Housed at the end of a highway strip mall outside of Danville, Rustic Barn is neither rustic nor a…read morebarn. It is, improbably, a fantastic Asian fusion restaurant. Yes, you read that right. The idiosyncrasies do not stop with the name. Inside, The Rustic Barn offers an intimate space with low lighting and some interesting décor: random photos of locomotives adorn the wall. The menu skews Thai albeit with some Japanese dishes (gyoza, teriyaki, yaki udon) and a few (a burger, a steak and potatoes) that fit the establishment's rurally suggestive name. The proprietor, Jeb, is gracious and accommodating as well as a showman who likes to joke with his guests. His promise of "everything fresh, everything homemade" is a lot to live up to, but the kitchen here has the chops to deliver on that promise. Our group went with a pair of starters (crab rangoons and gyoza), a pair of curries (roadhouse and green), and a pair of noodle dishes (yaki udon and pad Thai). Everything was attractively plated and delicious. The rangoons were hand-formed into delicate shapes and contained plenty of filling while the gyoza were nice and crisp. My entrée was the roadhouse curry: the house version of Massaman. A hearty dish, it boasted thick-cut vegetables and a rich sauce done to the desired (a little bit spicy) level of heat. Prices are moderate (entrees start in the upper teens), but portions are plenty filling. Given how many Danville restaurants were closed on a Sunday evening, I count myself lucky that The Rustic Barn was not among them. If you come here seeking country cooking, you'll be confused and perhaps disappointed. But if you know what you're getting yourself into, the combination of personable service and tasty food in an offbeat location makes this the epitome of a hidden gem.

I came here to try the pho after seeing many reviews of it online. The owenr, at least I am…read moreassuming he is, greeted me when I came in, happy to see me, and took my order. Now, I will say that I am not the biggest fan of pho and do not order it often, as ramen is my one true love in terms of soups. Nonetheless, I order the combination pho with multiple types of meat. The owner brought out my to-go order after about 10 min. He told me to try the broth and seemed very proud of it. So, when I sat down to eat, I did just that, I tried just the broth alone first. Wow, I was amazed by the depth of flavor. There was no mistaking that this was legit pho. It came with the typical add-ons of basil, onions, cilantro, bean sprouts, hoisin sauce, and noodles. I finished the entire meal and wanted more. Worth the price and I will definitely be going back to get this more often.

She gave me a long death stare when I asked for my fish without aioli and lemon instead. Initially I thought she didn't hear me so I repeated the request for just lemon. She finally spoke and it was to tell me that "aioli is sauce." Yes, I am aware. It's a mayo based sauce and I don't like mayo. My husband ordered unsweetened tea which she forgot. After 20 min we requested it again which she promptly brought sweet tea. He took one swig and almost vomited. He then politely asked for UN-sweet tea and she kept pointing to the glass insisting "That is sweet tea." Instead of arguing just do your job and don't assume that we don't know what we are talking about. He finally got the UN-sweet tea. We saw another table had an issue with her. Half the food on people's tables came out in cafeteria tins, the rest on plates. It was very OK food with poor service.

We went in on a Friday night while staying across the street at the Laurel Hotel. We started off with two Grey Goose Garden cocktails as we warmed up to the Blue Crab Cake appetizer. The crab was one of the best we've ever had. For salads we had the Schoolfield Wedge and I had the Caesar with anchovies. Both were crisp, fresh and tasted great. For a main course I had the 16oz Ribeye that was prepared exactly as requested. We also had the Canadian Whiskey Sea Scallops that were not only succulent and prepared perfectly, but delightfully rich in taste. Our wine pairing was Pinot Grigio for the Sea Scallops and I had a smooth Pinot Noir with the Ribeye. After the meal and relaxing, I finished it off with a Baileys over. The entire service experience was fantastic and after the meal I met the Chef who really did an amazing job overall. Each bite was just perfect. The meal and dish pricing was very good compared to Ramsay's at the Casino. In fact, I'd skip Ramsay's completely and just go to Schoolfield instead. The Schoolfield is far better taste and value. Bon apetite!

Living in California now and being an Elite Yelper, I've explored a good amount of my authentic, mom n pop Mexican food. I asked my mom if she had tried this place and she said no. That was my cue to come on in and check it out! The restaurant and the store are both connected and I assume owned by the same people so after I placed my order for Quesabirria Tacos, I browsed the store to see what's good. In the store I found these fruits purée canned drinks (so good but hella sugar in them - which is fine too. Just don't say you weren't warned haha) and got like 4 different flavors (strawberry banana, guava nectar, and pineapple coconut). All delicious. Highly recommend. The service was good. The young ladies helped me pick out my drinks and were super sweet. Now, the quesabirria tacos...They're not the best but the meat was very tender and the price was very affordable so I don't feel like it was a waste. I would still go back and try other things. I feel there could have been more cheese and more flavor in the beef. My tortilla was also very soft/floppy. Like I said....I'd still come back and give them one more try!

They must not do chips and salsa here bc we didn't get any until after the guacamole came and I asked for it. I ordered ceviche and it really needed salt. I also ordered birria tacos. The sauce that came with the tacos was just grease and the tacos smelled like dog poo. There was no air conditioning. The food was the worst I've ever come across. The waitress barely visited us and we had to wait a long time for her.
