Housed at the end of a highway strip mall outside of Danville, Rustic Barn is neither rustic nor a barn. It is, improbably, a fantastic Asian fusion restaurant. Yes, you read that right. The idiosyncrasies do not stop with the name. Inside, The Rustic Barn offers an intimate space with low lighting and some interesting décor: random photos of locomotives adorn the wall. The menu skews Thai albeit with some Japanese dishes (gyoza, teriyaki, yaki udon) and a few (a burger, a steak and potatoes) that fit the establishment's rurally suggestive name. The proprietor, Jeb, is gracious and accommodating as well as a showman who likes to joke with his guests. His promise of "everything fresh, everything homemade" is a lot to live up to, but the kitchen here has the chops to deliver on that promise. Our group went with a pair of starters (crab rangoons and gyoza), a pair of curries (roadhouse and green), and a pair of noodle dishes (yaki udon and pad Thai). Everything was attractively plated and delicious. The rangoons were hand-formed into delicate shapes and contained plenty of filling while the gyoza were nice and crisp. My entrée was the roadhouse curry: the house version of Massaman. A hearty dish, it boasted thick-cut vegetables and a rich sauce done to the desired (a little bit spicy) level of heat. Prices are moderate (entrees start in the upper teens), but portions are plenty filling. Given how many Danville restaurants were closed on a Sunday evening, I count myself lucky that The Rustic Barn was not among them. If you come here seeking country cooking, you'll be confused and perhaps disappointed. But if you know what you're getting yourself into, the combination of personable service and tasty food in an offbeat location makes this the epitome of a hidden gem. read more

Wow!! What a fantastic find. We are out here for a few days from Nashville and decided to give this place a go. The food is amazing, authentic, wonderfully prepared and delicious!!! We had Yaki Udon, Pad Thai and Fried Wonton. All the food is fresh and prepared as to perfection!! We also tried the amazing home made lemonade. Everything was wonderful!! We greeted by the sweetest man! He was attentive throughout our meal. I came in with my daughter (who is allergic to wheat, eggs, and peanuts) a few days after she had her wisdom teeth out. The gentle man let me know that everything was customizable. She had the vegetable Pad Thai without the peanuts and egg. They cooked the vegetables extra soft for her. The portions were perfect and the restaurant and restroom were clean. The Thai tea was yummy. We had a great experience! This was a great gem we stumbled upon. The restaurant was clean, new, and open. They had additional seating area that would accommodate more people. The manager/server was busting his behind and the girl in there was so sweet. They were willing to accommodate my desire for steak and shrimp in my curry which was awesome. (Additional cost but worth it!) The best part though, was the food hands down! The meat was tender and the flavors were absolutely amazing. A very enthusiastic and dedicated gentleman introduced their menu to our dinner party of 3. Friendly and nice. The ambiance is very "dark" as in very low lighting atmosphere so if you ate a lot like we did, you will be ready for bed. They play fusion music which has English and Thai in the background. The favorite appetizer was the chicken satay. Dinner entree was the shrimp Thai basil. Desert was the fried donut with ice cream. The curry puff appetizer wasn't "puff pastry" as I expected like most Thai restaurants but rather a thin but crunchy shell. Their specialty drink is equivalent to an Arnold Palmer. Personally, I much rather get steak at a steakhouse so I would skip the steak dish and go for the classic Thai food. This Thai food restaurant is definitely better than moon river on the other side of Danville. (In terms of flavor of food and service) parking situation is also much better at this location - lots of parking in the lot in front of the store. read more

Found this restaurant on Yelp based on the reviews -- and it did not disappoint! Everything was made fresh and was very tasty. We had Crab Rangoon that had a crispy outside and creamy inside, Bang Bang Shrimp that had a tender crispy outside and a tasty creamy inside, a wonderful beef dish with tender beef that's only occasionally on the menu since it has to simmer for a long time, and chicken pad Thai with a slightly sweet and spicy sauce and noodles with pleasing flavors throughout. The owner took our order and confidently told us we wouldn't need any sauce, and he was right! The spring rolls were crisp and fresh (though we wished the sweet chili sauce had a little more heat). I had the Yaki Udon with veggies..so flavorful and perfectly sauced. My partner's hibachi veggie rice? Chef's kiss. Honestly, I liked his even more than mine. New favorite restaurant! We came in on a Sunday night, around 7:30pm, there was only a family in there. We were seated right away. The staff was so friendly and polite and explained the menu very well. I ordered the Thai iced tea which was yummy! We got crab rangoons and gyoza as the appetizer. Both were great, especially the crab rangoons, probably the best I've had. For my entree, I got the teriyaki chicken. Super yummy! Everything is made to order so it was fresh and hot. What a great place! The host was so welcoming! We were coming back from Floyd and found this little gem right on 58! The lemonade was sweet and beautiful! The color was a cool blue and turned purple when you mixed it! The sweet tea was perfect and reminded me of my Granny's. We had crab Rangoon for the appetizer. They were the perfect combination of crunchy and creamy. I had Shrimp Pad Thai. It was made to perfection. I had plenty left over for lunch the next day too. My husband cleaned his plate too. The wife and I went last night with two teenagers. We were in for a very unique experience. The gentleman that owns the restaurant greeted us and set us at a table. Ordered drinks and gyoza and he was very attentive and polite. Noticed there was a storm brewing outside about the time we got our food. Just as we were about to eat, the power went out!! The flavor is complex in a way it's hard to put my finger on. The perfect combination of savory, spice (adjustable) umami. You can tell everything is fresh and made from scratch with love. I love the Tom Yum soup (creamy/brothy magic) Green curry of any kind, everything we've tried has been on point.
