We ordered the qabuli uzbaki palau which is a rice topped with carrots and raisins served with a lamb shank. The raisins gave it a subtle sweetness that paired perfectly with the savory lamb. Our favorite was the bendi which was slow-cooked with tomato, onion and lemon juice. I had never had okra served like this and it was the star of the show. We also had the manto which were beef and onion dumplings along with bolani which is a traditional Afghan thin bread stuffed with potato and leeks, served with chutney. The lamb karahi had great flavor but next time I would do the chicken option instead because the lamb was very fatty. They have traditional Afghan seating available and there's plenty of seating. Samosas were baked and had good filling. Bolani wasn't oily but I would've wanted more leek. Surobi fish with naan was fried crispy - saltiness pairs well the creamy sauce. They do provide lemon to squeeze on top. Mixed grill had lamb, beef and chicken. Ground beef was good. Chicken karahi is a must try with the bread. It's also on the saltier did but it's clear you need to get th bread and enjoy the spices dipped into this traditional pot. For dessert, we had the sheer yakh, a delicious traditional ice cream made by hand on premise. It was served with crushed pistachio topping. Note that this is not on their current printed menu, so ask for it to round up the meal! The staff was attentive and friendly. The restaurant is clean and well air-conditioned. The service here is not great here. The server we had was really trying but I could tell others were just sitting around. Seemed like most of the staff were people watching and gossiping instead of doing anything. Our server was running around doing everything. We should have known it was not going to be a good meal when they informed us they were out of chicken when we tried to order. The drinks took an hour before arriving at our table and the food took even longer. It would have been quicker to walk across the street to get innout. When the food arrived, we were extremely disappointed with the portion size of the meat relative to everything else and most of the meat was super dry. If I could I would put 0 stars. My husband is a Korean Muslim convert and had gone with his friend to enjoy a lunch and they were given horrible service. The employees showed preferential treatment to other customers that were Arab or afghan. People who came in after them received their food almost 30 minutes earlier to my husband. The portions were criminal for two little tiny pieces of lamb. His friend accidentally forgot to tip and the waiter ran over to the other staff member to ask right in front of him if he tipped. After they had paid for the food the employees kept staring them down. The lights in their section of the restaurant (because they conveniently sat them separately to the other customers) was turned off and only in their section. It is a disgrace knowing that an environment that was supposed to be welcoming was the complete opposite. Work on your customer service asap. read more

The kabob was somewhat ok. The Chapli kabob was burned and no taste. They forgot to bring the drinks and after the third time asking we finally got it. The parking is limited however the service was outstanding - the food was on point and fresh. I loved the samosa and beef w spicy rice. The staff was prompt and friendly. I tried this place a few times before giving a review so I'd know exactly what to give. my favorite dish from this place is the Chicken Karahi as it is very flavorful. The waiters and waitresses best skills is their memory. We tell them a long and complicated order and with no notes or paper to write on, they bring exactly what we asked. When we eat as a family there we like to receive all our food at once but they tend to give us our orders one by one and some of us eat while others ate left hungry for a while. But I wouldn't dock a point for this. I would recommend asking if we are wanting to eat everything at once or if they can bring it one by one. Shams Afghan Restaurant is the real deal. This is from-scratch cooking, not fast food and definitely not microwaved or rushed. Everything is made after you order. If you choose a slow-cooked meat dish, expect to wait sometimes close to an hour and that's exactly why it tastes so good. The flavors are deep, authentic, and clearly made with care. This is not a place for a quick bite. If you want fast food, there's a Taco Bell down the block. If you want real Afghan food done right, Shams is absolutely worth the wait. We got their qabuli uzbeki pulao, vegetable samosas, chapli kabob and bendi and they missed the mango lassi that was ordered and my friend's shami chicken and beef was also missed. The samosas were brought to us cold. The pulao had no flavor and the chapli kabob was burnt. The only thing that was okay was the bread and the water. They also didn't have items from the menu we wanted, such as mantu and bolani. Overall very disappointed with our experience. Hope they can get it together since they just opened. read more
