Unfortunately, he identified some structural concerns during the initial part of his inspection that will need to be addressed before we are able to use it. First of all, Matt who came to our house was one of most professional serviceman to ever come to our house. While we did have the fireplace serviced, he gave a very comprehensive inspection analysis and fir a house that was built in 1955 it looks as if we're going to have to have some major retrofit repairs needed. Matt is very knowledgeable and he provided several detailed photos to backup what he saw. He was very respectful of the property and inside leaving now trace the he was even there. Yes it wasn't the best info we were hoping for but I would rather know the bad before we did something that we shouldn't and regret our decision. I recently bought a new wood-burning stove, and my installer asked me to contact Matt at Kleen Sweep to give the stove pipe a very thorough cleaning before the stove was installed. Kleen Sweep--isn't that a great name for a chimney sweep business? My husband has been using this company for years, first a guy named Dale, then Dale and his apprentice, Matt, and now Dale has retired and Matt is "the Man". Every 2 or 3 years he comes out and inspects our chimney. If it doesn't need cleaning he tells us. If it does, he gets the job done. He looks like a ninja when he works, with his black hoodie pulled up. He brings in two huge vacuums, one to reach all the way up to the top of the chimney without having to go on the roof. It has several 4' extensions that he assembles to reach that high and scrubs the sides of the walls as it sucks the soot in. The second is for cleanup around the area after he's done with that. He recommends if you burn one to two cords of wood per year that it should be inspected yearly. The total was $135. That covers his time, gas, vehicle, equipment, insurance and bonding, whatever it costs him to be in business. He is a pleasant young man that we are comfortable having in our house. After speaking on the phone about the fireplace issues I had concerns about, he asked many questions and was able to give me a price range as to what his inspection charge would be. Today, all work performed for a level 2 inspection was completed after he gave detailed information as to what he will do and how he would do it. He left the work area clean. I first called him to clean our fireplace and get more information on a remodel. We wanted to move from the gas logs and have fire rocks put in instead. He had bad news for me because the way we remodeled with the drywall and then he also climbed to the roof and found damage in the pipes of the fireplace and that means our fireplace needs to be completely replaced. It is never good to get bad news, but somehow I left our appointment happy learning about how our chimney and fireplace work and everything that would be needed to get us up and burning again. My mother-in-law happened to be at our house for the appointment and Matt went out of his way to answer questions about her fireplace too! I would not hesitate to hire Matt to do work on our fireplace.
