Hands down a 10/10 restaurant in twin-cities area. Everyone working here is just so kind and periodically checked on us including the owner. The server accidentally gave us dessert before we got our food, and the owner told them to take it back so we can be served fresh. We got some combo meals that come with side dishes. Fish was sooo tender and sauce has a good mix of spice and sourness. Momo and mango lasi were also fresh and you can tell they are made in house. I can't believe I haven't been here before. THe Himalayan is a Nepalese/Himalayan restaurant on Lake Street. As a vegetarian, I was in heaven at the number of items that I could choose from. Thankfully, my companions were all willing to split dishes, so I could try more than one. We started out with the lentil green onion pancakes. They were don't earth than I had expected. I thought they would be more of a super crispy flat dish, but they have the substance of a real pancake, with savory flavors. Really wonderful. We ordered three entrées, including the jackfruit and the eggplant. The jackfruit was my absolute favorite, but that was not universal. I think it was very well well prepared, but not everyone likes jackfruit and not everyone loves those spices. But it made me so happy. The eggplant dish was pretty good, but the potato two eggplant ratio could be improved. A few too many potatoes and not enough eggplant. Otherwise excellent. The service was fine. My friend who visited from out of town specifically wanted to visit here because of the thukpa, which I thought was very tasty as well, upon trying it a bit. The dishes that I ordered, I found them to be mediocre to good overall, which is why I am giving this establishment a 4 rather than a 5 rating. Regardless, I know that they serve authentic Nepali food, so I would still recommend them to people, especially visitors. The momos were pretty good in a conventional way with the sauce included, and it was a pleasant experience consuming them. They weren't out of this world, which is not a bad thing here. I personally think maybe having 3 or 4 samosas would work better as an appetizer, and the potato and pea fillings were a bit plain, meaning underseasoned. Instead of getting goat curry as usual, I got the lamb curry this time, and it tasted pretty good in a conventional way as well. The lamb flavor along with the seasonings were there, along with the bones. Having rice with it was necessary. I thought having the extra diced tomatoes on top of the tomato curry sauce was pretty unique, but that could be because of my ignorance. As mentioned previously, I would definitely recommend this establishment to those that are looking for authentic Nepali food. We got so much food with the combo meal: choice of soup, 2 curries, a side, and dessert. We also added a naan that was crispy, chewy, and buttery. So good! Everything was delicious! Y'all know how I feel about Himalayan. Truly the best food in the world. Ellie put me on to the creamy Kathmandu curry a few years ago and that will forever be my go to, but the last two times I've been to Himalayan I've gone with people with dietary limitations or with Ellie so she just group orders :) and everything I try is just SO good. Today I had pyaazi, which was new to me. Probably something I never would have ordered for myself, but now I will be getting again. Service is always great. The owner always stops by the table at least once which is the best. He's so caring and you can always tell how much he cares about his restaurant and his customers. I haven't eaten inside in a few years, so can't talk that much on inside ambiance BUT the patio is so amazing. The flowers are so gorgeous and the new(ish) mural with the flowers and butterflies is so beautiful. Today we were there during golden hour and the mural was glowing. It's insane how nice and insulated feeling the patio is when you are on Lake St. Always gives such a lovely home cooked meal vibe. Very busy at the restaurant on Friday night at 6 pm. Lots of to go orders. Enjoyed the vegetarian momos, potato and portobello mushroom dish with rice and the daal soup. We came here on a Sunday early evening and got seated right away. Everything that we ordered was delicious. So delicious that I forgot to take a picture! The place is exactly the same a few years ago. The service was a little slow but we expected that since this was a family restaurant. There was a mention that the owner was friendly but we didn't get to experience that. He wasn't rude but he wasn't friendly either. During the meal, I saw from the corner of my eyes he was chit chating with a table across from us. He didn't come over to our table. If you're looking for real, authentic Nepali food in Minneapolis, Himalayan Restaurant is the place to go. The momos here are seriously the best in town--we had the Chicken Kothe and Jhol Momos, and both were packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. Total comfort food. The Aloo Achaar was another hit--spicy, tangy, and super satisfying. Definitely worth adding to your order. We also tried the jackfruit entrée for the first time. It was pretty good and had a nice texture, though the flavor could've been a little stronger. Still cool to see something different on the menu. Delicious food and staff were super nice. Definitely recommend the momo or kothe. I like fried dumplings better so I preferred the kothe but both were delicious. You can choose spice level and I personally think mild and mild-medium were pretty equivalent so if you like a little spice go for at least medium level spice. read more

Stopped by here on a snowy Sunday. Just happen to be driving by and saw the sign and thought, hmm momos sound good today. Its a deceivably big place as they have a pretty big back room. It's clean and has interesting decor. They have some specials on the boards at the entrance and a full menu. We were seated right away. They got us the menus and water and the server was very helpful when asking questions regarding the menu items. We were decidedly in the mood for non-Indian fare so concentrated on the Nepali cuisine. We ordered steamed momos and chili momos along with kothe for appetizers. There was a choice of meat or veggie and we went with chicken for the momos and lamb for the kothe. For the entrees, we ordered the thukpa with chicken and lamb kebabs. The food took a few minutes but it was all fresh and hot. The momos were good but the chili momos were really good. The kothe was very good too and a hit with the kids. So much so that we ordered another order. The sauce on the chili momos was very flavorful with a hint sweet and spicy and we used that with everything, especially the lamb kebabs. Which is good because the kebabs themselves didn't have much flavor. They were grilled well and the meat was tender but there just wasn't enough flavor in the kebabs themselves. The momo sauce and green chutney helped but overall was a little disappointing. The thukpa was tasty. Didn't quite know what to expect and what we got was a noodle dish which was a cross between a pho and ramen with big chunky vegetables. The broth was very flavorful and the chicken tasty. The vegetables were soft but not mushy. The service was acceptable. Think they only has two servers for everyone and we did have to ask for napkins and water a couple times and get their attention. But they were courteous and helpful. Overall, it was a nice lunch and we would go back there for the appetizers and try out some of the other entrees. Wow. I can't get over how good this food was. My local Minneapolis friend who also works at the Himalayan took us tourists here for an appetizer platter and some delicious drinks. We ended up eating lots more than just the platter - Naan, spiced potato salad, chicken tika, and lalmohan (milk balls) for dessert. We came at a slow time and the help staff was so friendly and helpful. The chiya (chai) was delicious - not sweet at all as expected but a little sweetener made it even better. The mango yogurt drink is highly reccomended if you're a sweet tooth. The decorations and vibe of the place are very authentic and comforting. The price was very fair as well. Choose from the soup list, the side list and dessert list. We thought the soup, sides, and desserts would be chosen already not that we had an option. We weren't really told how the ordering worked for the combo. So the person taking our order seems a little impatient? Anyways. I think the dishes are made a little smaller maybe compared to if you were ordering 1 entree. But you get a lot. Momo- decided to try this since saw many good reviews. We couldn't decide on flavor so got all 4 (lamb, chicken, veggie, meat aka pork). They were interesting (not a fan of the lamb though). Mango lassi- it was not bad. Typical lassi I would say. Soup- taste sort of like lenti? Mango pudding - interesting take to mango pudding. A unique taste I never had before Tofu with potato- didn't realized when we did the combo it was small platter. So it was small lol. There was maybe 5-6 pieces of tofu and rest as you can see were potatoes aka carbs. Wish it had more tofu than potatoes. I thought it was an ok dish. Chicken Marsala- definitely recommend: tasted awesome and we really enjoyed it with rice and naan. This was a decent size platter compared to the veggies which is better because it's meat lol. The food was very delicious. The momo were very good, i prefer the fried momo, it is crunchy and delicious. The regular momo (steam) was good and juicy, however i like crunchy. The chicken saag was pretty good, i ask for hot and it wasnt that hot. A good kick, but very tasty. It had somewhat a smoking taste and it was thick. You can definitely get your hands dirty. The chicken tikka masala was delightful as well. It was a good thick and well balance of flavor. As for the biryani , it was oka, i dont like it by itself or with the yogurt like sauce. It doesnt taste well together in my opinion. However, other people might like it . It does have a medicine like taste. Like a bitterness to the flavor, however i mix it with the chicken tikka masala and it made it taste a lot better. Not bitter or a weird medicine taste. Adding the chicken saag to it will definitely change the flavoring of the biryani. The garlic naan was good, it was crunchy however, it is very plain, you cant taste the garlic at all. I have had better where you can actually taste the garlic. Overall, i gave it a four because of services. We waiting 45 mins before our order were taken. It just took so long for them to get to us, i understand there was a good amount of people, however everyone had to wait awhile like we did. The food took forever to come out as well. My friend and i were there for almost three hours. Nothing wrong with that, however we were just starving at one hr and a half. Visited 5/4/24. All I can say is how soon is too soon to go back?! This place was a delight. They have a lot first off with lots of street parking available as well, which always impresses me. We had a bigger group of 6 on a Sunday evening but they accommodated us with ease. Service was great with awesome recommendations. We started off with full orders of the vegetarian momos and kothe. My sister was super impressed as a vegetarian with all of there options. To eat, three of us got the chicken tikka masala, one got the palak paneer, one got the Kathmandu curry, and the other got the green curry with chicken added in. We also got sides of garlic naan. Himalayan restaurant offers flavors of Nepal, Tibet & India! I like spice, the hotter the better and this is one of a few Indian restaurants where you can control your heat which I love! Such a wide assortment of curry, vegetarian options, mouth watering garlic naan and my favorite, their Himalayan platter that has momos, samosas, and pyaazi (onion crisps)! Visited Minneapolis for a few days and saw this place while driving. Our local friend recommended it highly so we got takeout for lunch. It's in an area near some cool antique shops and bookstores. We ordered the momo (steamed) and the creamy Kathmandu curry. The momo are basically bao filled with Nepalese and Indian ingredients. It comes with a tomato cilantro sauce that is absolutely amazing. The creamy Kathmandu curry is a vegetable curry, kind of similar to a korma or tikka masala. Incredibly flavorful and filling. You get a good amount of food for the price (around $15/entree). The restaurant has a nice interior and outside seating area. My final review: The food here is so good, I wouldn't know how to act if I lived in Minneapolis. read more

What a lovely spot! My family and I were here this past weekend for lunch and enjoyed the various dishes here! We ordered garlic naan, paratha and chicken tikka masala (no spice) for our kids. They loved it! For my lunch - I ordered tandoor chicken. A bit dry but overall the flavoring was delicious. There were plenty of vegan and vegetarian options as well. I worked here for years when I lived in Minneapolis and now I come back for food every chance I get when I'm home. All the food is incredible, especially the momos (you can ask for chili momo if you like spice), the creamy curries, and all homemade drinks are incredible. So many vegetarian/vegan options and the owners always make sure everyone enjoys their food and their experience. Beautiful art, so many plants on the patio, and a clean and comfortable space. Although the colors are rather plain (most of our orders look yellowish) but it is the taste that count. The curry, the coconut, pancake paneer taste exploded in your mouth. Both were juicy and my favorite was of course the Fried Momo. You can choose the type of protein you'd like, vegetarian options available! Chicken Tikka Masala - You can never go wrong with this dish. A classic and hearty meal. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish as it helped the Chicken Biriyani taste so much better. Chicken Biriyani - This dish was surprisingly a little butter for me. Thankfully, it was served with a yogurt sauce and I mixed in the Chicken Tikka Marsala that mellowed out the bitterness. Chicken Saag - This definitely had a very strong taste that I was not familiar with and thankfully my friend enjoyed it more than I did. Service does take awhile- we did wait awhile for our orders to be taken and the food to be served, as well as to ask for the check- so don't be in a rush when you dine here. We were seated outside with many plants in the quiet space. We ordered the Kathmandu Momo, the lamb tikka masala, and the chicken curry. The spices were phenomenal. *Take-out experience during COVID-19 Review* I have had Himalayan on my list especially to treat myself to my version of winter comfort food. Unfortunately, I didn't get the opportunity to experience their in person dining. However, I did take advantage of fulfilling my winter food craving for some wholesome flavorful Indian/Nepalese/Himalayan food. I have to admit the food was pricey for the portions but I understand that the hospitality industry has been hit very hard during COVID-19, especially restaurants so I can empathize with them. Plus, the food was good and they were accommodating so I will be lenient. Things I was happy about: 1. I accidentally ordered the Choyala Kebab instead of the Choyala Lamb and was able to call the restaurant to let them know about the mistake and they were able to do a easy swap, no issues. 2. I read that the delivery usually takes longer than expected but was happy to report that I got my food within 30 mins of my order. 3. I was going to order the Basmanti rice but decided not to to keep cost down and was ready to use my own rice at home but was pleasantly surprised to get the complimentary rice with each dish. Overall, my Lamb Choyala and Curry Goat, both ordered at the Hot level were good. I preferred the Curry Goat and if I order again will stay at the Hot level because it was enough spice without making my nostrils flare or make me tear up.
