I'm a bit baffled by the negative reviews on here. I've been here three times-- I live in the north bay but try to come here whenever I take a friend to the airport and I really look forward to it. I think it's the best Burmese food I've had. I find the flavors to be unique and very interesting-- unlike anything I've ever had before anywhere. Maybe they're too unusual for some people, but I really like whatever it is they're doing. My only disappointment was a rainbow salad that I had once that had very weird flavors that I didn't like, but otherwise I've found everything I've had to be inventive and intriguing. The lemon on veggie kebat has fungus on it which was touching vegetables. The worse part was that samosa oil was completely curdled and fowl tasting. Delicious comfort food and amazing service on a cold winter night at our neighborhood location. We started off with Potstickers and egg rolls - that my teenagers devoured quickly. My son came home from college for Christmas and this was our first meal together, greeted by a very friendly staff that chatted up with us about our new puppy. We got there tonight at the perfect time on a rainy day when parking was easy and it was very warm and cozy escaping the cold. My favorite was the beef curry dish. I was determined to go to try a different Burmese restaurant, but this place was closer to where we were staying at. Our group was seated right away and we decided to share the tea leaf salad, some samosas, the monk hingar, lemongrass chicken, lamb kebat, Burmese-Indian rice, and coconut rice. This was my first time having Burmese food and their cuisine has similar flavors between Indian, Thai, and Chinese. The monk hingar is a traditional noodle soup dish that tasted interesting. I thought that the salad was very refreshing after it was mixed together. I liked the crunchy texture of the sunflower and sesame seeds. Everything else I had was alright and nothing special. The chicken and lamb entrees were a bit greasy though. Our server was a bit serious, but lightened up towards the end of the night. He made some good recommendations and I would like to experience more Burmese dishes the next time I'm in the bay area. read more

Rangoon Ruby was a top notch place once! However our recent door dash order was more than disappointing, especially considering the price. The tea leaves in the tea leaf salad seemed diluted with liquid, the tomatoes had seen better days and were on the verge of being spoiled. The lettuce wraps had a dead moth in the lettuce and the lettuce had quite a bit of disgusting slimy leaves. You get better quality from a fresh trader Joe's package! Since I'm not burmese at all and my exposure is limited I won't go to much into authenticity. Not sure what's up with the low rating but I found the food to be pretty good. I've had other burmese restaurants that gave me more of an Indian cuisine feel while this place gave me more of a Thai cuisine feel. Usually I really like this spot but I had a very disappointing recent experience. By far my favorite Burmese dish is Tea Leaf salad so one Sunday night, we ordered Burmese mainly for the salad. I ordered pickup through Doordash and drove a few towns with my whole family (including two young kids) to pickup the food. The pickup window and process was smooth. I was SO disappointed when we got home though and the Tea Leaf salad was just lettuce without any tea leaf included. I called the restaurant to let them know about the mistake and they said they'd contact Doordash and I'd have a credit that same night. The next day, still nothing so I called the restaurant again and this time they said I had to contact Doordash directly. So I contacted Doordash through the app to request the credit. It's now been over a week and Doordash still hasn't figured out the credit for my very disappointing takeout experience. I'm now hesitant to come back and to order though Doordash since my dinner was such a bummer. My three year old son still tells (and acts out) the story about how disappointed I was without the tea leaf! read more

Salads are bad. Tea leaf salad had too little tea leaves, even though we ordered extra tea leaves. The salad was 90% lettuce like your standard American salad, nothing like typical Burmese salad. Tucked in San Carlos, this place is just blocks away from Boba Guys so really you kill two birds with one stone ;) I came here for dinner on a Friday night around 7:45 and there was no wait! When I first arrived, I felt slightly underdressed since everyone was in button ups and blouses and there was voss water on tables... I ordered the tea leaf salad, fiery pork and tofu, coconut rice and samosas. Everything was really good and nothing was too spicy or too salty. The tea leaf salad was especially delicious and the fiery pork (mild) wasn't spicy at all. If anything I probably could've gone with medium spicy hehe. 2 appetizers, 1 main course and rice later the bill came out to $51 for two people. I'll definitely be back! read more

A group of four went for Sunday lunch/dinner at almost 3pm. We took the table just outside the front door which was nicely in shade on a warm sunny afternoon. The server was pleasant and attentive. The food was good too except that I thought Jasmine rice was too sticky (excuse me if it's supposed to be that way). Two of us were here for the first time and they really enjoyed all items we ordered. Parking was easy on both East and West sides of Laurel. Restrooms were clean. I ordered Rangoon Ruby for an office lunch and everyone love it. The food was great and it was so nice they provided labels with the item descriptions and dietary information. They were very easy to work with to place my order and were so helpful with the changes I made beforehand. I would definitely recommend them for a catering order. I hate to say it, even during covid, but it's just not that great. It's authentic ingredients, but they are either stale or not authentically prepared. The flavors just aren't there and feel watered-down. It's like they didn't make enough curry and they added water to try to make it last longer. We ordered: Coconut chicken curry- the chicken is pretty overcooked, even for thighs and thigh meat is forgiving. You only get a couple pieces of chicken and about 95% bland, watery, oily sauce. Rainbow salad- again, bland flavors. Not enough ingredients to offset the lettuce to special topping ratio. I did appreciate that they put the dressing in a separate container so it arrives crispy, but that's pretty much all I can say about that. Curry veggies- watery, bland sauce, not much flavor. Looks like a soup, not a curry. I do like the variety of veggies, though. It's got okra, green beans, cabbage, and more. Tea leaf salad- the tea leaf is more oil than tea leaf. I know this is oil based, but the bulk should be the fermented tea leaves with oil, not oil with tea leaf that's pretty disintegrated. Today it was so, so salty! Lemongrass pork- the portion of meat was actually nice with some sweet bell pepper accents, but I did not taste any lemongrass at all. This tasted more like a bland, oyster and soy sauce base. No evidence of lemongrass what so ever. Lettuce wraps with chicken- this was ok. Plenty of lettuce to eat with the filling, ample filling. The brown hoisin sauce condiment was completely overpowered with salt. So much salt! I even called the restaurant to let them know that the hoisin was horribly salty, not sweet and flavorful. Nan Gyi-Dok- this was basic. Since they use the watered down coconut chicken curry as the base for the flavor, I'm pretty sure you can guess that flavor was also lacking with this one, too. I appreciated that they put extra toppings to the side so you can see that they are there, but they don't help the flavor at all. I won't be going back. Inexcusable that when ordering a samosa salad, that it not only comes partially full, but only has a tiny piece (one piece!) of samosa in it. For a $20 salad that is crazy. We enjoy the taste of the food at this restaurant and we've ordered their food many times. Lately it seems like their portions are getting smaller despite the price being the same as before, or in some cases even going up. I can't understand that rationale, if the price is the same or higher then the amount of food you are receiving should be consistent. We also ordered a samosa appetizer - while quite tasty, this also arrived with less food than before even though the price is the same. This appetizer used to come with 4 samosas, now it comes with 3..?! How am I receiving 25% less food for the appetizer samosa, and even less for the samosa salad. I'm leaving this review up until a manager contacts me to explain and make it right. Again, food quality was good, we like this restaurant (usually) and the food is tasty. I think the take out experience may not be as good as the dine in experience. Have always loved the tea leaf salad but it was subpar for take out. The lentils and fried garlic were soft even though we ate it almost right away after pick up. The chicken kebat was 70% onions (see pic), but was tasty. Wish there was more chicken in the dish. I'm so disappointed that the Burlingame location closed down because it was such a convenient location for me. The closest Rangoon Ruby is now the San Carlos location. I've only visited once and it was a bitter disappointment. I placed an order to-go and specifically requested no shrimp powder on my tea leaf salads. I was surprised when I opened the containers and discovered shrimp powder sprinkled on both salads. My receipt even noted that they were to be made vegan. Had the shrimp powder been in a separate container, the salad would have probably been salvageable. If I were to order again, I would probably take the extra time to check my order instead of assuming everything was made correctly. read more

We got there and the guy (waiter/bartender/hostess) couldn't find our reservation and told us to sit wherever we want. No greeting! No smile! Just a grumpy man! I was a bit irritated since I put in my reservation that we were celebrating a birthday and was hoping for at least a "happy birthday". The waiter never smiled and was cold the entire time we were there. He wasn't happy to be there and it was obvious! The food was meh to be honest! This is not my first time to eat Burmese food...I know the food can be more flavorful! The portions are small and very expensive in my opinion. I'm a 20%+ tipper but I just couldn't tonight. Went here Friday night because my favorite restaurant was closed. Ordered lettuce wraps with chicken it was good but the portion of filling/meat is so small. Ordered vegetarian eggrolls the kind you get frozen at Costco taste way better and good quality. Ordered the mango salad, don't know why they call it hat very little mango which is shredded and it has more garlic chips in there than mangoes. The dressing tastes like oil. I went to this restaurant last Thursday with my co- workers. We wanted to do something different. We picked Burmese food. I have only gone to one other Burmese restaurant and that was like 10 yrs ago. That time I was by myself and only tried one item. We had two appetizers: Samosas and palatas We ordered a tea leave salad and a spicy, mint chicken entree, two glasses of complimentary water, which tasted like cucumber, that was actually nice and one person ordered a Coke. We ordered a side of rice but the portion was small so we had to order another one , still didn't feel like enough but we left it at that. We had a banana dessert with ice cream. It was good. I thought the food had good presentation and I thought it was good. My co-workers mentioned that they thought the tea leave salads they have had at other restaurants had more tea leaves and less lettuce, so they liked it at the other restaurants better. I had nothing to compare it to, so I was not sure. It had a fancy feel. The three of us went at 1:30pm. There were no customers, a few more customers arrived later. The server was low key but polite. He also got our order correct. I thought it was very expensive. We split the bill evenly among the three of us, so I paid $44. That seemed excessive, so if I ever come back I will not do family style. I'm still in sticker shock over it. My fault I should've looked at the receipt and maybe we should've skipped the dessert. The dessert was good, but it made the bill even higher for a lunch meal. I wouldn't mind coming back and giving it another try, but this might be a restaurant more conducive for groups than one person. I will review the menu beforehand and decide. Went on a lunch with a few coworkers and stumbled across this place. One of my coworkers have previously been to it and liked it so we all decided to give it a try. Restaurant was not packed as it was a weekday in the middle of the day. Took a bit long to get seated given it was not busy, and the hostess that took us to our table did not seem the friendliest. Nonetheless our waiter made up for this. He was very nice and we were able to joke around with him while ordering. This was first time having Burmese food and it was pretty good. We ordered Samosas as appetizers and they were very good! They were mini turnovers filled with a potato like substance with their house sauce. The house sauce was so good! I put it on every dish I had. I ordered the garlic noodles with pork and it reminded me of Pad Thai with less spices and thinner noodles. We also ordered 3 Singha beers for only $3.50 - can't beat that price! Parking can be a little tough as it is downtown San Carlos but you can find a small lot down the street if you are willing to walk.
