R&S Services LLC services came to my home to provide an estimate on cleaning my wood-burning fireplace and chimney. The technician, Mikey, indicated there were cracks that needed repair and one of the chipped blocks at the opening of the fireplace would cost $5,000 to repair; I declined. He asked for $1500 for a deep clean and repairing small cracks, including a warranty, and I declined. He asked what a fair price would be, and I agreed to pay $950 for cleaning and small cracks repair, minus the warranty. My wife and I both heard him say, "I'll do it." He did not provide a written estimate for the services he agreed to perform; my mistake for not stopping everything then. As he began the work, he pulled out tools from a brand new tool bag, and at least 2 of the tools were still in their packaging. One tool was a Milwaukee Fastback Cutter. He couldn't figure out how to use it and asked me if I knew how to get the razor out. I explained that the razor had to be purchased in addition to the cutter and inserted into it. He had no razors, so I loaned him my cutter. It seemed like he was new to the job. He spent about 45 minutes cleaning the fireplace and the chimney. The fireplace itself wasn't very clean, but the chimney had been brushed. I asked if he had repaired the cracks, and he said the crack repairs were not included. Awkward; I told him that was what we had agreed to, and it would have been better to have a written estimate before work started. He politely apologized for the misunderstanding, but refused to repair the cracks unless I paid an additional $550. I paid him $950 because I did not want to argue there in my home, I just wanted him to leave. I wanted to give R&S Services LLC a chance to make this right so I called the main office phone number. The man who answered said he was "Mike", but he did not identify his business. I thought I had the wrong number. Initially, it sounded like he was talking through a robotic AI voice generator, difficult to understand. I had to ask if it was R&S Services, and he finally acknowledged in his actual voice and with an irritable tone. When I attempted to explain what happened, he became defensive and hostile; totally unprofessional. I hung up the phone. I never had a chance to say what I wanted to make it right. My wife and I received a barrage of phone calls and angry text messages over the next hour. That was WAY over the line! "Mike", the boss, sent an angry text afterwards and accused me of being "disrespectful", and said that the cracks were repaired. "Mikey" the technician sent a text, too. Though Mikey was respectful in his tone and politely apologized for the confusion, he admitted he DID NOT repair the cracks and maintained it was not included with the $950. While the ash was removed from the fireplace and the chimney was swept, I think anyone can agree that it did not look clean and the cracks remain; see photos. I discovered later that the flu lever had become dislodged or damaged during the cleaning, the lever was swinging freely. The flu was operating fine prior to that. Looking back at their online reviews, I notice most are 1 to 3 months old, and the oldest reviews are 7 months old. Red flags! I will never recommend this business to anyone. We contacted R&S Services to perform a HVAC inspection and cleaning assessment after we discovered and remediated a mold issue at our home. They sent Daniel the technician. He was super friendly, positive, professional and knowledgeable. He performed a thorough inspection at several vents and in the attic. Ultimately he determined that our system was new, clean and not in need of service at this time. He recommended a few minor maintenance activities that we could perform on our own. And to have the system inspected again in a few years. I would recommend this company simply for the fact that they didn't recommend unnecessary work, especially when they could have considering our current situation. read more
