    Coffee-crusted Beef Short Rib

Rat's Restaurant in Hamilton offers a moderately-upscale dining experience with "French-ish" cuisine. The restaurant is designed to feel like you're visiting a cozy, rustic French countryside chateau -- specifically inspired by Claude Monet's home in Giverny, France. The charming and romantic "casual elegant" atmosphere and one-of-a-kind location within the Grounds For Sculpture makes it ideal for special occasions or date nights. I recently visited Rat's with colleagues for a holiday luncheon, and while the atmosphere remains unmatched, the experience didn't quite live up to the memory of my previous visits. I had been here years ago for a spring brunch with my dining companion and her family, and I recall a much more expansive menu with higher food quality. My coworkers and I spent longer than I'd like to admit choosing this spot for our holiday lunch based on their online menu, so we were disappointed to find that they had recently switched to a much more limited winter selection, meaning the specific dishes we looked forward to weren't available. We shared a handful of appetizers, including the Shrimp Cocktail ($29 as of December 2025) and the honey lime brussels sprouts ($15), which were excellent. For my entrée, I ordered the bone-in coffee-crusted short rib ($38), which was just adequate. The coffee-infused sauce was very flavorful and the meat was tender, but the cut was unfortunately very fatty and it wasn't up to the level of quality I expected for the premium price tag. That said, my colleagues thoroughly enjoyed their appetizers, entrées - including the smashburgers with french fries ($26), croque monsieur with french fries ($28), and arctic char with wilted kale ($35) - and desserts. The presentation across the board was excellent, even if my specific entree missed the mark. Dining al fresco on the outdoor patio overlooking the small pond adjacent to the restaurant looks especially appealing when the weather is cooperative. Ultimately, I'd give three stars for the food with an additional star earned for outstanding service and terrific ambiance. PRO TIP #1: Wear comfortable shoes. One of the best perks of dining at Rat's is that you're free to explore several of Seward Johnson's sculptures inspired by classic impressionist paintings by Renoir and Monet - including "Were You Invited?" and the "Monet Bridge" - on the paved and unpaved walking path around the pond without paying admission to the park. PRO TIP #2: Avoid the line at the main entrance to the Grounds for Sculpture. Rat's has its own dedicated parking lot with a separate entrance (@ 16 Fairgrounds Road, Hamilton Township, NJ).

In late September, my work team and I did a team outing to Grounds for Sculpture followed by lunch at Rat's Restaurant. Although, I'm not the biggest fan of the name, there was some goodness inside. We had a group of 9-10 people and our server did a great job of handling all of our orders. I ordered the turkey croissant sandwich and substituted the salad with fries. The sandwich was very tasty and I would get that again. Afterwards, we decided to split a variety of desserts. My favorite was the lavender creme brulee. Overall, visiting Grounds for Sculpture and having lunch at Rat's makes for a lovely day out that I would definitely do again.

made reservations for valentines dinner after a nice afternoon walking around grounds for sculpture! i have always wanted to dine here and it lived up to my expectations! Josh was an amazing server and made the experience very pleasant! we did the valentines prefix which included an apple salad, steak, crab stuffed lobster, creamy potatoes, and a delicious chocolate cherry soufflé. the vibes were great, service was great, everything was great! def a little pricey but its valentines day in this gorgeous restaurant with great food and service....so worth it!!! will be back in the warmer months to fully soak up the outdoor vibes :)

A great overall dining experience! We booked a late lunch reservation... just the right time we knew that we may have completed browsing the grounds. We picked to be inside of the establishment due to a hot weather forecast. I know it would be nice to be outdoors with a good view of the gardens but the interior decor of the restaurant is something I did not want to miss. The charm and exotic ambiance got me when we walked in. We had mocktails to start, I had the lychee rose tea and my hubby had the fruit punch. It's not as sweet as expected which we liked and recommended. For lunch, my husband had the Rats cheeseburger and I had the French dip. Both meal satisfied our cravings and anticipation. The servings are huge in serving size that both of us need to take home partly of the portion. Sadly as we were too full, we were not able to try any dessert at all. The service was great. No complaint of our waitstaff. They were very accommodating from the start to end. A beautiful place to be.

I've been coming here for 20 years and never had anything less than a stellar experience and this visit for lunch was no exception. The restaurant is definitely pricey but the food and atmosphere are worth it. The cuisine is French albeit more American with a French flair. The restaurant vibe is French country and the grounds are just incredible. After lunch we took a stroll across Monet's bridge and admired the sculptures and scenery created from famous works of impressionist era paintings. This is a place to celebrate a special occasion or impress a guest or date. They also have a really nice bar where you can catch happy hour. When the weather is nice make a reservation for an outdoor table because the views are incredible.

My last visit 6 or so years ago had me wondering what had happened to the restaurant I knew and loved. In the years that passed I found out management had been transferred from the Stephen Starr group to another company named Constellation. They specialize in restaurants and cafes located inside museums or other cultural places. I've heard and seen mixed reviews since finding this out, on Thanksgiving of 25 I decided to revisit for their $79 pre fixe holiday meal. The meal started with 2 positives before we were even seated. The first being a long secluded driveway into the "hidden" parking lot that we fondly remembered, and then walking into the courtyard and eventually the dining space. It still has the whimsical and casual upscale elegance it always had. We were seated upstairs in a not completely filled room that was to our liking. We studied the menu( which had changed since we first saw it) and made our choices. Our meal began with a soup/ salad course. I loved my mushroom and burrata salad, my guests enjoyed the pumpkin soup but originally it had been listed as chestnut soup. With chestnuts being pretty pricey it was not a surprise to me that a cheaper option was found. It dawned on my that the mentioned amuse Bouche was absent so I inquired and we were given dice sized chunks of potato pave. It was forgettable, maybe that's why our server forgot too. The app course was good, I had crab fritters. A good portion size probably because they were mostly fritter with very little crab. The reminded me a little of the popovers served during diner here. Good flavor. My guests liked their B sprouts. The entree course had changed too, instead of trout it was switched to arctic char. The preparation sounded good but I'm not a fan of this salmon like fish, I order the Turkey. It was ok. Cranberry sauce was forgotten so I had to ask for that too. I think my favorite part was the stuffing although bird was not overcooked and enjoyable. But honestly, I've had Turkey at lesser spots that was just as good if not better. I didn't like my dessert choice at all, maybe just a personal preference, but the sticky toffee pudding was just too sweet after a sizable meal. My guests liked the vegetarian entree of cabbage, it did look interesting but I didn't taste or get a photo. They also liked the ginger mousse tart too. There are still some good beverage options here, but not to the extent of the previous management. Service has been up and down in the past , and today was no different. Everyone was friendly and professional for sure. But attention to detail was lacking. Aside from a few items missing and having to be requested, there was also gaps in taking away plates or filling glasses. My dessert dish also had a very noticeable chip in it. I wondered how an hallucinating reprobate like myself could notice this, and not the handful of youthful employees who had touched this plate?? I'm pretty much back where I was with my last review. I love so much about Rats and GFS, but much of that is rooted in memories of a time past. The current reality is that it's a good restaurant that used to be great......

Ra-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta OK, Rat's is probably the furthest thing from Missy Elliott, but if you're going to name your restaurant, well, Rat's, I'm going to have fun with it. And Ratatouille is too on the nose. The reason to come here is the view. The gorgeous, garden-laden, Giverny-esque view. Hey, it's cheaper than a flight to France. Speaking of French, the food here is ostensibly "country French" (whatever TF that means), but it's not that good. The best on our table: - Bread and Popover: Warm, fresh, crisp - Steamed Mussels: Great texture, perfect broth - Duck Confit Salad: Surprisingly not dry The middling on our table: - Day Boat Cod: Under-seasoned fish meets under-seasoned sauce for a marriage of bland proportions - Artisanal Cheese: Too many similar styles/flavors, not enough accoutrements - Hand Cut Potato Wedges: To be fair, it's not that hard to get this right The worst on our table: - Bone-In NY Strip Steak: Bland steak with even blander "duck fat" fries--this dish couldn't be more vanilla if it were served in Lululemon pants - Charred Broccolini: More like "how to burn your greens 101" For imbibing, we got the Rosemary Limeade, which was appropriately refreshing for a hot evening, and the Cherry "Margarita", which tasted like watered down Kool-Aid. Like I mentioned earlier, the only reason to be at Rat's is the view. So make sure to reserve an outdoor seat on the terrace, as close to the water as possible. Don't bother coming if you can only be seated in the dingy indoor area that was probably intended to exude rustic French country chic but in reality is where wood and light come together to cry tears of sorrow.

    Smoked Duck Breast*

10 out of 10 experience! My partner and I shared the hot seafood dip with sourdough! I got the mushroom rigatoni and my partner got the smoked duck. Everything was so succulent and rich! Not pictured but we also got complimentary popovers with a delicious compound butter! We sat outside and it overlooks a beautiful koi pond and figurines/statues! The inside is so cute and whimsical! The decor gave off your cool aunt's house with a global village coffee house, cottage core and whimsicraft aesthetic! I love that! Would recommend this restaurant for a celebration or a date day/night in combination with Grounds for Sculptures.

It was a delight to experience having lunch at this lovely restaurant. My wife and I made reservations at this place, we chose lunch just in time that we are done exploring "Grounds for Sculptures". We were cordially welcomed by the maitre'd at the front desk and then was nicely led to a table for two. The ambiance of the restaurant was visually pleasurable, it has a unique, romantic, picturesque and an impressionistic-style decor. Clean and decent. As soon as we were seated, their waitperson was already there ready to take our orders. We ordered drinks first and then ordered our entree later on. We opted to have mocktails which were tropical fruit punch and lychee rose green tea, both were very refreshing and I have tasted a good balance of sweet, sour and bitter notes. After a few minutes we ordered rat's cheeseburger (medium) and a French dip sandwich. I am glad that both entree was served hot. The burger has a perfectly seasoned juicy patty, the creamy, savory truffle aioli gave it a rich earthy flavor, the brioche bun added to the pleasure of eating the burger. The French dip sandwich was delicious with its tender slices of roast beef on a crusty roll, with melted cheese, served with a side of savory beef/onion broth for dipping. Both our entree comes with French fries. Food portion was plentiful, food price is fair considering the upscale quality. Waitperson service was impeccable and professional. It was really good that my wife and I decided not to have appetizer and dessert as the food that they served us was of substantial amount. I was really impressed with this restaurant. I may say my wife and I had an excellent experience at this remarkable joint.

I stopped in here with a friend for a late lunch after exploring Grounds for Sculpture. It was a chilly day, and we asked to sit away from the door. They sat us fairly close to a door that kept opening, so I kept my coat on. The restaurant itself was so cute and elegant. The "no cats" sign was pretty funny as well. Our server was prompt and provided us each with a slice of bread with some spread, and that was tasty. We both ordered burgers, which were maybe one notch above basic. I also had a hot apple cider mocktail that I loooved. I'd recommend them overall.

One of my favorite restaurants in Jersey! Beautiful decor! Gorgeous grounds! With sculptures. Our Server Marco G was outstanding!! Highest compliments to the Chef and Kitchen Brigade! Loved the plum salad! Warm bread served right out of the oven! Seared scallops so delicious! My husband enjoyed the short ribs! Chocolate tart with popcorn and icecream! Actually really good combination!! Parking on site. We made reservations on line. Highly recommend!

First off, today is my birthday as I was actually born on this day. Went to lunch with my daughter and of course hot as the dickens outside ( why bother to shower, wet going in the restaurant. The atmosphere was awesome, was actually packed for lunch when we arrived. We had a nice window seat where we could see the pond, Koi and those patrons that wanted to eat outside in the heat ( That's it, my grandma always said if I can't say anything nice about someone, then shut it). Our server, Sarah was awesome, from the minute we sat down she made our first time experience personal. First came out the refreshing, crisp, cold water in the glass. For some reason (no not that it was 100 degrees outside), it tasted so darn good as if it blessed and prepared our pallets for more come. We ordered the freshly squeezed White Peach Lemonaide, which was so delicious. Then we shared an appetizer. Trio of Speads. This was the first time having Watermelon Radish and it was so good. I wanted to ask for more, but knew I gad to have my lunch. The Golden Quinoa and Roasted Corn Salad (I ordered Salmon with the salad), was on fresh, flavorful and on point. I even used some of the Naan to wipe the remaining quinoa from the bowl. No, I'm not ashamed. Lastly, because they knew it was my birthday day I received *which we shared) a delicious Lavender Crene Brulee. This was so very good. I know this is the place to enjoy fresh food which was served quick by awesome staff My day was perfect. THANK YOU.

They also use that hanger for bacon. The pretzel was enough for 4 of us. I ordered the wings and selected Nashville Hot and Hog Sauce as my flavors. They claim they sell by the pound ($15.50) but it ends up being 8 wings. If you want to split flavors, they make it dry and bring the sauce on the side for dipping. Luckily the Nashville Hot is a dry rub. It was very good and not too spicy. The Hog Sauce is a combo of Buffalo and Garlic which was excellent. The wings themselves were plump, juicy and crispy. Five stars. Plenty of parking. Some tables available outside for outdoor seating when it ever gets nice in NJ. Bathrooms were very clean. You may find some little pink pigs around. Not sure if they're complimentary, but my wife took the one that was next to our table. My only complaint is they have too many of their draft beers designated for only 10 oz pours even with low ABV. And yet he performed a yeoman's job, moving from table to table with the calm bravery of someone who has accepted his fate and decided to try his best to do right by strangers anyway. The room itself was lovely, still dressed up for the holidays like a house that refuses to admit the season has moved on. It was pleasant to sit there and feel briefly insulated from the outside world, which was surely still doing whatever it does to people who skip lunch. I ordered the Wild Mushroom Risotto. It was delicious, earthy and comforting, the sort of dish that suggests someone in the kitchen cares. The portion, however, was modest for the price, leaving me fed but contemplative. My companions ordered a Caesar salad with salmon and a wedge salad with chicken, and both appeared content, which is often the highest praise one can expect at midday. With tip, the bill came to about one hundred dollars for three people at lunch, which felt a bit steep for what landed on the table. There is no crime in that, but it does linger in the mind afterward. So here we are. A good meal, a kind and overworked server, a pleasant room, and food that was enjoyable but not generous. Given the abundance of good eating options nearby, it will probably be a while before I return. I do not regret going. I am simply aware that time, money, and lunches are all finite things. Which is something worth remembering anywhere you eat, including places you like.

Terrible service !!…read more 1. Came here at 6:45 WITH reservations ahead and ended up getting a table an hour and a half later 2. Didn't get the food after 2 hours of waiting and it wasn't busy at all 3. Food wasn't even good 4. People were being rude and banging on stalls and yelling the bathroom 5. Only reason I didn't vote it 1 (other than it not letting me) was because the waiter was nice Ruined Mother's Day. Update: the owner came over and they're trying their best. thanks.
