Raag is the new edition of Indian restaurants to the twin cities (MN) located on 50th France, Edina. The place is set up bright and nice, with a trendy bar counter. Appetizers we tried were Alaskan Crab cakes, Blackened Chicken Tandoori and Lamb Chops all tasted good, ending the main course with Chicken dum biryani-not a regular biryani and Lamb Yakhni Biryani was so flavorful. Disclaimer for those reading this. I'm an Indian cook and both my partner and I are big foodies and we love to cook good Indian food. So, we can often be over critical of Indian food restaurants in US. Having said that, I found Raag to be a breath of fresh air amidst all the really disappointing Indian food outlets in Minneapolis. It's definitely overpriced but I liked my chuski sangria. The Jaltarang which is like an American version of pani puri had 2 very nice flavours out of 5. We were surprised with the kadhi we ordered on a whim. It was really good and flavourful. The mutton we ordered was okay. Bread was nice and fresh. Over all it was one of the better Indian food experiences I've had in US but the 4 stars only because it certainly was extremely over priced. read more

I am a big fan of Indian food and have traveled extensively throughout India eating traditional food from across the country - so I can be skeptical of traditional food with a "modern twist." Luckily, this place exceeded my expectations and left me extremely satisfied while being tasty and beautiful. We got the papadam, spring veggie and fig kofka, saag paneer w a side of garlic and butter naan- all were exceptional! The sauce in the kofka was great. Drinks took a while to arrive and the waiters seemed eager to push you to your next order/take the bill, but it's expected when there's a crowd of people at the door trying to get a table! I would give 0 stars if I could, but the food was amazing. Unfortunately, the service WAS HORRIBLE AND DISRESPECTFUL. and we left disappointed and disrespected. Immediately when we walked in we got a standoffish and unwelcoming vibe, sort of like we didn't belong there. We were dressed up nicely, but it seemed they thought we couldn't foot the bill. The waiter was extremely rude to us. At one point we were trying to decided how many Naan to get and he choose for us, snickering. After receiving our food, he never returned to our table even though he kept glancing at it. We are all women of color (two of us South Asian). Two white women were seated behind us and he paid extra attention to them. The difference in treatment was very apparent. He was very attentive to him, kept returning, and making jokes. We had to ask people getting our plates for desert and the check. At one point even the manager had to come and get our desert. Through body language it was more of "what do you want?" We ended up spending way more time than we should have. We spent $100 on this meal but the service was horrible. The people giving and taking our plates were great, the servers not so much (especially the tall guy with the cool hair!). We left thinking? "Wow, here we are trying to support and new age Indian cuisine, and people from our background basically spit in our faces." I would not recommend this to anyone in the south asian community.... maybe Edina folks would appreciate it. It was peaceful in the dining area, so we later called to let the people know of our experience. They said they "would take care of it" and nothing really came of it. The food was sooooooooooo good! We were in love with everything. It was a special dinner for me and my friends because it was a dinner to celebrate our University graduation. We loved the food so much, it was an explosion of flavors in our mouth, but we left with such a distasteful taste in our mouth we will not return. We had a lovely dinner at Raag tonight. It started with an aromatic dry ice centerpiece - for relaxation. We ordered the Great Indian Spice board, the paneer cannoli and the Spring vegetables and fig kofta - this has the most amazing sauce and you will need to order the garlic naan in order to eat every drop. The food is not traditional Indian but Indian inspired. What we ordered had a lot of depth but wasn't spicy. Delicious! The decor is beautiful- they did a great job at renewing the space. Came here this afternoon with my daughter for lunch. As we walked in, we were greeted by very friendly staff. They seated us right away! The decor is simple but beautiful and cozy. A very nice bar just off from the dining room. As we were seated and looking at the menu, a waitress brought a candle holder and as she is pouring a scented liquid into it that created a smoky dry ice affect she says this is to awaken our senses. The presentation of all dishes is just beautiful! I recommend the blackened tandoori chicken with eggplant puree..just excellent! We also had the samosas with duck confit..delicious! Then I had a dish with lamb scotch eggs with rice and a gravy...which seems like a strange combo, but it was so good! My daughter also had chicken soup that had cardamom and cinnamon. I highly recommend this restaurant! There are reasonably priced items and higher priced items on the menu..so a little something for everyone! Our waiters and waitresses waited on us hand and foot...but not to the point where it would be annoying. The manager came over to see how things were tasting. Great experience there! read more

Ever since I wrote these rave reviews, the food has been mediocre. Today I ordered my favorite egg dish. They cut the egg before sending it, so they obviously knew that the goat was dark purple. The outside was warm, but the meat was raw and ice cold. $22 for one egg and I had to microwave it. So sad. They must have lost their chef. Still, they sent me raw meat. I traveled 25 minutes away from home to eat at this place, and the destination was well worth the travel. From whimsical appetizers to zesty star anise infused drinks, Raag is the place to be. I began my dinner with a playful appetizer, Jal Tarang. Its respicy and fruity notes paired extremely well with the quinoa and chickpeas. I ordered one of Raag's signature cocktails named the Asian Superstar. It was a delicious play on tequila. Dinner finally arrives and the waiter sets down my Seafood Alleppey and proceeds to cover it in a extremely flavorful raw mango curry. Every single bite of this dish exuded an experience. Raag pairs it's delicious food with a even better staff. The staff were so nice and they displayed a very neat and steady service. They were even kind enough to honor my special requests notes in my reservation. I'm sad I didn't have time to enjoy dessert but I have something to look forward to next time. I commend Raag for being able to provide a service and experience like this one during these troubling times. For an hour I had the chance to focus on food and not what's going on in the world. AMAZING! We checked it out tonight after seeing it mentioned in MSP magazine. We loved the restaurant decor and ambiance - very classy and modern. The menu was innovative and creative. Our appetizers - smoked chicken was delicious, the samosas average. Main course was good, but the dessert was Incredible!!! We had the gulab Hanin cheesecake and we were in heaven ! We def plan to come back and visit again. The only area I would mention could use improvement is the service which was a bit slow. Finally on my Minneapolis trip I got a chance to try Raag. First, as soon as we entered it was packed and the ambience was really good for being an Indian restaurant. We ordered several appetizers including jal tarang and blackened chicken which both are must try. Then we ordered main course including various naans, dal makhni, butter chicken, kofta, and paneer. All were really good. Now come to service, that's where my issue was. Our reservation was at 8:30 Friday, and as soon as we were seated we felt we were being rushed to order and we ordered without taking too much of time. Once our main course was placed on table, server asked if we want to order more food, well how do I know if I haven't even started eating. I get it kitchen close at 9:30 then don't take reservations after 8 may be. The owner/manager was on our shoulders whole time which seemed little annoying. It felt like I just ate food but didn't get to experience the overall restaurant. I was going to try dessert but were being rushed out. Sorry will not come again. read more

The hubby and I went out for an early dinner and were wowed by Raag. Starting with location and parking(parking tends to be a pain at 50th): Location is 50th and France and plenty of parking in the back. Check. Ambiance was clean, airy, comfortable and peaceful. Check. To start us off, we were offered a dry ice with fragrant spices in a amber cauldron that "smoked" a very calming scent -loved this touch. Check! Then we chose a recommended small plate of chutney glazed pork spare ribs with apple slices and delicious potato "salad" which was a few potatoes marinated in yummy sauce - delish. We also ordered a sampling of naan which was also excellent. Check! Our main courses came and we both were very pleased. I ordered the Hudson Bay Shrimp Moilee medium spiced which I would order again. My husband ordered the Dum Ka Murgh which he liked very much and would order again. Our service was friendly and top notch with teaching of each question we had in regard to options and correct pronunciation of food titles. Check, check! I really like this restaurant. I order from here often-most often their chicken biryani and chicken tikka lababdar and naan. It's delicious and rich in flavor. Lately, their biryani has tasted very different so i'm not sure if they have a new cook, but I hope it changes back to the original taste. I will continue to order from here as I think they have the best Indian food in MN. I think the price of the dishes are higher than other Indian restaurants in the twin cities, but their menu is very unique and you won't be able to beat the flavor. I have been here twice now in two different settings. Right before the pandemic hit, we tried it. It was much better than when we had take out. The first time, we heard that the apps were delicious so we ordered several of them. We started off with the great indian crisp board - which is just a fancy way of saying the pappadum and different types of chutney. The presentation was excellent because it came on a wooden indian board with several different types of pappadum and fusion chutneys (it was overpriced, but it was good). I got excited when I saw the da-belly sliders. I grew up eating this, and it was delicious and spicy. We also had the tandoori lal mirch ka paneer - this was ok. I expected a lot more from it, but I did like the chutney that they brought to add more flavor to it. For the main entree, we had the spring vegetable and fig kofta which was disappointing. The kofta are suppose to be savory vegetable dumplings, but was super sweet and not appetizing for me. This fusion was a fail. The accompany the curry we had the garlic naan which was good and the mushroom and truffle naan. The mushroom and truffle naan can be an entree dish on it's own with a little bit of a dipping sauce. Eating it there was good but not amazing; but I wanted to support local businesses so we ordered this to go. It was not an easy order to place. I do wish they had curbside pick up. We tried similar appetizers which were okay. We tried different entrees - the palak paneer which was ok not has good as other restaurants and the paneer cannelloni which was awful. I would not recommend that to anyone. We were definitely disappointed in the take out. If we are going to give this one more shot, we would try it at the restaurant - but to pay those high prices for mediocrity is not ok with me. read more

An amazing upscale Indian restaurant with an innovative twist to traditional Indian food. The ambiance is nice and classy when you walk in. The staff are nice, friendly and prompt with your order and helping you with the menu. A friend and I came here on a Sunday night for dinner. We ordered the jal tarang (or pani puri). The decor was beautiful as they poured herbed hot water in a bowl of dry ice as they came in with the jal tarang. It created a beautiful and unique sight on the table (see picture). The pani puri were definitely on the sweeter side but delicious. The puris on top of each shot glass was my favorite. We also ordered the Da-Belly Slider, which I strongly recommend. It was absolutely delicious and perfectly spicy! The sauce that came with it was nice too. Would definitely order this again. For our entree, we ordered the Spring Vegetables & Fig Kofta, Raag Palak Paneer, Garlic naan and the mushroom naan. The kofta was my favorite dish!! It was spiced just perfect and I loved the tomato based gravy. The paneer in the palak paneer was nice and crunchy! The thought of mushroom naan might not sound appealing but I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend trying it! Will definitely come back to this restaurant again! read more

Would probably give 3.5 stars because we chatted with the owner during both our visits and he was extremely humble and receptive to our suggestions. Also the decor is nice- neither kitschy desi makeup of typical 'modern' Indian places, nor totally generic. But food can totally improve. The fiancee and I were looking forward to this place opening up. We went there once during the first week, and then again a month later- so sampled a number of dishes. While this place is really a welcome change to the drab Indian food scene in Minneapolis, they should really shed some of the unnecessary fanciness, both in plating and presentation, and focus on strengthening the flavors. Here's some highlights. Cocktails: The unsung hero! Extremely inventive compared to the food, and with a bit of polish they can compete with the best in town (think Colita). Lamb chops a la plancha: spice marinade was balanced and aromatic, meat soft and cooked well. Duck confit samosa: a bit oily, but the apricot chutney balances things out. Lamb shank nihari: meat was well-cooked and fall-of-the-bone soft. However the bulgur khichdi was too spiced, which made the whole dish heavy. Portion was very big as well. Fig kofta: Makhni sauce was flavorful. Lamb yakhni biryani: probably the most flavorless biryani I've ever had :( The owner said they dialed back on the spices, but this is one dish where you keep the spices same! They're all aromatic spices, so milder non-indian palates can handle it. Desserts: Puran poli borek is a good idea, but filling can be spiced more. Also matcha ice cream doesn't work. Kalakand millefeuille was meh. Overall: for the general customer who thinks all Indian food is curry, I think the food in Raag will be quite novel and they'll enjoy the different experience! Flavor-wise some kinks need to be straightened out, but definitely a step in the right direction for the minneapolis desi food scene. All the best to this new restaurant! read more
