Stopped by Midtown Global Market and decided to give a different place a try. The beef tagine looked interesting, so I ordered that, the salmon fillets and salad sampler. First, the beef was soo soft and flavorful. I cut it with a plastic fork. And mmmmm good. It reminded me of a super long, slow cooked beef stew, but way better. I don't know how many years I have been here, but suffice it to say that since coming here before the pandemic, I have been in love with this place, and post-pandemic is no exception. This is easily one of my favorite restaurants in the entire Twin Cities, and everytime I come to the Midtown Global Market, despite many choices, I would almost exclusively come here for food. I have been an avid fan of the beef couscous because the beef was very tenderly cooked and extremely tasty. All the vegetables and the couscous along with the beef were able to provide another layer of flavor if one wished for it. I have also tried the lamb shank tagine before, and the tenderness of the lamb was no exception. Coming here has never failed to be an amazing experience. The owner has also been extremely nice everytime, showing lots of care and hospitality. Once after finishing a plate, seeing that I finished it very fast, he provided me with another plate on the house. I thought it was very wholesome. It definitely transported me back to Morocco. I finally got to try Moroccan flavors because my mom was told they had really good lamb here. I brought her here for lunch and we both enjoyed our meals. My mom isn't very open to trying new cuisines, so I was not expecting her to be amazed but she was! Service was great, the owner is very kind to his clients and definitely appreciative. We got there during lunch time, so he had many orders and due to making us wait a bit longer he brought us a sampler plate. Honestly, we didn't mind waiting but we appreciated the appetizer. Mom ordered the lamb shank tagine and the meat was perfectly cooked, melts in your mouth and lightly seasoned to perfection. Comes with vegetables and cooked with lots of care/love it seems. It comes with the lamb, rice, and these delectable garnishes like olives and other pickled things that just go pow in your mouth. Of course there a little bits of raisins or currants...well little sweet things. Mix up your bites to get a party in your mouth. The lamb is so tender. Tagine is a slow cooking process with the clay vessel called by the same name. I think they will have this dish in heaven. Oh they will validate your parking. What a lovely little restaurant. This place kind of creates a little vibe of its own tucked in the midtown global market. One of the best things about this place is that in most hipster or trendy or anglicized areas you won't really find typical Moroccan Cuisine - and if you do it will be very expensive. But this is affordable and it is tasty. Now it's not the best Moroccan I've had (neither food nor person) and the stuff in Paris and of course in North Africa itself (yes, I've been to Morocco and Tunisia, which makes singing an Arabic tune-easier), and all over the place for that matter I have found some pretty damn good ones. But this is definitely the best African food I've had so far in Minnesota - and yes I know, isn't it crazy that there is African food in Minnesota! Moroccan food - like most Arabic food - is a heavenly, perfect cuisine all unto itself and I highly recommend you come and give it a try. Wow... speechless. We have eaten at most of the places in the Midtown Global Market but it's been a while since we've been there. Moroccan Flavors sounded awesome and it didn't let us down. They have a really cute space in the market. We ordered the lamb shank tagine and were floored by both the flavors and the service. My favorite type of meals are where the plate is beautiful and everything compliments one another. That was this plate. It was perfect for sharing as well. The lamb was fall off the bone tender and the lamb and gravy was flavorful and crave-worthy. It came with rice, chick peas, cabbage, carrots and apricot. Service was fast and friendly. This was one of the tastiest (and healthiest) meals while crossing the country on a road trip. Every meal was an outdoor picnic and after searching "healthy" on Yelp, Moroccan Flavors was the clear pick for our picnic in Minneapolis. It also didn't hurt that they are located in the charming International Market. This meal was a beautiful combination of flavor and nutrients. I ordered a vegetarian platter with couscous and several veggie dishes like beets, carrots and so on. The thing I especially loved about the veggie sides was the variety of pickled vs. roasted. I'm still smiling thinking about those pickled veggies... It's also worth noting that Moroccan Flavors offers some traditional Moroccan desserts like orange slices with cinnamon (brought back memories of my trips to Morocco!). My whole meal was under $10 and you could tell it was a labor of love. Great news is, while you're visiting Moroccan Flavors you can check out the other stalls in the market. Moroccan Flavors is inside the Midtown Global Market and has been here since April 2016. Moroccan food traditionally is a blend of different cuisines and cultures since the country is found on the northern tip of Africa where you have the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea that has influences from Europe and the Mediterranean. Common spices include cumin, saffron, turmic, cardamon, ginger and paprika. A well known dish of Moroccan food is a tagine, which is a delicious slow cooked stew with some type of meat (typically lamb or chicken), vegetables, dried fruit, nuts and spices. This dish is named after the vessle that it is cooked in, which is a conical clay pot it cooks in to give you that soft, fall of the bone, tender meat, delicious flavor and aroma. My husband and I decided to grab an early dinner/ late lunch here on a Saturday, a little before 4 pm. After looking over the menu, we ended up ordering: Lamb Tagine, $12.95 prior to tax- Braised lamb shank, served with carrots, yam and garbanzo beans on a bed of turmeric flavored rice. That lamb was outstanding and fall off the bone incredibly tender. The lamb was flavorful but allowed for the nature gamey flavors of the lamb to shine through. The portion size of this dish is plenty for 1 person. The rice was tender and so were the vegetables. I loved the variety of sides in this dish. Vegetable Tagine, $8.95 prior to tax- Not that I am vegetarian, but since my husband ordered lamb, I thought it would be nice to also share a vegetable dish. This dish had carrots, cabbage, garbanzo beans, marinated olives and some other kind of greens that was served on a bed of turmeric flavored rice. I truly loved all of the flavors and textures of the different offerings in this dish. You could definitely taste the turmeric, cardamon and cumin, but it wasn't overpowering or overbearing. I thought it was interesting though to have served cold olives with the rest of the food items being hot. I think I would have preferred for the olives to be heated. Hot Mint Tea, $2 prior to tax- My husband wanted some tea and I actually really liked it. It reminded me of a milk tea, but with mint. This tea was creamy and did not taste like the usual mint tea that I have had at American restaurants. ---------------------------- (Total= $25.82 after tax) After we paid for our food, we sat at a table and food was brought out to us in less than 5 minutes (which surprised me it was such a short wait). If you want to experience the same dining experience, consider dining at Moroccan Flavors the next time you are at the Midtown Global Market. Don't let the humble surroundings dissuade you. This is skillfully prepared, authentic Moroccan food using fresh ingredients and high end spices. We started with the assorted vegetable platter. It came with 8 different vegetables, with a variety of seasonings, then finished with a drizzle of olive oil. Just a wonderful way to take in a variety of healthy vegetables. Our other entree was chicken over couscous. It had cabbage, and other goodies. While it was seasoned differently from the vegetables, it was equally delicious. From the "sides" part of the menu, we chose almonds, prunes, and apricots. This could just as well have been in the "dessert" section. The almonds had a roasted flavor, with prunes that were partly stewed, and partly whole. The apricots added their sweet tang. All together, a very satisfying meal. read more
