So delicious! Odd little walkway to get inside the restaurant, unmarked door and front patio that looks like a derelict house. As soon as you enter the door, you'll be in a hallway but to the right is a set of stairs, an employee will seat you. The menu is full of standard Thai food. The waitress was working the whole dining room (about 16 people including us) but was really efficient and our food came fast! A house salad is included so be sure to get the awesome house dressing on it, I would order a bottle to go home if it were available. My Garlic Chicken was perfect and my bf had Panang Curry which was not spicy so we both enjoyed it. read more

The food, service, and ambiance all were wonderful here. We had three cocktails that were all Asian inspired, one curry, and one duck special that day. It was all wonderful and high quality food. If we lived in town, this would certainly be a go to restaurant and bar, and from our first experience there, they would very quickly treat us like family. They were really welcoming. I had had terrible time the night before, but my friends talked me into trying this place with them and it was a fantastic experience. The entryway is a little strange because the business is in a house, but otherwise the ambience is more upscale than you would normally expect, and they have a bar in one room and the restaurant in the larger part of the house. We were seated quickly, despite not having a reservation and our server was very friendly and really helpful. I chose to have their sake, ginger martini and ended up having two of them because they were so good! Our table ordered Pad See Ew, Pad Woon Sen, Yellow curry and Pad Thai. What the pho?!! Everything that our lunch party of twelve tried at this little family-run Thai joint was PHOnominal! Half of our group ordered their savory pho (pronounced phuh). Both chicken and beef versions were downright delicious. I went with my favorite Thai rice noodle dish, Pad See Ew, which was perfectly prepared and presented. The piping hot spring rolls were low on grease and high in flavor. Our delightful server, Tri, was friendly, patient and attentive. Sanitation score was an A and everything was clean. Decor is sparce but atmosphere is pleasant. Overall, I'd say this place is definitely a Gotta Try. We hope to return on our next trip from Charlotte to our hometown of Danville. read more

If you are in Danville and want an excellent meal, this is the place for you. The service is efficient and we were seated immediately on Saturday night with no reservation. We started with the eggrolls which were were very good. Nicely cooked and tasted great. My wife is picky about egg rolls and enjoyed them very much. For mains we had two specials: Crispy basil Salmon and Crispy basil duck Both were exceptional. The presentation was top notch and the flavors were exceptional. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the duck pieces were lightly tempura battered and super tender. The rice was perfectly cooked as well. We eat thai a lot and this was on of the best thai meals we have had. Surprisingly pleased with this place. Some of my husband's coworkers had been here many times and loved the food. We decided to give it a try. It's a small place, so there might be a little wait. It looks like a family run business. I had the pineapple fried rice with chicken and my husband had the Thai fried rice with steak (not pictured). Looks can be deceiving; we almost didn't go inside due to the outside appearance. Once we got inside it was cute with nice table settings that were worthy of a date night. The waitress was super nice and attentive. We got Chicken Satay; Tom Kha with tofu for the protein (not pictured but also beautiful); Panang Curry with chicken for the protein; "Crispy" Garlic Duck (to be fair, it was not even close to crispy when it arrived at the table due to the sauce it was in but it had great flavor) My husband and I are daydreaming about going back and trying everything on the menu. Sojourning from Greensboro, found this little Gem on yelp and decided to make our first visit to Danville VA. We were quite pleased and very impressed with this very unassuming small dining place in a very unassuming part of town which was showing what I have just learned to be the Textile Mill town Exodus. Greeted sweetly at the door and our smiling waitress joyfully shared the menu items and answered all of our questions. Don't pass on the libations as I had the Bourbon Basil Old Fashion and the misses had the Ginger Sake Martini. Both excellent and we especially enjoyed the Martini. We moved on to the Fresh Spring rolls which were well adorned with Shrimp, shredded lettuce and cilantro accompanied with wonderful Peanut and Hoisen sauces to dip in. The Misses had the Masamman in which the balance was perfect and a Coconut forward in flavor of which we prefer. I had the Crispy Basil Duck and we both agreed it was some of the best Duck we had anywhere and the dish overall was so flavorful with nuance, spice, texture and skillful preparation. A great find and we promised to try the Mango Sticky rice upon our next return of which she highly recommended. A suggestion was made by our waitress to drive down main and take in all the old house mansions which was another thing worth doing if you haven't done it. Such an interesting town with such an interesting History. I hope for the towns sake it can bounce back because there is so much potential to be had there. read more

What an amazing cozy, intimate restaurant! It's located in a very old building in what's called the business area of Danville. The restaurant is decorated very tastefully keeping much of the old charm. My wife and I had a great conversation with the young owner. He worked at the restaurant for over 10 years and had the opportunity 2 years ago to purchase it. He is very passionate about providing a quality meal to every patron. Amazing young man! Now the food... We started with the calamari. Cooked to perfection. It had a tempura coating, very light and an assortment of vegetables added. Very creative. I had the curry with chicken and my wife had pho. Both dishes were seasoned and spiced nicely. Service was great and prices very reasonable. Note to the owner: you're doing a great job! Keep up the quality. If your expenses increase, don't do what many restaurants do and cut back on quality. Raise the prices if you need to. People will pay for quality. read more

We have been to Moon River many times during the 5 years we've lived in Danville. They have the absolute BEST Thai food we have ever tried. Tonight we went to celebrate our anniversary, and everything was excellent. Dinner starts with a salad served with the world's BEST peanut dressing - it is to die for. We ordered the vegetable crispy roll appetizer (always delicious!). I had the special which was a whole fried fish with chili sauce and vegetables. My husband had crispy stir fried pork (listed as fried chicken, duck, or pork). The entrees come with a generous portion of jasmine rice (great to help cool down the spice if you order a spicy dish). Previously we have had the Thai iced tea, which is ultra refreshing and sweet, Thai fried rice with shrimp, pineapple fried rice with shrimp or tofu, cashew stir fry, basil stir fry, and pad see-ew with tofu and vegetables. Every meal we have tried has been delicious. If you don't like spicy food, don't worry. There are plenty of mild options on the menu. They have a spice level listed on the menu at the bottom right hand corner. I am so happy to live just a couple minutes away. We will definitely keep returning!! read more

Don't judge a book by its cover or prologue. Walking into the restaurant, I found it old and unclear as to where I was suppose to go or for that matter where to stand to be seated. I ended up at or behind a register, and was asked if I needed help. I was then taken to an area of where my table was located but still was unclear as to what table I was to sit at, as the host/waiter just pointed in a direction and not a specific table. This issue was more of a restaurant design than a service issue. Confusing at best.... I ordered a side salad and a crispy tofu vegetable dish. Never got my side salad, but instead I did get a never ordered rice soup which turned out to be awesome, as was the main tofu dish! In summary, the food was delicious, service was good but confusing. I was charged for a side salad and a crispy tofu veggie dish. I'm giving Moon River Thai five stars because the food was very very good. Highly recommend without reservation, just to get lost trying to get to your table. read more

It is the most unlikely thing that a truly great Thai restaurant exists in Danville, Virginia, yet it does, and shouldn't be missed. This last visit, we learned that Jason, the young man who has worked there since its opening, is now the owner. His passion is apparent. We each had one of the signature cocktails, which were wonderful. Fried egg rolls for an app were light and crispy. My dining companion had drunken noodles, I did pad grapao. We both took food home, as the servings were plentiful. The location had kind of a funky entrance, to the left of the actual restaurant space. Don't be put off by that. Once inside, you'll find it calm and elegant, without being pretentious. We have a real love of good Thai food, and seek it out when we travel. Danville is one of those places I never thought I would visit. It's also one of those places I never thought I'd find good thai food, but that's exactly what I found at Moon River Thai. I happened to be in town for work a couple of times, and found Moon River on Yelp/Google Maps when looking for a place for lunch. It can be a little hard to find on the road since it's at a weird spot on the intersection without super obvious signage, but I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the interior of the restaurant was. Most importantly, the food was fantastic! I came back for lunch twice and both times the curry was amazing. I had a red curry with beef the first time, and I think green curry with chicken the second. The curry was perfectly balanced with great flavor and just enough heat. Maybe I am used to Boston prices, but I couldn't believe that my lunch was only $10 before tax and tip. If they had a place like this in MA close to where I live, I'd probably visit once a week. read more
