If they had told me they don't give two scoops of your choice, I would not have order two scoops. This is ice cream was just plain drug store quality but we paid a premium price. My wife and I both had the chicken pot pie and the rhubarb pie a la mode. The pot pie was more of a deconstructed pot pie than an actual pie. It was pot pie filling in a cup with a piece of premade crust on the bottom. The creamy filling had big chunks of chicken with carrots, peas, and celery. It was everything you expect in a pot pie filling. The rhubarb pie was very sweet, and the filling had almost a cobble texture to it. It was good, but I was hoping for more tartness, which is why I didn't get the strawberry rhubarb pie. It is worth stopping at if you are in Custer over the lunch hour. read more

I would give zero stars if it was an option. We ordered two pies to go so we could enjoy after dinner. They were over $35 each, but we were told by others that they were well worth it. While there I observed flies landing on the stack of unused ice cream cones, including one which was served to another customer as we waited for our pies. The health department in my home state would never allow this, but apparently South Dakota has less enforced rules. After dinner, we cut the pies and discovered that one of the pies was not what we had ordered. I recognize people make mistakes, so I called to ask them how they wanted to handle this. The male employee who answered the telephone did not understand what I was trying to convey. He then handed the telephone to a female. I explained the issue to her. She apologized, and then asked me to come in and she would give me the pie we actually ordered. We then drove to their location. After waiting in line, the female employee stated that we would need to return the original pie before she would give us the new one. This is a reasonable request, and one I should've thought of myself. We then returned to our rental, picked up the pie that we had been originally given and returned to the Purple Pie Place. She then stated the pie had been cut, and two pieces were missing. In appearance, Blackberry and Blueberry look similar, and we did not realize that they had given us the wrong pie until it had been cut, served, and tasted. After some discussion she finally spoke with someone in back who told her that they would replace a portion of the pie. I told her that we paid for a full blackberry pie, and wanted our full blackberry pie She then went into the back room and spoke with someone again. When she returned she said that we could either have a partial pie or a full refund. While I would have preferred the full pie, since that was not an option offer to me, I accepted the full refund. We had to wait for a period of time. While we were waiting, we observed that the young male employee behind the counter was using his gloved hands to accept paper tips from the female behind the counter, placing the cash bills in his pocket, and then handling food for customers, without replacing his gloves. In the state I live in, this is another health code violation. Finally a gentleman came out. He had a very non-empathetic personality. He later identified himself as Bobby, the owner. He initially was unwilling to provide us with the refund that the female employee had said we would receive. At one point, he said he was just going to make us leave, keeping the pie that we had returned, and refusing to give us our money back. When I told him I was writing a yelp review, he did finally provide me with the refund for the one pie. Based on the number of health code violations I witnessed in the limited time I was there and the conduct I witnessed, I am not certain any other food would be something that I would be comfortable consuming. This entire situation was an unfortunate situation that would have simply been resolved if they had replaced the pie, or filled the order correctly when we made the initial purchase. Given the health code violations, I am glad I received my money instead of a pie. It should not have taken this level of time and energy to resolve such a simple mistake. read more

The "Rhubarb-Raspberry-Jalapeño Pie" alone could earn this restaurant 7 stars if they served that and nothing else. I was really impressed with most of their pies. I found that they weren't loaded with extra sugar, letting the sweetness of the fruits do the talking. The crusts on all the fruit pies were served warm, were flaky and rich. Pie Ranking: 1. The "Grilled Cheese" has some good Texas toast, but the cheese was krafts singles. The "Caesar Salad" was so basic I could've made it at home; it was just lettuce, cheese and croutons. The "Mac n Cheese" similarly had no pizzazz. I was disappointed they took their vegetarian options off the menu. What's more, they couldn't even make us the "Chicken Caesar Panini" without the chicken because it was all mixed before hand and pre-made? That didn't seem right to me. One of our friends told us to be sure and stop by the Purple Pie Palace since we were going to Custer State Park. We are so glad we did. My husband had the pictures peanut butter pie and I had the bumbleberry and we shared a chocolate shake. (Go big or go home.). Everything was delicious. The staff, which may have been the owners, were very friendly and engaging. Our only disappointment is that we had already eaten lunch because we didn't know that they served it here. Woooow. My wife and I shared the Blackberry pie and it was amazing. Just the right amount of delicious icecream to go with it. It was closing time so we were glad we snuck in right before the "open" sign got turned off. Because of that... Pie slices come out in pieces parts, which we have never seen anyplace else. Not sure how they fail to cut and deliver a full slice. Pay at counter and get pie/ice cream at counter. Cashier was ready to check me out at the counter, then took a Lonnggggggg phone call instead as I stood there with melting ice cream over the pie. So I am left standing there insetad of being served and cashed out. Horrible decision. Ask the person on the phone to wait and take care of customer at the counter. So the strawberry rhubarb pie was good - not great but passable. Went in for the raspberry rhubarb jalapeño pie. Entire experience ... walked into line at the counter. Two people ahead of me and the clerk (maybe owner?) was arguing with the first person in line about something. Then he waited on the person in front of us very curtly. When I got to the counter I said "Are you always so grumpy?" and he said no and continued to be grumpy. When I ordered the pie of choice he said "we're out".
