Legitimate ramen! Visiting Amsterdam from New York, and was craving some ramen on a rainy Dutch afternoon. Was told by a local friend to check out the newly opened Ramen-Ya in De Wallen (which appears to be getting a bit of a face lift, for the better). Although it's not Japan, New York has a pretty robust ramen scene and I thought Ramen-Ya could easily make a name for itself there. Yesterday we went to Ramen-Ya with the yelp tour organized by Ana! She did a great job! When we arrived she greeted us and on the tables were little printed menu's with the dishes on them. When I told her that I didn't eat meat she went to the staff immediately to inform them and also managed to get me a discount as well., Thanks! I loved this nice hidden restaurant! the interior was cozy and stylish and it was much bigger than I expected! I loved the lamps above the tables! The waiter was also very friendly so the atmosphere in total was great. I tried the veggie ramen and absolutely loved it. I agree with AJ that the tomato was a bit unexpected but it did not bother me and the dish was amazing. The veggie broth was so delicious and rich in taste! The noodles had the right structure and everything was just perfect. The amount of soup was perfect for me and I enjoyed every bit of it. I also really liked the Calpis drink! I spent 2 weeks in Japan last year and this was on par, and slightly better than some places in Japan. food: the tonkotsu broth is rich yet not heavy or oily. Chewy noodles, fresh fatty pork slice, thick pieces of bamboo shoots, and very nice service. price: 11.50 euro for the basic salt based tonkotsu ramen I would highly recommend this one specially on a cold night. read more

Ramen hit the spot! I highly recommend the mint tea which went perfect with the raining evening; very subtle, yet fragrant fresh mint leaves. The karkamen was fantastic, although I would probably get a ramen bowl that doesn't have the chopped pork in it next time (and just so sliced). Despite that, the flavor of the chopped pork was good, just not the texture I was looking for. Sub the half boiled egg for a soft egg and it was phenomenal and added a creaminess to the bowl. No spice at all, but the chili oil offered in the table setting added the flavor needed. Great experience and decent prices. read more

Being from Houston and had my fair share of good/decent Ramen, this has got to be the worst Ramen i have had. Sadly this was my first meal in Amsterdam and it definitely ruined my appetite. Our waiter recommended The Hakata miso based for the Hakata Ramen. All three of us went with his recommendation and all three of us couldn't finish half of our Ramen. The broth was wayyyy too thick and the noodles were too chewy. The owners was shocked when she came by and saw three untouched noodles. We just politely told her that the Ramen was too different for what we used to in America. So if you're from Texas or any places with decent Ramen, be warned. I enjoyed the Hakata style ramen here and also enjoyed the fact that we didn't have to wait for a table. I ordered the Hakata Deluxe and my wife the regular Hakata. We also ordered a side of the pork belly buns as an appetizer which were quite good. The milky broth of the ramen was quite dense, very flavorful, rich, savory, and with a nice slightly spicy kick to it. I had low expectations (being in the red light district of Amsterdam and all...) for this place but was pleasantly surprised at how good the broth was. The noodles were nice and firm. The pork should have been warmed up before topping it onto the ramen as I noticed a temperature difference, not a big deal though - everything together was super tasty. Ramen-Ya is a decent spot for ramen; it's a solid choice to curb cravings. The noodles are the right amount of chewy, holding up well in hot broth instead of becoming mush. While the broth is thicker than I'd like for tonkotsu (more like tsukemen broth), it's rich and tasty. It can be a tad salty, so I have committed the cardinal sin of adding water to the broth in the past. The highlight was the onsen tamago - silky, soft egg yolk that breaks beautifully into the broth. I'll try out other ramen spots in the city to see how it compares to Ramen-Ya, but so far, this is my regular spot whenever I get serious cravings. NOTE: I miss delicious tsukemen from Tsujita. Tonkotsu style from Yukinoya or Ramen Yamadaya. Shoyu ramen from Men Oh Tokushima. I've been blessed to have tried some delicious noodles and broth in Los Angeles and New York. So if you're looking for some regional styles, Amsterdam is not your city. read more

The ramen's average but the space is hip and the service is great (and somehow KPN 4G reaches their basement space). The gyoza is really good -- the kara-age, less so. I need to try the other ramen joint in town, but this is a great place for a soup noodle fix. read more

I was in the mood to splurge and got the most expensive noodle on the menu. It was a miso based soup with slices of pork. The broth was heavy, but they had warned me so. The whole bowl was warm and not hot; I personally prefer soups and noodles really hot (in terms of temperature). The garnishing on top was a bit much. It angers me that there aren't more reviews for this place. This was literally the best ramen I've ever had in my life. I've had my good share of ramen from multiple cities. Finally, a decent ramen spot in town! I live close to Fou Fow which many people rave about but I found lacking in depth of flavor. Ramen-Ya, on the other hand, seems to take great care in creating that nice creamy broth - the menu description for the Hakata ramen even mentions that it's cooked for a least 10 hours! Add to that some seriously tasty ingredients - that pork! - and you have a great heaping bowl of comfort for a decent price. I also sampled a friend's spicier bowl of ramen and I can't wait to go back and order that myself. The place is well equipped for date night and huge crowds alike - we showed up with a group of 12 for lunch and were seated immediately, no reservations required, and I hear that this is often the case during peak dinner time as well. Glad Ramen-Ya is around to satisfy my ramen cravings as NYC is too far away haha Went there for the first time a few days ago and I gotta say not bad, not bad! Shared the pork buns and while they were absolutely tasty I have to agree with a fellow yelper that the mayonnaise sauce could be replaced. It kinda brings down the excellent flavor of the pork and makes it too dutch for my taste if that makes sense. Anyhow I had the sesame chicken shio which really hit the spot, broth was delicious. I rate this place a 4 compared to the other ramen-ya places that I have been around the US. They serve mostly ramen bowl dishes and a few extra toppings and sides. They offer a few selections of alcoholic beverages and drinks. The location is located at the corner facing the canal. It has stairs to go down to the restaurant, I see no elevator so I'm not sure if it's whee chair accessible. I've never had real Japanese ramen before, so I can't compare this place to other authentic ramen places, but I can say that it's a hell of a lot better than the ramen you get for 60 cents from the grocery store. Holy cow what a difference. It costs 20 times more than that little dried out package of ramen, but it's worth it as an occassional treat. I had the standard salt broth house specialty ramen with pork in it, and while I'm not normally a fan of pork, this was pretty good. It was rich and flavorful, and even the overboiled half an egg in the soup went well with everything else and didn't squick me out. I found the ratio of noodles to broth to be perfect. I finished both at the same time and wanted more. My husband had the chicken soup ramen, and wow that was a great version of the traditional chicken soup. I wish I had something like this when I was sick. We went with our 3 year old on a weekend, at around 5pm when they were not too busy. They were accommodating and got her a bowl so she could have some noodles too. She enjoyed some noodles but spent most of her time playing under the table, and later dancing in the open area next to the host. They were very gracious and if they were getting annoyed they didn't let on. Our little girl is usually pretty quiet but she does take up a lot of room with her dancing. We were grateful the food was brought quickly, and the check was brought quickly as well when we wanted to leave, so that helped us keep our restaurant toddler wrangling time to a minimum. Some of the best ramen I've had in a while. i love trying authentic ramen and last time was somewhere in Asia. that broth was super heavy but the ones here were normal. i got the salt broth which was not salty. superb noodles. being hungover from the previous night and a tourist, me and my friend opened yelp as we wandered aimlessly in Amsterdam. popped open yelp and i joked everything around here have good rating. I then saw that there was a ramen place and nothing beats a hangover like a nice bowl of soul noodle. entrance (1:30pm): we walked up to the door with an open sign, but was honestly gravely confused if the restaurant was open at all, the door will only push in and the hostess/front of house was not present. I should deduct a star for this but it's really their operational loss as how would a restaurant compete with the other touristy attraction when it looks dead before anyone even walks in? walked downstairs and i was greated with a sight of the kitchen and all the workers standing about, kind of a deer in headlight look about them. a waitress seated us in a table/booth of our choosing. the waiter was very helpful and helped us order a hakata deluxe miso ramen with extra pork belly, chicken bun, pork bun, and edamame. we ordered the house ice tea and lemongrass tea in an attempt to brush away our hang over. the tea was quickly served up and the house tea was delicious. however, the tea comes already sweetened. I'd much rather they brought it to me unsweetened and allow me to sweeten it to my liking with a sweetener of my choice, but alas that may be my fat American ass talking. I should duck a point here too, the appetizer, edamame did not show until the ramen was served. what's the point of an appetizer if your main entree shows up before it? the taste leaves much to be crave bit it wasn't overly salty. moving on. the ramen was on-point and i will say it's one of the best ramen I've had. the broth is perfectly made and rich with flavors, not overly oily and definitely not blend. the special meat that the deluxe has is definitely better than the standard pork belly meat. I had asked for the noodle to be cooked on the hard side as an afterthought and it was made known to me that it is an option noted on the menu. this option is so important in my opinion they should have made it more obvious it can be done. the noodle was average tasting and didnt stand out to me, the texture was OK but they did all clumped together. the onsen egg was on point but I also found a huge piece of egg shell on it. the half boiled egg is perfectly done and have flavor, only issue is like with all other place, the coldness of the egg distract from the warm rich broth. the biggest complaint I have is the excessive onions Putnam the middle, it can be a bit excessive. when the ramen was finished, there was definitely enough broth left that they should teach client the option of ordering extra noodle and toppings after to fill any additional starving bellies. the pork bun and chicken bun was mediocre and nothing to write home about. the pork bun should definitely use a thinner and thicker piece of meat for it to warrant a proper review. all in all, the ramen broth was on-point, noodle done so that there was no complaint, together with toppings that didn't distract (much), i have to say this is number 1 to 2 ramen I've ever had so far. good job and keep up the good work. read more

If the noodles hadn't been so filling, we would have ordered seconds--it was that tasty! I preferred the kimchi ramen and, much to my dining companion's frustration, kept sneaking bites when I could. It is pretty easy to find, however do take note that the entrance is underground. It's quite reasonably priced. The place has a decent environment and the staff are very helpful and friendly.
