Housed at the end of a highway strip mall outside of Danville, Rustic Barn is neither rustic nor a barn. It is, improbably, a fantastic Asian fusion restaurant. Yes, you read that right. The idiosyncrasies do not stop with the name. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside, The Rustic Barn offers an intimate space with low lighting and some interesting décor: random photos of locomotives adorn the wall.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The menu skews Thai albeit with some Japanese dishes (gyoza, teriyaki, yaki udon) and a few (a burger, a steak and potatoes) that fit the establishment's rurally suggestive name. The proprietor, Jeb, is gracious and accommodating as well as a showman who likes to joke with his guests. His promise of "everything fresh, everything homemade" is a lot to live up to, but the kitchen here has the chops to deliver on that promise. Our group went with a pair of starters (crab rangoons and gyoza), a pair of curries (roadhouse and green), and a pair of noodle dishes (yaki udon and pad Thai). Everything was attractively plated and delicious. The rangoons were hand-formed into delicate shapes and contained plenty of filling while the gyoza were nice and crisp. My entrée was the roadhouse curry: the house version of Massaman. A hearty dish, it boasted thick-cut vegetables and a rich sauce done to the desired (a little bit spicy) level of heat. Prices are moderate (entrees start in the upper teens), but portions are plenty filling. Given how many Danville restaurants were closed on a Sunday evening, I count myself lucky that The Rustic Barn was not among them. If you come here seeking country cooking, you'll be confused and perhaps disappointed. But if you know what you're getting yourself into, the combination of personable service and tasty food in an offbeat location makes this the epitome of a hidden gem. read more

Wow!! What a fantastic find. We are out here for a few days from Nashville and decided to give this place a go. The food is amazing, authentic, wonderfully prepared and delicious!!! We had Yaki Udon, Pad Thai and Fried Wonton. All the food is fresh and prepared as to perfection!! We also tried the amazing home made lemonade. Everything was wonderful!! This was a great gem we stumbled upon. A very enthusiastic and dedicated gentleman introduced their menu to our dinner party of 3. Friendly and nice. Personally, I much rather get steak at a steakhouse so I would skip the steak dish and go for the classic Thai food. This Thai food restaurant is definitely better than moon river on the other side of Danville. Found this restaurant on Yelp based on the reviews -- and it did not disappoint! Everything was made fresh and was very tasty. We had Crab Rangoon that had a crispy outside and creamy inside, Bang Bang Shrimp that had a tender crispy outside and a tasty creamy inside, a wonderful beef dish with tender beef that's only occasionally on the menu since it has to simmer for a long time, and chicken pad Thai with a slightly sweet and spicy sauce and noodles with pleasing flavors throughout. What a great place! The host was so welcoming! We were coming back from Floyd and found this little gem right on 58! The lemonade was sweet and beautiful! The color was a cool blue and turned purple when you mixed it! The sweet tea was perfect and reminded me of my Granny's. We had crab Rangoon for the appetizer. They were the perfect combination of crunchy and creamy. I had Shrimp Pad Thai. It was made to perfection. I had plenty left over for lunch the next day too. My husband cleaned his plate too. New favorite restaurant! We came in on a Sunday night, around 7:30pm, there was only a family in there. We were seated right away. The staff was so friendly and polite and explained the menu very well. I ordered the Thai iced tea which was yummy! We got crab rangoons and gyoza as the appetizer. Both were great, especially the crab rangoons, probably the best I've had. For my entree, I got the teriyaki chicken. Super yummy! Everything is made to order so it was fresh and hot. The wife and I went last night with two teenagers. We were in for a very unique experience. The gentleman that owns the restaurant greeted us and set us at a table. Ordered drinks and gyoza and he was very attentive and polite. Noticed there was a storm brewing outside about the time we got our food. Just as we were about to eat, the power went out!!
