I went in to the Miramar store to look at linear electric fireplaces to replace our existing gas fireplace. Leonard showed us a variety of options, including new style gas (much more efficient than old type) models. We settled on a 60" wide linear, electric model. Leonard and John worked with us to get all of the modifications in our home designed and planned with our contractor teams. It was a big modification (see before and after pics) but Farrell's got it done for us. We loved the quality and value we got from John and his team. My gas fireplace has been in need of service for a few months now...The firm I've used in the past no longer works in the Mission Valley area and the person they referred me to doesn't work on B-Vent appliances...Ugh! A friend (who manages a large HOA community) recommended Farrell's. Called and got an appointment within two weeks (I'm always willing to wait for the best!). Tom came out and cleaned every piece and part...Including the clogged pilot. He put it all back together so you couldn't even tell the firebox had been serviced. No upselling...No new parts...Just needed a thorough cleaning! When I had a minor issue a couple days later...Tom was right back out to tighten the ground wire and all is good (well...great!). Well, I can't tell you much about their installations, but I can tell you my experience so far. Maybe this will get edited if there's a follow-up. In 2019, some inspector said my condo's fireplace had essentially rotted out and needed replacement. (There's obvious rust so it makes some sense.) I went and got a quote from Farrell's on Miramar for replacing the existing fireplace. I made it clear that the old fireplace needed removal, then the new fireplace installed. They quoted some parts and labor costs. It didn't get done for two years. I don't care that much if it doesn't get done for a few more. So far, that's the way it's going. Here's why... I found that Farrell's has a store in El Cajon! I brought my quote from 2019 in there and asked if they'd honor it, expecting a small rise in price because construction is hot these days. I got promised a phone call that day (which didn't happen until late the next day, but things happen. Everyone was friendly enough and that makes up for the delay. After two years, another day didn't kill me.) At first, they said they'd honor the 2019 quote! I was super-impressed! But that quote did not explicitly say in writing that the old fireplace needed to be removed. Fortunately, it came up in conversation, and that's when John Farrell himself said they'd need to add some labor. I get it; this was not an intentional bait-and-switch. I realize this is a lack of communication from the original quote so I'm not grumpy about it, but given that the re-quote is a ****53% increase**** over the original quote, I'm getting some competing quotes first and we'll see what happens. Let me just tell you, I searched high and low for a reputable company to assist us with our two 2-sided fireplaces and after nearly 8 phone calls to various companies, Farrell's had the best customer service and knowledge over the phone. I was blown away how poor the customer service was on several other businesses in the area. How do you expect to get any business if you can't be kind and helpful over the phone during 1st contact? They answered many of my questions over the phone prior to visiting their shop. I went into the shop and received wonderful service and assistance with picking out the fire beads for our two fireplace sets. One of the highlights of this business is they offer COMPLIMENTARY INSTALL. It was about a 2 week turn time for our install appt. Dewey did our install and he was fantastic.... super helpful, knowledgeable, punctual, and overall a very nice down to earth guy. He has great work ethic and accommodated all of my requests. I'd highly recommend this shop for any of your fireplace needs. Customer service has long been lost in today's society and it's nice to know it still exists out there. John Farrell. The Man. The Myth. He himself came out to my residence to check out what kind of fireplace project I had. We initially had an old rusted out insert in a bonus room with an outdated flag stone fascia. Originally, I wanted a traditional masonry fireplace so I can have big, manly fires. Just because. But John convinced me to consider a high efficiency fireplace insert instead and boy am I glad. The insert was ordered, and in about a month or so, I was scheduled for the install. Dewey was the lead installer who was an ace. They demo'd the old fascia in no time and had the insert in place by the end of the day. They returned another day to button up the stack. Now that the winter season is here, we've been enjoying warm evenings and over nights with our house in the mid to upper 70's with less than half the wood we'd of had to use to keep it going all night with a tradition fireplace. And it was substantially less expensive than one as well. We have never had to use our HVAC for warmth yet this season! Thanks John and the whole Farrell's team! read more

I have lived in my house for years, and it has a gas hookup for a fireplace, but I always used real wood and convinced myself I preferred the crackling sounds of real logs and the ambiance and heat that a wood fire provided. What I did not love, however, was buying expensive bundles of wood every week at the grocery store, lugging them in the house, and cleaning out dirty soot and ashes every time I had a fire. I finally decided last winter that I would just bite the bullet and get a gas log set. I had actually been to Farrell's once before, to pick up some high heat black paint that I used to touch up grates on my cooktop, and was impressed with their store and their employees, and made a mental note to myself if I ever was in the market for a fireplace insert, I should start here. My boyfriend said he was also thinking about replacing his existing gas log setup, so one afternoon in early Fall we decided to check out Farrell's showroom before the winter rush. When we first walked in, we were greeted by Lizette. I was a little disappointed because Lizette looks to be about my daughters age, and I figured she would not be too knowledgable, and I had a lot of questions. I could not have been more wrong! Lizette answered all of our questions, and knew their products very well. They have a lot of different gas log models on display, some of which are able to be turned on so you can see the flames, and have a huge variety of the more modern fire glass type as well. I can not stand feeling pressured or rushed by sales people, when I am undecided about a purchase, and will actually walk out of stores if I feel like I am being stalked by high pressure, commissioned sales people. Thankfully this is not the case at Farrells. My boyfriend and I took a long time looking at different units, I think we turned on every single operable fireplace in the store, and debated the pros and cons of each model until we narrowed our selections down. Lizette let us know she was there if we had any more questions, but left us alone to discuss options. When we first walked in, I think I actually said that we just wanted to see what options there were, and were not necessarily going to buy anything that day, but both my BF and I saw units we loved, so we both decided to buy right then. My BF, living near the beach, chose an awesome Driftwood log insert. Instead of embers we asked Lizette if we could just use sand and beachy looking river rocks, and she said she had never seen just the sand used but there was no reason we could not. The fireplace log set was installed in only about a weeks time, and my BF could not be more happy. *Note to Farrells- The driftwood log set with just sand and river rocks honestly looks just like a beach bonfire! Everyone that sees it loves it, and it really does look like real driftwood. This is the perfect set up for anyone that lives in a SD beach community! I will upload some pictures so people can see for themself! I decided on the fire glass. It was certainly not something I ever would have thought of getting until I saw the set up in Farrells showroom. I fell in love with the clean, modern look. My unit also arrived and was installed in about a week. Both units were installed flawlessly, and at no charge. (pictures of mine also attached). We are both completely happy with the products, the prices, the installation, and most of all the great customer service we received. Farrell's is OK. I bought a $5000 gas insert and the experience was tough. They do not have a design eye so the best customer here is an interior designer who can push them with questions. You must go in with complete measurements or sales people are non responsive. Installation was great, very easy with clear instructions. Now my remote is not working. read more

We shopped around with every fireplace company within 50 miles and I can tell you hands down bar none we had the best experience with Farrell's. First off they know their products more than most know their own offspring, and my gosh how patient they were. There was literally no pressure at any point and they answered our bajillion questions with friendly and very knowledgeable responses. Even if we asked about other brands and they knew all sorts of pro's cons we wouldn't have even considered. Our open fireplace was super custom for one thing, and most companies didn't even want to touch it but these guys checked it out and confirmed no problemo for them and they did an amazing job with it. The final product has been burning flawless and we know even after the whole thing is said and done that these guys would be happy to help if anything was wrong or even future maint etc. I would recommend these guys a hundred times over for any fireside needs. read more

We had a great experience with Farrell's. Initially I had stopped in to get a preliminary quote, and of course was wary of being attacked by high pressure salespeople. Much to my relief, the opposite was the case. I got the information that I needed, followed a few weeks later with a visit from my wife and me. Of course, we settled on something way different than the initial quote, but that was no problem at all. Also, a special shout out to Grady, who patiently explained specifications, rough in dimensions, getting the gas line and electricity in the right place, things like that. Farrell's installers were professional and friendly, and the whole job went without any unnecessary delays or problems. I ordered a gas log/heat insert for my fireplace in November and was told it would arrive in 4-6 weeks. It arrived and was installed at the end of March. Right from the beginning I had problems with the unit functioning. It is operated through a remote and sometimes it turned on and other times it didn't. I called the shop for repair and had to wait several days for them to accommodate me. They came out for 2 service calls each time saying that the unit was fine. When it continued to malfunction they said that I was obviously not doing something right. (there is only one power button) I asked them to check the remote and they did not. Andy said if they came out again they would have to charge me. I paid about $5000 for the unit which continued to malfunction. Since the customer service was awful, I called the manufacturer who indeed told that the remote was faulty. He promised to send me a new remote within a week. It has now been about 4 weeks and no remote has arrived. I would never use Farrells again. Even the owner was rude when I continued to ask for assistance. I even reached out to the salesman who promised to follow up but never heard back. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ATTITUDE!!!!! read more

After ordering one of the more expensive fireplaces and opting for their $695 installation service, this is what I received from Farrell's: A *gas leak* leading to the fireplace that required an emergency call to SDGE, a damaged fireplace screen, a fireplace remote that was improperly programmed, and a "fix" to the screen that fell off moments after the installer left. When I called and tried to get Farrell's to fix the gas leak that they caused, I was told that I needed to call a plumber. John, the owner of Farrell's, specially stated that connecting the gas line in the wall to the fireplace was a "favor" -- in other words, I should be grateful that Farrell's did me a "favor" by improperly installing the gas line and causing a nearly-catastrophic incident with natural gas leaking into my house. The person from SDGE who responded to my emergency call over the gas leak put it best -- if a fireplace installer was this careless and sloppy with his work, this is one company that you'll want to completely avoid. I wish I did before spending money on an installation service that I could have done more efficiently and safer than the "professional" installers at Farrell's. Accidents do happen, and mistakes are made, but those accidents and mistakes were compounded by John Farrell's customer service skills, which are better suited for the Flintstones than 2018. I was referred to Farrells Fireside shop by my contractor who had worked with Farrells for years. The experience went well as I selected the insert for my fireplace, but quickly turned sour when the installation started. The hired installers arrived and appeared to know what they were doing, but as they began to unload the insert and various parts that were needed, they dented a part and my son heard them discussing it and one of the installers told the other to not tell me. Not a good start. Once the installation began, it went pretty quick but parts were needed and they had to delay completing the project. They had to go back to the shop to pick them up and return the next day. My contractor also noticed that the panels in the fire box needed caulking and said something. The installers disagreed with him and did not caulk them. Once installation was completed the next day and the installers left, I noticed as, I was attempting to start a fire, that the front glass panels were off track and were not working properly. My contractor ended up fixing this issue, but as I made fires over the next months, there were bangs on and off. It sounded like something in the firebox was expanding and contracting as the fire got warm or cooled down. Each time startling me and my dogs would not stay in the room. I was told that it would settle down once I continued to have fires in the fireplace. Its been over a year and the big booms have gotten worse. It appears to be the panels THAT NEEDED CAULKING after all. I called Farrells and left a message that was not returned. I called again and spoke with Ms Lee who seemed busy and frustrated that I called. I explained my dilemma and she stated that she needed to get my paperwork from someone at Farrells and would call me back. She did not. Now I have been asked to produce the paperwork. The process has taken over a week and is frustrating. I would not do business with Farrells again. And I am not enjoying my fire place as I should!!! It cost quit a bit! read more
