The hush puppies were fantastic, and while my meal was good, I have to admit I left with a little food envy after hearing everyone rave about the Brussels sprouts! They also offer outdoor seating and a private event space downstairs. The cocktails were a bit on the pricey side, but the cozy atmosphere, great service, and local charm made it well worth the visit. I'll definitely be back and next time, I'm ordering those Brussels sprouts.

We went in on a Friday night while staying across the street at the Laurel Hotel. We started off with two Grey Goose Garden cocktails as we warmed up to the Blue Crab Cake appetizer. The crab was one of the best we've ever had. For salads we had the Schoolfield Wedge and I had the Caesar with anchovies. Both were crisp, fresh and tasted great. For a main course I had the 16oz Ribeye that was prepared exactly as requested. We also had the Canadian Whiskey Sea Scallops that were not only succulent and prepared perfectly, but delightfully rich in taste. Our wine pairing was Pinot Grigio for the Sea Scallops and I had a smooth Pinot Noir with the Ribeye. After the meal and relaxing, I finished it off with a Baileys over. The entire service experience was fantastic and after the meal I met the Chef who really did an amazing job overall. Each bite was just perfect. The meal and dish pricing was very good compared to Ramsay's at the Casino. In fact, I'd skip Ramsay's completely and just go to Schoolfield instead. The Schoolfield is far better taste and value. But when we were done, I did not like how she presented me the check. She just quickly flashed me an amount on a screen, and then hid the screen. I asked if I could pay cash and she accepted it but did not bring me a check even then. We ordered 3 burgers that sounded really good. Such a disappointment. The burger meat in each was shaped perfectly and was as hard as a hockey puck. They appeared to be cooked medium but the meat was tough and gristly. I have no idea how they got all the burgers the exact, uniform hockey puck shape. They must be like those frozen ones you can get at Costco. But $17.95 for a frozen hockey puck? At one point, while my kids were telling me how gross the patties were, while my husband and I told them they had to eat them to go play on the playground, I flagged the server down and asked what type of meat it was. She said beef. However, it did not taste like beef. Thank goodness for all the toppings because if they were plain burgers, they would have been inedible. We were so hungry though so we ate what we could. Notably, the buns also tasted cheap like they had just come out of a stale grocery store deli bag. The seasoned fries, sweet potato fries, the homemade ranch and ketchup, and salad with homemade vinaigrette were ok. After we left, I added up what we ordered again and realized she must have charged me an extra $12 to swap out a veggie patty for a beef patty. I was not told there would be an upcharge so felt a little swindled, especially with how she presented the check. I wish I had kept the veggie patty though, because it probably would have been better. Also my kid who had said the burgers were so gross puked right after we left and immediately felt much better and enjoyed 2 hours on the playground. My other kid was jealous of the other one puking. Like you can't make this kind of stuff up. This spot has so much potential. I would honestly hope to visit again just to chill outside but would not ever eat the burgers.

I had the fried trout, which was well-seasoned and flavorful. The catfish was also well-seasoned, although some people might prefer it fried a little harder. Of course, everyone has their own preference when it comes to fried fish! The restaurant was clean and decorated for the season, with fall and Halloween touches throughout. The seasonal decor added a nice touch to the dining experience. Overall, we had a good visit, with good food and excellent service. Although I wish my dad could have been there to introduce me to Captain Cook himself, I'm glad I finally got to experience the place he had wanted to share with me. Sometimes, even when our loved ones are no longer here to make new memories with us, we can still experience some of the things they wanted us to enjoy.

Outstanding Service & Food, But the Smoke Ruined It We had the pleasure of dining at Ramsey Kitchen in Danville, VA, and were beyond impressed with the experience--at least, most of it. First, the staff was exceptional. Every person we encountered was professional, attentive, and truly elevated the dining experience. We were particularly impressed by a young male manager on the floor, who was actively ensuring everything ran smoothly. His leadership and attention to detail did not go unnoticed. The cleanliness of the restaurant was meticulous, which we deeply appreciated. It's clear that the team takes great pride in maintaining a top-tier environment. And the food? Absolutely amazing. Every bite was a testament to the high standards expected from a Gordon Ramsay establishment. For the price, we expected excellence, and in terms of service and cuisine, they delivered. Now for the heartbreaking downside. Despite the perfection inside the restaurant, there was one overwhelming, unavoidable issue: the relentless cigarette smoke. From the moment we arrived until the moment we escaped outside, the thick, choking smoke made it nearly impossible to enjoy our meal. As someone with severe asthma, I was struggling to breathe the entire time. Even two days later, my lungs are still suffering from the exposure. We understand that the restaurant is within a casino, but for such a high-end dining experience, there should be a serious effort to create a better barrier against the smoke. At the very least, guests should be warned about the conditions before making reservations. For the money we spent, the food and service were worth every penny--but we quite literally paid to harm my health. I had to shower and wash all our clothes immediately after leaving just to get rid of the lingering smell. If Ramsey Kitchen could somehow address the issue of smoke intrusion, this would be a 5-star experience all the way. Unfortunately, as it stands, we won't be returning--no matter how incredible the food is--unless changes are made. For anyone sensitive to smoke, consider this a serious warning before dining here. read more

Had the opportunity to take my 79 year old mother to Ramsay's Kitchen in October for her birthday. The service from beginning to end was fantastic. Our server SJ (Sarah) was personable, attentive and went over and beyond to meet our needs. I will request her on my next visit! Kudos to the kitchen staff that prepared our meals. I am from Appomattox, VA. Hostess was extremely polite. Waitress was 100% helpful in sharing her take in the food choices for lunch. She was patient while waiting our selection and extra kind. Unfortunately, my experience was very disappointing. I waited approximately 30 minutes for an order of whiting fish, only to receive fish that was completely unseasoned. While I was waiting, no one ever asked what side dishes I wanted. By the time my fish was finally ready and I was asked to choose my sides, several of the sides I would have ordered were no longer available. What made the experience even more frustrating was watching several male staff members running in and out of the kitchen, joking around and appearing to do very little while customers were waiting. The overall atmosphere gave the impression that the staff simply didn't want to be there. According to the posted hours, the restaurant had opened at 12:00 PM, so by 4:30 PM I expected the operation to be running smoothly. I also never saw a manager wearing the red apron that the posted sign instructed customers to look for if they had concerns or problems. This was my first visit to Shirley T's, and based on this experience, it will also be my last. I hope management takes these issues seriously and improves both the customer service and food quality.

The only thing I was disappointed with was the macaroni and cheese. On my visit it was a little dry and flavorless. The restaurant is pretty large and you get your food cafeteria style. They have booths, tables, high tops and even a very small patio. They have a stage in the back of the restaurant. I heard them say live entertainment should be starting soon. All in all I would definitely come back if I was in the area. The baked spaghetti caught my eye.

The calamari over cooked to being near burnt with squid so gummy it was unpalatable. The cheeseburger sub barely had cheese but did include 2 slices of semi-cooked bacon which I removed because it was so undercooked. The burger was so over cooked I gave up after eating barely a 1/3 of a half of a 10" sub. Took it off the stale to burned sub roll hoping ketchup could salvage it, but I was wrong. The veal parmigiana sub had the same sub roll but my friend was so hungry he ate half. The veal was tasteless except for the sauce which really didn't have much flavor either. Our server still has not adapted to speaking with a mask on so we had to have her repeat everything and mostly just gave up on hearing her. She also couldn't total our check to pay at the register or gauge a tip. And she couldn't remember boxes for the one good part of the meal, the French fries. I've had the takeout and never been unhappy, but this dine in experience was one of the worst I've had anywhere in recent years. I do hope it was just an off night.
