    QED Coffee, West Seattle

This isn't close to where I live but it's. near my doctor's office so I always come by when I'm in the neighborhood. It's a quiet, comfortable space with tall windows and lots of beautifully cared-for plants. Staff is always friendly and welcoming. The coffee is great. Even the customers all seem cool. :-) They are also queer-friendly --it's a rare place in Seattle that's not, but in this day and age it's nice to see it reiterated.

It is a hidden gem in west Seattle. The coffee is always consistent and great. It's a very welcoming and peaceful place with plants around, a puppy cookies jar, and a basket with books. The food is really... very yummy and with good values! A $6 yummy breakfast sandwich?! Their burritos are very flavorful too.

Cute place, love the vibe and plants, bright space. Coffee was good, iced latte had good coffee flavor, other places it's watered down and more milk flavor. Breakfast sandwich was good, loved the fresh greens and tomato. Only thing I'd wish for was cheese on it. Nice slice of cheddar it would be near perfect. Staff was nice. Also the credit card reader worked fine. It's a standard Square terminal and tip amounts were typical. It's silly to leave a one star review for a place where the problem was user error. You can easily leave no tip if you want, they don't even hover over you while finishing the transaction, they're too busy making your order.

Nice to know they have in-house made options for syrups and sugar free ones also. Quick service. Wish there were more food options.

BEAN BOX: WHERE LIMA BEAN DREAMS BECOME REALITY (DESPITE BEING A COFFEE SHOP)…read more Listen, while others might come here expecting just coffee beans, let me tell you about their REVOLUTIONARY approach to lima bean curation. Their selection of these flat, buttery legumes is so extensive it makes other coffee shops look like they're not even trying in the lima bean department (which, to be fair, they're not, because they're coffee shops). Their premium Giant White Lima collection (displayed with the reverence usually reserved for rare coffee beans) is housed in custom-made glass jars that make other beans question their life choices. Each lima bean is positioned to catch the morning light like tiny, kidney-shaped supermodels. You haven't lived until you've seen their Christmas Lima Bean display (completely overshadowing their holiday coffee blends). The variegated patterns on these heirloom limas tell a story that makes their single-origin Ethiopian beans seem downright chatty at parties. The rare Fordhook Lima section (inexplicably placed next to their pour-over station) features beans so perfectly formed that customers often mistake them for small sculptures. I once saw someone try to order a lima bean latte. The barista's confusion was palpable, but their lima bean organization remained impeccable. Their rotating seasonal lima bean exhibit (which takes up prime real estate that could be used for, oh, I don't know, COFFEE) includes varieties like the Baby Lima, Henderson Bush, and the elusive King of the Garden Lima. Each one is labeled with tasting notes, as if someone's going to conduct a lima bean cupping session. Five stars for their commitment to showcasing these underappreciated legumes in a space clearly designed for coffee retail. I've started a weekly lima bean appreciation club where we gather to admire their collection while confused coffee customers try to order lattes around us. P.S. I heard someone suggest they should focus more on coffee beans, and the lima bean display case audibly gasped. P.P.S. Their limited edition Jackson Wonder Lima beans are stored in a climate-controlled case that probably cost more than most cars. The security system seems excessive, but who am I to question lima bean protection protocols? Note: This review was written while contemplating the bold choice of dedicating so much space to lima beans in a coffee shop on 1st Avenue South. The courage. The vision. The complete disregard for traditional coffee shop inventory expectations. Special Addendum: To the customer who asked why there were lima beans in the coffee grinder - you clearly don't understand the ARTISTRY of cross-legume innovation. Final Thought: Sure, they might technically be a "coffee shop," but their lima bean game is stronger than a triple shot espresso. It's like they misread "coffee house" as "legume palace" and just ran with it. Remember: Coffee beans may come and go, but lima beans are forever. Or at least until someone finally explains to them what kind of beans coffee shops typically sell. P.P.P.S. Their new "Lima Bean of the Month" subscription service is revolutionary, even if it's causing significant confusion among their coffee subscribers.

The vibe of this place and the people that make it happen every morning are world class. Life situations kept me from making my way to the shop for a year or so, but when I walked in I was greeted with a smile and a "it's been a while!" The coffee is reasonably priced and imo - best in the area. It's consistent and while I'm a sucker for the 12oz cold brew - I've gone off script a few times and have always been pleased. I've got family that comes into town fairly often, and almost every morning they ask to go because they think about it when they're at home in Chicago. There's plenty of seating, tho it's sometimes so bumping (because it's a great spot!) it can be hit or miss if you can stick around and enjoy the vibe. But generally I've had good luck over the years setting up at a table and chatting with friends & fam before a hike, enjoying the morning with my pup doing some socialization training or throwing a few emails around to my corporate overlords. I've seen ads for their evening events and have been wanting to make it to one, but I always seem to see the poster days or weeks after the event! Poetry nights in a space like boon boona seem like an unbeatable vibe, hope to notice & get to one soon. *Parking is also not hard to find at all. There's a free garage down the street at the transit center that is never full, and tons of street parking*

They had a sign up the first day that advertised a rose honey latte special, and I love all of that, so I ordered it large and iced. It was amazing. I like my lattes with flavor, but I also want to be able to take the coffee and get a balance. If my coffee doesn't taste like coffee, it's too sweet. I could taste all the elements here and it's clear they use good, high-quality ingredients. They even topped it with rose petals! One day I strayed and ordered one of their specialty mochas, which I am generally hesitant to order because they're often way too sweet. I saw they use Holy Kakow syrup and know that's pretty good stuff. The mocha was really good, but also over $9 for a large before tip. That's my main complaint about this is that it's expensive. That being said, it's Vashon Island and most everything is super expensive. My large, iced latte is under $8 before tip and that feels more justifiable. This is overall a really cool place to check out with some cool history. The tea selection is absolutely amazing, though I'm too much of a coffee person to try it.

When you walk in, you're immediately hit with the smell of the roasted coffee beans, and you can see them roasting the beans from inside the shop. So cool! I was feeling a bit worn from my travels so I decided on a Golden Mylk instead of opting for coffee. The Golden Mylk was a perfect blend of spices and creaminess. Very cozy, warm, and the perfect drink for a cloudy day. I also tried the Vashon Fog which was delicious. Not too sweet, and you could taste the tea over the milk, it didn't taste watered down. You have to check them out if you visit Vashon island!

After booking a tea tasting at a local tea shop, I went around looking for coffee tastings and found Victrola. Every Friday at 11AM, they offer a free tasting class, so we, of course, booked the very next Friday! Arriving at the shop a bit before 11AM, it was pretty full, with most tables taken and a short line of 2-3 people in front of me. We checked in with the cashier and he said the barista was getting things ready. Maybe 5 minutes later, we were led to the room in the back, where the barista introduced the tasting experience and handed us two sheets of paper, one with the anatomy of a coffee cherry, and the other with their coffee flavor wheel. For this week, it was only us two for the tasting, so we had a full monopoly of the barista (according to him, the prior week was 8 people!). We were able to try two coffees - both single origin, one from Guatemala and the other from Colombia. We started by sniffing the beans and grounds, with the Guatemalan emanating notes of lightly roasted peanuts (per tasting notes, it's milk chocolate, orange, and "elegant") and the Colombian with dark soy and umami notes (per tasting notes, it's pineapple, melon, and date), at least to my nose. The barista brewed both via pour over (if I remember correctly, it was 203F water with 20g of the Guatemalan, 24g of the Colombian in 360g of water). I forgot the exact grind sizes he used. Interestingly, the flavor profile of the Colombian was completely different to me between the grounds and the final brew. Very fruity throughout - I'm not that adept at description, but it's definitely a fresher, crisp fruit, not dried fruit, and not red fruit or berries, nor citrus. I'll have to file this one away as pineapple and green apple, per the barista. In terms of mouthfeel, it's thick, almost syrupy, coating the mouth with the fruity flavors. The Guatemalan, on the other hand, is completely different, starting with roasted coffee, then still with the peanut notes, but also adding a caramel-like essence. Very 'brown' on the color wheel. Mouthfeel-wise, thinner, watery like tea. I have never had good quality coffee before and this was certainly an experience that opened my eyes to how good coffee can actually be. I still have a ton of tea leaves to go through, but perhaps when I'm nearing the end, I'll have to start drinking more coffee. Tea, then chocolate, and now maybe coffee? My wallet is crying...
