We usually go to El Loro but this was right around the corner so I figured we should try it. There's another rancho grande that I've been to and thier food is good. We got seated immediately but our server was nowhere to be found, it didn't seem super busy and there were a few tables around us but it took 10 minutes before someone came by to take our order. Our waitress seemed like she hated her job, just asked if we were ready to order with a blank expression. I ordered the fajitas texana to share with my son. The shrimp was overcooked and tiny, the steak was tough and the chicken, well.. it's chicken. No distinctive Mexican flavors, I thought this was a Mexican restaurant? Our original server never came to check on us, I guess we came during a shift change. I had to ask for refills and napkins from another waiter who turned out to be our new server (but I guess he didn't realize he had the table?). Had to wave down the waitress just to ask for the checks and some to go boxes. Was very dead for a Saturday night so not sure for the lack of work ethics. Solid Mexican restaurant. 2 doors down from the UPS store and I am usually at the UPS Store 3/4 days out of the week, so it's convenient to grab lunch here. I'm a fan of the tacos, taco salad, fajitas and enchiladas. The menu is HUGE!! The prices are similar to other Mexican restaurants in the area. I usually carry out, so I can't speak to actual waiter/waitress tableside service, but everyone that I have spoken to on the phone has been polite, especially since I like my food prepared a certain way (take off this, add that, extra cheese, sauce on the side, extra sour cream, etc) and the cashier has always been polite as well. The food was good, just not fantastic. The portions were okay, just not fantastic. Our server was good, but overly attentive and checked on us probably 10 times while we are trying to stuff or faces. Boil it down to this: Yes, I would definitely go back and eat at Rancho Grande 2 if I was in the area, but there are better Mexican options if you have time to drive a little farther. I have nothing really negative to say about Rancho Grande. It was pleasant enough. It just didn't amaze us...didn't make our kids moan with joy like a recent Mexican restaurant did (see my other reviews). When we go to a restaurant and spend hard-earned money, we want and expect WOW! AMAZING! What we got was: Good, decent, but....Meh. I got the $15 "Special Dinner - A Little of Everything" because I was starving and it READ like it was much bigger (and 60% more expensive) than their biggest dinner combo. Well my wife and older son's dishes, which were cheaper, were bigger portions. My chili relano was tiny. The enchiladas were thin and flat. Taco was good. Chalupa was okay. Everything tasted GOOD, but pretty small. That said, my wife and son's portions were proper. And the two little one's kids meals were proper portions. I got the same amount of rice and beans as they did. Go figure. My son got the Yolandas and said they were great and the chicken was really tasty. He was looking forward to alot of Mole sauce on it, but the 3 yolandas shared probably 1.5 tablespoons of Mole sauce. Should have been more. Barely could taste it. Still, he liked his dish. Wife got the chicken and shrimp. It was very flavorful, well presented and cooked. Chicken was extra good. Portion was a little lacking, but not bad at all. Certainly much bigger than my rumored big dish :) They were very generous with chips and salsa. We were a table of 5 and they brought out 2 baskets of chips and later refilled with another 2 baskets. Their salsa was tasty and right. They were generous with their drink refills, too. So to review, we thought Rancho Grande 2 was GOOD, but not fantastic. Portions could be a little more generous. Definitely worth checking out, but you can do better elsewhere. When will restaurants learn that it never really saves them money to short patrons on their portions in the long run, because they won't remain faithful? Long time ago we had a family restaurant and learned that giving big portions costs hardly any more, but makes solid, loyal customers that will brag and praise it to others.........Its a win-win. read more

Lunch chicken chimichanga, chicken burrito and two Texas margaritas with Grand Marnier upgrade (the GM came on the side in shot glasses). Service was fast. Food was yum. Margaritas were cha-cha-cha! Our server was also above and beyond friendly and on top of things. This place also serves both the red and white salsas for their complimentary chips and dip. Our return is definite. read more

A little UYE action after a very successful, fun, and heartwarming a Elite Event this evening. I took care of the staff and photographer tonight and joined a few of our guests for dinner since we munched on cupcakes for a couple of hours. The place was dead but that's because it was 9:30 and they close at 10. Like any Mexican spot, service was quick. A few folks enjoyed a margarita. I ordered the steak ranchero. It's my usual choice. It was a steak topped with onions and peppers served with beans and rice. While I liked that my meal wasn't heavy, I found the steak to be a little small. Not to be funny but my girlfriend thought the same thing, too. (That's what she said moment?) And there I shall end this review. read more

Rancho Grande used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the area, so I was pretty disappointed with this visit. We were seated immediately upon arrival and brought drinks and chips right away. I did have to ask for the queso dip, which most places usually bring it out right away. I ordered a margarita after being told they had no mixes available for mojitos. I've never had a problem ordering a drink at a Mexican restaurant before so I was pretty bummed they were out of whatever they needed to make a mojito. After glancing over the menu, I noticed they changed it around a lot. The main reason I wanted to come to Rancho Grande was for their shrimp quesadillas, which I loved. It was no longer on the menu, but the waiter said I could substitute the meat in the quesadilla grande for shrimp. I feel like they need to change their menu to make sure they have all options available to make it easier to order. My boyfriend ordered shrimp tacos, which was also not on the menu, and a chicken tamale. I also ordered fresh guacamole because they make it very delicious, but I never got that. The food was mediocre, and pretty disappointing because it used to be so delicious. Rancho Grande needs to pick up on their service and quality of food before I plan on coming back. read more

I called and ordered take out. This was my first experience eating food from this restaurant. It was recommended by a family member that is acquainted with the owners. My ordering experience kind of put me off, but I went through with the order anyway just to see if maybe the food was worth it. I ordered two taco salads with beef tips and no onions. We also ordered without beans. The guy taking the order told us that the meal came with chips, salsa, and white sauce when I asked to order some. I asked what his name was to know who I placed my order with. He didn't feel it was necessary to give it to me and didn't. However, I suspect his name was Alberto when he referenced that name while telling me that if Alberto wasn't there to give us the order, anyone could. After placing the order, he said it would be ready when we got there. I asked him if he wanted our name for the order and instead of just responding politely with a simple no, he told me not to worry that no one was going to take our food as though that were the purpose of taking a name for an order. Call me old school, but good manners haven't yet gone out of style and he sure didn't have them. My husband is from Southern California so he is a Mexican food enthusiast. When he brought it home, I checked the salad and was surprised that the meat didn't have any seasoning on it. My husband took a bite as well and wasn't impressed. The beef was bland. It didn't even taste salted. The salad order was correct (with the exception of the lime I requested) and it tasted freshly prepared, but it was lacking in flavor. I quickly dashed to the pantry and refrigerator for hot sauce and jalapeños to doctor it up some. My husband said the best part of the taco salad was the hot peppers that I added. o_0 The chips that came with the meal were good. They tasted fresh and were fried in new oil unlike many restaurants. The salsa was good; however, the white sauce was just average. I asked my husband to rate it on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest. He hesitated and gave it a 2 1/2. I decided to give it a 3 since the food did taste freshly prepared. Just a quick note though, when I asked if I could get the guacamole prepared without onions, I was told that it was already prepared with onions, so no, I could not. My family member told me otherwise, so perhaps they pick and choose who they will prepare special orders for. Obviously I was not one of those people. Will I be going back? No. Would I recommend them to others? I don't think so. There are a handful of places in the same vicinity that offer better hospitality and have much tastier food. One last thing, the prices are reasonable. Still, I'm always willing to pay more for good food and good service. Also, hospitality goes a long way. read more

We were seated. Took forever just to get chips, white sauce- tasteless, and salsa, which was bland tasting. The guy finally came after about 15 minutes and he barely spoke English. Our order was all mixed up, and took another 10 minutes to get the parts we were missing! Then 15 more minutes to get our check. The lady at the register said they were short staffed due to people taking breaks! Breaks are a gift, not required by law. And if they were that busy I would have stooped breaks. All and all it is a "one and done" as we don't have to go back, lots of other choices close by! read more

I used to lunch here fairly often when I worked out of an office nearby. Service was always quick and friendly. I rarely had to wait long even though they got pretty busy at noon. Food was hot, fresh and inexpensive. Is it the best Mexican food I have ever had - no. But it's a solid place for a quick lunch. Tableside guacamole is pretty good with chunks of avocado, onion, tomato - with just the right amount of cilantro and spice. I also enjoyed the fajita nachos - plenty of chicken, onions, peppers and cheese. The chicken had a great grilled flavor and was juicy and tender. Portion was too large for me to finish. Chorizo dip was cheesy and full of flavor (I love chorizo), but a bit on the greasy side. The fajita salad is not for dieters - more fajita than salad and the greens at the bottom tended toward soggy. The chile relleno is what you would expect - not too spicy, very cheesy. On occasion, I have tried their margaritas (tending towards the more top shelf variety). Sometimes they are quite good, others not so much. Seemed like the sour mix had an off taste at times. If you are looking for a quick lunch that's inexpensive and offers typical Mexican fare, this is a solid choice. read more

Ok, I'm writing this IN THE RESTAURANT. I've been here before for takeout and overall the food wasn't too bad. I'm from California, and us Californians are very particular about our Mexican food. If I'm looking for Mexican food, no offense, but I look for a fellow Californian's word on the matter. That being said, Rancho Grande's food quality is very good, but the flavor is lacking. I tried adding Tapatio, salsa, pepper... I just can't put my finger on it. It's subtle, but evident. Another thing I noticed, anything witch cheese on it is VERY cheesy. For some, this is a plus, but it's a little overpowering. I had the #1 combo - a ground beef taco, two enchiladas, and rice or beans - and throughout the meal, these two points kept coming back. Even a taste of my wife's fajita plate lacked the flavor I was looking for. Anyway, service was pretty good... and the bill was under $20 for a small but filling lunch with my wife. Whenever I go there I get the soft shrimp tacos and they are hands down my favorite food! The service is great and I love how the owner walks around asking how we are doing. Four stars for one reason and one reason only: I will likely never come here again. I've been going to this location since it opened. I was in 4th grade and going here and to target across the street with my parents almost every Thursday. Never have I had a horrible experience here (I'm 20 years old now and a line cook myself) Fast forward a few years and you have two adults and two children with upset stomachs. The kids always get stomach aches after coming here and usually my mom does too but never me. But here we are, an hour later with an upset stomach. Am I saying it's food poisoning? No. Am I saying they got me sick? No. But I am saying that they have changed something about their purveyor and we can no longer handle their food. Hopefully you can because I think it's worth it! Three hints: get cheese enchiladas instead of beef, put lettuce in the beans, and put white salsa on the tacos. Makes everything better. read more

As a former 7-year resident of Southern California, I can honestly saw that Rancho Grande 2 is serving authentic Mexican cuisine. Well, maybe cuisine is a bit much, but this food is pretty good. You always a judge a Mexican restaurant by the quality of their tortilla chips and dip. Here, you'll receive tortillas fried in-house with a side of mild salsa and a white sauce that's specific to Virginia Beach-area Mexican restaurants only. It's hard to put a finger on the flavor, think aioli on this. The food is fresh. Burritos, carne asada, and carnitas dishes are all winners. Seating is plentiful whether you're in a large group or on a date. I suggest sitting at the bar. There's a tv and service will be much more attentive that anywhere else in the restaurant. Mexican food is pretty standard but it's close quick and delicious. We've definitely had worse and it's one of the better Mexican places (in our opinion) we've been to locally. The only down side was the few times we've been and they have had really loud Spanish techno and we left as it was deafening. read more

Service easily handled our table of 14+ at Sunday lunch time and seemed to do so with a good attitude. We ran 'em ragged with all the refills on chips and drinks, but they kept up pretty well! What can I say, I like Mexican for lunch. The proximity to my office is great, it is good quality food, from the basic Speedy Gonzales, to those delicious sizzling fajitas!! Based on being there at other times, it seems lots of folks enjoy their happy hour as well. Not going to waste a lot of words on it, but I do highly recommend a visit. We've been here on several occasions, todays visit was a complete disappointment. My husband ordered paradilla (I probably got that wrong, but it's something like that). The salt level was unbearable (probably from the chorizo). The chicken was dry, the pork was drier the shrimp was over cooked (rubbery) but the steak was o.k. It's hard for them to get the rice & beans wrong, do we'll give them that. Lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole & sour cream....let's face it...it is what it is. My meal...flautas. The meal comes with (2) chicken and (2) beef. The description should read....2, 2, 2 & 2. Meaning (2) chicken flautas with 2 pieces of chicken, (2) beef flautas with 2 pieces of beef. Yes, that's right....2 pieces of meat in each flautas, so basically you are eating 4 pieces of corn tortillas. If that's what you're looking for??? Order this....quickly! If not, look for something else or you will be disappointed. I can't describe the taste of the meat as all I tasted was the corn tortilla. I will probably come back because we like table side guacamole. If I do, I'll probably stick with the chimichanga unless the screw that up too. My husband likes to try new things every time we go to restaurants....so we'll see if he finds something good. Once he tried shrimp Diablo here & once again the shrimp were way over cooked and the sauce was disgusting, so he knows to stay away from that item. Thankfully, we have many many choices of Mexican restaurants to choose from. Our favorite by far is 3 amigos! That's right...I said it . Really not sure why I don't learn from my mistakes. First mistake, I didn't refer to yelp before eating here. Hub wanted to go to Einstein and I said no I want Mexican. Second mistake. First off, I've never been to Mexican restaurant that makes you choose between beans or rice for about half of their combos/plates. And I've also never seen combos say cheese only. No choice of beef or chicken?! Insanity. Hub got enchiladas rancheros. With only rice. He ate about half and said not worth the calories. He never only eats half of anything. He usually inhales every crumb, and finishes my food. I tried a bite of his enchiladas and all I tasted was processed cheese. I'm a cheese snob and HATE kraft cheese. With a passion. I got the burrito, taco, and rice lunch special. With no beans. *major eye roll* the rice was bland. The taco was about the quality of Taco Bell. The burrito was decent with an ok ranchero sauce. Terrible service, awful food! Had a girls night there, and our food was terrible. We sent it back, after a couple bites, and they refused to comp the uneaten food. Instead, the male checking us out, argued with us, accused my friend of eating her entire meal- WHEN SHE DID NOT!, asked us why we didnt take pictures to PROVE it?!, argued about the quality of the food, etc. Our sever checked on us 3 times... To take our orders, bring our food, and bring the check. I ended up paying for our awful, UNEATEN meals bc I was embarassed of the argumantive accusatory loud tone from the guy checking us out and just wanted him to stop yelling at as and making a scene, like WE were in the wrong! Went to pay and stood at the register to pay for several minutes and no one came. Asked the hostess and she said "someone will Be with you honey ". So I waited a little longer. Busboy came up to give another client her to go food and said "someone will be right with you". Waited longer. Finally asked the hostess again and she said no one else has the password to run the register so "you will just have to wait". By this time my husband and I were both agitated. One chicken breast mashed with a fork for $12.99, and overpriced kids meals. I won't be recommending this to anyone. This is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of Hampton Roads. I have ate at nearly every other Mexican place between the Oceanfront to the Peninsula and still this place is the best I've found. The staff are so friendly and nice and the food is always consistent and delicious. I have been coming here since moving to the area in 2010 and have enjoyed every single thing I have ever ordered. This place is clean, fast, and friendly you really couldn't ask for anything more. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a fantastic place to eat!
