This is a little hidden spot at the corner of what used to be the old Kmart at VB Town Center. It has become my daughter and my favorite local Mexican restaurant. The prices are right and the food never disappoints! We were greeted and seated immediately upon arriving, just as always. Chips and salsa were immediately served; we had to ask for the white sauce. Our server was ready to take our order when we were ready to give it. My daughter ordered the Baja Shrimp Tacos. She was in love with those tacos, so much so that she almost ate herself into a little food coma . She did say the rice was a little salty, but she tore it up nonetheless. I ordered Lunch 18, a beef and cheese tostada, a chicken and cheese quesadilla, and rice (or beans...I was a little sad when I learned that I misread the menu because I thought I was getting both a little rice and beans ). Like my daughter, I tore my plate up, too . The flavor was definitely there! I agreed with my daughter about the rice being a little salty, but it was still very good! The quesadilla was LOADED with pi pulled chicken and cheese and had my taste buds dancing! Outside of having to ask for a water refill and napkins, this was an awesome lunch. You can't go wrong here if you are looking for fast and your typical mexican fare. It's good and fast. Chips are fresh, salsa is good. We got the fajitas which was enough for the 2 of us without getting the dreaded food coma. It's clean, plenty of parking since it's in a shopping plaza. I went with a friend to lunch. When we arrived we got a table right away. They even accommodated my friends request to sit in a different area. Our server was very nice and helpful. She made us feel welcomed. I ordered the shrimp chimichangas and my friend had the chicken fajitas. The fajitas came out piping hot and looked good. My friend enjoyed them. My shrimp tacos were covered in cheese and were tasty. The shrimp was very scarce though. It seemed like they took 3 shrimp and chopped them into pieces and filled the rest in with onions and peppers. I just would have appreciated more meat. The salsa was very loose. It was actually hard to scoop onto the chips. It tasted ok, but was slightly bland. The waitress was nice and brought us some extra because it was hard to share the small amount we were given at first. I do wish they offered rice and beans with the meal, but unfortunately you only get one or the other. Also their menu gives a description, but not enough info. The waitress kept looking at the menu but it didn't show how many or everything that came with each item. So it was a bit confusing. Several people came by and asked if everything was ok. The staff was friendly. The restaurant has an authentic Mexican vibe and colorful decor. There's plenty of seating and 2 sides to the restaurant. So it seems good for groups. i give it a 2 only because the food was great but the aftermath was much much worse after around 20 mins at most i felt a small grumble in my lower abdomin before what was once a meal was now a muticorse bomb getting ready to explode as it was gripping my anus like small demons begging to be freed i kept my checks clentched as to not release hell that was not ready yet little did i know the agony had just began the sickening gurgles got louder as the demons that i had consumed were getting digested and trying to force their freedom once i had thought the worsest was over for i was staying with someone after this meal i was unable to get somewhere i could release the liquid hell i had kept in but i caved and made my momentary exit but little did i know it was a toxic smelling gas that would be the first wave of this attack as the liquid hell slid like a demon landslide i began to belive it was it was over as i finished i left only to feel hell being set lose once again next thing i know that gas was returning to haunt me for many hours before this hellish thing once called a meal finnaly passed i am relieved it was over but this places food is not for anyone who is not ready for the pain about to take over their lower abdomin i wish you all luck eating here -caturone read more

My friend brought me here, she loves their tamales. There tamales are served with an enchilada sauce and I wasn't sure if I would like them so I got the beef flautas. I asked for hotter salsa and they brought em the house hot sauce which was great!! The flauatas were great! I thought they were going to be ground beef and was pleasantly surprised that they were a shredded beef. The queso & guacamole that come with it are great additions. The beans and rice were good too. I got tamales to go for my fiancé and he really enjoyed them. It's also great they included a bag of chips & salsa with my to go order. I'll try them next time!! I met my best friends here for dinner and drinks. I was very impressed by my meal, which was the vegetarian enchiladas meal. Came with a potato, bean, and cheese enchilada smothered in sauce that was so yummy! It was served with rice and salad. I can't remember the last time I finished an entire meal at a restaurant so this was a really big hit in my opinion. We got a few drinks and they were yummy, nothing crazy. I got the lunch number two off their lunch menu, which is a value meal found out that they now only give you a half a bag of chips with their salsa and white sauce, it came with a burrito beans and fries. We have gone to this amazing restaurant several times. Yes the chips and white sauce are delicious but don't fill on that, the entrees are unbeatable and the portions are generous. My partner's sister (one of my best friends) and I stopped by during a day of running errands once we realized we were getting peckish. I didn't even realize this place was over here, but apparently they've been in business for years! Service was okay - we were not given napkins, and I realized we weren't given utensils either, so I kept having to ask for things that are usually a given at a sit-down restaurant. They also did not have fresh lemonade as listed on their menu. However, our waitress was nice and the food came out quickly, besides chips which they didn't refill during our lunch. We ordered a bean dip to share, which was delicious and perfectly cheesy. It was a pretty large portion, so there was plenty to take home. My friend likes to stick to the classic a la carte items. She got two crunchy beef tacos and a soft chicken taco (the latter not pictured just because it was served in foil as typical for a la carte). She has been coming here for years, so clearly she enjoys her meal every time. She knows all the best spots for food, so I can always trust her to make a great pick. El Azteca clearly knows what they're doing! I really liked my shrimp quesadilla. Loaded with shrimp, peppers, onions, and delicious cheese. I pretty much always go for a shrimp quesadilla for Mexican food, and El Azteca definitely did it right. It may be better than any other I've tried. The quesadilla was also very large. There were so many shrimp, rather than being mostly veggies for filler. Wonderful!! I realized I should've taken a better picture after, lol, but I was hungry. We were too full for dessert, but I'll try it next time. They have cheesecake.. Definitely hit up El Azteca if you're in the area and craving some Mexican food!! El Azteca is the hidden Mexican Restaurant gem that hides outside the Virginia Beach Town Center. They are located besides Amplitude Karaoke to the left. The door will be on the corner. I love coming to this place because they have competitive prices compared to other Mexican Restaurants in the area and they give you more servings too. This place gives you the typical Mexican Restaurant feel when you come in. They have a hostess that would seat you and their wait staff are very nice and they will tske good care of you. They have awesome Happy Hours with their maragaritas. This is a definite plus. It is from 4:30 to 9:00pm Sunday - Thursday. Mind you, they are generous with their tequila, so dont say I didnt warn you. The different food specials are different each day, check that out when you first walk in. This is one of my go to mexi places in Town Center VB! Food & service is always on point, I've never been disappointed. I was welcomed in and sat down quickly. My server was there soon as I sat down. I started off with a Lime Margarita of course. I felt like it was a little more sour than usual margaritas, I could barely taste the tequila. I noticed a machine by the bar that had something already premade, if that is what they used for the margaritas. I prefer mine made on the spot in all honestly. For my entree I ordered the lunch portion Steak Fajitas and as usual it came out sizzlin hot and was so so good, I finished the whole plate! Then for dessert I ordered the Churros and the Fried ice cream! I guess I was indulging this day ha. BUT if you ever have room for dessert definitely get the Fried Icecream, it was enough to share. The churros were delcious as well a bit sweet for me . It came with a caramel dip sauce which was really good. I ate the churros with icecream and did not regret it! Over priced for what you get. Most plates do not include rice and beans, even though the photos show the plates having rice and beans. My chalupa came smothered in res sauce and was soggy. I have never seen a chalupa smothered before. Defeats the point of being a crispy chalupa. Liked the atmosphere but service was minimal basic. I had the Mojarra Frita(whole fried tilapia with mayo salad & rice) and I couldn't finish it because it was quite large. I like this place because it's low key and they have great tasting food - chori pollo was yum. The prices are affordable, and it's always easy to be seated right away. The food is fast without lacking quality. It's not too noisy and you can hold a conversation. The only thing I'm not a fan of- depending on the situation is when they don't ask if you would like to order anything else or dessert. If you're in a rush than of course this is a situation where it serves helpful. Of course, and I can always just let them know I'd like to order dessert even if they give me the bill already. They give you the bill and you bring it to the cash register to pay. They can separate it your bill if you're in a group when you go to pay. read more

Mexican lunch today for the win. There isn't much more you can ask for on a cold rainy day than for some hot Mexican. El Azteca, you delivered. I almost went with my usual steak meal but decided to switch it up and go with Tacos de Carne Asada. It was three soft corn tortillas served with pico de gallo, tomatillo sauce and beans. This was certainly new for me but I really liked my choice. The beef was tender and the pico de gallo was a nice add on. Of course, I had to order rice on the side. Note: a side of rice is one helluva serving. Overall, a high three star meal. This place may be tough to find. It's not along the busy Virginia Beach Blvd. KMart certainly isn't bringing them any foot traffic. Go off the beaten path, the opposite side of Target or where Kohl's is at Pembroke Mall and you'll find this spot. read more

This has become my go to mexican restaurant. Authentic, good portions and great service. I am usually turned off by places that tell you to seat yourself, because you can easily be forgotten. However, the waiters here are on their game. From the minute you sit down (where menus are already conveniently placed) they are there to bring you chips with 2 types of dip (the white one is the best) and ask for your drink order. The food is wonderful. I stick with fajitas wherever I go and these are no doubt the most well seasoned, large in portion for lunch that I've had. Hole in a wall spot. It's on the left corner of the Kmart shopping center in Pembroke. After I seated myself (forgot to add you choose your own seat) I was quickly greeted with friendly smiles and chips and dip. I felt very welcomed and at home. I took a gander at their lunch menu which is located on the second page. I was in a little rush for lunch since I had to get back to work. At Mexican places I always get fried chimichangas w/ chicken. Seeing their $6 below prices for lunch I couldn't say no. It comes with sour cream, guacamole, tomatoes, and your choice of either beans or rice. I chose beans :) My order came out within 10-15 mins. Everything was hot and fresh. I took a bite of my chimichanga and it wasn't bad (taste like every Mexican place I tried) it did the job for me. My server came 3 mins prior and asked me how everything was. I was pleasantly happy to see that the servers genuinely care. He came again another time within 10 mins to ask how I was. I definitely will come back next time to try their drinks and their dinner. My absolute favorite Mexican place, ever! Always hot, fresh food, served quickly by their friendly staff. The go-to Mexican restaurant of my parents for about fifteen years now and mine for the two years I've been back in the area. The staff are great, so friendly, always attentive, as well as immaculately clean and well groomed, no matter how busy they are! I stayed in Suffolk for a while, and still drove back here because the places out there just couldn't compete! In an area with a LOT of competition, El Azteca just rises above every time. Their people, their food, their margaritas, their prices, all excellent. And personally, I think they need to jar and sell their house made salsa. read more

Meh.... This restaurant exemplifies the reason that I rarely order Mexican. It's not terrible per se, it's just not great. As someone who regularly cooks Mexican inspired food with fresh ingredients (lots of citrus, spices, peppers and cilantro) I realize that there is more to Mexican food than having everything covered with bland cheese sauce, unseasoned pico de gallo, blah rice and refried beans. The food from the restaurant is perfectly serviceable as far as all the generic food from the myriad Mexican restaurants around town go, but compared to "the real deal" it's seriously lacking in flavor. I've gotten the carne Asada tacos (bland beef with no seasoning), taquitoes (more bland meat in fried flour tortillas) and chimichangas (more bland food with too much cheese sauce), the pork carnitas (soggy, like overboiled meat instead of the nice, fatty, crispy texture you should expect) ... I can pretty much say they all taste exactly the same. I can never even finish half before I give up. That being said, the chile rellano is decent, and the free chips with salsa and white sauce are a nice starter snack. All in all, nothing horrible here if you like run of the mill "Mexican" takeout. However, if you truly value authentic Mexican flavors, you'd be doing yourself a favor by googling some recipes and making them yourself. read more
