Not my favorite Indian restaurant in MPLS but I like the cuisine so I might be back. The dishes were hit or miss. Some fantastic, others that you didn't want to finish.

Although I don't have much experience with Indian food, I'm really glad I checked this place out. It's a beautiful space with comfortable seating and tasteful decor. There are also spacious gender neutral bathrooms, which I appreciate! The food is flavorful and comforting. You get quite a bit and the prices are reasonable. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking for good Indian food!

Clay Oven seemed to be one of the best reviewed Indian spots in Minneapolis so I decided to give it a try. When I walked in it was pretty packed and the restaurant itself is actually pretty small. I was seated and we placed our orders. We tried the appetizer plate and it was just OK. I have eaten a lot of samosas in my life and these were pretty average. The pakora was also just OK. For the main dishes I ordered a special lamb dish and a beef curry. I asked for the lamb extra spicy and was disappointed with how mild it was. This is something I run into a lot in Minnesota. It feels like they really tone down the spice even when you ask for it spicier, which is unfortunate since I grew up eating this food and it always feels muted when I try the same dishes here. The flavor itself was pretty good though. The pricing is a bit silly in my opinion. A lot of these restaurants give very small portions for how much it costs. I guess that is because there are not many South Asian spots in Minnesota or Minneapolis in general so they can charge higher than what they probably should. They do have unlimited rice which I liked, and I also tried the butter naan which was good, though that is hard to mess up. The beef curry was also decent but again on the smaller side. Would I try this place again, yes for sure. Is it worth all the hype and the reviews, I do not think so. I have been to some fantastic South Asian restaurants in my life and this one feels OK, but due to its location I understand why it gets such high ratings considering the lack of availability and options in Minneapolis.

Chicken saag is so well done. Service can be a little slow but it is because everything is fresh. Worth the slight wait. Great fresh atmosphere. Best Indian in the downtown Minneapolis area. 1-7 spice levels. Fairly standard spice range.

This was hands down some of the best Indian food I've ever had! I don't eat Indian food often, but I would go back here in a heartbeat. My sister in law and nephew recommended we all go here before a concert. It was absolutely delicious. Fresh garlic naan, yum! Everyone in our party enjoyed the appetizers and their entrees. I ordered a vegetarian dish, the curry pakora which were veggie fritters simmered in tangy yogurt sauce thickened with chickpea flour and tempered with exotic spices. Amazing, the spice was perfect!!! My husband enjoyed a spicy okra curry dish and we shared some lamb biryani. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. We'll for sure be back to try some other dishes.

Food good but portions are tiny for the price. Lots of rice. Little of entree. We did take out which appears popular based on brown bags behind counter waiting for pickup

Food and Service are great. We decided to try this place because they offered Indian street food in their menu that we seldom see it in other Indian restaurant. Some of the dishes We tried: Lamb saag - amazing, would love its creamier but it's my personal preference Dahi Puri - never had this before and didn't expected it's cold dish! Biryani - good! Nothing special nothing bad

I came in for dinner on a Saturday night when there was a huge event going on at US Bank Stadium and parking rates were all five times the usual. I say this because my main takeaway from my first visit to Clay Oven is that they seemed very prepared to handle a busy dinner shift. I go to the Guthrie a lot and I'm a little embarrassed that I haven't tried to have dinner here sooner. I'll definitely return, probably next time I'm seen an evening Guthrie performance. This time I ordered Beef Vindaloo. It was nicely prepared & tasted really good, although it doesn't set itself apart from Vindaloo anywhere else. Vindaloo can run spicy to a challenging degree so I asked for a spice level of 3-out-of-7. I wish I'd gone spicier. But this is actually good news for anyone who is a little spice-shy; I think this kitchen is gentle in that area. I also got a kind of bread I haven't hat in an Indian restaurant before, Bhatura, which it turns out is like popover bread or Yorkshire pudding. It was cool, I wouldn't mind getting that again. This is in a clean and inviting urban building, and if it wasn't clear in my first paragraph, the service was outstanding. Quick and professional with an abundance of personnel on the floor. And the prices were very fair, which is another factor making me like the idea of coming here for dinner before another event. It's a large menu, which can be a red flag for some foodies, but I'm convinced I'll have a good time exploring it further.

Stand by .... .... ..... ...... Stand by .... .... ..... ...... Appetizer. Veggie Samosa - enjoyed the wrap. It was not thick so it did not overpower the potatoes. Lamb Biryani. Marinated Swai Fish dusted w/ Chickpea Flour & Deep Fried... Garlic Naan...

What a fun find. We drove past randomly one morning and thought Indian sounded fun so came back for lunch. We were seated right away and ordered so much because we couldn't decide what we wanted. Both chicken dishes were amazing. The naan was chewy and cooked to perfection. The ground chickpea balls were less than great, but that's more personal preference than anything. The smoothies with the special yogurt were not to be missed!

This place is not good. I am so disappointed by the reviews. Was very excited to try this place out with the high reviews but it is bland and expensive. Overall (C) So I don't mind Americanized Indian food - but this was tasteless. If you have ever had decent Indian food you will be disappointed. Food (C) The garlic naan was burnt on one side and didn't have enough garlicky taste. The keema samosas were decent. The chicken was bland and a small portion. Service (A) This was a bright spot - great service. Very friendly and nice Value (D) $33 bucks out the door for one person - super expensive and a ripoff. Small portion sizes and bad food Advice - if you had never had Indian food in your life you may like this place. But if you have ever had Indian food - skip this place. My recommendation would be to go the other Indian place down the street from them - Spice and Tonic (sp?!?). If this is what passes for excellent Indian food in Minnesota- there is an opportunity to do better. After looking at the reviews I should have believed the negative reviews. Most of the positive reviews were from Elites.

Chicken Makhani and Lamb Rogan Josh
    Leslie C.

We came for lunch on a random weekday and it was decent Indian option. No lunch menu so we ordered off the regular menu. Good for a quick meal with friends or date night. 2 curries (Lamb Rogan Josh and Chicken Makhani) and a roti came out to about $20 per person. The curries are individual portions although they do give you a lot of rice. We saw a few tables who brought their own Tupperware for leftovers. The flavors were good and the servers are helpful in recommending things to try out of their expansive menu. I will need to try their dosas in the future.

I didn't have a reservation and i could sit at the bar, but the server seeing it was just me, took me in to the bar area where there were some single high chair tables. I tried a local beer and then decided on a good old fashioned burger, but was able to subtitute my fries with mashed potatoes. Once the food was ordered it came out fairly quickly. Burger was awesome. I just didn't see condiments on the table, but I'm rather a plain jane for food, unless I had ordered the fries. I was wavering on dessert but then I saw the giant peanut butter cup filled with marshmallow fluff, so it was on. I was planning to come back to try the ricotta pancakes and bring back some peanut butter cups for my staff, but time got away from me. So if y'all are reading this review, is there a way I can get these shipped :) If in Minneapolis again will definitley be hitting this spot up again.

Southeast Asian food is where the Minneapolis food scene really shines, and Gai Noi did not disappoint. We were having a leisurely weekend day, so dropped by the restaurant around 4:30 in the afternoon for a late lunch/early dinner (lunner?). This worked out well in our favor, because we were seated right away, without the customary wait at peak hours, because this place does not take reservations. The restaurant interior is very interesting and is divided in multiple areas which almost feel like different restaurants. We were originally seated in a dark cozy corner, but noticed there was a beautiful sunroom on the second floor which was not yet full, and thankfully, were able to transfer over there for a more beautiful sunlit dining experience (so definitely ask!). We ordered drinks (my friend a cocktail, and me a Thai tea), a rice dish with minced chicken and an egg, a noodle soup dish, salmon skewer, and an eggplant sauce which came with sticky rice as a side. Everything was well made and delicious, although the fish sauce and lemongrass were quite overpowering in the noodle dish for us, and we did not finish it. The rice dish is our absolute favorite (my friend's standing order). The salmon skewer was well cooked, but in my opinion, the skewer flavors probably went better with other meat options, and overall was nothing to write home about. The eggplant sauce portion was very small, which we were initially very perplexed by, but it turned out to be very flavorful and spicy (in a good way), that the portion size turned out to be perfect, not to mention a pair perfectly with the sticky rice it came with in a very cute bamboo container. Our server told us to think of it like a salsa we could add to everything, and it was perfect. Overall, excellent experience although some food items were clearly better than others. (This is of course a preference thing. We saw Penang spaghetti was very popular amongst the other guests, but my friend did not like that at all the last time she was here.) Our bill came out to about $50 per person, which seemed reasonable for the experience. (Something like Hot Grainz in my mind is a similar type of cuisine, at a more affordable price). Will be back! Street parking (we were luckily able to snag a place right in front of the restaurant). I think coming during off peak is definitely a great idea if you can be flexible.
