TLDR: It's the preferred restaurant for my Indian friends who don't eat meat, but I just don't get the hype. There are enough interesting options to come back for, but it's not THE Indian restaurant to bring people to. Cheese Dosa: It's good. A very thin crepe with a layer of cheese in between. I'd enjoy it as an appetizer. Vegetable Curry: The rice was fine at best, the naan was fine at best, and the curry definitely packed a punch. I didn't enjoy it enough to say that this is something I'd get again, but I know why vegetarians like it. I will say though that the bowl was packed with at least 3 types of vegetables, which is what you want in an entree. Palak Paneer: You get the same average at best rice and naan. The combination of spinach and cheese is always a reliable combination. Similar to the vegetable curry, this packs a strong punch. Heard dosas are the thing to get here. Ordered a medhu vada and a special onion rava masala dosa (with the masala on the side) along with a mango lassi. Drinks came first. My friend unfortunately spilled his drink, but the staff was kind enough to replace it at no extra cost. Was a nice thing to do - don't see that too often at old school Asian restaurants. The mango lassi was your standard fare lassi. The medhu vada came next along with sauces to dip with. Was fried well, not greasy. Taste and texture were on point. The dosa came next. Opted for the wheat dosa instead of the normal version - wanted a bit more of a crispy version today. Came with sauces as well. It was really well made and was really good with the masala and other sauces. Overall, pretty good dosa. Would def recommend! read more

We got here around 6:30 pm for dinner on Saturday night. Every now and then, I go to Artesia, CA to satisfy my craving for Indian food. For a vegetarian spot, I go to Udupi Palace, which references a city of the same name in Karnataka, India that is famous for their vegetarian cuisine, among other things. I ordered the South Indian Thali. A thali is a (big) meal served on a large stainless steel platter with a variety of small dishes, including rice, chapati (flatbread), papad (crispy wafer), lentils, vegetables, and a dessert. It's a "personal buffet" of sorts. I personally like to drizzle my dal (lentil soup) on top of rice. I also ordered a mango lassi. Almost everything tasted delicious except that today the chapati was not fresh because it was dry and tough. Also, the papad was undercooked because it was not crispy. If not for these two sub-par items, my meal would have been perfect. The service was good as the waiter was attentive. This was my first visit. It was quite a cultural experience, since I'm not very familiar with Indian cuisine. I've only been to Udupi Palace once, so this is just based on that visit. I ordered the idli and vada plate, and honestly it wasn't my favorite--the idlis were pretty hard and could've been much softer, and the vada was really dry. That said, the dosa and sambar were actually good and had nice flavor, so it wasn't all bad. I'd be open to giving it another try, but hoping they improve the texture on the idli and vada next time. read more

Flavor-wise, I'm used to the northern-style chana, so for me it leaned a bit mid -- but still enjoyable. The puris in the puri bhaji was delicious - might possibly be the best puris I've ever had. Also ordered chapati and dal. The dahi wada was too spicy for me. Great South Indian restaurant located in a prime spot on Pioneer Blvd. I ordered a onion hot chili uthappam which is basically a thick pancake and came with coconut chutney and sambar. While on the oily side, it was flavorful. Everything could have been spicier including the sambar. The rest of my party liked their masala dosas. Literally the best dosa I've had in the US. Tried the butter masala dosa and it was exceptional. The dosa was crispy and buttery, and each of the other components of the dish, the potatoes, chutney and sambar were excellent as well. In contrast, I tried Podi Dosa a week before, which was a huge disappointment, even with "Dosa" literally in its name. There the sambar was watery and flavorless, the chutneys were overly spicy and the dosa was meh. Can't wait to go back to Udupi to try the gunpowder butter dosa and other dishes. I had their masala dosa a couple months ago, which was pretty good, so I decided to try the thali this time. It's a colorful and appetizing plate! If you're thinking about it, I'd recommend sharing one thali with the whole group since it comes with a lot of rice and side dishes. The curries were hard to distinguish from each other, but the portions were generous. Overall, it was filling, though a bit underwhelming. The rasam was tasty and paired well with the yellow rice, which I think was lemon rice. I'm not sure why they added extra rice as a side--maybe it's a standard thali thing I'm not familiar with. The semiya payasam was really good! The beets were a little dry but tasted fine when mixed with the yogurt. The chickpeas had a tangy flavor, probably from extra tomatoes. The chapathi was a bit tough. I thought the sambar (above the rasam) and the vegetable curry (next to the chickpeas) tasted similar, though the vegetable curry was thicker. The final side next to the yogurt seemed to be lentil curry. The pappadam was crunchy and tasty. Came here for lunch after the New Year temple visit. Ordered my favorite dish, tomato, onion Uttapam, and hubby order rava masala dosa. Uttapam is excellent, and rava dosa was good. The tomato and onions on uttapam was perfect, accompanied by sambar and coconut chutney. So good Service is good, we were seated immediately, served within minutes of ordering. This is my family's go-to restaurant. Every time we're not able to decide or if we just want to eat out, we go here, and by habit, I always order the Chili Cheese Dosa while my family orders the Masala Dosa with an Idli dish. This is a great spot for vegetarian dishes. Before, Udupi's Chili Cheese Dosa used to be great, but I'm noticing that now they tend to put more tomatoes and less of everything else. As a person who doesn't really like eating raw tomatoes, I'm not sure if I'll continue with this dish any more. But it was great that the waiters, who can recognize us easily by now, continue to ask if we'd like to make any changes to our dish this time based on our last visit. I really appreciate their accommodating and welcoming nature. While some servers can be a little rude or judgmental, overall, the service is good. The Masala Dosa is usually good, although the potato filling is getting less and less, but the sambar is always the highlight of the whole meal, especially with the soft and large idlis. Their prices are getting a little too high based on the food they provide, but since this is a nostalgic place, we'd probably continue to go here. Some days it's pretty packed while others are less chaotic, but nonetheless, the waiting time is the same, and it's relatively fast too. This place is sooo good! I grew up eating South Indian dishes even though I'm Punjabi and it's so hard to find a place that has flavorful dosas but this place hits out of the park. Even the chana batura is soo good and it's HUGE. we were able to share one dosa with 2 people and all 4 of us shared the Chana batura. The service is so quick and great. I came here craving dosas, and the overall food experience did not disappoint! Appetizer: We started with rasam and vada, a first for me. The rasam was a flavorful, tart soup served piping hot. The vada, soaked in the rasam, was absolutely delicious, and we devoured it. Dosas we ordered: Masala Dosa Mysore Masala Dosa Mysore Dosa Gunpowder Butter Dosa Every dosa was good, and there were no leftovers--everyone cleaned their plates! The Gunpowder Butter Dosa was the standout favorite. The sambar and coconut chutney were spot-on and complemented the dosas beautifully. The dosa had a light crisp on the outside Service and Ambiance: The service was basic --efficient but nothing extraordinary. This is one of our favorite South Indian restaurants! We have been coming here for over a decade & the taste and quality of their sambar has been a consistent 10/10. In fact, same goes for their coconut chutney & masala potatoes. The restaurant is a completely vegetarian "fast-casual" spot located in a Little India plaza. Our favorites here include their rava dosa, masala dosa, chili uttapam, idli & vada with sambar/coconut chutney, & although it's North Indian they have some of the BEST mouth watering chana bhatura! Also the portions are HUGE so we usually get a few things to share. Their masala chai is some of the best I've ever had. I think maybe because it's a vegetarian restaurant overall I never leave feeling overly "heavy" afterwards. Back in the early 80's my dad was stationed in Chennai (South India) for a job training & since then frequently craves South Indian food-- which is how I was introduced to Udupi. For an Indian restaurant in Artesia, the food was underwhelming. The dosa itself was cooked well while being crispy and soft, but the masala potatoes were overly salty. The thali is a generous amount of food, but it was pretty tasteless, while also being overly spicy. The daal was watery and the rice was undercooked. The palak paneer was great! samosas were good but I can't get enough of the chutney they come with! The thali is a great sampler and the Mango Lassi is hard to not like! We've eaten here a few times and enjoyed the food, but after a few incidents have decided to frequent other places. After ordering takeout we realized the food quality isn't very good. Poor us are traditionally made of wheat and never dry out like this. So I'm guessing these are white flour. Also there's a strange aftertaste of the oil. Maybe bad cooking oil or overused cooking oil. The Bhaji or potato curry also didn't have a pleasant taste. We ended up tossing out the food. This is the second time our takeout orders have come out wrong. We did mention to staff at store, he was unapologetic and totally disregarded our complaint. Hope you clean up your practices. read more
