Wow wow wow - first time trying Sri Lankan food, and it was incredible! House of Curry is an authentic Sri Lankan restaurant in Rosemount. I agree with another reviewer. It's often compared to Indian food and Thai food but it's truly distinct from both. What we tried: -Lamb kottu (diced roti stir-fried with scrambled egg, onions, chillies, spices, and lamb) -Idiyappam aka string hoppers (rice noodle discs) which we paired with fish curry -Lamb coconut curry -Vegetable rolls Things to know: -I'd recommend calling to confirm hours because at this time, google, Yelp, and the store sign all show different hours. -As of 5/2021, takeout only! -Spiciness levels: mild, medium, hot -Some of the dishes come with coconut sambol which is a spicy condiment that looks like crab meat but is actually made of fresh coconut and red chilis -Menu is easily vegan friendly! Amazing experience for dinner last night. I already want to go back!

Excited to find this place. Went with a woman from Sri Lanka today to the Sunday buffet. Highly recommend the brunch as it was a great way to try more dishes as I had never had Sri Lankan food before. The flavors were deep and intense and soooo good. Some, like the chicken biryana, reminded me of southern Indian cuisine. It was great. Could not try everything (my fault) but the fried cauliflower was a show stopper for me. It's just amazing. Looking forward to trying more based on the reviews here. Shrimp was divine, the devilled chicken was so good and unique. Curry was thin; I would have expected a bowl or rice, but there was none. Dal was very good and reminded me of India. I will definitely be back to try more dishes!

First, a pet peeve, ma bete noir, mi queja habitual. If it's your first time eating a specific ethnic cuisine, you're not honestly in a position to evaluate whether it's authentic or not. You can of course, tell us if it tastes good to you. I would never presume to declare a place to have authentic White American home cooking, my mother was Japanese, our neighbors Jewish, I wouldn't know authentic White Midwestern home cooking from Kraft macaroni and cheese in a box. I've heard it involves a can of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom in every entrée but since my White friends laugh after they say that, I'm not really sure that it's true. Now if your name is Shamil, you're qualified to tell us, he did, and he's right. This is authentic Sri Lankan. Authentic doesn't necessarily mean good. My aunt Kamala's cooking is authentic Sri Lankan, but after a few decades and two English-Desi children, I'm afraid it just isn't very good. Rebecca clearly knows Sri Lankan, gives a great review, she seems to have lived there a while. House of Curry is both authentic, and good, thank you Shamil and Rebecca. And he is also correct that the prawn curry is delicious, but I question the judgement involved in Yelping that it's better here than his wife's cooking. If she's Sri Lankan, yes a very honest people but in most cultures husbands shouldn't be comparing their wives' cooking unfavorably. I'm a sociologist, trust me on this one. There aren't a lot of choices for authentic Sri Lankan in North America, there are maybe a dozen in New York City, twice as many in the second largest Sri Lankan city in the world, Toronto/Mississauga and once in a while one pops up elsewhere. This is the closest one to Milwaukee so how good is it? I'll be making the trip again here just to eat here. For appetizers, the fish cutlets and papadum are excellent. The chicken curry (on the bone of course) is very good, I agreed with Shamil already about the shrimp, both the coconut curry, and the deviled are perfect. The dal is also delicious, Sri Lankan is not that different from Tamil Nadu or Kerala versions of lentil curry but distinct from northern Indian styles. The Pol Sambol, my favorite, was good, I've had better. I was disappointed in the kottu, but in all fairness that's a Sri Lankan street food, like hot dogs are to New York City, or Italian beef is to Chicago. Mine was overdone on a busy day, this wouldn't be a problem on the streets of Columbo. The potato curry was a little bland. They have string hoppers but not regular appam. For dessert the wattlapan (we always called it "What'll happen?" which did not amuse any of my aunties) is some of the best I've ever had. The rice isn't Sri Lankan rice, which is pretty hard to get here, though the authentic Sri Lankan restaurant in Madison Wisconsin was able to get it until they closed down. KJ's Curry Bowl (the Madison place) suffered in part from negative reviews because they weren't like other Indian or South Asian restaurants (Sri Lankan cuisine doesn't include basmati rice, ghee, or Indian flatbreads... that's my naan disclosure statement). Please, look at a map before coming here, yes Sri Lanka is part of South Asia, but South Asia is a big and diverse sub-continent. The further south you get the hotter the food is, and served properly Sri Lankan food is hotter than any cuisine except Thai or Vietnamese (when served authentically). If you come here with White people, you're just not going to get it authentically spicy even if your name is Rohan. The one negative is why this isn't a five star restaurant. They rely on local, White, volunteer waitstaff who have not been trained in any way. The fellow was very nice, but he didn't know what any of the dishes were, didn't know anything about Sri Lankan cuisine, and didn't seem to realize that a customer could have had any experience with Sri Lankan cooking. This was frustrating. When the Chief of Staff tried greeting him in Sinhalese, then Tamil, he didn't even acknowledge she was trying to talk to him with a simple "I'm sorry I don't speak Singhalese or Tamil. This isn't just a problem for someone who knows what he wants, I felt bad that the couple near me who were trying Sri Lankan food for the first time weren't given any introduction or orientation to our cuisine, no suggestions for the first time, and in fact they thought they were in an Indian restaurant and this misconception was never addressed.

String Hoppers Meal with a Vegetable Roll

I've been going here for years now (since around the time they opened) and I absolutely love it! Sri Lankan food is AMAZING, Amd this place does not disappoint! I can't say enough good things about the food here. My go to meal here is the string hoppers, the string hoppers are like a thin patty made of thin white rice noodles (it comes with like 12). I love that this meal comes with a curry sauce, Kiri Hodi (a sweet thinner sauce) and Coconut Sambol. I layer on as much of each that I want on my string hoppers and the combo is DELICIOUS! My daughter has tried a few different dishes here and loves them all. She's done the Ala Hodi (potato curry), the chicken curry and the Dhal Curry. She normally gets roti on the side as well. We normally get a side of vegetable rolls to start with. Then if we are looking for a little extra we get a Mango Lassi to start or finish the meal with. It is like a sweet mango smoothie, but yogurt based and thinner texture.

Dhal curry ($11), vegan by default. Flavorful and light.

Sri Lankan food is hard to find in the US, so I was really excited to try House of Curry in Rosemount. This place is definitely worth a trip to the suburbs. We started with the vegetable rolls ($4) which are basically breaded egg rolls filled with spiced vegetables. They were delicious and vegan by default. The dhal curry ($11, vegan by default) is light and flavorful and nicely seasoned. It went really well with the godhamba roti ($2.50), a thin, flaky and slighty chewy bread exclusive to Sri Lanka. The ala hodi ($9) is a coconut milk soup filled with potatoes. I thought this dish would be thicker, more like a curry, but it's still delicious and deeply savory. Lastly, the bandakka thelada ($10) was vegan, like much of the rest of the menu, and nicely done. Okra is hard to cook well, but they do a good job with it here. The only drawback was that the kottu roti here is made with egg and can't be modified to be vegan. That was a bummer, as this is the national dish of Sri Lanka and one of my favorites. House of Curry is a great spot and makes excellent Sri Lankan food. Check it out.

    String Hoppers with Fish Curry

It was our first time visiting this restaurant. We ordered Fish Curry, Fish Cutlets, String Hoppers, Pol Roti and Chicken Kotu. All of them were great. We loved the Fish Cutlets especially. It was made with potatoes, greepeas and Fish which makes it a great snack. The Fish Curry with String Hoppers is an excellent combination. That's a must try! My colleagues strongly recommended the Chicken Kotu. We liked it however we would prefer the ones that we usually get from one of the Indian restaurants. Overall this restaurant is amazing with great flavors. Update 08/02/2019: Added more pics of other items from their menu

Two veg appetizers: vegetable pastry and vegetables rolls. Delicious.

Always excited to see Sri Lankan restaurants and this Kandy girl was even more delighted to see Ayubowan on the cover of the menu. Most the restaurants we encounter in North America are Tamil. We ordered a couple of short eats which were deliciois and piping hot from the fryer. We were allowed to swap out the meat for am extra veggie dish in the rice and curry platter, choosing green beans, eggplant, and red lentils. The pol roti entree usually comes with fish but when I asked to leave that out, our server (the owner?) brought us potatoes as a substitution, which was very kind. Finally, ordered a side a coconut sambol to round out the meal. We were asked how spicy we wanted the food and I ordered it medium because I'm out of practice. When I lived in Sri Lanka, my amma forced me to eat spicy food to develop my tolerance and it worked, BUT use it or lose it. It's been 15 years and this white girl doesn't often have occasions so eat food as spicy as Sri Lankans do on a daily basis. Medium is still a decent amount of spice. The coconut sambol is very spicy, so if you're with a mixed group, some liking hot and some liking mild, get the coconut sambol and you can turn up the heat as much as you like. Made with fresh shredded coconut, it's cool and spicy all at once. Nothing else like it. The green beans were on point, just like Amma and Anula used to make when I lived with a host family. The other curries were quite good as well. It was very quiet at 4:30pm. This was our last stop before the airport, so we didn't mind having the place to ourselves after a hectic weekend. Our water glasses stayed empty for awhile but when I was seen trying to fill it myself from the pitcher, our host was very apologetic and came to the table shorty to fill our glasses again. Worth a visit. Sri Lankan food isn't like any other food; I wouldn't compare it to Indian food just because it's curry and I wouldn't compare it to Thai food just because it has coconut milk. The spices and flavors are unique and wonderful, just like the island of Sri Lanka.

    Coconut Curry with potatoes

Excellent food! Fast and kind service. This is a HIDDEN GEM!!! If you haven't tried Sri Lankan food, this should be your go to! Lamb Kottu is out of this world. But do not skip the fried cauliflower. So much deep and rich flavor. Coconut curry is also wonderful. You can pick your spice level, so do not be nervous!! Great for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Small dining area with comfortable seating. Highly highly recommended. My whole family walked away stuffed and happy!

Was here for a private event. First time trying Sri Lankan food but this is vegetarian paradise. Had goat (maybe lamb?) curry and fish curry but I could survive on the non-meat items alone. The Pol Roti was one of my favorites. The fried okras is something I'll have to learn because I don't think it would be easy to live without them.

Assorted selections from the weekend buffet.

They share an entrance with another business, once you enter turn left into the bar. We were greeted and chose to sit near the fireplace. There's 2 different rooms and each room has a bar. The service was very good even though it only looked like 3 people were working - they were very busy but did not show it They have an extensive wine list which is nice and decent price range from $12 upwards. The Rosè I had was pretty good and the Cab Sauv my date had was good too! The music was pretty loud - only on weekends I think , but when the crowds dispersed it felt more like an intimate wine bar- so I imagine during the week this would be a great place to meet up with friends and family. Did not get to try any food as we had just come from dinner but they did have some amazing smelling bread boards I would be willing to try! The owners are a husband and wife team who are very down to earth and like they get to know everyone who visits A cute place in Shoreview- when in the area I will stop by
