I was in San Carlos on Sunday and decided to grab some food here to-go for lunch. Next time I may come in an eat! It wasn't crowded at 1PM on Sunday, even with the farmer's market going on downtown. I ordered these dishes to share with my husband: TEA LEAF SALAD, MOHINGA, and a SIDE OF GARLIC NOODLES. We were most impressed with the side of garlic noodles -- such a huge portion for a side! I'm glad I didn't order the entree version. Noodles weren't too oily, had a good texture, and lots of garlic flavor. Tea leaf salad was also a good portion and they gave us a lot of tea leaf dressing to mix in. Mohinga traveled well except the noodles became a giant clump when I got home. I reheated broth in microwave and submerged the noodles. I think the noodle soup would taste better in the restaurant. Overall it still had a good flavor. Only wish there was more catfish in the broth. This restaurant has tasty food and located in a cute downtown area of San Carlos! I saw some families with dogs sitting outside so it looks like they're pet friendly too. I'll come back to eat at the restaurant soon. read more

Just so confused.. I work in the restaurant world, so it takes a lot for me to go out of my way to write a review about another restaurant, especially if it's not a good review. But this restaurant has made this mistake more than 3 times now, so I guess it's time to write a review about it. I order take out via Grubhub every time, so the notes are not taken verbally, it's on the actual order, so I don't understand how this mistake continues to happen. I always get the rainbow salad because it's easy on my stomach, and I always make the same requests: "No tomatoes and no jalapeños, please substitute in their place extra tofu + more chili flakes" I've eaten this same salad at plenty of other spots, none of which I have to give requests for, because they give plenty of protein (tofu) and flavoring (chili flakes), but I make the request here, and it's ignored every time. I paid $15 for this dish, and it contained just a few tiny bits of tofu that's total bs. You guys should include more if you're going to charge non-vegetarian pricing. I'm paying for a regular dish that would come with all this extra protein, but because I'm veg I get a few micro pieces? Even when I specifically ask for more as a substitution? This place is a joke. read more

Opens at 11:30, difficult timing for me to order since my lunch time is from 11:30-12:00 pm. I wanted to give this place a try so I called anyway at 11:15 am. Thankfully they picked up. Anyway, I was told that it will be ready around 12pm. You have to provide credit card for phone orders. The restaurant looks clean, has decorations of different places in Burma. When I arrived ~11:50 am, my order wasn't ready. I was told to wait a little longer ~5 mins. The restaurant seems busy already. If you want something fast, this is not the place. I was not able to get in and get out of the restaurant for a to-go order. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Food smell great! I ordered chicken garlic noodle and Nan Gyi Dok. My husband ate the NaN Gyi Dok and I got garlic noodles. He likes his noodles, they were delicious! However, I thought my Garlic Noodles were a bit dry (chicken felt dry too) Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone who's interested in trying out Burmese food. read more

Frankly there are maybe too many options on Laurel Street, and I find I often can't decide so tend to go back to my old favorites, Santorini, Cuisinette, Town. I've looked at the menu of Rangoon Ruby's several times, and it just never seems to grab me. Today was the day! The interior is open and bright, and I love their light "fishture" Service was adequate, but indifferent. I had a hard time deciding so I went with the Rangoon noodles. I figured if they put their name on it, it would be special. The menu explains * Indicates spicy dish. Available with no spice or in mild, medium or hot. This is good for me, cause I'm kind of a spice wuss. So I asked for it to be mild. The waiter said, "We only have one spice level. It's in the sauce we can leave off the sauce." Well that wouldn't be so good. To his credit he brought me a little tiny dish of sauce and a tiny spoon and let me try it. Not too hot, so I went with it. RANGOON NOODLE Wheat noodles tossed with tofu, cucumber, cilantro, tomato, cabbage, chili sauce and dried shrimp powder. (~$12): As you can see from the picture, in fact it was almost entirely noodles with the other ingredients very sparingly added. I don't know if it's supposed to be this way, but they were barely warmer than room temperature. The sauce that tasted good from a tiny spoon, is not nearly so interesting when it's all over noodles. Tasted kind of like a modified version of ketchup. Maybe other menu items are more compelling, but with other favorites nearby, I doubt I'll be back. If you've been to those 'other' Burmese places along the east bay and the City ur familiar with the food...Tea Leaf or Rainbow salad is always the must try dish - crunchy, nutty, garlicky citrusy tea leaves with flavors and textures...love it! Ordered other dishes like the garlic noodles which was nothing fancy and ok. Other dish was the crispy chicken which is almost comparable to a general Tso chicken - deep fried and glazed with a sweet sauce with 4 florets of broccoli for color. Food was good but consider this the 'flashy' sister of BSuperstar so you'll be spending more with this one... nice decor, modern, airy, bathrooms clean with a mouthwash dispenser (nice touch haha). Service was a little spotty when we walked in...waited abt 5 minutes before we were seated (only 1 other table) and not given menus ...had to get up a ask for them. The restaurant is small and on a pretty fun street. There is street parking. The restaurant has a few tables outside the front of the store. It seemed a little cramped Inside so we sat outside. It was a beautiful day so sitting outside was preferred. The service was good. The fellow helping us was a little eccentric and was very eager to help us and do a good job. Our waters were always filled, he was very attentive. The food was delicious. Coconut rice was awesome. The samosas were really good too. The tea leaf salad is always a win. Disappointed by the terribly greasy food. Unbelievably, the tea leaf salad was drenched in oil. Chicken curry and mixed vegetable were so ordinary with small portions for high priced menu items. Great food and great service! Highly recommend the country style lamb and coconut rice.

I love this place! I've dined in a couple times, but get take out most of the time. We even had them cater to work once. Staff have always been most cordial and provided excellent service. I am in love with the Tea Leaf salad mostly for the dressing. However, the Rainbow salad is about as exciting with nuances of flavors also although different ingredients. For a tamer salad experience, the Burmese chicken salad also satiates an appetite for salad in a heavier sense with the chicken. Some dishes are more complex than others. The Rangoon noodles are pretty simple but full if exotic flavors. The garlic noodles offer a bit more complexity with some duck or roasted pork. That basil chili beef is so flavorful with some good heat to the slices of pliable beef. The Palata appetizer is perfect to get the appetite going. That sauce and soft multi-layer bread is sooooo smooth and delicious -better with chicken or lamb. My latest experience meeting a gf for a late lunch was delightful. We ordered a bottle of the Kim Crawford sav blanc and indulged in the tea leaf salad, garlic noodles, chili beef and palata. Everything was excellent. We were unaware they close at 2:30, but they were kind enough to allow us to sit outside, continue chatting until we finished. We also met the manager/owner? Jennifer who assured us we could relax as she ran off to another Rangoon Ruby location. The inside of the small restaurant is also nice with white table cloths and glass blown squiggly things dangling from the ceiling. I love the exotic food and everything else they have to offer here. The menu has great selection and the waitress was nice. But the quality of food is bad. The palata was really good. However the garlic noodles and the Rangoon lemongrass chicken was overly salty. The noodles was too garlicky and the chicken didn't have any hint of lemongrass. The worst was the country style beef curry. It smelled spoiled and we just couldn't fathom to eat it. When I informed the waitress about it, she didn't charge us for the beef and had the cook remake the garlic noodles and chicken. However, then garlic noodles and chicken both came out bland. All in all, it was a very unpleasant experience. I didn't think was possible but it became worse once we came home! read more

Worst Burmese food and expensive ! I love Burmese food and have had it many times in my life , whatever I got at Rangoon Ruby was abysmal and nothing compared to authentic Burmese food. The male waiter was nice and courteous but when I asked a question to the lady waiter she just answered rudely and walked off to serve clientele that didn't look like us. (It felt racist). Amazing Burmese food at this place. The palatha with coconut chicken is to die for. The eggplant curry is awesome. Make sure to get the coconut jasmine rice with it. This was my first time having Burmese and was bit excited. Started with freshly cut coconut with coconut water, it was bit ok not that good. Had Tea leaf salad & loved it, it tasted soo good . Service was very friendly. As this's our first time here got no idea what to have and the lady who served our table was a great help to us. And then tried a Fish dish called Basil Chili Swai (if I'm not wrong) with a side of flavored coconut rice which was damn good. Ended up with Coconut pudding along with Pineapple ice cream. I live in the area and sauntered in one evening. I've been to some of the other more popular locations but never this one. And I must say it was a better experience that the other more crowded spots. First of all-day great service! Our server took the time to greet us, answer all questions, accommodate diet restrictions, all with a smile. Food is pretty damn good too! My favorite is the tea leaf salad. Unique mix of ingredients and 5he flavors are incredible. They bring the ingredients assembled on a platter and mix it in front of you while explaining each one- love it! Also had the hearty samosa soup and a mix vegetable entre in tomato sauce. Rangoon Ruby offers a fairly tasty [questionably Burmese] and relatively "safe" menu for the average peninsula-dwelling American who is looking to try something new without getting too far from a comfort zone full of orange chicken and California rolls. The service emulates a fine dining restaurant: waiters lay your napkin on your lap, fill your water every 30 seconds, and make plenty of nice small talk. Everyone was very pleasant, warm, and accommodating of the party's every need. The food all came out surprisingly quick but tasted fresh, implying that it wasn't fast because it was sitting in a vat, but instead was cooked quickly and efficiently! Overall, I was was impressed by the clean, upscale vibe of the place, great service, and variety of dishes over the flavor of the food itself. While I did enjoy some of the flavors, my takeaway is that this place serves as more of a suburban crowd-pleaser than a trip to Myanmar. I love Burmese food and Rangoon Ruby takes care of my cravings. I was happy to see a Burmese restaurant open up near my work in Downtown San Carlos. The restaurant is very well-decorated and the vibe is elevated with the glass sculptures on the ceiling. I have gone three times since the restaurant has opened and I have enjoyed mostly everything I have tried. Some of the items I devoured on included the coconut chicken noodle soup, the nan gyi dok, garlic noodles and pumpkin pork stew. Both the noodle soup and nan gyi dok (noodles in a coconut chicken sauce) are both really good and staples of Burmese cuisine. If you ever decide to come to Rangoon Ruby, order those two dishes and you won't be disappointed. However, the pumpkin pork stew is somewhat lacking in terms of flavor, texture and actual stew. The stew was more of a thick sauce-like consistency. The pork was not tender and I would hope the pork could be braised in the stew just a bit longer to tenderize the meat. The flavor of the stew itself is fine with nothing that stood out to me. Lots of pumpkin but not enough pork. Garlic noodles is fine but if you add some chili, it ups the noodle dish. You can either get it with duck or pork. Service is casual and quick during lunch and you can be in and out of there in an hour. I am a fan but I wished they served the rainbow salad during lunch. Okay, let's get something straight, if something is called "soup"..isn't it supposed to be soupy? Hence, the name "soup?" Well, I had the coconut noodle soup, and it was as thick as mayonnaise. Yes, it had noodles and coconut, but if I were thirsty, I would have died. The taste wasn't as good as say, Mingalaba or Burmese Superstar, but it was decent. The garlic noodles were very salty. Yikes! The mango salad was pretty good, the mango's were so thin, it looked like shredded cheese, with a citrus dressing. Then, the Burmese Eggplant Curry, yikes, it was bitter and lumpy. Best Burmese food on the Peninsula? I think so. Tasteful room and attentive service. And during covid-19 the are doing a full takeout menu with safe, efficient service. Good to see San Carlos restos busy even if we can't eat-in for now. Our fave dishes are the sesame beef and the mango chicken. And of course, sticky rice and mango dessert if they have it. How ironic that the service has finally improved, but the quality of food has gone somewhat downhill. I made reservations through Yelp, and spoke to them over the phone the day of to confirm. Our reservations were actually correct (for the first time ever!) and we were seated when we arrived. Just went there to eat lunch today. Decor is impressive, has blow glass(noodle ) on the ceiling. Very pretty for small restaurant. Ordered tea leave salad, slightly overprice $14 (for lunch salad, it is my appertizer). One strange thing is , we have 8 persons. And 20 % gratuity added, which is fine. But they add use that number to do the TAX. So it seems strange and not appropriate. They should do the TAX first and then add the 20%. Basically those lunch dishes are very small. Food quality and taste is very good (not too salty or too sweet). But the price is a little bit expensive. We have 8 persons for lunch (only one person has hot tea). NO ALCOHOL at all. It came out to be around $180 for lunch. And everyone's stomach is not full. read more

Former longtime customer but will not be going back. We had an extremely poor experience with an order they had messed up which is a sign of the ownership's approach to customer service. We had called into the San Carlos location to place an order, but when we arrived to pick it up the owner couldn't find our order. With 2 hungry kids we decided to go somewhere else, and asked for a refund. The owner said he would refund after he figured out what happened to our order. Turns out their internal system forwarded my call to their Palo Alto location so our order was there. So for the last 2 weeks we have been exchanging emails / phone calls trying to get a refund on the order. Honestly, at this point don't really care for the money, just ask please Rangoon Ruby treat your customers properly. You guys messed up and falsely accused us of calling the Palo Alto location even after we showed the owner, a manager and waiter our phone log showing that we called San Carlos. Then when you do mess up, fix it fast and go above and beyond....don't spend 2 weeks discussing with the customer how you plan to fix the problem. Just make it right with the customer and fix your internal systems / process on your own time. read more

This review is about the take-out service. I order from here relatively frequently and would normally give them 4 stars, but last night, we received one wrong dish and one that was so spicy that my husband had a coughing an sneezing fit. This is after we specified ZERO spice. Two entrees were inedible. So I called the restaurant to let them know what happened and they said because we ordered with DoorDash I should just call them. Well let's be clear here people, the issue had nothing to do with DoorDash and everything to do with the restaurant. I told the woman on the phone this, but again, ridiculous counter with essentially a "not my problem". I will not be ordering from this restaurant again. They clearly don't give a lick about customer experience if they don't want to take responsibility for a really bad experience. DoorDash did offer a reimbursement for the 2 items and did handle the complaint very professionally. Rangoon Ruby? Nope. So long Rangoon Ruby! We used to eat in the restaurant in Burlingame and order from the one in San Carlos but they will not get our business again. I understand making a mistake, but own it and offer to do something about it. It costs you a lot less to remedy one bad order than to completely lose a regular customer. And making your delivery service pay for the mistake? All I can hope for is that it came out of Rangoon Ruby's pocket. read more
