallet in his truck and he was gone. After reaching the Summit and returning to Lone Pine operations at the DOW Motel told me no problem, "we got you on this". First thing they did was get me some water, then accessed my Credit card from a previous stay. The hotel was booked but they secured a room in the newer motel area. Because I was locked out of my truck they gave me a power cord for my phone no questions asked. Next day, they told me keep working in your room until you are ready to move over to the Historic portion of the hotel. Upon arrival in my new room - 60 yard walk - it was a great spot with a view of Whitney being hit hard by a storm. Forgot to mention they tolerated the Emergency Roadservice who set the alarm off while opening the truck for 30 minutes. Then the locksmith guy who set up camp while Re-keying the vehicle. The rooms were immaculate, quiet, great television, strong WiFi. The folks at the DOW Motel & Hotel had my back in a tough spot 100%. Can't say thank you enough for the kindness. As for Mt. Whitney, be physically prepared, bring the appropriate gear & good luck because it is worth the effort. read more

I stayed in a "historic room" and it had everything I needed for a good night sleep. The shower needs a new head but it got the job done. Staff was kind and professional as well. This was a totally unexpected stop. At around 10 PM, we realized we were going to need to get a room for the night. I knew I would not be able to drive home since it was already past my bedtime! We called around to different hotels and this one had the best price, as in the lowest price. All we needed was a place to lay our tired bodies. We didn't even use the tub/shower. We slept and left. We ended up getting the last room because someone had JUST cancelled. TIP: During the summer months when there are lots of travelers, it is a good idea to reserve a room rather than take your chances. For the price, you feel like you should be staying in a nicer hotel, but in Lone Pine, it seems all the hotels have a higher price tag! With that said, this was a steal of a deal ... here. Upon entering our room, it really looked fine! Not a complete dive, although it was not recommended to us by a waitress we spoke to at a nearby restaurant. I will say that the couch looked quite dirty. Kind of like many dirty hikers had just plopped down there over the years. The bed was nice and comfy. There were 4 pillows on the bed and one in the closet along with an extra blanket. The extra stuff was for the fold-out couch. The decor in the room was sparse, but nice enough. I loved the metalwork on the base and stem of the lamps! There was one little green plant on the desk. The room had a mini-fridge and a microwave. I'm not sure what the older section of the place is, but our room had a bathroom, sink area, bed, couch, and desk in it. A complete mini-suite. We had our own A/C unit, which I turned on in the middle of the night. It worked great, but it sure was noisy. Fair enough of a trade off! The motel provided a WiFi code, but it really was super slow to nonexistent WiFi. Don't count on it for anything important! In fact, there were two other WiFis in the town that I connected to and they were just the same. We had been on the road all day and relied on charging our phones in the car. However, we didn't anticipate a need to bring the wall chargers, only the cords. We were all counting our lucky stars when we saw the USB Port on the table by the bed. Oh yeah! We were able to get our phones charged and ready for the next day! This was definitely one plus we were not counting on in an older facility. The room was also equipped with a nice sized Vizio Flat Screen TV. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it to work with the DirectTV, so we didn't watch anything. In brief, I would stay here again. Just realize it isn't an upscale hotel even though the price of the room is a little steep. It must just be the location. read more

I had the pleasure to stay at the Dow Villa twice this past week, going to and coming from Lake Tahoe. I'm in LA. First, I knew I'd like the place by the service I received when I called to make reservations. Friendly and helpful. I travel a lot, and always appreciate those qualities. Don't always get them. The room was perfect. Two queen size beds. I was alone. Since I usually (almost always) have trouble sleeping the first night in a different bed, I wasn't expecting much. I couldn't believe it - I tried one bed - it was goood. I tried the other one - also really good. In my experience, when there's two bed, one always as the overly-slept-in mattress. These were great! There was a not-too-small refrigerator to keep my cooler food cold. Everything was modern, and well, very nice. Returning from up north, got a similar room and had the best night's sleep I had all week. It's right down from Mt Whitney, so after a great night, got up and went hiking just a little before I went home. This is now my go-to place on the gorgeous 395. I will also be actively recommending it. read more

Attention Travelers on Hwy 395: THIS MOTEL IS THE BEST PLACE TO STAY WITHIN 100 MILES! The facilities are modernized; the place is clean and well-kept; it's located within walking distance of everything in Lone Pine you could want to see; and the staff - especially Sarah at the front desk - is a real pleasure to work with. The swimming pool and jacuzzi are very clean and there's plenty of space around the pool to spread out and relax. The place must be very popular because it fills up at night but seems to empty out by 10am. Despite the seemingly large occupancy at night, it is very quiet. I highly recommend the Dow Villa Motel and will always book it if I'm traveling Hwy 395. read more

If you like historical buildings then this place will be treat for you. The original two building motel is absolutely amazing especially the lobby. There are old photos of this hotel on the wall from the 40's and on. This motel was very popular with the Hollywood movie production company's who lodge and partied here. The historical motel two buildings have awesome rooms with bathrooms, radiator heating. Other newer buildings have modern amenities including air conditioning and larger rooms. There is an outdoor door pool with a shower. The property is located on Hwy 395 in the heart of Lone Pine. My wife and I have been staying here for the last 20 years and love the atmosphere and the historical value. Customer service experience has been ok to disappointing; you think the Managment would step up their game but customer service in my opinion requires improvement and consistency. I would still recommend staying here because of the awesome accommodations and the historical value. I will keep making this my main point of destination when visiting this area. I feel this place deserves a five star rating but the customer service needs improvement; four stars for now. read more

Stayed here on a visit to see my daughter off to hike the JMT. We stayed 2 nights 8/12/20-8/13/20. This was my first big outing anywhere since Covid so I was very nervous. I shouldn't have been. Our room was clean, clean, clean!! I watched the crews cleaning and disinfecting night and day. Pool was not crowded and looked clean (we didn't use it). We had a snafu with our room key upon arrival, went back to the front desk and the gal asked if I wanted upstairs and I thought "OH NO Here we go" because I just had knee surgery. I told her no and without hesitation she did her magic and got us a bottom floor room within 2min. Excellent Customer Service! It's a historic spot on the Lone Pine "Strip" so it was so convient, we walked to breakfast, lunch, dinner, the grocery store and even the post office! Comfortable beds and at a reasonable price! read more

I'm giving this place 5 stars because it was everything I expected it to be. It's in a small town and it has a small town MOTEL feel. Plus the rooms are renovated, they have a pool that's open and parking. Rooms are clean with a mini fridge and microwave. A flat screen with all of the tv apps and nice pillows.
