Fresh collards, sweet potatoes and potato salad were excellent. My husband got a big piece of red velvet cake and the peanut butter pie were both big enough to share. I always want to try and support small business and hope the food is outstanding but today didn't make the mark. Very disappointed in the beef tips and gravy with mac & cheese and squash casserole. I saw a picture from another review and thought it looked very good but mine didn't look anything like the other customers. I was really shocked at how small the portion was especially with the sides and there was hardly any rice up under the beef tips. This is a $15 meal here, I think you could do better than this. I'm a mac & cheese connoisseur and your mac & cheese just doesn't do it for me. Hopefully you could see this constructive criticism and maybe tweak a few things to make it a better experience.

Located right on Lawndale Dr in Greensboro, this Black-owned gem completely redefines the soul food experience. The atmosphere hits the sweet spot between cozy and contemporary, making it perfect for date night, family dinners, or a night out with friends. Plus, the background music and the full onsite bar serving craft cocktails give it an amazing, upscale energy. They take traditional Southern staples and elevate them with some incredible modern twists. Here is what you cannot miss: * The Starters: Kick things off with the cheesesteak egg rolls or their signature crab fries. Insanely flavorful. * The Mains: You cannot go wrong here. The bourbon salmon and deep-fried flounder are cooked to absolute perfection. If you want classic comfort, the crispy fried chicken wings, tender oxtails, and juicy lamb chops are elite. * The Sides: They do not play around with the sides. The baked macaroni and cheese is rich and cheesy, and the sweet potato casserole with pecans tastes like a holiday. Balance it out with their perfectly seasoned cabbage or spinach. * The Sweets: Save room for dessert because the strawberry crunch cupcakes are a total dream.

The one person I did see post wasn't even an influencer, just someone I trusted... and I'm glad I finally listened. Because whew ‍ the flavor here is REAL. Everything we had was seasoned well, cooked with care, and tasted like someone who actually loves feeding people was in the kitchen. Nothing felt rushed or generic. It's the kind of place where you can tell the food is made with intention, not shortcuts. If you've been sleeping on Aunt E's like I was, consider this your sign. Greensboro, y'all were lowkey hiding this one. Even tho we didn't eat in the ambiance and vibe was still friendly! A bit pricey! We'll definitely be back. -- Toni

The street situation precluded a few spots downtown, and since we weren't in the mood for our go-to taco place, we decided to head out to the Family Diner. The walk-in was awkward on our part- cash register or hot bar line first? A sweet call from the kitchen of "Y'all's first time?" got us headed in the right direction. Full disclaimer: I've been nostalgic for the southern cafeteria lately. While talking to some food industry friends last week, we realized there is something powerful about the food we all remember from K and W. And while Family Diner doesn't have a giant dining room or a 5-snake velvet rope line to get to the counter, it does take me back. Here's how we made our choices: the hot bar was a choice of three types of chicken- the baked and fried were tempting until the gentleman serving us says: "We can fry you fish to order. Flounder, trout, and catfish." The chicken got skipped for a plate of flounder (plentiful plate, btw), and a side of the Mac and cheese and cooked cabbage. The kid sampled the catfish plate, same sides. Sweet tea. And yes ma'am, I'd like the cornbread. Done. We sat down at a table in the main, cozy dining room. The first thing that I noticed: this place is clean- tidy, even. There was a super polite young man moving around and busing tables, tidying up unassumingly and doing it in a way that is lacking in some finer dining places I've been in recently. The food came out, piping hot. I used one of the malt vinegar packets to douse my flounder (a cafeteria habit) and dug in. The first bite was light and flaky, cooked perfectly. Nothing greasy-tasting, at all, just clean. The sides were great- nothing over seasoned, and like cooking at home, there was room for you to season things to your taste. Well played, Family Diner. The owner (I think? She was the one who guided us down the right path when we walked in) came out to make sure that we were happy, and yes ma'am, it's great, and holy cow, you just dropped this cornbread into the skillet and fried it? Yes, we will be back. It's unassuming, and it's just what the doctor ordered. It's a cafeteria, but it's clean and polite and makes you feel good that you ate there. It's soul food, but not just from an ethnic standpoint- it makes me happy and full and feel welcome and I'll be back.

I started with a Cajun Martini made with jalapeño-infused vodka, and it was exactly what I hoped it would be. It did not taste artificially jalapeño-flavored; it had a real kick and just the right amount of heat. We started with the Crawfish Rangoon Dip, and honestly, I could have made a meal out of it. I have had Rangoon dips before, but this one was especially smooth and full of flavor. If I had been at home, I probably would have been tempted to run my finger around the bowl to get every last bit. For my entrée, I had the Shrimp Étouffée. Others at the table ordered the Duck Jambalaya, Shrimp and Grits, and Gumbo Yaya. My dish seemed to get better with every bite. The Creole stew was rich and deeply flavorful without being over the top. I was especially glad our waitress suggested adding a side of garlic bread to mop up the sauce. Even the garlic bread stood out, toasted on the grill with a slightly smoky flavor. It felt like real attention had been paid to every detail. We all tried each other's dishes, and I would happily go back and order any one of them. The banana pudding at the end of the meal was just as good. It had a strong banana flavor and was not overly sweet. Our servers were friendly and attentive, and the meal moved at a relaxed pace. We never felt rushed. My only complaint was the noise level. The restaurant has a tiled ceiling, and it got loud enough that at times, it was difficult to hear people on the other side of the table. Even with that, I would go back to Blue Denim!

The food continues to be wonderful here! This visit I went with the crawfish rangoon dip appetizer…read moreand the shrimp and grits entree. The crawfish rangoon dip was delightfully cheesy with large pieces of crawfish, the chili sauce was sweet and had a tiny bit of heat, and I loved the crisp and light wonton chips. The shrimp and grits were almost as delicious as I remembered from my visit years ago. There is a moderate amount of cajun spices, so if you don't like somewhat spicy food, you may want to ask to see if they can adjust this, but I loved it as is. My husband had the King Catfish plate and really enjoyed it, though we both agreed the Shrimp and Grits was superior. My only complaint with Blue Denim is the noise level. It is a small space with a charming interior, but given its tight quarters, it can get quite loud even if the restaurant is only half full. I'm not sure how they would go about fixing this, but if the weather is nice (as it was in this latest visit) I will opt to eat at one of their outdoor tables.

And offer specials each day. Lots of meat options and veggie options. Including salad, which isn't always available in a homestyle southern restaurant. The roasted potatoes that are available only on Fridays were my favorite part of the platter. So flavorful and perfectly seasoned. The Mac n cheese was also very good. Creamy and cheesy. The hush puppies were HUGE and very crispy. Loved them. I ordered along with two coworkers. Coworker one is now in love with this place and wants to order at least once a week. Coworker two ordered meatloaf and said it was quite tasty. Negatives: Be prepared for the salt!!!!! We ordered from here twice. We got the chicken pie both times and it was wayyyyy to salty. The first order I was able to combine with the potatoes and Mac n cheese to make it edible. But the second order, all the sides were salty too and I ended up not being able to finish most of the plate. It was also disappointing because I'd ordered chicken tenders but received the chicken pie instead. While I'm wary of ordering in the future because the food is salty, my coworker loves it and we'll order again. Hopefully I can explore more of the menu and find the perfect dish and come back for a higher rating.
