Although when I explained it was my first time trying Burmese food; rather than give me an idea of what to expect the waiter suggested three separate dishes. This is a long over due review. I barely leave a review on Yelp so if I do, it's legit. I dined several times in RR San Carlos but now stop coming here. Since I still love their foods( tea leaf salad+ signature chicken lettuce wrap), I ordered the foods occasionally by doordash or ubereats. Their foods are made of quality ingredients and by skilled chef. However the service! Not only it takes time to serve but also the owner M oftentimes is cold, not inviting and I felt even discriminated last time. She said Happy Holidays to the gentle man front of me but didn't even be bothered to say bye to me. I hope the service getting better since we are not having dinner in a restaurant only for foods. People want to enjoy ambiance and services as well. Other than its mediocre service, its location, ambiance and foods quality are great. After eating here, I feel the same way about Rangoon Ruby's food - it's not even bad. Qualifying for 'bad' would imply that there was some attempt at introducing flavor to the food but that the effort had been misguided. The food here is simply bland. We had the chicken kebat, the pumpkin chicken stew, and the garlic noodle with BBQ pork. After finishing our meal, the only flavor that I remembered was from the BBQ pork, which tasted like day-old Play-doh. For all I know, the rest of the meal was oatmeal pressed into forms and dyed to look like chicken, noodles, and pumpkin. For a meal that cost $50, I expected more. read more

Sad to have to report that after several visits over the last 2/3 years we went there for lunch, December 4th and found the salmon with lemongrass and Burmese pork curry bland and uninteresting. The restaurant that had always been full was almost deserted so perhaps we're not alone in noticing its decline. Ridiculously expensive for value offered too. read more

They offer customizable levels of spice for some dishes to fit each persons spice level. They were able to fit in a walk in table for two on a busy friday night with only a short wait. read more

My first experience with Burmese food at Rangoon Ruby's was definitely a hit! I was with a group for lunch today and we called as we approached the restaurant and they held a table for our arrival. At first glance, the restaurant looked a bit fancy but the service was friendly and food arrived quickly at our table and we were made to feel right at ease, even though we had two small children dining with our group. I enjoyed my lunch of chicken stew and a side of coconut rice was the perfect accompaniment for the meal. Their samosa appetizers were spot on, according to others in the group who had experienced Burmese food and the cucumber water that was served with the meal was a refreshing change from plain water. I don't know what they could have done better to satisfy us for lunch! I even left with a take home bag that I will definitely enjoy tomorrow! read more

Delicious food and great service. This restaurant is somewhat of a Burmese-Indian fusion. You can see from their menu there are some Indian inspired dishes. Have a coconut drink to take your dining experience more authentic. I recommend reserving your spot because they get busy pretty quick. read more

Always consistently good. It's been one of our favorite restaurants on the Peninsula and even better than Burma Superstar in the Bay area.

The menu is extensive and well represents Rangoon, Burmese food. Staff are very friendly and the space was newly remodeled for their grand opening. Bright, airy. They have opened their second shop in San Carlos, it was pretty much identical to the Palo Alto one. The tea leaf salad was good, as expected. All meals were served family style, so it is very easy to share food items. Among all the items I tried, I recommend the mango chicken. I've never had Burmese food before. We went to celebrate the birthday of a Burmese friend and he indicated it was quite authentic. I went here for lunch with a friend mid-week. The restaurant wasn't very crowded for lunch on a Wednesday but I would still recommend reservations. The dishes are definitely shareable. I would recommend the tea leaf salad and the pork curry with coconut rice - both very delicious and different! I would not recommend getting a soda - it was $3.50 for a Coke and I wasn't asked if I wanted a refill. The water is cucumber flavored which was nice. I would definitely recommend this as a lunch spot for anyone looking for one in San Carlos! Also, huge parking lot behind the restaurant is a plus :) read more

I had the pumpkin pork stew, which was delicious. The coconut rice was also very good. My lunch date had the mango chicken salad and although I didn't try any, it looked amazing and she said it was great. Great service, and we sat outside which was nice. After 2 years, I visited this place again with team. As before, ambiance is good. Not very large place but decent size compared to downtown. If you are going with a group (4+ people), then I will recommend for reservation. Food ... overall food is good. However I couldn't see "Burmese" flavor. Most of the dishes are customized similar to Thai or Indian flavor. Tea Leaf Salad is still the best. This time we tried mango salad which was also pretty good. Other than these two specialty dishes, most of the dishes are okay and similar to any thai/asian restaurant. Samosa are not that great. I feel that they must have some frozen items. Not impressed with Vegetarian choices. Mango chicken was okay but it was customized for American taste. I was expecting authentic Burmese dishes. We also order coconut water. Generally restaurant staff offers help to take out coconut after drinking water. Here the staff didn't care about it. They just took the coconut and threw in garbage.:( Overall not bad but nothing great. If you are in that area, you can try out. For authentic Burmese, there are other choices in bay area. read more

Tonight I used Rangoon Ruby Catering for a company event I held at my house. I had staff and management from all over the Americas: US, Canada and Mexico at the event. I cannot sing the praises highly enough. I know, this is a Yelp review and I am supposed to be objective...but in no uncertain terms cannot I find anything to be negative about. From my initial contact, to the menu consultation, to the delivery and setup, to the quality of the cuisine, the staff at Rangoon Ruby in San Carlos WAY over exceeded any expectation I held. They helped me turn an awkward team building event to a very special and memorable personal connection evening with my management. They delivered actually a bit early with 9 dishes. Everything from the Tea Leaf Salad to Sambosa to Pumpkin Chicken Stew to Yellow Tofu Curry to Sesame Beef and more was better than I could have expected. Tea leaf salad was good. Our waiter was rude. When he asked us how our food was, and we told him that all the dishes were good except one chicken dish we ordered that was too salty, he ran into the kitchen and came back out to tell us that he consulted the chef and they use a soy paste and that's why we think it's salty but that's how the dish is. This argument was rude and stupid, because what gives soy sauce or paste the saltiness? That's right... Salt. He was telling us that our opinion was wrong, with a dumb argument. read more

I am writing this review for the manager, Sara, who helped us with our uber eats order on Friday night. We placed an order with uber eats and ordered over $140 worth of food only to realize right after placing the order that it was for the wrong delivery address. I immediately canceled the order and called Uber but Uber eats wouldn't refund the money saying the restaurant had already processed the order and they couldn't take it back. So I called the restaurant to at least see if we could come pick up the food since they don't deliver to our house and found out the restaurant hadn't even received the order yet since I had cancelled so quickly. (So I guess the money was going to go straight to uber eats' pockets) Sara went out of her way on a busy Friday night to call Uber for us and help us get the money refunded. She spent at least half an hour on the phone with us and Uber, again, on a busy Friday night during the holidays! Thank you so much for helping us Sara! It's so rare to have someone go out of their way for you when they clearly don't have to. She deserves a raise or at least a reward!! :) Oh, and we love Rangoon Ruby food too, by the way! read more

Had lunch with colleagues. We are a 8 person party and made a reservation. The restaurant is very clean and ambience is modern and nice. Services were very well and VERY attentive and polite. The food are light comparing with other similar cuisines. Never too much sauce or sweetness. everything is just about right. The tea leaves salad is special as you do see a lot of tea leaves on the top. The server brought the dish and all ingredients were arranged beautifully. Then she mixed everything on the spot. I was a bit disappointed that you did see a lot of tea leaves but there was no flavor of tea at all. So essentially, those leaves just tasted as one kind of vegetable. With the $14 steep price for a salad, you do feel at least it should taste special. We ordered some lunch special entries to share. Mango chicken, Pumpkin pork stew, Walnut Shrimp and Eggplant curries. All tasted light and nice. On one hand you feel this is healthy, however, on the other hand, you will not remember or miss too much afterward. We order three desserts to share, surprised to see they all came with one scoop of ice cream although in different flavor. Two of them came with banana (fried and not fried). Although the sweet sticky rice tasted good, I do feel all deserts are sort of one note. One other thing is that they added 20% surcharge gratuity for party of 8 for more. This is a bit steep compared with other places. Something odd is that they also add tax on top of the tip which is unusual as most of the time you pay tax for food and add tip afterward. I've been to Rangoon Ruby in PA previously and did not think it was great, but gave the San Carlos location a try on Christmas eve as there were not a lot of options on Christmas eve in San Carlos. First impression was the ambience was much more upscale and brighter than the PA location. We had the Pad Thai, Garlic Noodles, Sesame Beef, and the Fiery Tofu. All were tasty (although a bit on the salty side for Asian taste buds), but my fave was the Pad Thai-just enough spices and tanginess, plus just the right amount of sauce. I hate my Pad Thai dry and/or mushy...this was neither. Definitely recommend if you are looking for an Asian option in SC. read more

The Tea Leaf Salad is phenomenal! This would be something to drive a really far distance out of your way to get - yes it is that good! The Garlic noodles are very yummy as well. The hostess acted like she was doing me a big favor in seating our group without a reservation one night, even though there were several open tables available.
