Chicken Croque Monsiuer
Anna Marie P.

What a fun aesthetic this restaurant has! After wandering the Grounds for Sculpture, we decided to wander in to see if any tables were available for two. We were seated quickly and were greeted by Hallie who was such a gem as our server! Hubs got the Chicken Croque Monsiuer and I ordered the Homemade Bucatini with shrimp and cuttlefish. The pasta was delicious with a vibrant slightly creamy lemon and wine sauce and a perfect portion for lunch. This was a nice treat as we wrapped up our trip to the grounds!

Looked forward to going to this restaurant for the final birthday lap of this week. The atmosphere was awesome, very clean and they were quite occupied with customers. We really like this place as the food is so fresh, flavorful and such a good temperature. Our Mocktails were great. The food was plentiful and of course we had to bring the rest home. Our server, Christina was so pleasant and welcoming. She did a great job with us as well tending to other customers equally. Great Job Christina and thanks for your service! Can't wait to come back again. Thank you.

Visiting Rat's Restaurant has always been on my bucket list after a day of adventuring at the Grounds for Sculpture. The property feels like a slice of the French countryside, with charming architecture, manicured gardens, and scenic views that make the atmosphere romantic, peaceful, and perfect for a date night or a special celebration. *AMBIANCE* The ambiance is exceptional and worth seeing at least once. There is a parking lot right next to the restaurant. The weather wasn't great when we came, but there is a very scenic patio area overlooking Monet's Bridge and the pond. We came with reservations but had a bit of a wait even though there were some empty tables. Additionally, we were celebrating a special occasion but that was not acknowledged anywhere so it felt slightly underwhelming. *FOOD* The food was well-prepared and several dishes were enjoyable. For starters, we tried the petites bouchées de poulet ($22) which are bite sized pickled buttermilk fried chickens, though the portions were small for the price. I got the coffee crusted 1855 bone-in beef short rib ($42) which was very delicious. The meal was good, but I was not blown away by the food. *SERVICE* Service was courteous and professional. There was a slight delay where the sides arrived a bit later with our entree, but other than that service was attentive. Overall, worth checking out once for the beautiful location but just keep in mind at this price point, you are paying more for the ambiance than the food itself.

Branzino

Went here for dinner with a friend and although we had a reservation there was a wait of about 20 minutes (maybe more). Our waiter was super friendly and attentive. We both got the branzino which was the fish special that day and it was incredible! For apps my friend got the French onion soup which she enjoyed and I got brussel sprouts which were also tasty. There's a lot to see around the restaurant ( sculptures and such) which was nice to explore after dinner. The parking lot was full so we had to park outside of the gate on the street. Nice to know that's an option if the lot is full! I knocked off two stars because of the wait even though we had a reservation and because the bartenders in the bar area were not attentive at all. We stood there trying to get their attention for a long time before actually getting served.

Really nice experience! I reserved a table for 11:30 AM on a Friday, and I'm so glad we did. By 12:00 PM it was busy and when we walked through later at 1:30 PM it was PACKED! Go early. You're bound to have a more attentive server and better view. Food wise, it is pricy. For the price, I want to be blown away. It was yummy but you're paying for the ambiance and ease of dining at a popular attraction. My French dip sandwich was good, the French onion soup was good. The bucatini pasta had a strong lemon flavor but the cuttlefish was a nice addition. Pavlova was interesting! Had never tried it before for dessert. Wouldn't get it again but I appreciate the variety. I would come here again absolutely and sit outside but just know what you're paying for and what time you're going.

Coffee-crusted Beef Short Rib

Rat's Restaurant in Hamilton offers a moderately-upscale dining experience with "French-ish" cuisine. The restaurant is designed to feel like you're visiting a cozy, rustic French countryside chateau -- specifically inspired by Claude Monet's home in Giverny, France. The charming and romantic "casual elegant" atmosphere and one-of-a-kind location within the Grounds For Sculpture makes it ideal for special occasions or date nights. I recently visited Rat's with colleagues for a holiday luncheon, and while the atmosphere remains unmatched, the experience didn't quite live up to the memory of my previous visits. I had been here years ago for a spring brunch with my dining companion and her family, and I recall a much more expansive menu with higher food quality. My coworkers and I spent longer than I'd like to admit choosing this spot for our holiday lunch based on their online menu, so we were disappointed to find that they had recently switched to a much more limited winter selection, meaning the specific dishes we looked forward to weren't available. We shared a handful of appetizers, including the Shrimp Cocktail ($29 as of December 2025) and the honey lime brussels sprouts ($15), which were excellent. For my entrée, I ordered the bone-in coffee-crusted short rib ($38), which was just adequate. The coffee-infused sauce was very flavorful and the meat was tender, but the cut was unfortunately very fatty and it wasn't up to the level of quality I expected for the premium price tag. That said, my colleagues thoroughly enjoyed their appetizers, entrées - including the smashburgers with french fries ($26), croque monsieur with french fries ($28), and arctic char with wilted kale ($35) - and desserts. The presentation across the board was excellent, even if my specific entree missed the mark. Dining al fresco on the outdoor patio overlooking the small pond adjacent to the restaurant looks especially appealing when the weather is cooperative. Ultimately, I'd give three stars for the food with an additional star earned for outstanding service and terrific ambiance. PRO TIP #1: Wear comfortable shoes. One of the best perks of dining at Rat's is that you're free to explore several of Seward Johnson's sculptures inspired by classic impressionist paintings by Renoir and Monet - including "Were You Invited?" and the "Monet Bridge" - on the paved and unpaved walking path around the pond without paying admission to the park. PRO TIP #2: Avoid the line at the main entrance to the Grounds for Sculpture. Rat's has its own dedicated parking lot with a separate entrance (@ 16 Fairgrounds Road, Hamilton Township, NJ).

Blood Orange Mimosa
Tracey D.

This restaurant overlooks the Grounds for Sculpture but has its own parking lot and door, not associated with Grounds for Sculpture. Mike T, our server, was very busy but handled it with grace & charm. He made excellent suggestions and never steered us wrong. I started with the Blood Orange mimosa and it was delicious! My husband got the old fashioned and really liked it. We started with the delicata salad which was amazing. Very different and yet so tasty. For lunch my husband had a French dip sandwich and I had the chicken monsieur sandwich. Both were served with fries and both were good but nothing out of this world. The ambiance of the restaurant and seeing statues and guests walking around is exciting. Overall vibes were incredible and this lunch was one of the most expensive I ever had and I'd return. It is way more than just lunch and I feel it's more of an experience. It does not include admission to the grounds for Sculpture so plan accordingly.

The ambiance was everything! Surrounded by sculptures and serene pond outside, your walk into the dining hall is already memorable. Once inside, you will find two floors with elegant decor and quirky art. The second floor has private rooms and a slightly risqué mural, worth taking a look. The first floor has the main dining room and a cozy bar, designed after lounges in Kabul before the whole Taliban thing. Highly recommend getting a drink here before heading to dinner. The food is good, almost great, but misses some small nuances that you would get at a French restaurant. The charcuterie plate was underwhelming, with the local cheese lacking flavor. Still, we enjoyed the meal and thought the price was fair. The service was great and the waiter was very attentive. Once again, the ambiance takes it the extra mile.

Went here for a retirement party and everything was great. The decor, ambience, and food was great. They had a prefixed menu and open bar for the event. I had the mixed garden salad and the grilled branzino (forgot to take a pic of it but, was really delicious) for my entree. The waiters and bartender were extremely nice. After the luncheon we went on a walk through the Grounds of Sculpture. Def recommend for any occasion!

Turkey croissant sandwich

In late September, my work team and I did a team outing to Grounds for Sculpture followed by lunch at Rat's Restaurant. Although, I'm not the biggest fan of the name, there was some goodness inside. We had a group of 9-10 people and our server did a great job of handling all of our orders. I ordered the turkey croissant sandwich and substituted the salad with fries. The sandwich was very tasty and I would get that again. Afterwards, we decided to split a variety of desserts. My favorite was the lavender creme brulee. Overall, visiting Grounds for Sculpture and having lunch at Rat's makes for a lovely day out that I would definitely do again.

A great overall dining experience! We booked a late lunch reservation... just the right time we knew that we may have completed browsing the grounds. We picked to be inside of the establishment due to a hot weather forecast. I know it would be nice to be outdoors with a good view of the gardens but the interior decor of the restaurant is something I did not want to miss. The charm and exotic ambiance got me when we walked in. We had mocktails to start, I had the lychee rose tea and my hubby had the fruit punch. It's not as sweet as expected which we liked and recommended. For lunch, my husband had the Rats cheeseburger and I had the French dip. Both meal satisfied our cravings and anticipation. The servings are huge in serving size that both of us need to take home partly of the portion. Sadly as we were too full, we were not able to try any dessert at all. The service was great. No complaint of our waitstaff. They were very accommodating from the start to end. A beautiful place to be.

I've been coming here for 20 years and never had anything less than a stellar experience and this visit for lunch was no exception. The restaurant is definitely pricey but the food and atmosphere are worth it. The cuisine is French albeit more American with a French flair. The restaurant vibe is French country and the grounds are just incredible. After lunch we took a stroll across Monet's bridge and admired the sculptures and scenery created from famous works of impressionist era paintings. This is a place to celebrate a special occasion or impress a guest or date. They also have a really nice bar where you can catch happy hour. When the weather is nice make a reservation for an outdoor table because the views are incredible.

Good French food with a beautiful atmosphere in the summer. The bar also makes good drinks and has a fun laid back atmosphere.

Ask the Community - Rat's Restaurant

Is it gluten free?

They do offer products that are.

What is the dress code for dinner? We will be touring the park and then going right to the restaurant. It will be August, so warm weather. Would dress shorts and a nice shirt be acceptable for a man?

If possible, I'd leave pants in the car and change into them for dinner. It's not uber formal, but dress shorts might be pushing it, plus I found the AC and fans to be very effective, so you might end up cold.…

Is Rats open year round?

Yes they are.

What are the vegan options here?

Check the menu on line or call the restaurant

Do you have to pay to enter Grounds for Sculpture if you have a reservation?

Yes. It's an additional fee.

How is this place for a Sunday birthday brunch for about 35-40 ppl?

This place would make someone's birthday very special for brunch !

Do u really get your food from Sams Club?

This is false.. fresh produce, meat, fish, and bread as well as a huge variety of other products are coming in every day! FRESH!

The gentleman didn't greet us or ask for our drink order so we took it upon ourselves to order. Two regulars sat in the bar and conducted conversation with the man behind the bar. The coffee was good and strong. My only complaint was there was no real creamers, only mini moos. Our meals arrived after about ten minutes. Two over easy eggs, hash browns, buttered rye toast and a side of bacon. The bacon was flimsy and greasy--definitely needed work. The eggs were cooked to perfection and the crisp delicious potatoes complimented them perfectly. After our meal it seemed like the staff opened up to us and we really enjoyed our meal. Very affordable at about $13-$14 for two plus a tip. I would come here again solo on my day off.

I saw a new sign out front on a Bud Light white board that breakfast was now being served 7 days a week! Hot diggity! I parked out back and walked in to a mostly empty bar (2 customers who looked like they were regulars). The bartender approached and we engaged about their breakfast menu. It was pretty wide open if my desires had anything to do with eggs. They did. I opted for a sausage, egg and cheese on Kaiser roll, and mug of java. While it was being created in the kitchen I watched a show about exotic car auctions. A Borgati opening at a cool million bucks was an eye opener. Another black transport used by John Lennon around London was also put up and sold. Pretty cool entertainment. The sandwich was great! Double patty, fried egg, American cheese and a fresh, quality roll, made for a tasty and fun meal. The side of homefries was likewise excellent - hot, crisp and spicy with sautéed onions in the mix. Coffee, strong and kicking. The only shortcomings were the lack of a joe refill offering, and lack of utensils. Luckily, I had a spoon from the coffee, which was fine as a shovel. Afterall, Marty's is still a wonderful corner dive. It was made for comfort, not for speed, nor etiquette.

Service was a little slow but it was the bartender who was tending bar and taking care of tables so it was a bit much for her. We started off with the whipped ricotta with honey. It was good but I think if there was just a little heat added to it, it would have brought it up a level. I had the grilled cheese which was not what I was expected. It's basically a triple decker sandwich with cheese on top. I got mine with bacon. I ordered a side of onion rings which were very good and not overly greasy. Hubby got the chicken sandwich special which had grilled chicken, cheese, arugula and blueberry jam. Sounds weird but it works. He had French fries which he said were good. We were told everything is made fresh in house. Got a chicken Cesar salad to go for our daughter, which was good and took banana pudding to go, which was almost like a banana mousse and the peanut butter explosion which was delicious and very rich. Would definitely go back again

The kitchen dominates the back of the restaurant with a huge pizza oven and white tiles all around, and a clean bright fresh look, as you pass by to use the restroom. Overall it was fine but not incredibly memorable. We were seated at the strange 6-top table right inside the front door. Like people almost have to shimmy past you to get inside. The service was okay but not great. On the plus side, when we ordered something it came on the quicker side and also later in the meal the manager came by and checked on us. On the meh side there were long periods without being checked on by our server and I feel like I knew a bit more about the menu from reading it than they did. The best thing we ordered was the pretzel. The rest of the food was just alright. Bang bang cauliflower was crispy but battered in what actually tasted like a more dense funnel cake batter and had a twang of fryer oil that was on the cusp of needing to be changed. The sauce was flat. Cheesesteak egg rolls were not good. Soggy (again the fryer oil) and the prevailing flavor was green peppers. (Where I come from a cheesesteak guarantees shaved ribeye, American or Cooper sharp cheese and possibly fried onions but green peppers I would say crosses a line) Mozzarella sticks were mid. Truthfully the extremely long and skinny plates the apps came out on were just annoying. I'm sure the dish and kitchen staff can't stand washing them and plating the food on them either. Just buy some oval or round plates bruh. The cocktails were fine but uninspired. I ordered a peach old fashioned... Bulleit was the brand of bourbon and there was supposed to be peach bitters, peach syrup and "fresh peach" but it came out again a little on the underwhelming side without much peach flavor and the "fresh peach" nowhere to be found. (I expected perhaps a slice of fresh peach?) I didn't take a picture of the cocktail menu but I feel like it many have been like $16 for a subpar drink. Don't mind paying even $20 for a cocktail if it's executed correctly. We tried a blueberry mule off of the mocktails menu but asked to have Tito's added. It was good and properly served in a copper mug with a sprig of fresh mint. There was some live music, a guy singing and playing a guitar which was a nice touch. I appreciated that we could still have dinner conversation and the music wasn't dominating the room- it was more complimentary to the dining experience. In fairness our time there was all apps and some cocktails. We did not try the entrees. I wonder if they would have been executed upon at a higher level. The bathroom was spacious and clean. Had some neat (copper?) sinks with waterfall faucets. In a day and age where things are expensive, you gotta be firing on all cylinders to stand out as a place for folks to drop their hard earned money for a night out. It was alright here... But I don't know if I would choose to come back over other options. It landed between two and half stars and three stars for me.
