Mmmmmm. This is my first time going to an Indian dessert store! I've never been before. The desserts here were amazing. I don't normally like sweets other than chocolate and ice cream, but they're done really well here. They were really nice and there was some street parking. I would have given 4 but I didn't feel like the Covid guidelines were very safe. The only comment I have is that they had people eating (prob workers) and the guy was shouting. We went there yesterday and ordered samosa and fried stuffed chilli. The fried stuffed chilli while it was hot, had a funky smell and then we spotted mold in it! It took us a couple of minutes to uncover that given that the chilli was served hot. I went to the counter with the food and started complaining only to find more white mold on the onion pakoras that were displayed in the glass counter!. This was a rude shock for us given that we have been visiting Rasraj for about 5 years now. The owners were in denial even when I took the stuffed chilli and asked them to notice the rotten and moldy smell emanating from it. We are going to stay away from this place and suggest you to do so to avoid food poisoning. read more

We were excited to try this place out but at the end it was nothing but disappointment. We went on a Thursday afternoon and ordered a cheese dosa & lassi for the kids. A Chinese sizzler for the adults. When we got the dosa, they had filled it chilis which we discovered when my 17 month old and 5 year old started eating it. The dosa batter was also sour which means it was old. We took the dosa back, they made a new cheese dosa but again, old batter. The worst was the mango lassi which ended up staining all of mouths, my kids clothes. They added YELLOW FOOD COLORING to it. Who does that? It was a ridiculous amount of food coloring too. our hands, teeth, tongue, everything was stained. My 17 month old threw it all (lassi and dosa) up an hour later and my 5 year old complained about a tummy ache. It was so bad. The sizzler was ok..nothing bad nothing special. If you want a place that uses a week old batter and a tooooon of food coloring in their food, this is the place. Honestly, if I read that they put food coloring in their lassi or food, I would NEVER ever let my kids eat there. We ordered undhiyu and hakka noodles without onion and garlic after phoning in to check that the restaurant would be able to accommodate us, but when we got home, noticed onions in plain sight (cooked white onions in the Hakka noodles, and a piece of raw red onion on top of the undhiyu). When we called about this, no offers to make things right were made, only insistence that no onions were added to each dish. I can understand that perhaps someone had made a mistake with garnishing in the case of the undhiyu and then tried to take off the onions afterwards, but the onions in the Hakka noodles were in plain sight and cooked into the dish. Having just finished a dim sum feast at nearby Great Seafood Harbor, I suggested to my dining partner we walk it off some. I waited while they called my # and I picked it up. They have utensils/plates off to the side. The portions are pretty much for 2-3 persons can share the dishes. The sizzler was super delicious. It had like 4 different items over spiral/bow tie noodle pasta. The sauce was spice (duh) and tangy like tamarind. It had chunks of paneer, samosa, a potato something, and another item not sure what it's called---besides Delicious: my Masala Dosa was good too, came with a soup-sambar- and 2 dipping sauces. We sat outside and enjoyed the great California spring weather. This place is popular. Folks are in and out. The food is good and their prices are reasonable. I saw groups ordering lots of little dishes and sharing...lots of folks ordered these puffy breads and especially these sandwiches that looked like "sliders." I recommend you come hungry! While I do quite a bit of ethnic dining, I haven't really eaten a lot of Indian food and even though I've lived in the LA area for 25+ years, it's only recently that I've started exploring Little India. The area known as "Little India" consists of Asian Indian-owned businesses and restaurants along Pioneer Boulevard in Artesia and draws customers from the large population of expatriates from the Indian subcontinent living all over Greater Los Angeles. My very first visit there occurred just by chance. I was having lunch with friends at a Filipino restaurant and one of my friends mentioned having Indian ice cream for dessert down the street in Little India. I'm always up for a new culinary adventure so off we went for some of the best ice cream I've ever experienced and I experienced that at Saffron Spot. Finally, I've arrived. Since then, I've had meals at three different restaurants, with the last one being my favorite so far and goes by the name of Rasraj. What's interesting about Rasraj is that they also have a small section in their menu of Desi Chinese items. The word "desi" refers almost anything Indian, whether it's person, place or thing; thus, Desi Chinese is Chinese food cooked Indian style. Basically, traditional Chinese dishes are prepared using Indian flavors and spices. For my visit there, I just stayed with their Indian dishes, but next time will be a different story. The thing about eating at Rasraj, it's better to either have some kind of working knowledge of Indian Cuisine or bring someone who's familiar with it. Either that or you just have to be really adventurous. When you walk in, the walls are lined with pictures of the various dishes they offer. Behind the counter, you'll see the menu items on a board and there's also a take-out menu that you can look at as well. The problem is that in all three instances, there are no descriptions or listing of ingredients next to the food items. So it's like ordering blind. Luckily, I brought a friend with me, who happens to be Indian, and what she had me do was point to the any of the pictures on the wall and she'd describe the dish to me. Based on her descriptions, we chose three items. From there, we placed our order at the counter, were given a number and waited for our number to be called. While in line waiting to order, we also picked up deep-fried chili peppers that didn't seem hot at first bite, but wow, a couple of bites later, my mouth was on fire. Thank goodness the food we ordered arrived fairly quickly because it was the yogurt from two of the items that helped cool the fire. As for our orders, the first thing I tried was the Danipuri. The danipuri are small round bread shells called puri filled with yogurt, potato, chili powder and tamarind and green chutneys sprinkled with coriander leaves. To eat it, you pop the whole thing in your mouth. I really enjoyed the light crunch of the shell as well as how cooling and refreshing the rest of the ingredients were to my palate, especially after eating that deep-fried chili earlier. For more of a kick, the tandoori wrap we ordered offered that and more. The tandoori wrap was naan bread topped with mixed veggies, spicy tomato sauce, cilantro and garnished with pomegranate and cilantro chutney. Yum! Yum! Yum! I don't even think I even have words to describe all the delicious flavors of what actually seemed more like an Indian pizza than a wrap. You get a nice heat hit from the sauce while the fresh cilantro leaves and cilantro chutney adds a nice little pepperiness. I also liked that the veggies still had a nice crunch to them. No sogginess there. The last dish was Papdi Chat which was a mixture of yogurt, boiled potatoes, garbanzo beans and garnished with tamarind and cilantro chutneys. Just like the panuri, this yogurt-based food was cooling to the palate, but the tamarind and cilantro also added a nice hit of sour and peppery flavors as well. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal at Rasraj and trying some things I've never experienced before and I look forward to a return visit. What I like about this place is the amount of photos they put up on the walls so people not familiar with Indian cuisine will be able to decipher what they like, will want to try, or do not want to consume. The names and variety of food offerings on this Pioneer Road restaurants is overwhelming for the unfamiliar with India cuisine. It's not as easy as your local buffet style neighborhood "Indian" or fancied up "Khyber " Westernized expensive Vindaloos , the menu is huge. India itself is a huge country with a diverse regional taste for food. This place can be a good starting point for the novice. Look at the yelp pictures and match the name then order . Or just just blindly order from the big list and let surprise be part of your meal pleasure. We tried one of the dessert from their large selection. We didn't know any of it and picked one solely for the funny name: Pista Barfi! And sugar free ! It taste like pistachio in condensed milk. This place is so good that I have driven down to Artesia from NorCal just to dine at RasRaj. Noticed in my recent trip that they moved half a block away from their previous location. Still on Pioneer and a mere 100 feet away, the new location is bigger, cleaner and modern. The menu remains unchanged which i was relieved to see, the only thing missing are the hundreds of pics of their food on the wall and i'm ok with that. Ok so let's break it down and get to the good stuff. RasRaj offers an all vegetarian menu from north and south India. I specifically like this place for their chaat. The dahi puri with sev on top is the big deal here. They take puri's you normally use for pani puri and add yogurt, potatoes and all sorts of goodies inside and top it with sev and cilantro. The flavors burst in your mouth and you can't help but close your eyes and grin because it's just that damn good. I've eaten 15 of these in one seating but i'm going to try and break that record during my next trip. They have these sizzler plates that are pretty good or you can stick with the traditional chole bhatura and dosa. The service is blah and i really don't care as long as i get my food, which i always do and it's fresh. This is probably the best place for indian food on Pioneer St. in my opinion. read more

Ambience - It is not one of those posh restaurants that is dimly lit with classy interiors.It is more like a fast food joint in India.There are no menu cards.The menu is handwritten on a board on the wall.You order the food and wait for your order number to be called out.You then collect your food and find a table to sit at.The food is served in displosable plates.Once you are done, you trash the plates yourself. Food - They have a wide variety of Indian food to choose from.North Indian, South Indian, Indo Chinese, et all.We ordered a gujrati thali that comes with 4 phulkas(indian bread),gujrati daal or punjabi daal(lentils), 2 veggies(you can pick any two from a huge number of gravies and curries), dhokla(appetizer), motichur ladoo(dessert), a cup of rice and pickle, all for around $9.The food was so tasty.Felt like we were dining at one of the best restaurants in India.We also ordered poori (puffed up indian bread)that was served with channa and halwa(sweet dish).The gobi(cauliflower) fry was very yummy too.The spice level was just right.We couldn't get enough of the food.We packed some potato bondas(dumplings) and jalebi(dessert) for our long drive to Grand Canyon. My first time here and here's my experience. I had Gujarati khadi which is a half white liquid but when I drank it I saw the wall of the vessel and it had brownish black sediments from some other dish god knows from when. I poured it out n took a pic. Otherwise food was oily n wasn't good at all. I spent a good amount of time in my restroom today and I'm not sure which place I ate at contributed to it. Here's what this place does well: Good food at a reasonable price. Came here on a Sunday and bad pav bhaji and samosas. The food has kick but is not overspiced (an issue with some Indian cooking - I speak as someone of this background), and the samosas are pretty crisply and filling. Portions are quite reasonable for the price. You order at the counter, and pick up the food, and sit down. Polite but relatively minimal service - and that's fine. This place doesn't offer any pretensions of being fine dining. I would say Rasraj is in the same league with a few other of the other of these types of restaurants (vegetarian North Indian food), in the Little India area, which are also quite good, but it's not really much better than those other options. It honestly seems like all the hyper-positive reviews for this place are fake, or, the service is better for non-indian/non-local folks because they feel more of a need to impress.. The food was strictly ok. Tried a few different dishes and I was just disappointed at how low the quality was for price. I could probably go to several other places on the same street for the same dishes at a more reasonable price and also actually delicious. We just wanted to try this new location out, but we probably won't be returning soon. One of the members of my party got cold sambhar. Not all, just one. Why the difference?! This makes me nervous about how they serve their food. And the portions for the Gujurati thali are so paltry it's embarassing. It's supposed to be a thali, not a free sample. And the "paneer sizzler" was topped with heaps of cheddar cheese. I understand that paneer sizzler didn't exactly come from ancient India but the cheese topping they chose was just too much. Otherwise the dish, which was paneer, bell peppers and sauce over some bow tie pasta, wasn't too bad. The two stars are because their innovative dishes are interesting. The Manchurian dosa, good. Paneer tikka, with garlic naan, good. Also, the servers are very polite and helpful. Their dry snack and sweet selection is vast. Rasraj in Cerritos is a rip-off when it comes to serving AQL (Accepted Quantity Level) for a cup of Tea. It is served in small polystyrene coffee cup and charged $2.50 per cup which is an outrageous price and is unacceptable. Food Inspector in Ceriitos/Los Angeles should investigate all these food services along Pioneer Blvd for the amount being served for various items. read more

Of all the places I've tried in Little India, this is my favorite because they have so much to offer outside of the typical Indian curry dishes you see everywhere. We've tried several different dishes, but the Sev Dahi Puri, Channa Bhaturra, Dosas, and Tandoori Wraps are the most memorable for me. This is a self-serve restaurant, so great customer service isn't to be expected. But from my experience, the people behind the counter are approachable and polite while the servers are distant but attentive enough. read more

Short review! I'm a huge fan of papdi chaat, in fact I got nuts for the stuff. Nothing is as good as the chaat in India, but Rasraj comes pretty close. It's definitely one of my favorite Indian restaurants in all of pioneer. It's around $5 for a big plate of food, pretty much no matter what type of chaat you get! So worth it. :) They don't have as many sweets as I would like but they do have kulfi! Yum yum yum. read more
