Always have great service but today in particular made me have the utmost respect for my waitress. Three very rude women came in asking for a table of 6 and one waitress asked them if they could sit on one side of the restaurant at a table that obviously sat 6 comfortably. The women proceeded to say it wasn't enough room and that they'd have to pull another table up or move to the other side that sat 8 in larger chairs. The server said that was fine and the women sat down and proceeded to talk very rudely about the server very loudly to where my fiancé and I could hear them on the other side of the room. Our server then tried to politely explain to them why the previous server asked them to sit on the other side and the woman became ugly and rude with her so they were told they wouldn't be served. My server then came and apologized to our table. 10/10 for sticking up for themselves and not allowing a rude and demeaning customer ruin the positive atmosphere that they had going before the women walked in. Wonderful breakfast. Good Service. Great value. Loved the French toast! It's lightly battered to make it a little crunchy and different from just a regular French toast. Aside from the food and service being great, the cost is great too. Will definitely be back for breakfast every time I visit Lubbock. read more

So I'm sitting in Rain Cafe right now. I don't think I'll be sitting here again. When you sit at the be you get to see alot of what happens in the kitchen. So, here is what I saw - the good bad and ugly. An unbattered steak which was to become chicken fried steak was on the counter for thirty minutes before it was battered, fried and served up. A kitchen hand cleaned the area under a toaster by blowing the crumbs on the floor. Now, I'll say that about 5 minutes after someone was sweeping the kitchen, but the offending blow moved the crumbs outside of the kitchen so it wasn't really swept. I salad was prepared and left out for 20 minutes while they cooked some grilled chicken to put on top. I was noting how they were using the fryer - at first I thought they had a mean and a vegetable (fries) fryer. That proved to be untrue because they moved chicken fried steak from one fryer to another. I saw fries that were taken out of they fryer, sat for about 5 minutes before the last bit was put on someone's plate, however it wasn't enough (even the waitress said something) - so they started a new batch which took another 5 minutes to fry and then put the fresh fries over the cold ones. I've tried not being negative here. The wait staff was extremely nice, everyone was apologetic about the delays in preparing the food, etc. But in the end, those niceties don't outweigh the poor kitchen habits. If you are the kind of person that likes a greasy spoon - this might fill the need. There were certainly a lot of people there enjoying Sunday brunch. Save your money for Rain Uptown or go to Home Cafe instead. BTW - the second star was for the service. read more

Very similar to Red Zone Cafe only smaller. Waitresses know all the older farmers who are in with their wives, having coffee and shooting the breeze. Great place to get breakfast and feel like a local West Texan :) Feels like being in your own comfortable neighborhood, even if you just moved to Lubbock. Food is regular breakfast & sandwich stuffs, but done well and most plates are between $2-$6 (how can you beat that?). Expect some chaos here on a Sunday morning. Then again, what breakfast place ISN'T chaotic on a Sunday morning? At first we weren't sure whether to wait to be seated, but quickly learned it is a "seat yourself"/hunt for a table situation. After experiencing the JOY that is Rain Uptown, this place was a MAJOR disappointment. Although the prices weren't bad, the food left a lot to be desired. All we had were burgers, but I think we almost would have been better off getting a burger from Burger King or a burger stand down the road. It wasn't really all that great or worth dealing with the chaos in the establishment. They clearly need to hire more waitresses because the ones that were working were so busy they couldn't adequately focus on *any* of their tables. Plus, the atmosphere is so loud, you can't even hear yourself or whomever you're dining with. I say do yourself a favor and just head to Rain Uptown and have a good, peaceful meal there. read more

Absolutely LOVED my burger...I had the regular bun, bacon Swiss, lettuce, avocado, and an egg on top!!! (Not on menu, but it should be!!) Also get their homemade chips...delicious. Next time I want to try the crusted French toast and have breakfast. It's served all day and I believe opened realllly early 7 days a week. I went Easter Sunday for brunch with some friends. The waitress was sweet, you basically seat yourself. I had the eggs sausage and French toast. The eggs were bland, the sausage patty too salty for my taste but the French toast was delicious. I live very close by, but haven't been in to eat in quite some time. The store has been remodeled, and has a clean, fresh look, but could use a splash of color. The new menus are laminated, and a single page, but the thing that stood out to me was the increase in prices. A glass of iced tea is now $2.99! I saw a post online for an enchilada special, so I asked what sauce was on the cheese enchilada plate. The lead cook told the waitress there was no sauce, but that wasn't correct. I ordered the beef enchiladas, which came with beans and rice, and was topped with chili and cheese, had shredded lettuce and diced tomato to the side on the plate. The tea was soured at 7pm, so they took it off the ticket, and gave me a soda instead. The beans and rice were homemade, tasted good, and were flavorful, but the beans had been microwaved and were served dried out. The enchiladas had a decent portion of ground meat, and the chili was also good. The lack of business was pretty sad. Used to, the elderly folks in the area liked to gather here for dinner and coffee. I think they've priced themselves out of the elderly market. The staff hid in back most of the time I was there, and goofed off the other half. Such a shame. read more

The food is amazing the owner/manager...not so much! Our waiter Julian saved the day and kept us from getting up and leaving. We are very grateful we stayed. Manager was still very rude, but we looked past her and chose to not let her ruin our dining experience. We visit the restaurant every Saturday, in the early afternoon and we sit in Julian's section every time. The staff (sans the manager) are all so cordial and friendly. We have witnessed them going above and beyond to help their customers. You will enjoy the food! Just be forewarned, pay no attention to the woman behind the curtain! Try the French toast. OHMYWORD! I went to Rain Cafe after my exam with a 2 other medical students. I ordered the crusted French toast with eggs and ham on the side and my friend ordered a breakfast croissant with avocado. Overall, I would say the cost was about right with the portion size. However, $2 extra for a small slice of avocado is a bit over the top. I get that avocados tend to be an upcharge but 2 bucks is a bit much. As for my French toast, it was great at first but they must overdo the butter or salt because that toast was more salty than sweet, like salty as in I just had some salted chips salty. Other than that, I would give the taste of food here 3.5 stars. Regarding the service though, our server was polite and nice. She may have rushed us to order a little, but then again we were having a nice chat and may have been sidetracked with time. The reason I give this place 3 stars is because the food is not that special and more importantly, another older lady SERVER came up to me to tell me I couldn't sit in my chair Indian style and "you have to take your feet off our chair." That has got to be the oddest thing I have ever experienced at a restaurant. I sit like that everywhere! I like to shift how I sit, and it's never been a problem before so that was offputting and made me like my meal a even less. Now I was wearing jeans that covered my legs so it's not like I was being unladylike and had my legs wide open with a skirt on or something of that nature. I'm genuinely surprised that this happened but it was definitely irksome and upsetting. Don't go here because you'll love it as much as we did and then there will be longer lines next time we visit. We had a short wait, maybe 5 min, to be seated. The service was very quick and courteous. Food was great. I had steak and eggs and my wife had an omelette. Kids had pancakes and waffles. I helped them finish, both were great. We will eat here again next time we are in town. Best breakfast I've had in some time, not counting when I'm at home and we cook our farm fresh eggs and my homemade bacon.
