It's a very popular place with long lines and friendly people. Also they serve food and a large dining area inside, and plenty of outdoor seating. The strawberry fields salad was good but my husband said though they had a lot of meat in the pulled pork sandwich the pork was dry. The peach pie was packed with fruit and the top and bottom crust were very thin but the edge crust was probably 3 times thicker than it is on a regular pie. read more

Wow what a cute place! My husband liked his peach pie and my son liked his cotton candy ice cream. I tried the huckleberry flavor and it tasted not very authentic. On our way to Mount Rushmore we stopped in here for ice-cream, from the outside it looks cute and it certainly is from the inside as well. We were 3 adults and 2 kids, everyone had ice-cream only, here is the takeaway: The ice-cream is ok, not special really but really overpriced, served in flimsy plastic water cups with super flimsy plastic spoons that barely was able to be used for for eating. Loved their chicken pot pie so much, I came back again before I flew back to L.A. pie is very rich, well seasoned, hearty and it's the perfect size for you NOT to share with anyone else. Purple Pie Place.. A most peculiar and unique name for a most peculiar and unique place! My parents just raved about Triple P, saying how when we lived in the area they came here a lot, and it's a perfect refreshment/ dessert stop while wandering through the black hills and visiting some of the other attractions very close by. As the name may suggest, the main product sold here is PIE, how about that! They had a lot of flavors available, as well as ice cream, which they always ask if you want with your pie when you order. I tried the Bumbleberry pie, which had a mix of a few different berries, and it was most delightful. Definitely worthy of a place known for pie. Not the best I've ever had but it qualifies for the respect list. We also ordered the chicken pot pies that they were selling that day and those were pretty fantastic. Hot enough to burn your tongue to a crisp (they were seriously so hot it was dangerous) but super good nonetheless. Purple Pie Place is located in Custer, which is a very small town but has a few cute touristy shops just down the street to walk around and see, and it's a fun, short stop that you should for sure take! Just ordered a double scoop and went back to our hotel room. Once I finished the top scoop of Moose Tracks, I discovered they had put vanilla ice cream in the bottom, not two scoops of Moose Tracks that I ordered and paid a lot for! If they had told me they don't give two scoops of your choice, I would not have order two scoops. This is ice cream was just plain drug store quality but we paid a premium price. Went in only 15 minutes before closing and they were exceptionally nice and thanked us for coming in. I had the best blueberry pie a la mode I've ever had. Everything everyone had was great! This place was absolutely horrendous. Their pie and caramel milkshake was good, but the food was absolutely gross. I ordered the chili, which I was hoping would be homemade. It definitely wasn't. It tasted like the chili you get straight out of a can that is typically used on hotdogs. I'm convinced they just use the chili from their chili dogs to serve it in a bowl. My friend and I also ordered the chicken pot pie, and that was equally bad. I'm unsure if the high reviews are primarily from locals who don't have many other options, but believe me when I tell you to avoid the food at all cost. I appreciate a nice greeting when I'm about to spend my hard earned money, even if it's on a small treat. There was not any greeting or smile from any staff during our visit, a very grumpy group. We all ordered the chicken pot pie since the reviews stated it was good, and it was, not the absolute best I've had but outside of PA Dutch country, not bad. The pie had carrots, peas, chicken and gravy - snuggled in a bowl of crust. We ordered the peach pie a'la mode and blueberry pie a'la mode. The pie crust was flaky and tasty. The peach pie was sweet, and served warm. Definitely made fresh that day. Our server was awesome. We arrived around 7 pm (they close at 8 pm), and were standing in a line outside. When we entered into the building, we realized everyone was ordering ice cream and they had a dining room. We walked back and a server graciously sat us and took our order and served us. We walked out of there stuffed. I would highly recommend this place, especially for the pie. read more

I would give zero stars if it was an option. We ordered two pies to go so we could enjoy after dinner. They were over $35 each, but we were told by others that they were well worth it. While there I observed flies landing on the stack of unused ice cream cones, including one which was served to another customer as we waited for our pies. The health department in my home state would never allow this, but apparently South Dakota has less enforced rules. After dinner, we cut the pies and discovered that one of the pies was not what we had ordered. I recognize people make mistakes, so I called to ask them how they wanted to handle this. The male employee who answered the telephone did not understand what I was trying to convey. He then handed the telephone to a female. I explained the issue to her. She apologized, and then asked me to come in and she would give me the pie we actually ordered. We then drove to their location. After waiting in line, the female employee stated that we would need to return the original pie before she would give us the new one. This is a reasonable request, and one I should've thought of myself. We then returned to our rental, picked up the pie that we had been originally given and returned to the Purple Pie Place. She then stated the pie had been cut, and two pieces were missing. In appearance, Blackberry and Blueberry look similar, and we did not realize that they had given us the wrong pie until it had been cut, served, and tasted. After some discussion she finally spoke with someone in back who told her that they would replace a portion of the pie. I told her that we paid for a full blackberry pie, and wanted our full blackberry pie She then went into the back room and spoke with someone again. When she returned she said that we could either have a partial pie or a full refund. While I would have preferred the full pie, since that was not an option offer to me, I accepted the full refund. We had to wait for a period of time. While we were waiting, we observed that the young male employee behind the counter was using his gloved hands to accept paper tips from the female behind the counter, placing the cash bills in his pocket, and then handling food for customers, without replacing his gloves. In the state I live in, this is another health code violation. Finally a gentleman came out. He had a very non-empathetic personality. He later identified himself as Bobby, the owner. He initially was unwilling to provide us with the refund that the female employee had said we would receive. At one point, he said he was just going to make us leave, keeping the pie that we had returned, and refusing to give us our money back. When I told him I was writing a yelp review, he did finally provide me with the refund for the one pie. Based on the number of health code violations I witnessed in the limited time I was there and the conduct I witnessed, I am not certain any other food would be something that I would be comfortable consuming. This entire situation was an unfortunate situation that would have simply been resolved if they had replaced the pie, or filled the order correctly when we made the initial purchase. Given the health code violations, I am glad I received my money instead of a pie. It should not have taken this level of time and energy to resolve such a simple mistake. read more

We would pass by downtown Custer on the way to our AirBnB, which we made it a thing to stop here every night before calling it a day to pick up pie and eat at the home. Because the pies are that good. They have a huge variety! We tried to choose a different flavor every time, as long as they didn't sell out. They were good both warm and cold. There really isn't much I have to say other than you need to try their pies. I believe they also have lunch options, but we never tried it because we were usually out and about somewhere else. But still, try the pies. They got ice cream too if you want to grab some to eat a la mode. The staff were very nice whenever we ordered. The shop was a cute little purple house, probably would be a nice little study place when it's not busy. The color of this building draws you in and we finally gave in to the urge. The interior of this building is so cute and the decor is really done well. We went in specifically for lunch. We ordered the turkey bacon ranch panini and the chili and barbecue sandwich. The panini came out on a hoagie roll flipped inside out and pressed on a panini. At first we thought it was a hot dog roll but the server confirmed it was a hoagie roll. The panini itself was just a typical sandwich but when you added the jalapeno ranch dressing it was good. My husband said the chili actually tasted like it was Hormel chili but that doesn't mean it wasn't good. He actually did like it. He loved the barbecue sandwich and since I was underwhelmed with the panini, I tasted his sandwich which was sooooo good. I wished I had ordered that. The service was subpar but I think that was because they had one young lady working all the tables in our area so I think she was a little overwhelmed. I did get some salted carmel ice cream and it was delicious! Not what it once was. Ice cream is scooped in a cylinder scoop, peanut butter pie did not have a homemade crust, tasted like it came out of freezer, and felt very gimmicky. It was pot pie filling in a cup with a piece of premade crust on the bottom. The creamy filling had big chunks of chicken with carrots, peas, and celery. It was everything you expect in a pot pie filling. The rhubarb pie was very sweet, and the filling had almost a cobble texture to it.
